Learners connect with solar >> Zilungisele Primary beams into the 21st Century with R1.8million project JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE beating of celebratory drums was heard at the official opening of the R1.8 million Solar Internet School Project at Zilungisele Primary School in Groutville on Friday morning. Not even the rain could dampen the spirits of the dignitaries, community members, teachers and pupils as home affair minister and former Zilungisele pupil Malusi Gigaba and KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu cut the ribbon to launch the project. Initiated by Hesto Harnesses, the project boasts sponsors such as Samsung, Yazaki (the world's largest producer of wiring harnesses) and Metair Investments Limited. Zinlungisele was chosen out of six schools in the area to receive the

project after presenting the best motivation. The container, situation at the front of the school, is fully solar powered and is equipped with Samsung netbook computers, internet access, an interactive screen and a projector. According to school principal AS Khumalo, the container will be used to educate pupils as well as the community. “Our vision is progress for our pupils, our staff and our community and this is a huge step in the right direction. “The entire Ward nine (Groutville) community will have full access to this facility, which will help them learn how to use technology and become more skilled in order to stand a better chance when applying for jobs.”

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba officially open the project. With them is school principal AS Khumalo. He also said he would like the department of education to join the school in a project to run certified courses using the container. “This could spell a real breakthrough for this area. If people are trained and receive certificates accredited by the department, imagine the progress they would make.” He added that he no longer accepts hand written work from his staff as they now have access to computers and they must learn to use them. “The talk and chalk method of teaching no longer works, we have to move up. It is the 21st Century and education is changing.” Hesto representative Sibusiso Ngcobo said as a former pupil of the school, he is glad to see Zilungisele growning into a 21st Century school. “We must acknowledge all those who contributed to this project, our shareholders and

Samsung, without you none of this would be possible. “Our corporate social responsibility vision and the vision of the school are the same, transforming the workplace and transforming the community and we believe education lies at the heart of transformation. We are positive this new facility will ensure better quality education and in turn transformation.” Addressing pupils and the community, an excited Gigaba said he proud to be involved in such a project. “My root lie here, in this school, in this community and to see such a brilliant project come to my school is exciting. “I will do my best to assist where I can and I urge the community to take full advantage of the opportunities which have opened up for them today. Do not waste these wonderful resources, you have earned them so use them and take care of them.”

ESPITE saying that he is a staunch Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporter, the KwaDukuza man charged with the murder of an ANC member on election day insists he was not responsible for the killing. tried to run across the road and was run over by a utility vehicle travelling on the north bound lane. According to IPSS Medical Response operations manager Paul Herbst two other vehicles ran over the women after she was knocked down. IPSS Medical Response and Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and after examining

a bail application. The State has alleged that IFP supporters were singing and marching past an ANC information table where Mhlongo and other members were also singing. It is believed that Mhlongo was shot as the IFP group walked past the table. Nxumalo has stated in an affidavit that he had an alibi. He also said the evidence given by one of the witnesses was “suspect” as the said witness had been arrested at the scene of the shooting. Denying bail, magistrate

Fariedha Mohamed said the killing has since resulted in political intolerance and it was not in the interests of justice that he be released. According to prosecutor Calvin Govender, the investigating officer, Vusimuzi Shabangu, opposed bail on the grounds that the safety of witnesses could be compromised as well as the safety of Nxumalo himself because Nxumalo’s car had been set alight a day after the murder. He also stated Nxumalo was a flight risk. The case was adjourned until later this month.

IPSS Medical Response attended a third accident on Saturday night on the N2 Zinkwazi south bound where a single vehicle lost control and went off the road. “IPSS Medical Response transported two patients to hospital with moderate injuries,” said Herbst. On Friday morning, one man in his 70s died and two others were injured, one critically, after two vehicles collided head-on along the N2 near Tinley Manor. Reports from the scene indicate that a vehicle travelling north veered off across the centre median and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling south. HACK dwellers at Sheffield can look forward to a new housing development in the near future. This comes after a meeting held by KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu with the shack dwellers last week, where he promised to urgently roll-out housing plans in the area, a short walk away from Umhlali. The commitment comes in the wake of findings made by KwaDukuza Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS), Task team, which is led by Mthembu in his capacity as the locally deployed champion of the government initiative aimed at fast-tracking service delivery in KwaZuluNatal. He paid a brief visit to the informal settlement as part of a multi-pronged approach in the fight against poverty. It came to light that, in the interest of service delivery and social welfare, KwaDukuza Municipality in conjunction with various government departments which form part of the OSS Task Team in the area, will provide decent homes and other services.

