T

HEpeopleofKwaDukuza united on Friday to give their 67 minutes in honour of South African icon and former president Nelson Mandela, for the first time since his death. While tens of thousands of ordinary South Africans gardened, swept streets, read to children, warmed the elderly with blankets and fed poverty stricken families, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and his team decided to literally clean up the community. The mayor together with government workers donned overalls to pick up rubbish at various areas on operation Clean-Up for Madiba, the 2014 theme declared by President Jacob Zuma. The KwaDukuza task team made up of councillors and officials were deployed to various areas to deliver food and blankets to mostly destitute families. Mthembu joined the campaign to applaud the good work done by public servants in celebrating the life and times of the father of the nation. The mayor dedicated his 67 minutes doing good to help the needy. He visited the community of Nyathikazi Crèche in Darnall, nodding approval on a number of community development campaigns done on Mandela Day. Mthembu also went to the local army base on the outskirts ok KwaDukuza where he together with councillor

Competitions Thulani Ntuli and his ward committee built two toilet facilities for the community. “We have joined the world in raising the flag higher in celebrating the life of the martyrtothecauseoffreedomand democracy. It also gives us yet a pleasure to be part of these celebrations. “Public servants are exercising diligence on the way they are serving on the vision inspired by Madiba. “These are some of the ideas espoused by him as a thing that we should all embrace and share,” said the mayor. KwaDukuza Food for Life also cooked and distributed more than 12 000 plates of food to the underprivileged community in KwaDukuza. They provided meals to less fortunate citizens throughout the town. The KwaDukuza Department of Home Affair did their

bit by assisting a family in Lindelani. Office manager Dion Moonsamy, co-ordinator Sandile Cele and official Sibonelo Biyela visited the Ntuli family. Theyprovidedthefamilyof nine with groceries which were bought with generous contributions from the home affairs staff. They also assisted to register one of the children who did not have a birth certificate. The team thereafter took the mother Thulisile Ntuli to SASSA and assisted her with grant applications for herself, as she is physically disabled, and her children. With assistance from the youth in the community they also cleaned the family’s home. AirAfricaEngineeringalso donated a brand new refridgeratortothefamilyastheirold one no longer works.

Residents demand police action >> KwaDukuza SAPS took more than six hours to answer phone MERVYN KRISHNA

“T

HE KwaDukuza SAPS must close down, or employ someone who is competent to run the station.” These are the words of a frustrated victim of crime in KwaDukuza. Following a series of articles regarding criminal activities in KwaDukuza, the Weekly has been inundated with calls from residents saying that they are about to take matters into their own hands if the police do not intervene. This comes after several breakins, burglaries and hijackings which have been spiralling out of control in the area and the KwaDukuza SAPS having no system in place to prevent or combat these criminal activities. Local resident Sabitha Harrypersad of Bux’s Building in King Shaka Street, whose vehicle was broken into

for the second time in the early hours of Tuesday morning said the KwaDukuza SAPS must close down or the station commander must be replaced. “It is blatant, everyone can see that. Last week when my vehicle was broken into, I contacted the KwaDukuza SAPS from 1:30am. They did not answertheirphones.Alltheresidents residing in the flat also tried to contact thepolice, butthephonesjustrangfor hours. “I then contacted K9 Security who responded swiftly. They also tried to contacttheSAPStonoavail. However, I kept on trying until after 8am, when an officer finally answered the phone,” said Harrypersad. The angry victim said: “I really don’t know for how long we are going to put up with shoddy and incompetent people at the station.” This, however, is just one of the

many crime-related incidents that have residents hot under the collar. According to a seasoned police officer at KwaDukuza, who asked to remain anonymous, crime in KwaDukuzaisgettingoutofhandandthestation commander has failed the community of KwaDukuza. “She does not have a plan of action and has no skills to run such a big station.” Another outraged resident, who was hijacked and robbed twice, Anton Naidoo said the time when residents plan to take the law into their own hands is approaching rapidly. “The KwaDukuza SAPS has failed us. It is glaring, the station commander cannot run the station, and you do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. The residents need to take actiontoprotecttheirfamilyandtheir possessions.” Another victim of crime Vusi

The window of Sabitha Harrypersad’s vehicle was smashed by criminals. Mthembu said the local private security companies are doing a far better job than the SAPS. “Every night before we sleep, we pray to God to guard us one more nightandwearethankfulthatwemay live to see another day.” Another resident who was hijacked and robbed, Henry Naicker said theANCregionalcommitteeheld

THE aroma of rich coffee wafted through Hirsch’s Ballito on Wednesday when they hosted a coffee lover’s morning in conjunction with local roastery Beanstruk,. The topic at hand was all about

how to produce the best cup of coffee. Michelle Hendrikz from Beanstruk gave a thorough run down on thefinerpointsofcoffee, includingthe importanceofknowingthe difference between Arabica and Robusta coffee. “Arabicaisgrownatahighaltitude and is far superior to Robusta,” she pointed out. “Different countries produce different varieties of coffee.” She said Colombia’s coffee, for instance, is rich, whereas coffee produced in Costa Rica is a lot milder.

