King Goodwill Zwelithini: Our culture is exploited MERVYN KRISHNA KING Goodwill Zwelithini attacked KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and business "jackals" for neglecting the Zulu kingdom while “using its name to make a profit”. Zwelithini was speaking at the provincial King Shaka and Heritage Day celebration on Wednesday at the Stanger Country Club Grounds. “I have to say this: it is not a secret, a large majority of the people who do notwishuswell, exploitandprofitfrom our culture,” he said. He cited the phrase "Welcome to the Zulu Kingdom" widely used by the tourism sector saying it did not benefit Zulus. “Tourism organisations are always urging people to come to the Reed Dance and to come to the Zulu Kingdom. But, if you were to ask yourself if they ever met with me or had come to our ceremonies, you will be shocked.” Zwelithini believes that ludicrous amounts of money were spent on failed events while he “had to go on his knees” to get funding for traditional ceremonies that would benefit the Zulus. During this year's Reed Dance, he said, maidens were forced to sleep in tents. Zwelithini said that Heritage Day, which was known as Shaka's Day until 1995, is also referred to as Braai Day and this is an insult to King Shaka. "Braai Day reduced the significance of Heritage Day,” said Zwelithini. "Even though the name has been changed, this day will always remain Shaka's Day, which is very important to [Zulus] as compared to Braai Day," he added. He said the commemoration of Shaka’s death is an emotional for all Zulus. KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, who was also at the event, in his address said by combining the two events they have created the opportunity for the

“people of this province to celebrate our diverse cultures as proud children of a united South Africa”. "Mostimportantly, wearecelebrating the contribution of the people of KwaZulu-Natal from all races towards socio-economic development. “By all accounts, this province has achieved racial harmony and prosperity through collective efforts by all its residents.” “The introduction of the English, Portuguese, Dutch, French and other European cultures as the colonialists landedinNatal, signaledthebeginning of the formation of the Rainbow Nation as we know it today. “In addition, the introduction of the westerninfluencebroughtinChristianity, while the arrival of Indian indentured labourers introduced the Hindu, Islamicandotherfaithsfromtheeast," said the Premier. Mchunu said that similarly, the Jewish and many other communities have enriched the spectrum of faiths and religions in this province. "Some of these faiths, the Western faiths in particular and their teachings, have influenced our indigenous, traditional religions and belief systems, giving rise to a plethora of new religious groupings which now fall under the allencompassing title of "African Christian religions,” he said. “Indeed, we have been a shining example to the world. In the new democratic order we ushered in 1994, rejecting the notion of groups with specific allocations of special and exclusive rights and resources. “We have created an egalitarian society where values identified in the country's constitution are enjoyed by all,” he said. Mchunu told Zwelithini that his support is much-needed in developing the province. He said: "Your Majesty, as we seek to move into the future as ‘one people, one nation’, you remain our source of inspiration. We believe that with your support, this province will continue to edge towards a brighter and prosperous future."

The extensive damage to one of the homes caused by a gas cylinder explosion.

MERVYN KRISHNA

“It is shocking that no one was injured.” Tarzan Naicker from the KwaDukuza disaster management team said: “I am sure there are many other people who are currently storing gas cylinders in their homes. “This incident has illustrated theamountofdamagethatcanbe caused, not to mention the risk to life, when something goes wrong,” he said. “Gas cylinders should be stored outdoors, ideally in a caged area, away from anything that could start or spread fire,” added Naicker.

TWO Glenhills homes were extensively damaged after a gas cylinder exploded on Wednesday afternoon. The LPG cylinder was torn apart and landed several metres away. The force of the blast caused the walls of the building to move approximately two centimetres. A resident of one of the damaged houses, D. Naidoo, said: "There was such a loud explosion. All the doors flew open - it blew the front door in and damaged the roof.

