ROTESTING, which began during the first week of September, shows no sign of abating after three trucks were set alight by an angry mob on the R74 near Ashville on Sunday. It is believed that hundreds of resi-

dents from Ashville, Glendale and surrounding areas are protesting due to lack of service delivery in the area. According to KwaDukuza SAPS communicationsofficerConstableSibusiso Khumalo hundreds of protesters have blocked the road with skips, logs and debris. The protesters are also believed to

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu visited the area on Sunday in a effort to calm protesters. However, the meeting with them was disrupted and he was forced to leave the area. “A group of people disrupted the meeting while we were recessing. We are going to engage the community and see how we can move forward in terms of avoiding these problems of burning tyres [and so on],” he said.

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, announced last week that government is exploring the idea to make taxi ranks a gun–free zone. The meeting, held at the KwaDukuza Town Hall with the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo taxi operators, was triggered by the shooting at the KwaDukuza taxi rank which left seven people wounded recently. Mchunu announced that government has launched a clean-up operation to root out illegal operators and the use of illegal security guards. “This clean–up operation started at the weekend and we impounded eight vehicles belonging to illegal operators in Maphumulo. “In the same operation, police also arrested three security guards who are allegedly involved in the recent shooting. “Moreover, three fire arms and 180 live rounds of ammunition were confiscated during the operation. HEN Isaac Gumede’s uncle was killed by criminals almost 20 years ago, he made the decision to dedicate his life to fighting crime. Last week, the brave crime fighter, like his uncle, was killed by criminals. Gumede was shot at his home in Ntshawini in full view of his family. It is believed that he was confronted by an armed man who

Gumede, whowasamemberofthe Community Policing Forum in KwaDukuza, together with his team, played a major role in arresting criminals and bringing crime down in the Ntshawini area for many years. Umhlali SAPS clamp down on crime

W

HILE most North Coast SAPS statistics for the 2013/2014 year show an increase in crime, those from Umhlali SAPS station show a massive drop. The statistics were released by the SAPS last week, amid much national debate and concern about the general trend of increased crime. Umhlali SAPS figures show crimes such as sexual offences, attempted murder, robbery and drug-related crimes have dropped by - substantially - more than half. Statistics show assault with in-

tention to do grievous bodily harm decreased from 265 to 73 incidents and common assault from 214 to 53. Sexual crimes were at 99 incidenceslastyear, andhavedropped to 28 this year. Residential robbery went down from 512 cases to 109 and theft from inside motor vehicles from 130 to 25. After an alarming 150 percent increase in break-ins from the 2011/2012 to the 2012/2013 year, this is no small feat. Drug-related crime is also down massively, from 426 cases to 43. Attempted murder went down from 39 to 10 cases reported this

year. Umhlali SAPS acting station commander Dieter Fittkau said theimprovementcanbeattributed to the help of the community. “I think more community involvement and having specific targeted policing activities have helped us to clamp down on crime,” said Fittkau. He said community initiatives such as the Community Policing Forum and Salt Rock and Ballito Neighbourhood Watch, among others, have been instrumental in reporting crimes, so that the SAPS are always on top of crime matters. However, KwaDukuza and

The North Coast KwaDukuza Ratepayers Association is also demanding that KwaDukuza council fires useless and corrupt officials who have ruthless attitudes about their obligations to deliver proper services.

KWADUKUZA ratepayers say they are being ripped off as rampant theft of municipal assets goes unchecked. Apparently insiders have stolen items totalling R1.3 million and now the municipal accounting officer (municipal manager) NJ Mdakane, has recommended to council to approve the write-off of the missing items. Whitehouse Centre situated on the corner of Mahatma Gandhi and Chief Albert Luthuli Streets in Stanger, formerly known as the Stanger Hotel, was developed into Whitehouse Centre some 25 years ago. Originally starting their business in King Shaka Street, and then moving to the premises next door to their current building in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, the owners have certainly come a long way. With successful retail businesses/tenants on the ground floor and professional business offices on the upper level, the Whitehouse Centre is clearly the business hub of the Stanger CBD. The success of the centre is based on the traditional hands on, in-house approach, and the fact that the owner and management offices are based in the centre. The owner and management have always maintained good, healthy relationships with their many long-standing, loyal tenants and have always ensured that their tenants are left completely satisfied with regards to leasing, security, maintenance etc. Whitehouse Centre boasts not only a professional, clean and healthy environment to operate a business from but also has ample-free parking,a 24 hour top notch security surveillance system and near future developments to extend and expand their retail leasing space which will include level-free parking. So if you are looking to lease retail or office space, visit the management offices situated on the upper level and let them help you get started on your road to success.