Shakashead community march against crime

MERVYN KRISHNA MORE than 500 community members from the Shakashead area, brought the streets to a standstill on Saturday with a march against crime. The event was hosted by Eagle Worship Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Chris Sheriff. The marchers included members of Eagle Worship Ministries, community members, Umhlali SAPS, ward councillorJethroBanda,KwaDukuza

Municipality chief whip Dumisani Ndimande and pastor Nel Sewraj. They marched in solidarity to demonstrate their support in the fight against women abuse and rape. The protesters held-up placards that portrayed their growing concernsoverthecrimesintheircommunities. Sheriff said because of the nationwide outcry, various churches were marching in solidarity with the community against crime. “This means churches are also

taking a stand against the social ills faced by the community, because we are also part of the community. The initiative belonged to everyone, irrespective of their denomination. “One more rape, violent act and death to a woman or child is too much and we are all here for one purpose, to fight this evil in our communities,” said Sheriff. Banda said it was about time that communities and churches took a stand to say “no more”. “We are sick and tired of the drug

and alcohol abuse and the rape of women and children.” A community member, who joined the march, said she and her family lived in constant fear of her 17-yearold son who was a “whoonga” addict. Addressing the crowd Ndimande said drug abuse was the root of most of the crimes in the communities. “We have to let churches, communities, schools and non-governmental organisations take their stand in fighting crime,” he said.

Drawing on his background in computer languages, artificial intelligence, computer security, quantum mechanics and medical science, Maharaja expertly shows how modern thinkers are striving for a perfect understanding of reality, and that this perfect conception is found fully in the Vedic scriptures of India. The scientific method strives towards perfection, whereas the Vedic methodoriginatesin the perfection of spirit. Maharaja explains how even the most ground-breaking thinking of modern science, is but an imperfect version of the full-fledged conception of the essential nature of reality, which was fully understood and revealed by the ancient Aryan sages. infamously known as the “God Particle”. Hints of the particle were found by scientists us ing the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in Geneva in July 2012. The LHC is currently the largest scientific instru ment in the world, having a circumference of 27 kil ometres and spanning three countries (the SKA will dethrone the LHC with 2000 satellite dishes in Africa and another 1000 in Australia when it is completed in 2024). The existence of this particle means there is a “Higgs field”, which is thought to give mass to other particles, if the standard model holds true. In March, this publication reported on the Bicep2 results from a telescope placed on the South Pole which claimed they had indirectly detected gravitational waves, which are the ripples in space consistent with the idea that the uni verse expanded rapidly very shortly after the “Big Bang”. Together these two discoveries seem to suggest that the universe should not exist — that the cosmos should have collapsed on itself almost immediately after the Big Bang. This obviously isn’t true, or I would not be sitting here watching television while try

O kick off Mandela Week I thought I should give a joyful account of why you and everyone you know (and the rest of the cos mos) should not exist. Hopefully by the end of this column you will have decided if you exist by the grace of God or if you are nothing but a happy accident. We gather our perception of the universe from “the standard model”, which predicted something called the Higgs Boson,

ing to type. It must be said however, that the scientists who conducted the Bicep2 experiment admit that they may not have, in fact, detected gravi tational waves — the ripples from the cosmic inflation — instead they may have detected space dust from our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Stuff happens, that’s science for you. So, something is not right here. Obviously there are other physics we are yet to understand at play. Maybe it has something to do with dark matter, maybe not. At this point we can only speculate and avoid what I just did, using dark matter — a force we barely understand — to try to account for a result that should not be. This is what science is all about, what excites most scientists — and science journalists alike — the ad vent of what is to be known and what new mystery could be born out of new discoveries. Paraphrasing Nelson Mandela, when one reaches the top of a hill, one finds that there are many more to be climbed. That is basically the path of scientific discovery. Also, when one reaches that crest of discovery, one may find that when looking back there are potholes left behind, gaps in the knowledge of what we already know. Happy knowledge hunting.

Middle ear infections in children >> Most middle ear infections occur when an infection such as a cold causes mucus to build up in the middle ear

O

TITIS media is an infection of the middle ear that is particularly common in young chil-

dren. Although anyone can develop a middle-earinfection,75%ofcasesoccur in children under 10. Infants be-

tween six and 15 months are most commonly affected. It's estimated thataroundoneineveryfourchildren will have had at least one middle-ear infection by the time they are 10. What causes middle-ear infections? The middle ear is located directly behind the eardrum. It contains three tiny bones that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the hearing organ in the inner ear. Most middle ear infections occur when a viral or bacterial infection such as a cold causes mucus to build up in the middle ear, which then becomes infected. Younger children are particularly vulnerable to this type of infection because the tube that allows fresh air into the middle ear (the Eustachian tube)issmallerthanitisinadults, and hence, increases the risk of developing middle ear infections.

ter two or three days, they seem to be in a lot of pain, or you notice a dischargeofpusorfluid/bloodfromtheir ear/s. You should also contact your doctor if your child has an underlying health condition, such as cystic fibrosis or congenital heart disease, which could make them more vulnerable to complications.

