Spelling Bee is here >> Outstanding spellers stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes

WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HE wait is finally over for Durban and North Coast pupils whoentered the2014KZNPremier Spelling Bee competition. They will be tested on Saturday 30 August at Stanger High School in KwaDukuza to see who takes the title of queen or king Bee. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN has partnered with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier to roll out the popular competition throughout the province. The spelling bee originallystarted in Zululand, and is enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is critical that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and harnessed to guarantee the continuous socio-economic development of the province and the country. “In doing so, we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment

and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Groutville High School deputy principal Muzi Ndulini said the Spelling Bee is a great opportunity for learners. “It is not just about the prizes, for us it is most important that the pupils learn from the experience and share their knowledge with others. We are grateful for this opportunity,” he said. Groutville grade 11 teacher Mthobisi Mbele said the pupils have been working hard to do well at the competition. “The learners are excited for the Spelling Bee and they have been working hard, with lots of energy and eagerness to learn,” he said. Pupils have had almost two months to learn the words that were released on 20 June. The first leg of this year’s competition was held in Richards Bay a few weeks ago, where16-year-oldWendyGoqo from Mningi High spelled

MERVYN KRISHNA A LARGE crowd of mourners including members of the Zulu royal family, high powered government officials and politicians paid their last respects to Chief Khayelihle Mathaba last week in eMacambini. Mathaba died in an accident in Nkwalini near Melmoth two weeks ago. Mourners described Mathaba as an extraordinary, determined and resilient leader who fought to uphold the image of traditional institutions. Premier Senzo Mchunu said Mathaba’s death had left a void in his community and in the greater province. “Inkosi Mathaba was instrumental in reconstruction of the province. He always had his community in mind on issues of development. The province has lost a giant when it comes to the traditional institutional leadership,” he said. T

he thousands of cuttlefish and squid that have been washing up on the shores of Ballito beach es some alive and some dead are as a result of cold weather, says Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. EKZNW’s Lionel van Schoor assured callers that the phenomenon was most likely not due to pollu tion, but rather to an upwelling of very cold water. “Thesoutheasterlywindshavebeenblowinghard the last few days, bringing with it cold weather and seas,” said van Schoor. An upwelling is where deep, cold and normally nutrient rich waters are brought to the surface by changes in ocean currents and wind related phe

nomena. The upwellings bring a major temperature drop to the waters. The sea water has reportedly been well below 20 degrees Celsius over the past week a lot lower than one would expect at this time of year. Along with this drop in temperature is the inflow of a large amount of food and nutrients that could attract cuttlefish but also be their demise, in that they are not able to withstand the very cold water and drastically changing conditions, experts say. Van Schoor said the species could not handle the colder water, being used to warmer water. He said this may be attributed to climate change, but that this could not be confirmed. Van Schoor added the fish may have been feeding on the squid due to a lack of sardines this season, causing them to wash up “half dead”. “Our scientists have been made aware of the issue and they are investigating further,” said van Schoor. Van Schoor said this happens every year at this time, but it is rare for such numbers to be washed up. Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quentin Power said he noticed about 300 cuttlefish in a 60m area on the beach at Salmon Bay on Sunday. “I also received reports of squid and cuttlefish be ing washed up between Willard beach and Thomp son’s bay,” said Power.

Gemini Motors dealer principal Jeetan Bodasingh handing over the fleet of vehicles to iLembe District Mayor Welcome Mdabe.

MERVYN KRISHNA THE iLembe District Municipality saw it fitting to invest in buying a fleet of 70 new vehicles, including water tankers, crew cabs and double cabs to assist their “efficiency” going forward. The vehicles were handed to iLembe Mayor Welcome Mdabe at a ceremony on Monday, 25 August at the iLembe Auditorium. Other stakeholders including officials from Wesbank,GeminiMotors,CMHTrucks, municipals officials and councillors attended the event. Mdabe, is his address, said the purpose behind the initiative is to ensure that as the municipality they keep and fulfil their primary responsibility and task of ensuring and enhancing service delivery to the community. “We are convinced as the municipality that

this initiative will benefit our community in a very positive way and bridge the gap between complaints and the response within a reasonable time. “The fleet was distributed amongst all the unitsof the municipality(KwaDukuza,Mandeni, Maphumulo and Ndwedwe) and they are already on the ground working to make the lives of our people better,” said Mdabe. Acting municipal manager Jeff Khumalo said at iLembe, service delivery is on the top of their agenda. “I have already held meetings with the drivers and informed them that they will undergo advanced driving lessons provided by Wesbank. If they break the speed limit, then we will immediately receive an sms and will deal with the respective drivers accordingly,” said Khumalo.