The best-practice model - that will be developed through this process will be inclusive of existing statutory requirements and population and development-related issues. Outsourced Insight owner Stephen Rule said the workshop will first be an information-gathering exercise. “We will be collecting perceptions about what is happening and not happening within all four of the iLembe district’s municipalities. “Oncethisiscomplete, thewayforward will be discussed by interested and affected parties,” said Rule. He said this was the first meeting of many. Next week’s meeting will give members of the public a chance to have their say. “There are instances in the area with regard to population that are not ideal. For example, Ndwedwe has a negative population growth. We need to find out why and how this can be solved. There are other areas that are not controlled and have a huge influx of people, causing pressure on services and infrastructure,” said Steyn. He added that municipalities are approving new developments, such as gated estates, without there being sufficient electricity and water to support them. “Ballito is heading for major water restrictions if this is not dealt with urgently. There is already great strain on electricity supply, with outages being the norm,” said Steyn. KZNLegislature’sAnnMcDonnell, who attended the workshop, said it could be very effective if the “right people attended.” “The IDP is not always taken seriously. Many large projects, like the Peaking Plant, go ahead without having been properly provided for in the IDP. The public also needs to get involved. Attendance at the public meetings is poor, and thus just becomesa‘box-ticking’exerciseformunicipalities,” said McDonnell.

The joys of being a Durbanite

STEPH MCLENNAN

T

HERE are things about living in Durban, and indeed in South Africa, that are undeniably repulsive. The volume of whoonga-addicted beggars at traffic lights with hangdog expressions and their branded clothing hidden under a nearby bush. The rapists, murderers and thieves. The Zumas. The fact that the only car one can buy in pink is a Suzuki Alto. I could carry on. Over the course of writing this oft-cynical column, I have been told by at least one reader to pack my bags and leave, or stop whinging about South Africa. Well, senders of hate-mail, today I am going to extol the virtues of our prodigious province and our

so-called rainbow nation as a whole. I do not intend to make this sound like a tourism brochure, but if anyone were to be inclined to hire me as a travel writer based on this piece, the door to negotiation is always open. Likeanawkwardconversation, I am going to start with the weather. While Our city swelters under hair-raising humidity (literally, hair raising). However, I realised after visiting Singapore a few years ago that saying Durban is humid is like calling a garden snake a deadly beast. It could be so, so much worse. Salaries, one might argue, are farhigherinJohannesburgthanin our relatively sleepy town. This is true, and somebody doing your job in Johannesburg may earn 30% more than you. This after they fight traffic 80% longer than you do, pay obscene amounts of money for their pieces of property neighbouring a mine dump, and pay etolls because the gantries, amazingly enough, have still not been pulled down by vigilantes.

Inlivingthislifestyleinournear the city of gold, they manage to save a small amount of money each year. And what do they do with it? Spend it on their annual trip to the coast, when they will spend a weekortwoinDurbanorMargate, clamouring with their counterparts to claim a spot on the beach or get their kid onto one of the rides at uShaka Marine World. Capetonians boast of the cleanliness of their city, which cannot be disputed. Theyspeaklovinglyofthewhite sand on their beaches, where the water is so cold that by sticking in a toe, it is possible to freeze off a nipple. Admittedly, Cape Town does have one thing that we don't - a mountain. If anyone ever tells you that Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg or Pofadder are better places to live than Durban, be charitable and book them an appointment with the next available psychiatrist. Only Egypt, Angola, Yemen and Libya ranked slightly lower. With little or no effort you have managed to provide yourselves with untold wealth at the expense of the country and have now successfully managed to deprive the youth of a decent education and future. The country is a shambles. Municipalities are going bankrupt, hospitals are in a disastrous state, Telkom and Eskom are broke and are in turmoil. SAA is constantly being bailed out and SABC and e-Tags are nightmares that have gone wrong,to name a few of your achievements. You, the voters are part of this problem too for allowing them to continue unabated for the past 20 years. Keep up the good work - it won’t be long before we are a fully fledged banana republic. I hope you are proud of yourselves. No Hope

