GETTING THE SCOOP: Capannari Ice Cream has been open for over ten years and has won various awards for their ice cream flavor since then. Greg Off Staff Writer It isn’t very often you visit a nationally acclaimed ice cream parlor, but fortunately for me I found one minutes away. So I hopped in the Oldsmobile, grabbed junior Luka Pavlakis and sophomore Jose Camacho, and drove to my first food hot spot of the year: Capannari Ice Cream. Located at 10 S. Pine in Mount Prospect, Capannari is only about 10 minutes away, which gives you every reason to go and enjoy some great ice cream. At first glance Capannari seems rather middle of the road. As you venture up the stairs to the refurbished Mount Prospect post office, you realize that this isn’t your average ice cream parlor. The magic begins when you walk in the door. The staff is extremely polite and patient, which is a big deal considering there are fifteen standard flavors and a rotating cast of seasonal flavors. This can be quite overwhelming when you have to make a Lebron-esque decision. Perhaps the best thing about the flavors is the fact that almost all are unique and unlike anything I had ever tasted

before. The best-seller and customer favorite “Black Raspberry Chip” is by and large the best ice cream I have ever eaten. Smooth and rich, the balance of the chocolate sweetness and fruitiness of the berries is almost perfect and is a true work of art. Another customer favorite, “Jamaican Blue Mountain Java Chip,” is a mouthful in every sense of the word. I absolutely despise coffee and yet the lightness of the java and the bite from the dark chocolate had me begging for more. The heavy and delicious “Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch” was mind-blowing. Camacho could not speak for the next three minutes other than to say “peanut butter.” Pavlakis held his composure much better than Camacho. The basic flavors, like banana, coconut and cookie dough were very good, but not as mind blowing as the unique flavors. They did, however, capture the full flavor intended. The black licorice ice was not good to me (I cannot stand the taste) but I could respect the passion they put into what they do.

Capannari also managed to pull off two of the most bizarre yet perfectly crafted frozen delicacies I’ve ever enjoyed. The Limoncello Black Raspberry Sorbet was the perfect blend of sweet raspberries; the tart lemon and the velvety texture of the sorbet was absolutely delightful. The most discussed flavor was the Mango Chili Pepper ice cream. When you take your first bite you taste the smooth and delicate flavor of the mango, and right after you swallow your throat turns into a four-alarm fire, but boy did it taste good. The only downsides were the price and one inexcusable flavor. The price can get a little steep at around $4 a cone, but the quality is worth a little extra. My biggest beef however was the beer inspired “Hoppolicious” which was bitter, bland, and overall a very poor flavor. Pavlakis went as far to say, “It flat out sucked,” while Camacho, who has never said a mean thing in his life, declined to comment. All in all, 15 great ice creams to one not so good is a wonderful, and delicious, ratio.

In 1944, as a WWII war correspondent, Ernest Hemingway led Free French resistance fighters in the defense of the town of Rambouillet, an act for which he was almost tried under the Geneva Conventions.