I

RECENTLY covered the ‘Eskom Expo For Young Scientists North Coast’ regional finals at the University of Zululand. I had been looking forward to the event since last November. Needless to say, I was very happy it was finally happening. When I first learned of it, I was surprised it existed at all. Yousee, last yearIwasrunningupanddown eSikhawini(myhometown)tryingtoestab lish a science organisation to host a science fair fortheschoolsinthe‘loxion’to partici pate in. That venture has yet to bear fruit, but I will continue trying. My anticipation for the science fair I attend ed that day, my very first, quickly soured as I went through the many project displays.

Whilstquite anumberofprojectsimpressed me, there weren’t enough of them, particu larly from previously disadvantaged schools. Look,Iwasnotexpectingtoseeperpetu al motion machines or someone disproving the general theory of relativity, but I was looking forward to projects that showed some real scientific prowess. For example, one project consisted of a series of “failed” experiments where a pair of young scien tists tried to show the effect of music on the growth of fungi. Their project display was splashed with their many attempts at trying to prove that dubstep made fungi grow faster when com pared to classical music. They had no such luck. You see, science is not about being right, it is about trying to find a truth in a systematic way and sometimes this takes great perseverance, a quality these two young scientists displayed. It was quite sad to see how a lot of the substandard projects were from “previously disadvantaged schools” (a euphemism for ruralandtownshipschoolsthatweredenied proper laboratories because the African child had “no business learning maths and science”). A number of them were not science proj ects at all, instead they were cutnpaste inserts from the Internet and did not ask or answer any scientific questions, as re quired. It may be the awkward nerd in me, but I found this incredibly sad.

OPINION

The science fair is a great initiative and a very important event in any young scien tist and engineer's life, which I believe could make or break the idea of science at the early stage. Not all of us will become scientists, but I believe that it is important to have a com munity of individuals who understand and appreciate the scientific method. I think this makes us better people who are also less ignorant and more open minded. Wouldn’t it just be a better world if we were all scientifically literate? Anyway, when 1994 ushered in the new democraticregime,a neweducationsystem was introduced so that a pupil in kwaD langezwa and another in Arboretum study the same chemistry because they are now both considered equal. Itseemsthatthisisnotthecase.Yousee, it took centuries to reenforce the idea that African pupils are less inclined to under stand science and mathematics in the minds of the township schools’ pupils and teachers alike. We must also admit, however, that sci ence and mathematics is not yet seen as a viable career path for many parents to advisetheirchildren topursue.Itis, however, still up to communities (parents, teachers the SGBs) to take science and mathematics education seriously. This column should also serve as my an tiprocrastination effort at not being an othernaysayerwhosees“theproblem”and does not propose a solution. My intention isto work withschoolsincommunities such as in eSikhawini with their science fair en tries for the coming year. Hopefully, thiswillbe oneofmanyinitia tivesIwillbe involved in,intermsof improv ing science education in our socalled township and rural schools. Interested? Call me. I would be more than happy to see how and where I can help.

Dinosaurs and the Bible YEs, Mr Lawson, thanks be to Al mighty God that here in South Africa we still have the freedom to debate about religion and politics and Mr Hill, I made no such assertion that “dinosaurs were plodding around the planet when the first books of the Old Testament were composed”. Moses penned the five books of the Torah, roughly about 3500 years ago so dinosaurs were not around in the time of Moses but they were around in the time of Adam and Eve and their descendants, who them selves were very tall and strong, like giants, and lived for hundreds of years. The book of Genesis gives the expla nation of the entire creation; making clear that each species, including man kind was created separately. The book of Job is far more ancient and describes an animal called a behemoth with a cedarlike tail (the cedars of Lebanon were valued above all timbers in ancient antiquity. They were 130 feet tall and their stout trunks could be over 8 feet in di ameter) and Psalms 74:13 also talks about dragons. Scientist Richard Owen first used the word dinosaur in 1842, which means terrible lizard, so it is a relatively new word and this is why we don’t find the word “dinosaur” written in the Bible. Furthermore, there are hundreds of early British and French explorers and trappers and American explorers and settlers that wrote down reports of sightings of giant mastodon bones still lying on the ground.