serves, the big five, mountains and more natural beauty than could arguablybefoundanywhereinthe world. We have beaches, waves and markets to be freely laid upon, surfed and explored. Our entertainment scene is improving in leaps and bounds, with Big Concerts actually not leaving us out of The Script's tour which is planned for early next year. Our local comedy scene is flourishing, thanks to some talented locals. As a whole, South Africa (touch wood) seems to be a low priority for the terrorist organisations which threaten the USA, the UK, and other first world nations. Thus far, in dealing with our own problems, we seem to have largely avoided the inadvertent or intentional offending of any notable religious group. As a nation, we have been through hell. Some of us are still suffering immeasurable hardships. But, Durbanites, we suffer our lot under the warmth of the sunshineandsurroundedbypeopleso laid back they are almost lying down. Things could be worse. Happy Heritage Day, Durban.

DA says no to this ‘pie in the sky’ project KZN MEC, Mike Mabuyakhulu’s dogged determinationtosoldieronwithhis “pieinthesky” Drakensburg cableway project in the face of an increasingly difficult economic climate becomes more farcical with each day. TheinvolvementofIthalaDevelopmentBankannounced recently raises another red flag. The KZN portfolio committee for tourism has not yet met to discuss this project. To be informed by the media that Ithala is taking over the reins on this project is frankly insulting to the newly elected legislature. According to media reports, Ithala will be responsible for driving funding for the project, and for the business model. This is alarming in light of the failed Dolphin Whispers development in the Point area of Durban - also driven by Ithala Bank – and the many other “white elephants” left in its wake around the province. During the recent KZN budget approval process, the DA ppealed to Mabuyakhulu and his department to get the basics right first. This means putting any grand plans for a cableway on the back burner. Departmental priorities should be the upgrade of roads and accommodation, particularly in the Hluhluwe-UmfoloziPark,whileaccessroadsand signage to all KZN’s tourism sites need to be maintained to enhance the experience of a visit to our province. A cableway in a remote corner of the Drakensburg is doomed to fail. Ann McDonnell, MPL DA KZN spokesperson on Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs

A good campaign I ENJOYED reading about your Spelling Bee competitions throughout KZN and I think that the people who started this competition must receive praise. As a teacher, I think it is an excellent tool toencouragepupilstoputextraeffortintotheir languagedevelopment, butIamsadthatitwas notasbigasalloftheotheryearsandtheprizes were a lot smaller. I have seen the effects in our own school, where the children actively try to use new words in their essays and written work, and I think the spelling bee and the enthusiasm with which they learnt the words for the competition had a big role to play. May it grow bigger next year. English teacher

Yet many of us use painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines to mask pain so they can continue with their training. Why would we do this? Prevention is better than cure Screening tests provide valuable information at an earlier stage of disease, often before it becomes more serious. Early detection will help put preventive strategiesinplacetogether with the supervision of a medical doctor to get your back to good health. These tests include: - PAP smears which help to detect cervicalcancer.Womenin their 20s should get a pap smear at least once every two years. - Blood pressure and blood glucose tests which may show whether you are at risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. - BMI tests help to indicate whether an individual is overweight. Seven out of 10 South African women are overweight putting them at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and osteoarthritis.

HOW are you going to manage, especially consider-

ing that you are probably totally exhausted already? A South African born GP, Dr Frank Lipman, who is regarded as a pioneer and internationally recognisedexpertinthefieldsofIntegrativeandFunctional Medicine advises on these seven sure-fire ways to ensure you have sustained energy right through to the end of the year: * Cut out caffeine and go slow on alcohol A cup of tea or coffee may give you a short-term lift, but a new study shows that caffeine consumption even six hours before bedtime can have significant, disruptive effects on sleep. * Cut out sugar - Dr Lipman believes sugar can put enormous stress on hormones – when you crash from a sugar high your adrenal glands kick in and releasecortisol,asteroid-likesubstance,tohelpliftyou up again. To combat this, he says you should cut out sugar and artificial sweeteners. * Avoid processed fats - Processed fats and foods are toxic to the body, particularly if you’re run down. Avoid hydrogenated fats and trans fats as they not only increase bad cholesterol, but are said to also block the uptake of good fatty acids such as omegas three, six and nine – needed for healthy brain function, eyes, joints and skin. *Eatmostofyourfoodbylunchtime -Thebody’s metabolism reaches its peak by lunchtime (slowing down as the sun starts to set) and you should use this to your advantage by making breakfast and lunch your largest meals of the day.