Hypertension: An inevitability for South Africans?

L

AST week, a visit to my GP revealed that my blood pressure is through the roof, and that all prescription medicines must be immediately discon tinued, no matter how much good they may be doing for me in other areas. My response to the good doctor was this: How can any South African in his or her right mind NOT have high blood pressure? If Jacob Zuma, ensconced in his pala tial residence at Nkandla, with a servant to attend to his every whim, is falling prey

to ill health, what chance do the rest of us, with mortgages, car payments, infi nite taxes, everrising petrol prices and exorbitant food prices to pay, have of maintaining healthy blood pressure? On top of the constant need to in crease our credit limits to ensure that we can eat and feed our everthirsty cars, we now have to deal with the reality that Ju lius Malema is now a parliamentarian, that Our Esteemed President retains his role for another five years, and that the petrol price is back on its upward spiral this week now that the elections are be hind us. Raising our ire and blood pressure even more is the fact that while we strug gle to get by month to month, some of our neighbours in the upper highway area have been getting sickeningly rich by run ning a R2billion drug den in our own back yard up in Kloof. Not only were they creating mandrax – the stuff which ruins lives and bankrupts addicts – but they were mistreating their dogs too. A quick perusal of today’s headlines remindsuswhymanySouthAfricanswho love the land of their birth and have no desire to leave it are frequently burdened with the question of whether to pack for Perth. Last Sunday’s headlines, for example

included “MP suspected of corruption”, “Councillor gunned down”, “More girls linked to crush porn (where the killing of small animals becomes trendy erotica)”, “Suarez bites again” and “Oscar returns to court tomorrow”. How, in the light of all that, is anyone supposed to keep their blood pressure at 110 over 70? Without having done any research on the matter, I would be willing to wager that the heart attack and stroke rate in South Africa is higher in the second half oftheyear, duetotheseverelackofpublic holidays, increased expectations as we enter the second half of the financial year with targets being nowhere near to half way met, and the rekindling of anxiety re lated to the cost of Christmas presents in relation to the size of annual bonuses which some are lucky enough to receive. In addition, tax season is on us again, wherein some of us will be forced to dis coverthatweowevastsamountsofmon ey to the Receiver of Revenue. It remains to be seen whether simple medication will return me from a state of hyperten sion to a state of normalcy. If not, and if the State of the Nation continues to unravel unchecked, my next column may be written either from Perth or a hospital bed.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Erratum - ‘Mayor slams officials’ YOUR headline article, “Mayor slams officials”, in the Stanger Weekly issue of 13 June 2014 refers. Whilst the above headline is total ly correct, the subheading “Council lors are accused of abusing their posi tions” begs a response. The above subheading is totally incorrect, out of order and bears no reference to the entire article. The Mayor at the Budget Meeting at no stage referred to councillors abusing their positions, instead he called on officials to guide and not mislead Council. I, as a Minority front Councillor in KwaDukuza take strong [exception] to your wrongful allegation as for one the statement is incorrect and at no stage have I as a councillor abused my position. Also take note that all Council meetings are audio recorded and you are most welcome to join myself in listening to the audio recording.

I call on the Stanger Weekly to rectify the “misstatement” in your next issue and also urge that the cor rection be given the prominence in de serves. Knowing the Stanger Weekly to be a community newspaper, I believe that you will heed to the request of the Minority Front. Cllr BB Sing Letters to the editor Footnote: The Stanger Weekly acknowledges the misstatement in our blurb in the above-mentioned article. The blurb should have, in fact, read “Officials are accused of abusing their positions”. The error is regretted.

Hare Krishna street procession JYOTHI LALDAS THE ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) Centre in KwaDukuza, will hold their Harinam on the streets of KwaDukuza this Saturday, 5 July. The Harinam will commence from Sabha Hall at 10am and will proceed through the town. The community is urged to join the procession. According to religious belief, Lord Chaitanya stressed that the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”, is the easiest means of self-realisation. Mantras were only chanted softly until Lord Chaitanya started Harinam Sankirtan, the loud public and congregational chanting of the maha-mantra accompanied by musical instruments. He also taught the devotees to dance to the chanting. It is believed that once one is caught up in the dancing and chanting one becomes completely absorbed in the sound vibrations of the mantra. The mantra then enters one’s consciousness, purifies one’s heart and awakens dormant love for Lord Krishna. It is also believed that this style of chanting Krishna’s holy names also allows others, such as passers-by, animals and plants to benefit from the auspicious effects of the mantra. Following in Lord Chaitanya’s footsteps, devotees chant and dance in the streets, traveling to various places. Prasadam will be served and bonafide scriptural books will be distributed. For more information contact Hare Krishna Das on 082 829 3880.

