THE PROJECT IS AIMED AT CREATING A SOCIAL HUB,FOSTERING THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND TOGETHERNESS ,WHILE CREATING A SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH AND READING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF NAGURU.

03 THE SITE IS LOCATED ON THE MAIN STREET OPPOSITE THE POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN THE RAPIDLY URBANIZING SUBURBAN TOWN, NAGURU, WHICH IS DEVELOPING AS A SATELLITE CITY IN KAMPALA.

THE CLIMATE IS GENTLE AND RATHER COOL DESPITE BEING ON THE EQUATOR BECAUSE OF THE HIGH ELEVATION OF THE PLATEAU . THE ANNUAL TEMPERATURE RANGE SPANS FROM 17 TO 27°C. THERE ARE TWO RAINY SEASONS IN THE COUNTRY, STARTING IN MARCH AND THE OTHER IN OCTOBER, EACH LASTING AROUND TWO TO THREE MONTHS. IT IS RELATIVELY HUMID WITH WIND DIRECTION FROM THE NORTH WEST.

THE UNEQUAL DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN URBANIZED LIVING HAS CREATED A DICHOTOMY OF URBAN LIFE AND COUNTRY SIDE LIFE. THE SITE STANDS BETWEEN PERIPHERAL, RURAL AND SUBURBAN AREAS WITH THE SLUM DWELLERS LIVING BELLOW THE INTERNATIONAL POVERTY LINE.

THE ARCHITECTURE NEEDS TO BE STRONG AND DURABLE AS WELL AS SUSTAINABLE.

THE DESIGN SHOULD BE CULTURALLY RELEVANT.

FOSTER CIVIC EMPOWERMENT. ELEVATE SOCIETY- IT AS A SOCIAL HUB AND PEOPLE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASSET,CONNECTING THEM TO NATURE AS NATURE IS KNOWN TO REDUCE STRESS, IMPROVE CONCENTRATION AND PRODUCE MORE POSITIVE EMOTIONAL FUNCTIONING. IN ADDITION ,THE PROJECT SEAKS TO; CREATE A WELCOMING A PUBLIC SPACE THAT IS INNOVATIVE AND INSPIRING. ATTEMPTING TO SHOW ARCHITECTURE AT ITS BEST CAN IMPROVE PEOPLE'S QUALITY OF LIFE. CREATING EMPLOYMENT OPPOTUNITY FOR THE LOCALS DURING CONSTRUCTION STAGES.

SITE ANALYSIS OPPOTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS THE MOST COMMON CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL IS HANDMADE FIRED BRICK COVERED WITH MORTAR BECAUSE OF THE ROUGH TEXTURE OF THE BRICKS AND INCONSISTENT SIZE. TIMBER IS ANOTHER OVER FAMILIAR MATERIAL USED FOR ROOF TRUSSES AND OFTEN CONCEALED BY CEILINGS.

POPULATION EXPLOSION IN RECENT YEARS DUE TO RAPID DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT PROPER CITY PLANNING HAS LEFT A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS AROUND THE SITE LIKE UNPAVED NARROW ROADS LEADING TO TRAFFIC JAM ESPECIALLY DURING RUSH HOURS,WHICH IS WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THE SITE TO BE ATLEAST 10 MINTUES WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE TARGET USERS.

DESIGN BRIEF LOCAL REGULATIONS Landscaping shall include indigenous flora and local materials Parking for motor vehicles shall be provided within the boundary of the site All setbacks of atleast 5meters between the main road and buildings

main reception area where one can find help and with clear signage vibrant café community garden/park outdoor reading areas multi functional space bookstore with exhibition space traditional library space for formal reading digital reading and research Area for children room for group discussions parking areas should not dominate the building entrance, should be to the side landscaping; utilize indigenous plants appropriate for the climate The library area should be easily distinguished from attached facilities. toilets ,offices, break room, workroom, stores and server room sustainable development


CONCEPTUAL DESIGN THE CONCEPT HAS A REALLY STRONG CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY.

TRADITIONAL UGANDAN HOMSTEAD;BUGANDA

A HOMESTEAD IN BUGANDA IS USUALLY ORGANIZED IN A CIRCULAR FORM AROUND A COURTYARD WERE THE FAMILY SPENDS MOST OF ITS TIME. THE SETTLEMENT IS SURROUNDED BY A WOODEN FENCE FOR PROTECTION FROM HOSTILE TRIBES AND ANIMALS. THE FATHERS HUT IS USUALLY AT THE HEAD OF THE ORGANISATION AS THE MOST IMPORTANT STRUCTURE.


