‘Possessed’ local woman conned by bogus priest

Ashish is dancing to the top

>> Victim was told her gold jewellery was cursed and she should hand it over MERVYN KRISHNA

A

KWADUKUZA woman claims she has been left broke after being robbed of almost R100 000 in jewellery and cash by a con artist purporting to be a Hindu priest. The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, was told she was “possessed by demons” and needed to have cleansing rituals performed when she contacted the man, whom she knew only as “Shanker”, to complain about feeling unwell. He also allegedly told her that her family's gold jewellery was cursed and that she should hand it over to him. When she did so, he disappeared. She took out R40 000 in bank loans and handed over R60 000 of family gold. She said she feels “humiliated and hurt” by the experience. “It was stupid to think he was helping me but I was desperate,” she said.

“I am now totally broke and he has my family’s gold.” She said she has a leaflet advertising the services of the “priest” from a local newspaper in June. She said she had been feeling unwell for a few weeks and had been to see her doctor, who was unable to diagnose an illness. Shesaiddespitebeinghesitantshe called the number on the advert in search of advice. “A man calling himself Shanker said I should come and meet him at an outbuilding in Stanger Manor and he would try to find out what was wrong,” she said. “He said I had demons inside me and asked for R3 000 to perform a ritual with fire. “It was very strange, I felt like I was almost under a spell. “He said for R10 000 he would be able to remove the bad energy, so I took out a loan. But I started to feel worse. “He said to wait nine days and come back and when I did he said he needed R25 000 so someone in

India could also perform a ritual. “I just wanted the problem solved and to feel better again, so I took out another loan. “Again he said to wait nine days and on the ninth day I started to feel like myself again.” The priest then told her the gold jewellery she was wearing had been cursed with black magic. Last month, he asked her to collect all the gold in her house and take it to him, so he could “cleanse” it. She said: “I took it to him and he said to wait outside for an hour while he performed another ritual. “I had been outside for more than an hour so I went into the house and he was gone. I felt so stupid and realised what he had done." Another victim, from Stanger Manor, said she believed someone had bewitched her because of marks that appeared on her body. The woman saw the same advert and contacted a man, again named Shanker.

KWADUKUZA man has been charged with the murder of Peter Luke. Darryl Govender briefly appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was not asked to plead. Luke was found tortured to death in Hill Crescent near Sunny Park on Saturday 7 June. He died due to the extent of his injuries. Luke was allegedly handcuffed to a tree and tortured with a hammer, sticks and a pipe by a group of men who accused him of stealing power tools. After Luke was untied, he managed to run

towards Sunny Park, but collapsed in a driveway and died. Govender was released on R3 000 bail. The KwaDukuza SAPS Cluster Unit is investigating the case. According to Govender’s father, Dennis, he believes his son is innocent and had no motive to kill Luke. “He did not harm us or steal anything from our house. However, the real killers, who are on the loose, must be arrested and brought to book. The good thing is that the community of KwaDukuza is aware who the killers are. I have faith in the detective who is investigating the case.”

AS part of their KwaZulu-Natal breakfast show tour, East Coast Radio’s Darren Maule and Natahra Nadesan hit SMD Ballito with a bang on Friday. They broadcast live from the showroom floor, accompanied by some of the Miss Ballito girls. The team also received seven branded vehicles from SMD to drive for six months.

Community warned not to fall for con “The first day I went to him, he told me that I had bad luck and needed R1 500 to cure the problem. I gave the man the cash. After a few days, I went back to him and told him there was no difference. He then told me he has to come and conduct a prayer at my house which cost another R1 500. “After several days, the man told me he needed R15 000 to get someone from India to perform the rituals because my situation was too big,” said the woman. It was then that the woman became suspicious and approached the Weekly for assistance. When the Weekly journalist asked the priest to return the money, he told the journal-

ist not to come to the house that day, but to come the following day and that he would return the cash. However, when the journalist went to the house in Stanger Manor, the “priest” was gone with his belongings. When the journalist spoke to the landlord, he was told the priest had left the previous night. Chairman of the Stanger Siva Temple Harry Naidoo urged people not to fall for similar scams. “We are against people like this who come here and place adverts in the paper or wherever saying they can cure this and that. It's not correct, it's all humbug. We believe strongly in faith, but this is not faith.”