The fact is that fossilisation does not take millions of years since under the right conditions a bone, an old boot, and even wood can become filled with minerals fairly quickly. Necessary ingredients for fossilisa tion, even in a few thousand years are these; a quick burial under very deep water or volcanic ash. Consider the Great Flood of Noah’s time — this would have provided excel lent conditions for fossilisation of plants and animals. There would have been a rapid burial by millions of tons of water and sediment. The fact is that today there are many dinosaur remains that are still not completely turned into rock and that have not been fossilised; millions of these have been found as bone. Even today they are finding fish fossils that still have a fishy smell to them. The flood may have been the reason that many of the dinosaurs died out. Even the sea creatures would have died since many of their prey could have perished in the flood. They could also have died from disease or in some cases, hunted into extinction. Regardless, it is obvious that the dinosaurs did roam the earth at one time. My point being: belief in the Bible and the knowledge of the existence of dinosaurs IS not incompatible. Is this plainly preposterous and against all reason? I think not! SUE NAIDOO

Stanger Secondary alumni step up >> Past pupils donate funds to help beloved school with its infrastructure challenges JYOTHI LALDAS

HE Stanger Secondary School class of 1994 has raised R20 000 to assist their alma mater after discovering that the school is facing serious infrastructural problems. The class of ‘94 recently held their

20yearreunionforwhichtheyundertook a collection. The remaining funds were pooled and it was decided that the class would donate it to the school as a show of gratitude. In the spirit of giving, spontaneous pledges were made during the event resulting in the substantialdonation. On visiting the school to hand over the funds, former pupils Vanessa Pillay and Adhir Maharaj took a tour of the school to find that the block of classrooms they once inhabited has all but fallen away. “The school is 94 years old, it is inevitable that it would face such problems. What is sad to note, however, is that even though a number of influential Stangerites attended the school, few if any have come back to give back,” said Maharaj. At present three classrooms in the U Block are dilapidated, the ceil-

ings have caved in, windows are broken and the classes are unsafe for use. Pupils are being taught in makeshift prefab classrooms which are not conducive to learning. Teacher Dan Moodley said the classes have been falling apart for years and despite numerous requests to the Department of Education, nothing has been done. The class of ‘94 is now challenging all former pupils to match or beat their donation. In addition, the class is still in the process of raising funds to assist the school. For more information on the condition of the school or to find out how you can help, call school principal Viren Gangaram on 032 551 1227.

CHILDREN with autism, when compared with typicalchildren, appeartohaveexcesscellular connections in their brains. Researchers report that children with autism appear to have excess synapses – cellular connections – in their brains compared with typical children. The scientists also believe it might be possible to reduce the number of extra synapses through drug treatment. Synapses and brain function Synapses are the points in the brain where brain cells (neurons) connect and communicate with each other. Having excess synapses may have a major impact on how the brain functions, theorisedneuroscientistsatColumbia University Medical Centre in New York City. The extra synapses in the brains of autistic children are due to a slowdown in the normal brain "pruning" process during development, the researchers believe. "It's the first time that anyone has looked for, andseen, alackofpruningduringdevelopment of children with autism, although lower numbersofsynapsesinsomebrainareashave been detected in brains from older patients and in mice with autistic-like behaviours," study senior investigator, David Sulzer, a professor of neurobiology, said in a Columbia news release. His team also found that rapamycin, an immuno suppressant that helps prevent rejection in organ transplants and coats some coronarystents, canrestorenormalsynapticpruning and improve autistic-like behaviour in mice. The effect was seen even when the drug was given to the mice after they developed those behaviours. The drug causes side effects that might prevent its use in people with autism, the researchers said. However, "the fact that we can see changes in behaviour suggests that autism may still be treatable after a child is diagnosed, if we can find a better drug," Sulzer added. Pruning defect For the study, he and his colleagues examined 26 brains of youngsters with autism – 13 aged two to nine, and 13 aged 13 to 20. All the children had died from causes other than autism. Their brains were compared to 22 autopsied brains of children without autism. Theresearchersmeasured"synapsedensity" in a small section of tissue in each brain. By late childhood, synapse density fell by about half in the brains of children without autism, but fell only 16% in the brains of those with autism. The researchers also found clues about what causes the pruning defect in the brains ofchildrenwithautism, accordingtothestudy, which was published online in the journal Neuron.

Acupuncture treats infertility >> Ancient technique can help to cure unexplained infertility

A combination of acupuncture, cupping, therapeutic massage and Chinese herbal medicine yields positive results.

A

CUPUNCTURE for fertility is an alternative treatment that has opened the doors to restore fer tility naturally. In simple terms, infertility of a couple is defined as the inability to give birth to children, even after several suc cessful attempts of sexual intercourse. Infertility refers to the impaired repro ductive system and can occur in both sexes.

An infertile woman does not show signs of pregnancy, in spite of having unprotected sexual intercourse on a regular basis, for a period of one year. Are there any solutions to fertility prob lems? Well, acupuncture could be the solution to regain the lost fertility. In traditional Chinese medicine the procedure promotes proper flow of vi tal energy in our body which is impor tant for a healthy living.