Celebrating Heritage Day >> Knowing your heritage is the key to celebrating it

W

HAT Is Our Heritage? As South Africa celebrates Heritage Month, we have an opportunity to reflect on what our collective heritage actually is. This is apt as we look back on what we have achieved in the first 10 years of South Africa's freedom and democracy. Several public attempts have been made to define heritage, to capture its essence in the South African context. Invariably, questions are raised about itsvalueandworth, andparticularlyitsrole in helping us meet some of our many challenges. Some have loosely defined heritage as "something possessed as a result of one's natural situation or birth" or "inherited from the past, passed on by those - people, experiences and events - that have come before us". Both of these are true of South Africa's heritage, which also encompasses our history, values, norms and culture. Givenourdiversity, itisdifficulttospeak of any of these in a singular sense. Through an extensive consultative process and critical analysis of various research findings as part of the Brand South Africa campaign, the International Marketing Council defined our heritage in terms of three elements: who we are, what we have and how we do things. Who we are In a way, who we are and who we

Unity in diversity is the key to heritage in South Africa. choose to be as a nation is very much a product of our collective heritage. Because of our history and the lessons drawn from it, we have chosen to gather strength in our diversity and not to regard or use it as a divisive tool. The celebratory Khoisan term Ke e Xarra Ke ("United in Diversity") serves as a living testimony to the choice we made more than ten years ago - to find peaceful and productive ways of resolving our differences, which has led to all of us living as one nation. That choice makes it possible for us today to proudly speak of "unity in diversity". South Africans have a pioneering spirit,

courageandthedeterminationtosucceed. These traits continue to drive us as we deal with the challenges of building a nationoncedivided, tofindingfreshandinnovative solutions in dealing with these challenges. The optimism and encouragement we find in unlikely places and from the most unexpected people, fuels our task of bettering the lives of our fellow South Africans and at the same time, ensuring that we compete with the best in the world. What we have Increasingly, South Africans are beginning to appreciate what we have inherited and what we are collectively capable of.

Similar to the rich and diverse natural resources of this beautiful land and its wildlife, we have a productive diversity, caring strength and creative ingenuity that is building a country that is adored and envied by the world. To most of the world, we are viewed as havingsomuchtooffertoallofourcitizens andtherestoftheinternationalcommunity. Examples are: Our country's successful transformation from a pariah state to a stable and prosperous democracy, which has led to South Africa being respected and revered internationally for its most progressive constitution Our ability to turn atragicsituationintoalessonfortheworld - our transition to a democratic state was expected to be marred by violence and retribution, but instead it was an astounding lesson in reconciliation Our underlying wealth and natural assets and the talent of all South Africans - the world comes to South Africa to see its beautiful skies and beaches, Table Mountain and the game reserves, which always fulfil their expectations. However, what amazes and surprises visitors is that they fall in love with the warmth and friendliness of our people, which always entices them to come back for more South African smiles and caring attitudes. Ways to celebrate our heritage The Oxford dictionary defines heritage as "what is or may be inherited and a portion allotted to anyone".