CTING MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo condemned the disruptions of taxi operations at the KwaDukuza taxi rank by illegal taxi operators, saying lawlessness will not be tolerated. Dhlomo’s comment comes in the wake of disruption allegedly by a group of illegal operators affiliated to the Maphumulo Taxi Association, who invaded the taxi rank and threatened to take over operations. The incident took place last Monday at the KwaDukuza taxi rank, where the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo taxi associations operate. After receiving disturbance reports, Dhlomo called an urgent meeting with the leadership of

Maphumulo association. Inthemeeting, theMaphumuloassociation’s leaders distanced themselves from the disruptions and condemned the incident. It emerged that disgruntled operators are mobilising illegal operators to forcefully operate and invade taxi ranks to cause instability. Dhlomo expressed concerns that commuters were affected and could not access the long-distance taxi rank in KwaDukuza as a result of these acts. “We oppose any form of disruptions in the taxi industry, mainly because commuters then become the victims. We convened this meeting withtheassociationtoensurethatoperations return to normal and to avoid escalation into violence.” He said the Department of Trans-

port is also opposed to illegal operators invading the industry because this results in conflict and violence. The meeting resolved that law enforcement agencies will be deployed to monitor the situation and that South African National Taxi Council should facilitate the process of engaging legal operators under Maphumulo who are working with illegal operators in a bid to achieve unity and stability. Dhlomo condemned the violent behaviour by members of KwaDukuza. “This will not be accepted. We cannot succeed in stabilising the situation if people think it works as an ‘eye for an eye’. We call on both associations to remain calm and follow the proper channels to achieve a balance in the local industry.”

A DARNALL woman who allegedly offered a down payment of R1 500 to get rid of her boyfriend has had the tables turned on her. The would-be hitman, who will now be the prosecution’s star witness in the September trial, said he was so “freaked out” he went to police and “tattled” on the woman,

tectives and the hitman set up a trap, and the man proceeded to have a meeting with the woman to collect a down-payment of R1 500 for the hit two weeks ago. Once the transaction took place, police pounced on the suspect and arrested her. At this stage it is unclear as to why the suspect wanted her boyfriend killed. Investigations are continuing.

Taxi antics raise tempers >> Accusations of double standards favouring taxis SHANNON HOPKINS

R

ESIDENTS say taxis are a “law unto themselves” and “authorities turn a blind eye”. Ballito resident Karen Lategan said the temporary taxi rank next to the Sangweni tourism centre is a poor advert for the town. She said she has noticed people setting up make-shift food stalls and hair salons, lighting fires and carrying automatic weapons at the taxi rank, which is “illegal and unacceptable”. “The rank is a disgrace. It is at theentrancetoBallito, andrightnext to the tourism centre, which is terrible for Ballito as a tourism-driven town,” said Lategan. She said the taxi security guards carrying weapons are also disconcerting, and an “accident waiting to happen”. “I’ve been told they are affiliated to the police, but it sets the wrong tone in any case. A man was killed in a shoot out last year. Who is to say it will not happen again?” said Lategan. She added whenever other people attempt similar activities, they are immediately shut down. “My son had a fire on the beach, which was safely enclosed, and they were shut down within a few minutes. But no one does anything when there are fires at the taxi rank.” Lategan said when she approached authorities on the matter,