How acupuncture works for fertility Acupuncture is a natural way to treat infertility problems. This ancient tech nique can help to cure unexplained in fertility. Acupuncture stimulates blood flow in different parts of the body in cluding the reproductive system, which in turn benefits to improve pregnancy rate. It is explained below: Does acupuncture increase fertility in women? Yes, of course (by nearly 60%). How? Well, ovulatory dysfunction is of ten the main culprit behind female in fertility. Ovulation is a process in which an egg is expelled from the ovary. This release of egg is necessary to get preg nant. Ovulation is an important phase in a woman's reproductive cycle. Now, in fertility in women occurs when the ovu lationcycleisirregular.Chancesofpreg nancy are less if the woman has an ir regular ovulation cycle. However, it is found that acupuncture could help to resolve this issue. Acupuncture for fertility can play a very important role to regulate the ovu lation cycle. In other words, it increases ovarian function, thereby improving the chances of getting pregnant. Acupuncture for male fertility Infertilityproblemsinmenareoftenas sociated with a low sperm count. A

woman wanting to get pregnant is like ly to be disappointed if her sexual part ner suffers from a low sperm count. Sufficient sperm production during sexual intercourse is important to achieve pregnancy. One of the best ways to stimulate sperm production in order to increase the probability of get ting pregnant, is to undergo acupunc ture sessions. Studies have shown that acupunc ture for fertility is a proven way to en hance sperm count. Production of bad quality sperm is another reason why women fail to fall pregnant. How to boost sperm quality in men Acupuncture could be the answer to this question. Research has shown that spermqualityimprovesdrasticallywith this therapy. A combination of acupuncture, cupping, therapeutic massage and Chinese herbal medicine yields positive results. Therefore, consultation with an ex periencedandcertifiedacupuncturistis a prerequisite to successfully overcome fertility problems. If you have tried other modalities and have failed, then try acupuncture — it is safe, cost effective and natural. Century of Maserati MASERATIbroughtitspast, presentandfuturetolife in celebrating the marque’s 100th birthday at the Monterey Car Week in California recently. As the featured marque at Pebble Beach’s Con cours d’Elegance, the celebration was stylish, re minding petrolheads of the same event in 1968, when a Maserati Mistral Coupé took top honours as best of show. Coming back to the present, the lawn at this Con cours d’Elegance was packed with examples of Ma serati’s rich history, including — in the Maserati Cen tennial Racing Class — a 1954 A6GCS Spyder, a 1955 Maserati 250F Monoposto, and a 1956 Maserati 300S Fantuzzi Spyer. The1954A6GCStookthetrophyforbestgrantur ismo, noted for its artistic beauty and high level of performance. One of the most fascinating cars of all time, de signed by Pininfarina in 1954, the A6GCS proved a valuable source of inspiration for the designers of to day’s Alfieri concept. This highly acclaimed concept made its North American debut during a special centennial celebra tion at the Mazda Raceway during the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion, where Maserati was also the honoured marque. Lorenzo Ramacioitti, head of Fiat Chrysler Auto mobile Global Design, presented the stunning con cept, saying “this car has a racing breed, but with a kick of poetry. The new Alfieri also made a star turn on the con cept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It was a birthday party worthy of a century.

Getting your garden ready for spring WEEKLY REPORTER SPRING is just around the corner. Be a step ahead and get your garden ready in ad vance to turn it into a haven of tranquillity and beauty. Spring Clean Your Garden When getting your garden ready for the warmer months, it is important to start with a clean garden. Deweeding is easier when the earth is still moist and you can easily pull out any unwanted plants. Leaves also discolour during winter, so cut back any old leaves to make space for fresh ones. Get rid of any annual plants that have run their course so that you can plant the new seasons annuals. Annual plants are great for splashes of colour in your garden, especially for board ers, planters or hanging baskets. This is also the best time to prune and trim trees and shrubs, the cuts will heal faster in the cold. Rake away any dead leaves and debris lying around. This spring clean will make a huge difference to your garden and give you a better idea of where you can plant new plants. Spruce Up Your Sprinklers To keep your plants happy in the warm er months, it is important to water them daily. A sprinkler system is the easiest way of doing this, especially if you have an au tomated system. Drip sprinklers will work best in some places in your garden and other areas can be reached by spray sprinklers. If you already have a sprinkler system, make sure that it is in working order and that you've got no blockages in the pipes, leakages or broken sprinkler heads.

Come and celebrate our August savings!

Food for the Soil Due to rain and re working of soil, the fertile top layer of soil sometimes gets depleted and the impor tant nutrients that plants need diminish es. The easiest way of boosting the soil again is by working compost into the top layer. If you've made a pile of the dead leaves when you were cleaning up, you can also work this into the soil. A wide range of commercially available plant food is available if you want to give your garden an extra nutrient rich kick start. Luscious Lawns In winter the cold might cause your lawn to become bare or develop brown patches. Scarifying or raking the grass helpsbringlightandairtothesoilleveland encourages lush, green growth.