Water shortages hit >> Restrictions implemented for the second time this year JYOTHI LALDAS AND SHANNON HOPKINS

B

ELOW average rainfall in the past 15 months has resulted in water restrictions being implemented on the North Coast. Dam levels have fallen sharply, causing water shortages to already occur in some areas in iLembe. Service provider Siza Water announced last week that all their service areas - from Zimbali through to Tinley Manor, Shakaskraal, Etete and Nkobongo - would be under water restrictions. This after restrictions were put in place in February for a period. Readings show the Hazelmere

catchment, the source of water supply, is under pressure. On 11 September 2013 the supply was at 98%, but dropped to 56% by 10 September 2014. “ The use of hosepipes, washing of driveways, roofs and vehicles as well as the use of irrigation systems is banned, until further notice,” said a Siza Water notice. Consumers who do not comply will be liable for a fine of R3000. Restrictions will remain in place until the public is otherwise informed. proaching summer months. This is according to Shami Harichunder, the corporate stakeholder manager at Umgeni Water, the service provider for most areas in the iLembe District. According to Harichunder, high temperatures cause increased evaporation. “This possible scenario will be exacerbated if the El Nino effect occurs, as is expected, by resulting in below average rainfall. El Nino is a weather phenomenon that occurs irregularly, usually once in every three to seven years. “It leaves in its trail low rainfall in some parts of the world, drought in some countries and floods in

many other parts of the globe.” Harichunder said operational meteorologists in South Africa have predicted that the trend of low rainfall experienced thus far is likely to continue until January 2015 through the spring and early summer months when the highest rainfall usually occurs - in KwaZulu-Natal, in general, and in the Umgeni Water catchment areas, in particular. “This will have the effect of inadequate raw water being available for Umgeni Water to treat and supply to its customers - one of which is iLembe - for reticulation to domestic, business and industrial users.” In a state of stress is the North

Coast system (Hazelmere and Imvutshane River). “The North Coast System (Hazelmere), which supplies parts of Durban and the iLembe District, also faces the possibility of drought. “The Umvutshane River, which supplies Maphumulo, is almost completely dry. “This has resulted in 66% reduction in the volume of water that is being treated.” An earnest appeal is being made toconsumerstousewatersparingly. It is believed that if water conservation measures are implemented now, there may be sufficient water available to meet future needs. View the full list of waterrestrictions and to download necessary forms at www.sembcorp-sizawater.co.za.Customerscanregister for alerts from Siza. Where logic and reason fail Sibusiso Biyela

@astrosibs SIBUSISO BIYELA

I

AM a self-proclaimed advocate of science, but as I have learnt over the years, mine is a stupid venture. Science is a body of knowledge that is applied by people we call scientists to understand the physical world using experimentation and reasoning to come to conclusions. It is also very important that advocates ofscience, suchasmyself, driveintheirown

lanesandrealisethatsciencecannotsolve, know, or understand everything. This is a very humbling fact, one that needs to be accepted as is, on account of the existence of opinions and the growing tendency to let logic and reason take a backseat in a world ruled by counterknowledge. Now, I have been told, and have subsequentlyreadmanyaliteratureontheinternet, telling me that there are some things that science cannot know and can never explain. That statement can seem very flatworldly, but such an analysis would be unfair to the advocate of the supernatural. How can we differentiate between established facts and counter-knowledge? Well, the western world has come up with a few useful tools for the physical world: experimentation and Ockham’s razor sums up most of these tools. When researchers are faced with a natural phenomenon that is not yet under-

of rules outside the realms of science. And out there, pretty much anything goes. This reminds me of the old slogan of The Church of Scientology: “if it’s a fact for you, it’s a fact.” Let us consider a man of God who claims that the Holy Spirit resides within him. This is a fact that cannot be tested, and therefore resides outside science. If, however, the ambitious man of God claims that he can use the Holy Spirit to heal the injured, cure AIDS and cancer through prayer, he then brings aspects of thesupernaturalworldtoourphysicalreality, and at this point allows scientific testing of these claims. No occurrence of faith healing working has been recorded or peer-reviewed. A more physically viable explanation would be that he who claims to be healed by a faith healer through nothing more than prayer, is telling an untruth.