she was told taxi operators and those frequenting the rank were “authorised”. Ward 6 councillor Colin Marsh agreed the rank was “out of hand”. “The taxi problem has plagued Ballito for much too long and it is discouraging to business investment. Something needs to be done. “There can’t be one set of rules for some, and different ones for others,” said Marsh. “The mayor also promisedtoiletsattherank. This has not been fulfilled. A permanent rank also needs to be built,” he added. Dolphin Coast Taxi Association’s Dan Maharaj said the food and other stalls had nothing to do with the taxi operators. “We are running a transport service. The vendors have comeinoftheirownaccord,”hesaid. Another member said the association had met with the municipality about the issues three weeks ago, butnothinghadbeendone.“Themunicipality must remove vendors and provide toilets for us as promised,” he said. KDM bylaws state no person shall carry on the business of a street trader on “a verge, contiguous to a building belonging to, or occupied solely by , the state or the municipality; except to the extent that the carrying on of such business is permitted by a notice or sign erected or displayed by the municipality”. It was announced earlier this

THE auspicious day of the appearance of Lord Krishna is celebrated all over the world as Sri Krishna Janmasthami. It is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Shraavan. Krishna, who is thesSupreme personality of Godhead, appeared in Mathura as son of Vasudeva and Devaki. “As stated in the Bhagavad-Gita, the Lord says that His appearance, birth, and activities, are all transcendental, and one who understands

them factually becomes immediately eligible to be transferred to the spiritual world.” – Chapter 3: Birth of Lord Krishna,Krishna Book by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Lord Krishna himself in Bhagavad-Gita, Chapter 4 text 8 describes the reason of his appearance as follows: “paritranay sadhunamvinsaya ca duskrtamdarma-samsthapanrthayasambhavami yuge yuge,” meaning, “To deliver the pious and

annihilate the miscreants, as well also re-establish the principles of religion, I Myself appear millennium after millennium.” The Krishna Janmasthami festival will be held ISKON on 16 August at 5:30pm at the Shri Sanathan Mundal Hall, 21 Greyridge Drive, Stanger Heights with special guest His Holiness Bhakti Caitanya Swami. HE Women in Business Forum selected its steering committee last Wednesday. Executive committee representative Jane Wiltshire took the floor first, addressing the audience on the role of the forum for modern women. Wiltshire is a role model for women in business, having been a teacher, clerk, metallurgical chemist, corporate executive for a large company, and an entrepreneur who started and successfully runs several companies. She has also been a corporate financier. She is currently adding to the list and launched into the market of assessing the valuations of unlisted companies. She has a BSc, teaching diploma, MBA and is completing her doctorate in corporate finance on the topic of “valuation of unlisted companies”. Wiltshire is passionate about saving rhinos from extinction, saving the top soil of South Africa, and developing entrepreneurs. She has served as the chief judge in the Entrepreneurs competition for the past three years and is a member of the executive committee of the iLembe Chamber. She explains that while lots has changed for women in business over the years, the forum was still a necessary means of support. “As a married female teacher, I was paid 25% less than the men. I was not allowed on the medical aid, I was not allowed on the pension fund and I was not allowed to get a housing loan. “I was also on 24 hours’ notice. I was required to do the

not purely a woman’s issue, men too are scared. “However, many of them push themselves upwards anyway. We need to ask ourselves how much of the ‘glass ceiling’ is constructed by us as women,” said Wiltshire. “I would like to challenge the iLembe Chamber Women in Business Forum to make a difference to the economy and the lives of women in this area, and choose a big, hairy, audacious goal (Bhag) in trying to change some of these issues,” she said.