WEEKLY September is Heritage Month in South Africa and it is every South African's right to embrace and celebrate it! Here are some ways we can celebrate our heritage: 1.Exploreanddiscoverourcountry-and while you're at it, visit our heritage sites. Not sure where they are? Visit www.southafrica.infotoplanyourtripfromexperience to experience. 2. Show your true colours and fly our flag - be an ambassador for South Africa and fly our flag in thought, word and deed. After all, marketing South Africa is everyone's business and each and every one of us, through our behaviour, the words we use and the stories we tell, can make a difference in how we see ourselves and how the rest of the world perceives South Africa. Think of our progressive constitution, DesmondTutuandNelsonMandelaasjust a start. 3. Celebrate our successes and share your life story; we have a lot to be proud of - we continue to inspire the world to a new way of doing things, because our unique combinations create refreshing possibilities. 4. Proudly buy South African products and make use of South African services. Thisisnotonlyacelebrationofourheritage but it helps to sustain our economy too. Marmite, boerewors, Mrs Balls Chutney, Ouma's Rusks and biltong - does it get any better than that? Why not host a Heritage Day lunch and serve only South African food? 5. Learn our anthem - We must be the only country to have a national anthem composed in five different languages - and probably the only one whose people don't know the words to all of the verses! Go to www.southafrica.infotolearnthewordsto the entire anthem.

My South Africa is not Europe >> My South Africa is my home PIETER-DIRK UYS

M

Y South Africa officially houses 50 million people of all colours, creeds, religions and genders. If we include the unofficial refugee population from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia and Somalia it might be closer to 65 million for all we know. My South Africa today has a thousand shades of black and the rainbow needs urgent re-inventing. My South Africa is blessed with the gifts of communication. We have 11 official languages. No one can ever say they didn’t know what was going on. Someone will eventually say it in their language. My South Africa has not changed its name with the birth of its democracy, but many of our roads, streets and towns need to reinvent their addresses. How long can we drive down Hendrik Verwoerd Boulevard, John Vorster Avenue or PW Botha Street without throwing up? My South Africa is not Holland where they think they understand Afrikaans and don’t want to be reminded that Verwoerd, the Architect

of Apartheid, was Dutch and not Afrikaans. My South Africa is not the United Kingdom, because happily many of our racist youth have left our rainbow shores to create their own a De la Reystyle Blankostan Homeland in the London suburb of Richmond. My South Africa is not Europe no matter how hard some of us try. Black people were once referred to as “nonEuropeans”, which ironically meant that many Australians and Californians used the toilets meant for blacks. My South Africa is not Australia, even though so many South Africans emigrated to that far-off colony that the average IQ of both our countries went up. My South Africa is not Russia, although most of our ANC Politburo scraped through Moscow University or Leningrad College, and hide their Stalinist bent under frothy liberal chit-chat and gesture politics. My South Africa is not China, but there’s a new China shop opening ev-

ery week on the main streets of our country towns, giving truth to the old rumour that by the end of Robert Mugabe’s 100-year reign, the Chinese will rule the world. My South Africa is not the U.S. Once the Americas inspired us with their Indian Reservation System, on which we then based our apartheid Black Homeland policies. We’ve moved on. They still have them. And

though we also have a Communist Party with plans for the future, and are waiting to give the Castros political asylum in Pretoria if Obama decides to extend Guantanamo Bay. My South Africa is not Israel where they have built an eight-metre-high concrete wall of separation to keep their enemies out, while we created a democracy to try and keep everyone in. But thanks Tel Aviv for the nuclear bombs, our apartheid regime needed to show some muscle against an unfriendly democratic world. My South Africa is not blood-drenched Iraq, which has now imported all our ex-South African police to do security service. We probably have the biggest unofficial army there. You can ask for a “lekker dop” and get it. My South Africa is not Afghanistan, even though we have as many SUVs clogging our roads, not driven by tough soldiers clutching loaded machine guns, but by tipsy politicians, the nouveau noir and anorexic

“MY SOUTH AFRICA IS BLESSED WITH THE GIFTS OF COMMUNICATION. WE HAVE 11 OFFICIAL LANGUAGES. NO ONE CAN EVER SAY THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. SOMEONE WILL EVENTUALLY SAY IT IN THEIR LANGUAGE” now we Afrikaners can proudly claim to be an inspiration for the current American president. We once locked up our political prisoners on Robben Island without trial. Today, Barack Hussein Obama does the same thing on Cuba. My South Africa is not Cuba, al-