ORE than 120 orphans from the Groutville Care Homes were treated to an afternoon filled with joy and laughter at the Thembeni Community Hall on Saturday. The children, from as young as three-years-old indulged in a hearty meal with a variety of desserts that made their stomachs smile. Among the children was sevenyear-old Mbali, who was seen running around , gleefully playing with her party pack. When asked what she would want from Santa Claus this Christmas, the chirpylittlegirlansweredonly abracelet to wear on my wrist. “I like bracelets because they are beautiful,” said Mbali as she shied away and hid behind her day-caremother. Besides the meal and party packs, the children were also treated to praise and worship songs and dances by Yvonne and Prabs Naidoo, the dealer

Instead, they would have had to wait three days to pay sellers,” said Mthembu. The mayor added the threeday wait was designed to deter criminals and prevent them from realising a quick fix.

Industry report says Lexus leads in quality and reliability ratings

>> Thanks to TSI engines, fuel economy has improved by up to 20% in the new VW Polo

S

Lexus has come out tops in re cent vehi cle quality awards. A vehicle’s overall reliability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with the lowest score indicating the greatest reliability. J.D. Power global automotive vice president Dave Sargent said Lexus is leading the industry in reliability by a substantial margin. “Vehicle dependability has been a strength of Lexus since it came on to the market, and this year is no exception,” Mr Sargent said. In 2014, Lexus had 34% less issues than its nearest rival, and scored over 48% better than the industry average. J.D. Power claims that the Vehicle Dependability Study is used extensively by manufacturers to help produce better vehicles, which often translates to higher resale values and customer loyalty.

LEXUS has once again proven its reputation for high quality and reliability with the luxury marque dominating the 2014 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study. Lexus had the lowest number of faults of the 32 vehicle brands involved, recording only almost half the industry average. The brand took honours in all four vehicle segments of the study, conducted by US information services company McGraw Hill. Lexus ES 350, GS, LS and RX all received the highest scores for dependability and quality in the survey. The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Studymeasuresproblems experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners of three-year-old vehicles (cars built in 2011) across 202 different areas of the vehicle.

INCE its launch in 2010, the VW Polo hatch has consistently been the second best-selling passenger car in South Africa. The new Polo has been enhanced both visually and technically. The driver assistance and infotainment systems as well as the new TSI engines and the award winning DSG gearbox, have taken the new Polo to another level. Thanks to these TSI engines, the new Polo’s fuel economy has been improved by as much as 20%. Visually, the new Polo can be identified byasharperfrontandreardesign. In addition, the new model introduces fresh colours, new interior materials and new specifications. The new Polo now comes in three equipment levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Customers who want a Polo with rugged but sporty looks can opt for the CrossPolo. Assistance systems that are traditionally associated with cars found in upper segments have found their way into the new Polo. The entry-level derivative’s TSI engine delivers an output of 66kW at 4 800rpm. The claimed combined fuel consumption of this engine is as low as 4.9l/100km. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, and is available with the Trendline and

Comfortline derivatives. The higher specification model is the 1.2 TSI, which delivers an output of 81kW at 5 000rpm, and attains a fuel consumption value of 5.1 l/100km. The 81kW engine is available in the Highline derivatives as well as the CrossPolo. An extra safety feature, known as the Driver Alert system, is standard in Highline derivatives. It detects when a driver’s concentration begins to wane, and emits an acoustic sound, while a message appears in the instrument cluster recommending a break from driving. The new Polo comes standard with a 3 year/45 000km Service Plan, 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year anticorrosion warranty. Service interval is 15 000km.

But, Govender stunned Jayaram in the second set winning 15-13 to keep Dolphins in the hunt for honoours. Govender turned up the heat in the third set cantering to a fluent 15-10 to put immense pressure on the Tongaat skipper. The fourth set was evenly poised with the leader-board changing hands throughout before the scores were locked at 1313. Govender received a standing ovation after two superb winners at the death to win the set 15-13. Dolphinsforgedaheadbyasolitary point on the log standing (6665) after taking a commanding 6-2

Manager of the Dolphins outfit, Vinod Bodasing commended his charges on their outstanding performance and added that the boys can relish the three week recess at the summit of the log table before the league resumes on 22 July. KSST favourites for honours

KSST are favou rites for honours in the Ralph Reu ben memorial knockout tourna ment which re sumes tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm.