Mike Mabuyakhulu had a goal for 50% representation of women on boards in KwaZulu-Natal by 2005. “He pointed out that he was very unhappy that we had fallen so badly short of this. Partly, it is our own fault as women. “It is easier to retreat into our ‘cocoon of comfort’ rather than push ourselves out there and take on the challenges which that means. “It’s a scary place for us competing with all comers. “But we should know that it is

LOCAL celeb Ashish Gangapersad has strictly danced his way into week four of the seventh season of popular SABC 2 dance show Strictly Come Dancing, amid tough contenders. Gangapersad, who acted as Prada in “Isidingo” and was born and raised in KwaDukuza, won the hearts of fans and supporters whose votes have kept him in the competition thus far. Ashish spends gruelling hours rehearsing trying to get his “two left feet to work in sync” which is no easy feat. For someone who has never danced before, he has made significant strides in burning up the dance floor. Ashish expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his fans, family and friends who continue to vote for him. “I will endeavour to leave my heart on the dance-floor each week just for you.” To keep Ashish in the running and put KwaDukuza on the map, voting is critical. Voting lines open every Friday during the live show between 8pm and 9.45p. Show your support to Ashish and his dance partner Lindsey Muckle by texting SCD 10 to 33123. Going postal on perceived nepotism STEPH MCLENNAN steph@expressmedia.co.za DEAR Thuthukile Zuma, I hope this letter finds you well, and that you are settling comfortably into your position of chief-of-staff in the Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services. I must say, by way of introduction, that both your story and your photograph remind me of an old adage. The apple, they say, doesn’t fall far from the tree, and you have both your dad’s dashing good looks and what increasingly seems like his savvy ability to use any given situation to his advantage. Being a member of the Zuma family must be tough at times.

You hardly ever get to see your beloved dad, and when you find a sweet new job, the first thing people do is question your ability because of your surname. It surprises me that your degree in anthropology convinced Siyabonga Cele that you were a suitable incumbent for the position with which you have been blessed. Also, I notice that the five to ten years of experience that applicants for such positions are generally expected to have did not apply to you. However, with that said, Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane has assured us that your appointment has everything to do with your abilities, and nothing to do with your lineage. Given the calibre of public service administered to the average South African, nobody should feel inclined to doubt what Chabane has to say – no, not at all. A position like yours did not need

to be advertised, no matter what thoseguysoverattheMailandGuardian say. Why waste good money advertising a position, when Our Esteemed President was perhaps able to point Chabane in the direction of the perfect candidate? Who needs an understanding of technology, a grasp of human resources issues or an understanding of the technologies which allow communication, when you have anthropology? Remember, Thuthukile, new jobs can be overwhelming, and you may have some days when you feel that you’re just not coping.

When that happens, just remember that no South African really expects the post office to be competent. Ever. They have insurance on any and every item which they place in your care, so don’t you worry about a thing, pretty lady. While I’m writing to you, I’d love to ask you a couple of questions about your dad’s house, as I presume that taxpayers such as myself (and yourself of course) must be paying for you to travel there for a weekend every so often. Your dad would never allow you to work very hard without having a break – he’d be worried about you

JUST REMEMBER THAT NO SOUTH AFRICAN REALLY EXPECTS THE POST OFFICE TO BE COMPETENT. EVER.

going…postal. As was well documented in the media over the past year or so, the new and improved Nkandla offers you, your sisters, your mother and your step-mothers protection from rapists, robbers and the dregs of South African society. What is it like to feel safe? Is the firepool really worth the millions that it supposedly cost? Finally, I wish to congratulate you on jumping so early and so successfully into the role of a high-powered civil servant. As your dad will tell you, an Honours degree is infinitely more than you will ever need to succeed, even in the highest office of our land. Where to from tele-communications, Thuts? I’d love to hear back from you. I’d ask you to email me, but given your position, I’d say let’s stick to snail mail.