mothers with cellphones pressed to their ears. My South Africa is not Zimbabwe. Yet. My South Africa has the greatest Constitution in the world. We have a Bill of Rights. We had an unbelievable Truth Commission. We are inspired by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. And who do the rest of world have? The Kardashians. My South Africa had the greatest incidence of HIV/Aids in the world. We lost 1000 people a day thanks to a government that did nothing for 10 years. Now our Number One leads by example from the shower. My South Africa is exciting, frightening, hot, cold, dry, wet, hilly, flat, crowded, empty, arrogant, friendly, dangerous, gentle, non-racial, racist, wealthy, poor, healthy, sick, hopeful, corrupt, unbearable and addictive. My South Africa has not forgotten the past while looking forward to the future. My South Africa is where no democrat has been before. It is the blueprint for hope where everything once looked hopeless. It is building a future in the faded footprint of despair. MySouthAfricaisa20-year-oldon the edge of adulthood with all the confusions, expectations, demands, fears and fantasies that entails. My South Africa is my home. -News24.

iLEMBE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY ILEMBE –UMASIPALA WESIFUNDA NOTICE OF DROUGHT CONDITIONS Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, the iLembe District Municipality is experiencing a drought and would like the communities of KwaDukuza Local Municipality to assist in ensuring minimal amounts of water are being used. Local municipalities of Ndwedwe and Maphumulo are already at Level 3 of drought due to substantial reduction of Mvotshane river levels. The normal abstraction volumes from the river have always been 6ML/d but have reduced below 3 ML/d. How can residents help? • Stop washing vehicles and driveways • Report leaky faucets and toilets to the District Municipality • Take shorter showers. • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. • Reuse water as much as possible. Which KwaDukuza areas are affected? 1. Ward 1 (Sokesimbone and Sadlokwe), Ward 3 (Nyathikazi) and Ward 25 (Mdlebeni, Kamu, Vulinqgondo and Ohlange) The Municipality is currently able to abstract 600kl/ Day instead of the normal 1000 kl/ day/ from uTugela River which is the source of water for these areas. This is resulting to some areas not receiving water on 24 hour basis with highest areas like Sokesimbone and Sadlokwe. Mdlebeni Township was receiving some of the supply from the Nsimba River which has also dried up. The supply of water in all those areas is augmented through the water tankers. 2.

Darnall and Zamani Township The source of water, the Nonoti River is drying up. Residents urged to conserve water there are very low river levels. If things continue in this fashion, the Darnall Mill may restrict supply to iLembe reservoirs and prioritize their operations.

3.

Blythedale Beach Boreholes are not performing to their best due to the drought condition.

4.

KwaDukuza CBD and surrounds (Gledhow, Kearsney, Stanger Manor, Townview, Lindelani, Shakaville, High Ridge and Warrenton) The source of water from these areas is from Umvoti and it is also affected by the drought. No interruptions have been experienced yet, but they are expected should the drought worsen.

5.

Groutville and Palm Lakes Source of water is Hazelmere Dam. The dam level has dropped from 100% to 56% within a space of three months. If the situation continues, we will not be able to receive any water. Currently the supply from Hazelmere is so low such that it does not allow any buffer in the storage reservoirs. The supply and demand is evenly matched. Any break in the system results to water interruptions.

For more information please contact the iLembe District Municipality Call Centre on 032-4379375/ 9371.

(04/12/1978 – 28/09/2013) No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye. You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows the reason why. Our hearts still ache in sadness, and secret tears still flow For what it meant to lose you, only those who love you know. Remembering you is easy, we do it every day. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. Your memory is a keepsake, from which we’ll never part. You meant so very much to us, words just can’t convey!

OYOTA has invested 85 million euros, engineered1 000newpartsandspent 576 000 man hours refining the new

Yaris. After research conducted across several platforms including press analysis, customer clinics and dealer feedback, Toyota Europe identified three key areas where the current generation Yaris scored highly – outstanding roominess, powertrain efficiency and standard features, making it the smart choice. The narrow upper and large trapezoidal grilles, ahallmarkofToyota’scurrentdesign, are present but they now merge at the point of the Toyota emblem to form a powerful cross shape. Eight exterior colours are available, including new Avante-Garde Bronze Metallic (petrolmodelsonly)andPacificBlueMetallic.LavaRedMetallicandPearlWhiteMetallic are Hybrid exclusive colours. The upper instrument panel has been