WEEKLY REPORTER

KSST Volleyball Club are favourites for hon ours in the 2014 Ralph Reuben memorial knockout tournament which resumes to night (Wednesday) at the association courts at 7pm. KSST hardly worked up a sweat in their emphatic 20 win against Sunbrook to set up a quarterfinal clash against Warriors Sport. KSST boast of wealth of talented players including the likes of setter Sherwin Daniels, Cameron Singh, Kyle Puckiree and LloydChettyandshouldprovetoostrongfor Warriors Sport.

Awaiting KSST in the semi’s is defending champions Grove End. They dethroned league champions KSST in 2013 and beat their rivals in straight sets (20) in their league clash last month. Grove End’s hunger for success must be attributed to the out standing performance of the lanky Vinnie Singh, who plays in tandem with bighitter Neil Perumal. In the bottom half of the draws, rookies Darnall United are lurking as dark horses in the competition and should not be ruled out for honours in their semifinal clash against Randsons or Cool Leaders.

>> Dolphins were determined to return home victorious

OLPHINS IV toppled log leaders Tongaat II (13-6) in a top-of-the-table Dolphin Coast Squash Third Division League game played at the Maidstone squash courts on Tuesday night. Dolphins made the trip to Tongaat, chasing the pace setters by 3points and were determined to return home victorious in the hope of climbing to the top of the log table at the start of the July recess. Ranjith Rhugoonun, playing at number four, put on a spirited performance, holding onto a hard fought 16-14 win against Terrence Jenkinson in the first set of the opening fixture. Jenkinson came back strong midway into the 2nd set, catching his opponent flatfooted with some brilliant dropshots to level the scores at 1-1 after winning the second set 16-14. Wave-gurus seek most epic barrels >> Surfers head to Ballito for Mr Price Pro event

T

HE world’s top ASP Qualifying Series (QS) professionals descended on the wave-rich coast of KwaDukuza, for the start of the ASP Prime-rated Mr Price Pro Ballito on Monday. The second Prime-rated event of the 2014 season has attracted 17 of the top 34 rated surfers on the elite ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), who will go on to compete in the prestigious ASP World Championship (WCT) J-Bay Open, from July

10 to 21. Willard, or Surfers Beach, as locals know it, is a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks just off the rock, north of Ballito’s main beach. Working best on a south-west swell and a low tide, it is known to produce world-class barrels. The exclusive 96-man field is made up of 88 surfers who qualified through their world rankings, plus six wildcards in David

van Zyl (CT), Slade Prestwich (DBN), Dylan Lightfoot (J-Bay), Michael February (CT), Fred Patacchia Jnr (HAW) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA). Brandon Jackson (DBN) and Shane Sykes (Salt Rock) are the final two qualifierswhoearnedtheirplacesintothemain event courtesy of the Mr Price Pro Ballito trials, presented by Surfing South Africa, on Saturday. Jackson proved the standout of the day, winning the four-man final over fellow advancing surfer Sykes, who finished runner-up. “I used to compete on the QS, so rocking up this morning and seeing all the familiar faces felt great,” Jackson said. “Last year I missed out on the trials, so I am really stoked to come back, take it out and get into the main event.” World number 11 and 2010 Mr Price Pro Ballito Champion Jordy Smith (DBN), heads up the draw as the top seed for the event and will settle for nothing less than a podium finish. “EveryeventIenter,Iaimforthepodium. South Africa is home. “I love nothing more than winning in front of my home crowd,” Smith said. Joining Smith are fellow elite WCT campaigners Kai Otton (AUS), former ASPWorldChampionCJHobgood(USA), Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Sebastian Zietz (HAW) who make up the event’s top five seeds. Other surfers to look out for include past champions Glen Hall (IRL) 2012, Patrick Gudauskas (USA) 2011 and Tanner Gudauskas (USA) 2009, as well as former Pipeline Master Jeremy Flores (FRA).

Durban’s Brandon Jackson has qualified for the Mr Price Pro in Ballito after winning the Mr Price Pro trials at the weekend. They will be met with fierce competition from QS rating leaders Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), winner of the ASP Prime Quiksilver Saquarema Pro in Brasil and Matt Banting (AUS) who is fresh of a win at the 6-Star Los Cabos Open of Surf in Mexico. The Surfline swell forecast looks promising with consistent surf for the week ahead. Fun, waist high surf is expected today and tomorrow, increasing to chest and even some shoulder high sets through on Wednesday. A similar size SSW to S groundswell is on the radar for around Fri-