When to seek medical advice Most cases of otitis media pass within a few days, so there's usually no need to see your doctor. However, you should take yourchildtosee a doctor if your child’s symptoms show no sign of improvement af-

How are middle-ear-infections treated? Most ear infections clear up within three to five days and don't need any specific treatment. If necessary, medication should be used to relieve pain and a high temperature. Antibiotics are not routinely used to treat middle ear infections, although they may occasionally be prescribed if symptoms persist or are particularly severe. This will be determined by your doctor, after assessing your child. Can middle-ear infections be prevented?

It's not possible to prevent middle ear infections, but there are some things you can do that may reduce your child's risk of developing the condition. These include: make sure your child is up-to-date with their routine vaccinations – particularly the pneumococcal vaccine and the DTaP/IPV/Hib (5in-1) vaccine; avoid exposing your child to smoky environments (passive smoking); don't give your child a dummy once they are older than six to 12 months; don't feed your child while they are lying flat on their back; and if possible, feed your baby with breast milk rather than formula milk. Avoiding contact with other childrenwhoareunwellmayalsohelpreduce your child's chances of catching an infection that could lead to a middle ear infection. Complications from middle-ear infection Complications of middle ear infections are fairly rare, but can be serious if they do occur. Most complications are the result of the infection spreading to another part of the ear, including the bones behind the ear (mastoiditis), the inner ear (labyrinthitis), or the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). If complications do develop, these often need to be treated immediately with antibiotics in hospital.

Many young adults misinformed about hookahs HOOKAH smoking, as with any other type of smok ing, is harmful to health, something most young adults fail to realise a new study reveals. Hookah smoking can be just as dangerous as ciga rettes, according to the US Centres for Disease Con trol and Prevention. However, this study found that many young adults believe the water pipes are a safe alternative to cigarettes. Smoke filtered through water Researchers asked patrons, aged 18 to 30, at three Southern California hookah lounges if they thought that hookah use could be harmful. More than half said they did not believe that it would harm their health. When asked why they believed hookahs were not a health threat, 47 percent said they thought the smoke gets filtered through the water. More than onethirdthoughtthefruitusedtoflavourthetobac co detoxifies harmful chemicals, and 16 percent said the tobacco used in hookahs doesn't contain nico tine and isn't addictive. None of those beliefs is true, said the authors of the study in the July/August issue of the journal Nursing Research. KSST clinch Ralph memorial KO Cup

>> Club ecstatic with victory as they celebrate their fifth successive win WEEKLY REPORTER

K

SST Volleyball Club clinched the Ralph Reuben memorial Knockout Cup after beating Randsons in straight sets (2-0) in the final played before a large crowd at the association courts on Thursday night. ThecharismaticReuben wastragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2010 and his family decided to perpetuate his memory by hosting a tournament each year. KSST won the inaugural tournament way back in 2010 and on Thursday night notched up their fifth successive victory in a trot to keep the coveted Ralph Reuben memorial

floating trophy proudly displayed in their silverware cabinet. KSST hardly moved out of the first gear in their fluent 25-18 win in the opening set with Sherwin Daniels, Kyle Puckree and Albiston Jaram scoring points with ease. After a lethargic start, Randsons came alive at thestartofthesecondsetandputtheir hands up in contention for honours. With the scores locked at 8-8, Randsonstookthelead(14-10)forthe first time in the match after a stellar performance by Neeraj Bageloo and Mohamed “Toffee” Cassim. But, successive blocks by the lanky Immilio Pillay, saw Randsons 4-point cushion reduced to two points (14-12). Randsons stalwart Ahmed Essack enjoyed a flurry of winners to give

Randsons a commanding 18-13 lead. The Randsons faithfuls were shocked after setter Gavin Govender was replaced with Nevlin Moodley despite enjoying a comfortable 19-15 lead. KSST quickly capitalised on the inexperience of the youthful Moodley and reduced the deficit to 2-points (19-21) before Govender was reintroduced into the fray. The huge crowd was privy to some entertaining volleyball characterised bylongralliesasbothteamssprawled their bodies all over the courts to retrieve the ball. KSST came back strongly at the death to level the scores at 21-21. Randsons forged ahead 23-21 after a superb winner by Sandhir “Tinboy” Jugmohan and an unforced error by Puckree. With just 2 points needed to seal victory in the second set and level the scores at 1-1, Govender committed thecardinalsinofservingtheballoutside. KSST seized the lifeline with both hands before the scores were locked at 24-24. Singh put KSST ahead (27-26) with a bazooka down the line before man-of-the-match Daniels sealed the winner (28-26) with a deft touch that left the Randsons rearguard flatfooted.