stood, they use experimentation to determine the mechanism driving the phenomenon. Where experimentation fails or not is possible (such as a historical event), it is useful to ‘cut the crap’. This is where Ockham’s razor comes in; it looks at the many explanations presented and cutting the bull@#t, settles for the simplest one. In other words, where there is a perfectly natural explanation for a phenomenon, the supernatural is frowned upon –that is until testable and reliable evidence supports it. It is important that the most established theories of nature encounter the most rigorous and revealing episodes of scientists trying to prove it wrong. The most accepted are only so because they withstand the plethora of attempts to disprove them. Such is for the physical world, though, whilst the supernatural has a different set

we parted ways on our usual frosty terms. Mynextmovewastousesomeofmylast remainingdatatotaketoWhatsappandFacebook and find out what my posse were planning for the weekend. Itpaystohavefriendswealthierandbetter connected than oneself, and this bout of messaging scored me a free ticket to Friday night’s local rendition of “Whose Line is it Anyway”, which has been aptly renamed “What Kind”, for its Durban audience. As a thank you to my friends over at the Catalina, I must pause here to tell you that the place is awesome. Before you begin your next tirade about how boring Durban is and how the city is a cultural vacuum, check out the Catalina’s offering online at catalinatheatre.com. The “What Kind” show, held once a month, is produced by local independent producer, Sandy Bigara, who, in my opinion, is as awesome at directing as she is at sporting pink hair. The show is held in the Catalina’s trademark late-night slot, starting at 10pm, on the last Friday of every month.

PEOPLE often ask others what they would do with their last day on earth. The answer is typically something thoroughly un-thought-out, like spending the time in Paris. If the pre-warned were to stop and consider their answer more carefully, they would realise the unpleasantness of spending 19 of their last 24 hours in airports, and squashednexttothatobligatoryobeseman with halitosis who seems to be on every aircraft I have ever boarded. Last weekend, I was faced with a different question, albeit one just as difficult. Being at the tail end of my first month of being paid on the last day of the month, rather than the 25th, my purse strings are shorter than ever, and frayed to the point of decay. So, armed with my R4.33, I debated how to spend my weekend and what to do with these last few hard-earned cents. I put in a call to my bank manager to seek his advice, but he merely laughed and reminded me of the prudence of frugal living. I told him it was a little late for that, and

Whilst this may break the credibility of the witness, it keeps intact the laws of physics by cutting the crap, in other words, we use Ockham’s razor. Whilst this fact means faith healing does not work in the physical world, it says nothingofthesupernatural, whichasIsaid earlier, anything goes. Thisplacewhereanythinggoesiscalled by Collin Campbell the cultic milieu; which is the cesspool of all that is unbelievable and where those that forego reason, logic and choose to ignore all manner of established evidence, reside. I have been told also, that miracles cannot be explained by science because they operate outside the laws of physics. This is a face-palm-worthy statement at face value, but then I remember how science cannot explain “everything.” When it comes to so-called miracles and the hocus pocus that plagues the cultic milieu, the phenomena of this supernatural world are only as strong as those who believe in it, the advocates. Andthisiswherescience(whichencapsulates logic and reason), differs: it works whether you believe in it or not. So, what do you believe in?

>> Volunteers get their hands dirty and clean North Coast waterways MERVYN KRISHNA

D

ESPITEthegloomyweatheronSaturday morning, more than 600 volunteers donned their slickers, rain ponchos and trash bags to clean the stretch between Tugela North Bank and the Umvoti River Mouth beaches and waterways. The team picked up marine litter at several designated clean up sites. The Coastal Clean up is part of the International Coastal Clean up - the world's largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. Almost two tons of trash, including cans, bottles and plastic were picked up on the North Coast sites. The clean up is organised by the KZN Ezemvelo which was sponsored by DCLM. The International Coastal Clean up saw

hundreds of thousands of people across the world spend three hours combing the beaches and waterways to pick up trash that pollutes the waters, harms marine life, hampers tourism and poses health risks to beach-goers. Atlastyear'sInternationalCoastalClean up, more than 500 000 volunteers worldwide removed more than 10 million pounds of debris from the ocean, rivers, lakes and waterways. "The purpose of the Blythedale Coastal Clean up is to educate people on the importance of keeping our communities and waterways clean to help protect wildlife from litter that can choke animals or damage habitats," said a spokesperson for DCLM. The mission of the International Coastal Cleanupistoremovedebrisfromshorelines,

bayous, bays, rivers, waterways and beaches, collect valuable information on the amount and types of debris collected, educate people on the issue of marine debris and use the data collected to effect positive change. Volunteers clean beaches and collect information using the International Coastal Cleanupdatacard, sothatsourcesofmarine debris can be targeted for education or pollution prevention campaigns. Co-ordinators enter that information into Ocean Conservancy's online database and that information is tabulated and a report of the results is distributed worldwide. Over the years, data from the clean ups has been used to enact local, state, national, and even international legislation and agreements.