Letter

AFTER reading Ms Naidoo’s letter in last week’s paper, I suspect there are gaps in her education regarding science, history and Theology. Catholic priest Georges LeMaitre was the first to propose the Big Bang in 1927. Since then the Vatican and most European mainstream Christian churches seem to have accepted this as the Beginning. Alfred Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist – a contemporary of Charles Darwin who came to similar conclusions at the same time. Darwin got all of the glory for his “Theory of Evolution”, however. Neither of these scientists seemed to have a racist agenda and since their discovery evolution is accepted as a fact (just as the earth is round and orbits the sun) again by the Vatican and mainstream churches. History shows that Darwin was distressed by the fact that evolution conflicted with some of his beliefs; he was after all a Church of England curate and I suspect there was much friction with his devout wife over the subject. On the subject of all religions believing in an almighty God, I recommend Ms Naidoo study some Eastern belief systems like Buddhism and Taoism which do not have the Abrahamic concept of a supreme being. Further reading will reveal that Greek philosophers mention the idea of evolution around 2500 years ago. Although slavery was established in Greece and most other states at the time there seems to be no racial agenda behind these discussions. If Ms Naidoo wants evidence of racism and slavery she will find plenty of examples in the Bible and the Koran. Many slavers justified their way of life by quoting scriptures. Secular thinkers like Thomas Paine opened the eyes of Western society to the cruelties of this culture. Unfortunately this has yet to happen in Islamic states.

Getting teachers PC savvy >> Donation of 12 computers to crèches aims to improve teachers’ abilities in the classroom SHANNON HOPKINS

A

DONATION of 12 computers – three desktops and nine laptops - were sponsored by African Bank to the Women in Business Forum early childhood development (ECD) sites recently, and training has started. Guiding light behind the project, Renalda Hoffmann, said they monitor the sites closely. “We visited the crèches and inspected the sites to ensure that the infrastructure and the facilitator is

adequately equipped with a computer to benefit their crèches,” she said. KwaPhenduka Projects, a registered non-profit organisation, have been controlling the handover and Nathan Wit has been providing the facilitators with training. “Training with the 12 ECD centres has started and has been an awesome learning opportunity for the facilitators. “Training this past term has been focused on basic computer skills. Many of the teachers had never worked on a computer before so it has

been intense concentration and laughter as we have gone through the training. In this next term we will focus on Microsoft Word with specific focus on writing proposals for their centres,” he said. Kwaphenduka Projects are looking to collect 50 good quality secondhandcomputerstoexpandonthecurrent Internet connectivity project, where they are currently involved with 30 schools. Boston Campus clinic day LAST Wednesday Boston City Campus and Business College-Stanger promoted healthy living by hosting a clinic day for their students at the campus. Staff from the Department of Health and local Groutville Clinic rendered a number of free services to the pupils. Campus principal Annie Wilson introduced the team of nurses and counsellors and encouraged all students to make use of the services on offer. A brief talk was conducted by sister Pam Naidoo, where she explained the different tests that would be offered and the importance of

each one in daily live. She also explained the confidentiality of the testing and how important it was to get the results as they could affect those around the students. Thereafter, students voluntarily took advantage of the diabetes, blood pressure, TB and HIV/AIDS testing. During each test students asked the nurses and counsellors questions about the relevant testing, thus ensuring they will promote a healthy lifestyle among their friends and family. After the clinic day Wilson thanked sisters Naidoo, N Xulu, S Ngobese, S Linda and Mpume Nzuza.

INVITATION TO THE RESIDENTS OF KWADUKUZA TO THE PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY MARCH Fellow residents of KwaDukuza We greet you in the name of KwaDukuza Municipal Council, the Stanger Muslim Association and the progressive forces who are struggling for the creation of a better world. The situation in the Gaza Strip is such that none of us can ignore it. Since the outbreak of that crisis our government has expressed serious concern at the escalating number of casualties many of whom are women, children and the infirm. To this end the South African government has appealed for calm and a speedy ceasefire as well as the opening of a humanitarian corridor to enable aid to get through to the needy. Since the advent of our democracy, which we attained with the support of the international solidarity campaign against apartheid, among others, our government has been engaged in the call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestine question. In engaging in this call government has maintained the principled position of a twostate solution with an economically viable Palestinian State existing side by side and in peace with Israel, within mutually agreed and internationally recognised borders based on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The reason for my correspondence is to appeal to you to join millions across the globe who are raising their voices against the atrocities that are perpetrated against the vulnerable people in both territories resulting from continued rocket attacks. As South African citizens we know too well how international solidarity helped us achieve our hard won freedom. It is against this background that we invite you to join the Palestinian Solidarity March which will be organized as follows: DATE TIME VENUE