made thinner, and the upper surface of the driver’s instrument binnacle has been restyled to give a slimmer appearance. New seat trims are provided, with a new fabric pattern and colours. Befitting its range-topper status, the Hybrid is decked out in a leather and cloth combo. The new Yaris is available with three engine choices – two petrol, and a hybrid. The full hybrid system, a first for this segment, benefits from adjustments which have brought its CO2 emissions down further, from 88 to 82g/km. Extremely fuel efficient (3,6 litres in the combined cycle) and clean (virtually zero NOx and particulate emissions), this innovative powertrain is at the cutting edge of technology. Renowned for its near-silent running, comfort and easy handling, especially around town where the hybrid system allowsthecartobedrivenforcertaindistances in electric mode, or with limited use of the petrol engine. The auto CVT-based transmission adds to the all-round smooth, quiet and comfortable driving experience. Yaris Hybrid’s powertrain features a four-cylinder Atkinson cycle 1,497cc engine that is 50mm shorter than the 1.8-litre unit used by Prius and Auris Hybrid, it is also 17kg lighter. Its features include a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, an electric water pump, a low-friction distribution chain, an intake manifold made of a composite material and a compact exhaust manifold. Dynamic Peugeot 308

THE PEUGEOT 308 and 308 SW have seencommercialsuccesswith146 000 units ordered by the end of August. Following this excellent performance, the 308 range welcomes two dynamic new versions and on both Hatchback and SW body styles. Behind the wheel of these new versions,whethertheGT205orGT180fitted with the 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Start six-speed manual and the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 EAT6 engines respectively, drivers will appreciate the remarkableperformanceofthesevehicles. The 308 GT’s front end now houses the lion in the grille with three horizontal blades on either side of the emblem and LED lighting used throughout. From behind, the 308 GT is striking for its posture as the GT signature is integrated in the grill, the tailgate and the front wheel panels. The range of colours for the 308 GT include the new Magnetic Blue. To deliver maximum enjoyment, the GT makes the most of a chassis with specific settings and high performance engines. Engineers used all of the brand’s expertise to achieve a remarkable power to weight ratio of just

5.85kg/hp for the petrol 308 GT. Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h, takes the petrol 308 GT just 7,5 seconds. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Start engine is specified with a six-speed manual gearbox to make the most of its 285Nm of torque, available between 1 750 and 4 500rpm. This diesel engine is coupled to an EAT6automaticgearbox.ItusesQuickshift technology for fast gear changes, as well as the ability to down-shift automatically to the speed required rather than in sequential order. Furthermore, its efficiency is almostthesameasforamanualgearbox due to reduced internal friction and the useoftorqueconvertersappliedwhenever needed to avoid transmission slip. Performance of this level demands an effective braking system and this is provided by a Bosch 9CE central unit distributing the braking effort between the four discs. At the front, the 330mm diameter and 30mm thick discs are gripped by floating calipers with 60mm pistons. At the rear, the discs are 268mm diameter on 308 GT and 290mm on 308 GT SW. Both engines types have switchable ESP.

Tricky draw for Sunbrook WEEKLY REPORTER FAVOURITES Sunbrook Volleyball Club face a tricky draw in their quest for honours in the Moon and Sons Agencies Knockout Cup (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) which gets underway tomorrow (Thursday) at the association courts at 7pm. Matches will be played in two pools on a league basis with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament. Sunbrook have been drawn alongside nemesis Cool Leaders (who stunned the log leaders in their last league encounter) and arch-rivals Teachers Style (who are noted to feature prominently in knockout competitions) in pool A. Coach-cum-manager of the Sunbrook outfit said: “With the round-robin matches contested over 15 points, there is no room for lethargy and it is important that the lads get off to a winning start in their opening fixture against Cool Leaders”. “A loss in our opening fixture would put immense pressure on the boys in the match against Teachers Style, who are noted to up their tempo against more illustrious opponents,” added Moonsamy. Darnall United are favourites to emerge winners in pool B having drawn alongside Virgo and minnows Manor Old Boys (MOB).

Darnall will be pinning their hopes on setter Duran Moodaly to guide them all the way into the final. Virgo have been blowing hot and cold throughout the season, but should prove too strong for MOB in the hope of securing a semi-final berth against the winner of pool A. The semi’s is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 2 with the final set for 9 October.