>> Estate manager re-establishes grasslands - which are now rare country wide SHANNON HOPKINS

A

Simbithi environmental manager Peter Coulon points to the patch of Red Gass he is working on establishing in the estate.

A stretch of grassland that is being re-established. The land was perviously rife with prolific grass panicum deustem and tick berry.

NORTH COAST eco estate environmental manager, Peter Coulon, is hard at work re-establishing grasslands in the area. Grasslands are now considered under threat of disappearance in South Africa. This was highlighted at a talk by Professor Eugene Moll at Simbithi recently (reported in Ballito Fever 12 September edition). Coulon, who has worked at Simbithi since earlier this year, has been focussing on restoring natural grassland on the estate. Most of Simbithi was formerly part of a sugar cane farm. Sugar cane now takes up most of what was once coastal grassland a few hundred years ago. The only naturally occurring grasslands remaining on the North Coast are around Nonoti, Tugela and the Amathikulu Nature Reserve, experts say. “Grasslands are hugely undervalued by society, being not as attractive as forests. They do have their own beauty though. We aim to be a benchmarkhereforcoastalgrasslands,”Coulonexplained. He is currently working on about 50 hectares of grassland in Simbithi, and says it is a long-term project. “Creatures that frequent the woodlands would not inhabit grasslands and vice versa, thus we stand to lose certain species if we do not look after our remaining grasslands. “Unlike forests, that mostly ‘do their own thing’, grasslands have to be carefully managed,” said. He said environmentalists are currently doing much research on the subject, as little is known about some aspects of grasslands and the role they play. Vital to creating healthy grasslands are mowing and grazing by animals. “We are currently working on getting support from the local fire department to allow us to burn, which is crucial to keeping grasslands healthy. We are also mowing and taking out grasses and plants that have established themselves in excess,” said Coulon. “In 2015 we are hoping to conduct some trail burns in our grasslands if we get support from the local fire department to allow us to burn, which is crucial to keeping grasslands healthy. “We are also mowing and removing some invasive local grasses like panicum deustem, that have established themselves in excess,” said Coulon. Excess tick berry - which is crowding grasslands - is also being removed. One of his key areas of focus is establishing Red Grass (Themeda triandra), which is a fine grassforthegrazingofanimals.Theestatehas a number of buck which would benefit from this - including different duiker species, reedbuck and bushbuck. “The project is long term. Establishing portion by portion is easier to control,” said Coulon. Coulon has a Btech in nature conservation and has worked in reserves and establishments in KZN for the past 30 years. He has worked for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Natal Parks Board and Msinsi Holdings, and in a number of reserves such as Ndumo and Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

The Entrepreneur's Deloitte business challenge THE Entrepreneur of the Year competition participants enjoyed a new challenge to the initiative recently. The event was an added feature and benefit of this year's iLembe Chamber's Entrepreneur Programme. The challenge was held to encourage business problem solving, team

cohesion, competitiveness and creativity, especially in a group context. Firm Deloitte agreed to get involved. Ironically the team called "The A team" won. They received R3000, to be donated to the small business development/entrepreneurship programme at a school of their choice. A R500

prize also went to each member of the winning group. “We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the presentations. Given the commitment the entrepreneurs have already put in - this year's entrepreneur programme was five months long - and the amount of information they have been assimilating, such a standard was remarkable,”saidiLembeChamber’sNobuhle Funda, who is running the competition. The final will be held this week.