: FRIDAY, 8TH AUGUST 2014 : 13H00 : RECREATION GROUNDS

Marchers will march through the streets of the town and proceed to the Municipal gardens where a memorandum will be handed for onward transmission to the provincial and national spheres of government. As Tata Madiba once said, “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians” Your participation in this solidarity campaign, in the quest for an equitable, just and humane world order will be appreciated. Yours in human solidarity COUNCILLOR RICARDO MTHEMBU MAYOR: KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S DAY

A message from Herashni Singh >> Hard work and dedication pays off

E

August 8, 2014

DUCATION is one of the most important means of empowering women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to excel in our South African male dominated economy. Therefore, in my home, my parents, both professionals, ensured that education was a priority. After completing my tertiary education, my professional career began in 1999 at the age of 22 at KwaDukuza Municipality’s civil engineering department. It was through my hard work, dedication and the guidance of director Jogie Naidoo and my best friend admin officer Logie Govender that I managed to complete an illustrious decade of success in my personal and professional life. This experience equipped me with the confidence to take on the position of MANAGING DIREC-

TOR of SHRAR’S ENGINEERING owned by my husband Navin Singh. Working with my meticulous, industrious and supportive husband over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for my personal and intellectual growth as a woman in a “man’s world”. Through his perseverance and teachings I am able to cope with my amazingly co-operate staff, even in his absence. At Shrar’s Engineering, I am the only female and the teamwork derived with

my husband and our wonderful staff is absolutely crucial for the success of any business. My hectic day, from 4am until late, is based on simple philosophies that have brought me great success. Humility, devotion and rules are simple qualities that I practice in everything that I do, and it yields resounding results. I am truly grateful to my parents, my brother and his wife and my sister and her husband for they have assisted in raising my sons whilst I worked tirelessly throughout the years. My darling sons, Shravan and Sheehan, from whose names SHRARS ENGINEERING was created, are my source of inspiration to persevere and excel in our business of truck body building, trailer manufacturing and general engineering. My belief is that a woman is a full circle, within her lies the power to create, nurture and transform.

HUMILITY, DEVOTION AND RULES ARE SIMPLE QUALITIES THAT I PRACTICE IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO, AND IT YIELDS RESOUNDING RESULTS

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S DAY

WEEKLY

Silent protest is heard

13

>> Hundreds gather in support of rape victims WEEKLY REPORTER

W

OMEN and men of all ages and races gathered at St Michael Lutheran Church on Friday for the eighth annual SilentProtest. The protest, organised for the first time in Durban by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), in association with St Michael’s Lutheran Church, highlighted rape survivors’ right to Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in order to prevent HIV sero-conversion. Central to the protest is the public act of showing solidarity with rape survivors who are often silenced by sexual violence.

WritingforWomen24,MichelleSolomon describes the events – held nationally - as protesters standing in solidarity with rape survivors “ [seeking] to understand the toxicity of society’s silencing of rape survivors by being themselves silenced with black gaffer tape for as long as 12 hours - without drinking, eating, smoking or speaking during that time. “Rape survivors, on the other hand, wear t-shirts declaring themselves to be just that, are free to speak and are taskedwithsilencingthesilentprotesters by covering their mouths with the black tape. “Once the protesters have gathered, they are led by the rape survivors

in a march, with the rape survivors linking their arms together to make a human daisy chain.” Government crime statistics reveal that 66 000 sexual assaults were reported in SA last year. Of these, only 6.5% are successfully prosecuted and less than half of 1% of perpetrators will serve any jail-time.