REIMAGINING STORAGE AND SUSTENANCE INTO FORM, THE GRANARY STORES GUIDE THE BUILDING CONCEPT. AS A LIBRARY CAN BE CONSIDERED A STRUCTURE STORING KNOWLEDGE ,CYLINDRICAL GRANARYSTYLED FORMS ARE MADE CONTEMPORARY THROUGH THE TOPPING OF DOMES WITHIN.

THE CONCEPT IS BROUGHT TO LIFE USING VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE WITH EARTH CONSTRUCTION TO ADDRESS THE SUSTAINABILITY AND CULTURAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROJECT. NATURAL MATERIALS WILL BE ADOPTED AND LEFT EXPOSED FOR THE USERS TO CONNECT MORE TO MATERIALS.


SITE PLAN USING A SPIRAL CONFIGURATION OF PATH CUTTING THROUGH ALL THE SPACES. THE PATH CREATES PATTERNS OF REST AND MOVEMENT WITHIN IT. THE CIRCULATION SPACE IS OPEN ON BOTH SIDES FORMING A COLOMADED PASSAGE WAY THAT BECOMES A PHYSICAL EXTENSION OF THE SPACE IT PASSES THROUGH.

ELEVATIONS

FROM THE CONCEPT OF TRADITIONAL BUGANDA HOMESTEADS THAT ARE OFTEN SURROUNDED BY TREES OR A HEDGE, I USED ROWS OF TIMBER COLUMNS TO CREATE A WALK THROUGH PAVILION. THEY OFFER A DEGREE OF SHELTER FROM THE ENVIRONMENT AND FORM A SEMI-TRANSPARENT SCREEN THAT UNIFIES THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDING FORMS BEHIND IT.

PERSPECTIVES

I USED A CENTRALIZED ORGANISATION AS ALL MY SECONDARY SPACES ARE GROUPED AROUND A LARGE DOMINANT CENTRAL SPACE, THE MULTI FUNCTIONAL AREA,WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO HOST COMMUNITY EVENTS LIKE MEETINGS. BY LOWERING THAT PORTION OF THE GROUND PLANE IT ISOLATES THE SPACE FROM THE LARGER CONTEXT FURTHER SHOWING ITS IMPORTANCE.

THE PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIALS ARE; RAMMED EARTH IN THE FOUNDATIONS AND WALLS. COMPRESSED STABILIZED EARTH BLOCKS IN LANDSCAPING AND WALLS. GLUED LAMINATED TIMBER FOR WALLS, COLUMS AND THE PAGOLAS.

ADVANTAGES OF RAMMED EARTH INCLUDE ;THERMAL MASS. NOISE REDUCTION, STRONG AND DURABLE, FIRE PROOF, LOAD BEARING, VERSATILE IN APPEARANCE, MINIMUM CARBON FOOTPRINT AND LOW EMBODIED ENERGY.

ADVANTAGES OF C.E.B INCLUDE; LOW EMBODIED ENERGY, LOW TO ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS ,A LOT OF THERMAL MASS. FIRE-PROOF, ZERO WASTE.

ADVANTAGES OF GLULAM INCLUDE; LOCALLY AVAILABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL, FLEXIBILITY OF SHAPE AND SIZE, GOOD APPEARANCE, EXCELLENT STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO, DURABILITY

NATURAL VENTILATION

DEVELOPED GREEN WAYS AND BELTS

ZERO WASTE TECHNOLOGY THIS IS A SET OF PRINCIPLES FOCUSED ON WASTE PREVENTION THAT ENCOURAGES THE REDESIGN OF RESOURCE LIFE CYCLES SO THAT ALL PRODUCTS ARE REUSED. THE GOAL IS FOR NO TRASH TO BE SENT TO LANDFILLS, INCINERATORS OR THE OCEAN. IN A ZERO WASTE SYSTEM, MATERIAL WILL BE REUSED UNTIL THE OPTIMUM LEVEL OF CONSUMPTION.

DESIGN PRECEDENT

I USE NATURAL VENTILATION IN MY DESIGN AND THUS NO HVAC SYSTEM, THE RAMMED EARTH HAS GOOD THERMAL MASS COUPPLED WITH THE CROSS VENTILATION IN THE STRUCTURES AND THE ORIENTATION OF THE BUILDINGS FOR WIND CATCHMENT.

THIS PROJECT PUSHED ME TO DO MORE RESEARCH IN REGARD TO USERS AND THERE NEEDS AS WELL AS SUSTAINABLE BUILDING. I ALSO HAVE MORE APPRECIATION FOR GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF RESEARCH ESPECIALLY FOR PRESENTATION TO PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT NECESSARILY PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD. SO MY GOAL NOW IS TO WORK MORE ON MY PRESENTATION SKILLS. THE ABILITY TO SELL MY IDEA.