Pupils get new shoes >> 800 pairs of shoes for the needy

FEVER REPORTER LOTUS FM in partnership with Breakthrough Centre distributed about 800 pairs of school shoes to needy children from Etete and surroundingareasonFriday,26September. The "Midday Spice" show which aired between 12pm to 3pm broadcasted live from Breakthrough Centre. Pastor Trevor was interviewed about the history of Breakthrough Centre and it's leading role that it is taking in social transformation. Jessica Nair was asked to speak aboutBreakthroughCentreAcademy and how the high standard of education they are producing is impacting society. She was also interviewed about her new book, 'I can read', whichis being usedaspartofthecurriculum at the academy. Principals from the local schools

(Tinley Manor Primary and Radha Roopsingh Primary), Mr Majozi and Mr Zuma, and their pupils, were interviewed. They expressed their overwhelming joy and gratitude in Lotus FM's venture. One of the principals spoke about how siblings would share a pair of shoes, where one sibling would wear the shoes on one day while the other stayed at home and then they would alternate. These are things that some of us take for granted, but it made us realise the plight of some of our children. It was heartwarming to see learners and parents wait expectantly for an autograph from Lotus FM's Varshan Sookhun. Thompson added that owing to the rapidly growing areas around Mandeni, this development will satisfy the needs of the local consumer by offering a development of a first-world nature. Taking the new Ford Mustang from sketch to production >> The design of the 2015 Mustang is all-new yet unmistakably Mustang

F

OR a car designer, the chance to reimagine an icon like Ford Mustang is always exciting. Doing this for the famous Ford performance car’s 50th anniversary, is the opportunity of a lifetime. As Ford’s performance leader, the basic parameters of Mustang were obvious: rearwheel drive combined with the sound and performance of a V8 engine to create the visceral experience that Mustang drivers expect. Part of the appeal of Mustang over the years has been the way it combines style, performance and everyday usability thanks to its four-seat cabin and sizable trunk. These attributes had to be part of the new design. With these basic parameters,Forddesignersestablished a footprint to work with roughly the same as the fifth generation model. From a design standpoint, the challengewashowtodesignacarthat wascontemporary, butunmistakably

s hark-front nose, fastback profile and rear tri-bar tail lamps were reinterpreted in dozens of different ways. Similarly, sketches of the interior featured the distinctive symmetrical instrument panel with a double brow design and large analogue gauges. Throughout 2011, hundreds of initial sketches were narrowed down to

a handful of proposals that would be transformed into an initial batch of clay models for evaluation in three dimensions. After further development, threethemeswentintothefinal selection phase in early 2012. By the summer of 2012 as with all previous generations - the main Dearborn, Michigan, studio took the lead on developing the Mustang into a production car. Designers, clay sculptors and digital modellers spent countless hours refining the lines and surfaces tha t create the three dimensional body side and the powerful hunches as well as the long-sculpted hoodwithaforwardleaningnosethat give the 2015 Mustang its unique look and personality. Details such as the shape and size of the grille and headlamps were refined and the rear track was widened by 70 millimetres, giving the new car an even more aggressive stance. The elimination of the front and

rear bumper shelves and the use of unified side glass with the B-pillar hidden behind the rear quarter windowscontributetothenewMustang’s more contemporary shape. On the interior, the team paid close attention to the relationships of the various elements, and designed them in a way to achieve optimum fit and finish. The final theme was inspired by the wing of an airplane, with the doublebrowcarvedoutofthewing.Allthe gauges, registers, toggleswitchesand other design elements are placed into thewing.Everythingiswhereitneeds to be for usability, just like the cockpit of an airplane. The toggle switches are a highlight of the modern centre stack. The designers have also taken advantage of modern lighting technology at both ends of the car. Indirect LEDs illuminate the blade style tribar tail lamps with a uniform glow. LEDs are also used for the three gills mounted inboard of the high-intensity discharge headlamps, recalling the gills moulded into the headlamp buckets of the original 1965 Mustang. Along the way, the shape of the new Mustang underwent twice as much aerodynamic testing as any previous generation. The final production design of the all-new sixth-generation Ford Mustang was revealed to the world on 5 December 2013 and it will go on sale in the US later this year. This is also the first generation of the Mustang that will be sold across the world, including South Africa, Australia, and the UK. The all-new Mustang, with V8 and EcoBoost® engines will go on sale in South Africa late 2015.

The new Toyota SUV.