HEN Kerry Ritson became a mother she had no idea what she was letting herself

in for. Doctors told Ritson her daughter Kiera-nowfive-hadsufferedastroke in the womb, and as a result had a porencephalic cyst one her brain, which caused hydrocephalus and resulted in 70% of the right brain not developing. However, after numerous surgeries, the last and biggest of which was in May last year, Kiera is a cheeky, bouncy, beautiful little girl today. “I am so grateful Kiera that has been blessed with a relatively normal lifeafterallshehasbeenthrough. The left side of her body is weaker, although it is not easily noticeable. With lots of therapy, we are hopeful she will get better and better,” said Ritson. Ritson said motherhood has not been easy. At the latter stage of her pregnancy, she went for a scan where she was told of Kiera’s problem. She was also told that she had to “have her” right away. Thereafter Kiera had to have MRI scans every three months to check to see if the cyst was growing. It was when she was about nine months old that she got really sick. “Kiera was a happy baby, but suddenly she started crying a lot and vomiting. Doctors told us she was fine, but I didn’t believe it. We got another opinion and the doctor told us she required surgery immediately as

>> North Coast business woman tells of her daughter’s struggle with a cyst on her brain the cyst was producing too much fluid, creating enormous pressure on her brain,” said Ritson. Ritson and her husband Brad, a former professional soccer player, were told if Kiera was fine in six weeks, they were in the clear. But just before this milestone, she became really uncomfortable again following a cold. Although doctors said it was dangerous to give general anaesthetic for an MRI to a sick child, her discomfort was so bad they were forced to. The pressure on her brain was terrific, and again she had to have emergency surgery. She had so much fluid on her brain that the remaining left side was pressed into almost a third of her cranium. On her first birthday Kiera had to have a shunt placed in her brain to drain the fluid into her abdomen where the body would re-absorb it. At six months it became apparent Keira had hemiplegia, a form of cerebral palsy, and at 18 months she started having epileptic fits. The seizures could last as long as 30 or 40 minutes and the family were in and out of hospitals with Keira every couple of weeks. “Doctors told us later that she was in fact having continuous fits due to the cyst. After going from specialist to specialist, who all told us different things, a neurologist told us about Dr James Butler and Dr Roger Melville at Constantiaberg Mediclinic, specialists in epilepsy, who could perform various surgeries to remove seizure-

Dr Butler advised them Kiera needed a right functional hemispherectomy and were advised of the benefits and risks of the surgery, but due to Keira’s poor quality of life, they decided to go ahead. She was in theatre from 8am to nearly 4pm. After a harrowing day, Ritson and Brad found Keira stable and able to move normally, although it was two months before the swelling went down and Keira was no longer in pain. “After surgery Keira didn’t want anyone who looked like a doctor or nurse near her – I was the only one she’d let get close. She still gets concerned when told people are sick, so

More than 100 women with their new-born babies who attended the event were given a gift purchased by the nurses at the clinic as an incentive for breast feeding. Addressing the mothers, event organiser Zama Ndlovu said breast milk is not the same as formula milk. “It has unique properties that formula simply can't offer. “A breastfed baby is healthier, pro-

P

UPILS at Bongimfundo Primary School in Zinkwazi recently had a pleasant surprise when they received a donation of schools shoes from Saints Church Stanger in partnership with Crossroads KZN. In order to inspire the pupils Pastor Rajen Soobramoney related a story of how bad the state of schools is in India, yet they the still manage to produce some of the best engineers in the world. “This means you can succeed despite your conditions. “This proves that through hard work and dedication, you can succeed irrespective of

your background and become leaders in different facets of life,” said Soobramoney. School principal Pitamber Ramgathi said the donation will go a long way to improving the lives of the pupils. “There are children with no shoes at all at the school, but they still attend even under those difficult circumstances. Many children walk to school with no shoes. We often overlook certain basic necessities in life and we believe that the school shoes, particularly in the wet and cold weather, will make a difference in the lives of these children.” Apart from the shoes, Jimmy Supramanien provides hot mutton soup every Wednesday mornings for the pupils.