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

TOYOTA has released images of a stunning concept car that provides the first hint of a type of vehicle the company would like to bring to the small SUV market. The radical Toyota C-HR concept, which will have its world premiere next week at the Paris Motor Show, presents a bold new dynamic design language. The striking blue C-HR concept introduces an expressive new “diamond architecture” stylingthemetothesegmentandfeaturesahybrid powertrain. Below its compact, sensual cabin profile, the lower bodywork has been sculpted to represent the faceted surfaces of a highly-durable, precision-cut gemstone. The front view debuts new styling themes that hint at a future design direction for Toyota vehicles - a further development of the company’s “under priority” and “keen look” design identity. From the side, the highly-faceted lower body, aggressively angular rear shoulders and muscular wheel arches are contrasted with an exceptionally sleek cabin profile. Highly-distinctive, aero-inspired, floating rear light clusters further enhance the broad shoulders of the concept car’s lower bodywork.

Style slumped to a 15-9 defeat against log leaders Sunbrook in the opening set. They came back strongly in the second set to take a commanding 7-3 lead, but too many unforced errors resulted in their 13-15 demise. With Sunbrook easily accounting for Cool Leaders in straight sets (2-0) there was immense pressure on Nazir Khan’s Style outfit, who needed to win their match against Cool Leaders in the hope of securing a place in the semi-finals. Style’s woes continued after going down 8-15 to Cool Leaders in the first set. They fought back to level the scores at 1-1 after winning the second set narrowly (16-14). Style were sent crashing out of the tournament after suffering a 13-15 defeat at the hands of rookies, Cool Leaders. Meanwhile, Darnall United clawed their way from a set down to beat Virgo 2-1 before beating MOB (2-1) to secure pole position in pool B. HIS CONVICTIONS -The best things in life are free. -Time is too short for bickering, jealousy, hatred and selfish clamour for recognition. -Don’t take the world to bed. It will destroy you. -Love is the essence of life and living, an allpervading religion. Thank you to the doctors and staff of Victoria Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during our difficult time. Thank you to the staff of the Stanger Hospice for their tremendous support and home visits. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all family members and friends for their words of encouragement and floral arrangements during our time of bereavement.

Manor snatch thrilling four-wickets victory >> Arch rivals vanquished in exhilarating 4-wicket victory

WEEKLY REPORTER

ANOR Cricket Club snatched a thrilling 4-wickets victory against arch-rivals Dawnheights in an Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 League game at the Country Club Ground on Saturday. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat. They posted 171/3 in their allotted 20-overs. Cricket pundits expected them to get closer to the 200-mark after being 113/2 in the 12th over (with 8 overs remaining and 8 wickets intact). Debutante Sagar Arora of India proved his mettle with the bat top scoring with a superb 71 runs, which

included thirteen 4’s and a 6. He received support from Taqeer Malik (35) and Suhail Singh (38). SaieshanLogenathan(1/22from3 overs) was the most economical Manor bowler.Chasing 172-runs for victory (at a rate of 8,6 runs per over) and with light deteriorating the odds were stacked against Manor. But, the experienced Alveiro Nadasen showed scant respect for the Dawnheights attack, smashing a brilliant half-century (58) from 25 balls to set the platform for the Manor lads. Manor lost three wickets, Jacob Stevens (11), Mohamed Mhlongo (11) and Dillon Rautenbach (7). After a dream start of 83/1, Manor slipped to

110/4 in the 12th over. Desigan Pillay and Junaid Amra steadied the Manor innings, taking the tally 148/5 in the 17th over before Amra (11) was run out. Zakarriya “SloMo” Cassimjee was sent for an early shower after scoring a solitary. Despite wickets falling around him, man-of-the-match Pillay held his nerve carving out an unbeaten 33 runs to take the tally to 163/6 with six balls remaining. Needing nine runs to win from six balls, the match was precariously poised on a knife-edge. Dawnheights entrusted Adhil Mohan to bowl the last over. His first delivery was a wide and Radeshar Singh smashed the first legitimate delivery

ofthefinalovertotheboundary for four runs (Manor needed four runs off 5 balls). Mohan’s second delivery was a dot ball (much to the relief of the legion of Dawnheights fans). Singh and Pillay took a cheeky single off the next delivery. Manor needed threerunsfromthreeballs.Pillay became an instant hero when he sent the next delivery to the covers for a four to guide Manor to victory with two balls to spare. Pillay took his tally to 37 runs , including four 4’s and a huge 6. Mags Iyer was the pick of the Dawnheights bowlers claiming 3/18 from 4 overs.