JYOTHI LALDAS AS part of celebrating Nelson Mandela International Month, an outreach programme was held at Mbuyiselo High School in ward 10, Ndulinde by Mandeni Library Services Unit recently. Mayor Siphesihle Zulu delivered an inspiring lecture to the pupils by drawing useful lessons which could be learned from international icon and former statesman Nelson Mandela. The celebration of Mandela Month entailed a narration of Mandela’s early life, his political struggle ideals, his commitment to bringing

about democracy in South Africa as well as the role Mandela played in foreign countries, by Zulu. Zulu also gave a background of the formation of the African National Congress in 1912, citing the leaders such as Prixley ka Isaka Seme, and Anton Lembede in the formation of the Youth League of the ANC. The mayor also planted a tree with pupils to mark the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life. Concluding the lecture Zulu warned pupils to be careful not to become victims of peer pressure but instead to adopt a positive and disciplined lifestyle.

Children warmed up with Mr Price MERVYN KRISHNA MORE than 3 000 pre-primary school children from the KwaDukuza area had much to smile about when Mr Price Home and Mr Price Pro Red Cap Foundation handed them blankets. The handover took place at the Inkanyezi Creche in Shakaville, where children from 52 crèches were each presented with stylish blan-

kets. At the handover Titasi Bolani from the education department thanked Mr Price Pro. “These blankets will come in very handy for our children,”she said. Mr Price Pro marketing director Kerry Strauss said the handover was the highlight of the Mr Price Home and Mr Price Pro Red Cap Foundation project. “This was an opportunity to take what we have, talent and design and combine them to make someone happy,” Strauss said. Mr Price Group sustainability manager Natasja Ambrosio said the investment had been made in a key area. “Seeing the little children wrap themselves in blankets they may not have otherwise, makes me emotional. I have goose bumps.” The teachers and children thanked Mr Price the best way they know how, by parading around the crèche singing and dancing with their blankets.

weeklywheels Avoidance and handling of a hijacking situation • It is important to realise that there is often nothing you can do other than co-operate with the hijackers.

IN recent weeks hijacking has been more prominent in the news, as South Africans waited anxiously for news of the safe return of Mongezi Phike, and mourned for four-year-oldTaegrinMorris,who was murdered by a hijacker. Vehicle tracking and stolen vehicle recovery specialist Cartrack, reports that it has taken many calls from concerned parents for guidance on how to deal with hijacking, particularly when children are in the car. The company advises that while the idea of such a situation is frightening, parents should discuss the possibility of this eventuality with children who are old enough to understand, and talk about how to respond.

• As difficult as it may sound, try toremaincalm, asthehijackerwill respond according to your reaction. • Acknowledge the hijacker’s presence. Don’t make eye contact and keep your hands visible.

• Before leaving home, position yourchild’scarseatonthepassenger side of the vehicle so that you can reach back, undo your child’s safetybeltandbringthemoutwith you in the event of a hijacking. • If you have been hijacked, avoid getting out of the car first and then opening the back doors to get your childout.Ifthisisunavoidableand you are forced to exit your vehicle while a small child is still strapped to a baby seat, take the car keys with you as a “bargaining” tool.

Cartrackhasalsoofferedsome practical pointers: • Be aware of what is happening around you on the road at all times. • Statistically, you are more likely to be hijacked between 4pm and 8pm, especially on a Friday, and most hijackings occur in the victim’s driveway.

• If your children are old enough, take the child-lock off your vehicle and teach them how to undo their safety belt, exit the car and move to safety upon your instruction.

• Prepare yourself mentally and physically for a hijack situation by role-playing a possible scenario with your family. Treat it as a game, sothatyourchildrenwillreact appropriately.

• At all times, let the hijackers know what you are doing and don’t make any sudden moves. — Wheels 24.
