Shootout at taxi rank

>> Police deployed at taxi rank after gunfire exchange

MERVYN KRISHNA

P

OLICE have been deployed to the KwaDukuza Taxi Rank after five people were injured at a shoot-out between security guards of rival taxi associations last Wednesday. The injured were passengers in a stationary Toyota Quantum when unknown gunmen opened fire. According to witnesses, the floor of the taxi was covered in blood, the front tyres were flat and bullet holes riddled the windows. One passenger had been shot in the shoulder, another in the back, and three people took bullets to the legs. The injured were taken to Stanger Hospital. According to a police source,

venders at the rank packed up their stalls and fled while Maphumulo Taxi Association drivers were allegedly arguing with police. According to the source, drivers wanted to know why the police only closed their rank. They allegedly also demanded that the KwaDukuza rank be closed. The KwaDukuza taxi rank is divided into the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo sections. While Maphumulo taxi drivers were in dispute with the police officers, KwaDukuza taxi owners and drivers were protected by their security guards, armed with R5 rifles.

WADUKUZA is the fastest growing tourist attraction in the province. This announcement comes after KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu launched Tourism Month (September 2014) at the Luthuli Museum on Friday, aiming to foster awareness of the importance of tourism. The theme for this year’s Tourism Month, as announced by the National Department of Tourism, is “Tourism, Transforming Lives”. This is derived from the United Nations’ World Tourism Day message, “Tourism and Community Development”. The focus of the Tourism Month message is to showcase the value of tourism in the social, cultural, political and economic sectors. >> Protesters want the district education manager removed

Sadtu members marched through the streets of KwaDukuza on Thursday.

JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) KwaDukuza branch embarked on rolling mass action last week. Schools throughout the Lower Tugela education district were closed on Thursday when Sadtu member marched through the streets of KwaDukuza demanding the resolution of 20 grievances.

Schools were forced to postpone examinations set for Thursday due to the action. Sadtu leaders also visited schools to ensure no members were present for the day. The mass action continued on Friday, however pupils were allowed to write their examinations before teachers left. Of the 20 grievances, at the top of the list is the removal of district education manager Caroline

Police deployed at taxi rank after gunfire exchange FROM PAGE 1 The cause of the violence remains unclear. Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the shooting happened at the rank in full view of commuters. “The two associations have been at loggerheads for many years. Police have been deployed at the rank and are monitoring the situation. No arrests have been made.” The ongoing feud between the associations has claimed many lives from both sides in the past few years. In April one person was wounded during a shoot-out between security guards from rival taxi associations. In July taxi drivers argued over routes once again ‘holding the town to ransom’. KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu noted with concern another shooting spree at the rank. “I am shocked to learn of this bar-

baric incident. No amount of violence and intimidation can bring stability and resolve problems in the industry. The area seems to be experiencing a new wave of killings. “We have started processes as a department to intervene and resolve their dispute. “I am confident that police will arrest the perpetrators of this crime. I appeal for calm and stability. This new wave of attacks is threatening business investment in the area that has a huge potential,” said Mchunu. Mchunu reiterated his commitment to work with the leadership of the taxi industry in looking for solutionsin‘allthechallengesconfronting the taxi industry’. The situation at the rank has since been calm, however, a constant police presence is being maintained to counter further possible incidents this week. PHOTO: SUP PLIED

Velakazi, Maphumulo circuit managers EB Gcabashe and T. Ntuli. Sadtu has accused Velakazi of reducing pro-active relations in the department, of not attending various meetings and interfering in the appointment of principals at various schools, among other issues. Schools have since returned to normal, however Sadtu is still awaiting a response from the Department of Education.

Paramedics from IPSS Medical Rescue treat one of the victims at the rank.

Man gets 8 years for buying stolen property MERVYN KRISHNA

T

HE KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court sent out a strong message to those who purchase stolen property. This after an Umhlali resident purchased a 1998 Toyota Corolla for R2 000 from a person known to him. The accused confessed to purchasing the vehicle with the intention for using it for spares. PhumlaniNgobesewasfoundguilty

and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, of which half was suspended for five years on condition that he is notfoundguiltyofanysimilaroffences. The accused will thus spend an effective four years in prison. In sentencing, the State argued that these types of offences go hand in hand with theft, and that people like the accused created a market for stolen goods. The State said a message needed to be sent to society that such conduct

will not be tolerated. Investigating officer, detective I Mzobe from the Umhlali SAPS said: “Selling and receiving stolen goods is a crime, which could result in a prison sentence. People need to think twice before buying if a deal sounds too good to be true. “The stolen goods market generates numerous victims and people should not forget the misery and concern those offences such as robbery, burglary and theft cause.”

Ballito resident and Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quentin Power, who attended the scene, said he had also broken some bones. “He had fractured foot and broken ribs with some contusions on his chest and back, was severely dehydrated, we suspected spinal injuries and internal injuries possibly to lungs due to the nature of the fall and entrapment,” said Power. The community said Mbusiseni (35) had been on his way home from

his uncle’s house a few kilometres away and then went missing. He allegedly fell while walking. The induna alerted the police and rescue service after one of the herders apparentlyheardmoaningcomingfromthe mountain side. Rescue teams got the call just before noon on Saturday. Specialised Rescue, SAPS K9 Rescue, SAPS Search and Rescue and Netcare911 Rescue units responded with EMRS chopper on standby due to the remote location. They found the man had fallen into a crevice between the rocks that had an opening of about 30cm and tapered smaller then opened again at the bottom. Power said initially it looked like a typical cliff rescue, but realised it was more intense once rescue teams started. “On arrival at the scene it looked like a normal cliff rescue that we have executed hundreds of times.

Upon reaching the patient the rescue became extremely technical due to the nature of the patient’s entrapment,” said Power. Rescue teams thought if they could not manually extricate him, they would need extreme hydraulic and pneumatic rescue equipment to do the job. Power and the rescue technicians from Netcare911 executed the extrication, and police search and rescue assisted to lift the patient out the crevice to the rescue basket. They managed rescue lines with the specialised rescue team, and set up the hauling systems to bring the patient and rescuers back to the top where the helicopter and crew were waiting. “It took a little over two hours for us to extricate the patient and

N 1998, my newly single mother and four of her children moved into our new home in Port Dunford, which came as a huge shock for “township kids” who grew up in places like eSikhawini and uMlazi. The place was quite rural back then and we didn’t have television until late 1998; even then, it was a black-and-white one with a screen the size of a large cellphone. The place wasn’t so bad, I mean,

unhappy with the pit loo in the backyard, I had forgotten any better then and at eight I was fairly satisfied with the situation. Wehadapitlatrineacoupleofdozen metres from the “bedroom house” (there was also a lounge and a separate kitchen house). The toilet had four rickety walls and a door that was too small for the frame so it never really closed. For those who have never used one, a pit latrine consists of a hole where your excrement drops to be devoured by all manner of microbes and creepy crawlies, the way nature intended. One of the bugs that would occasionally find its way in there

One could not complain much, considering that some people still use the bucket system - a system that is understandably awkward for both the producer of the waste and the municipal employee tasked with handling the stuff. KZN Cogta’s Nomusa Dube-Ncube launched an attack on municipalities still implementing the bucket system in KZN after the president set a deadline of September 2014 during his State of the Nation Address in June. One such municipality was our uMhlathuze, which initially denied having any records of the system in its jurisdiction, but was later left with egg on its face when a visit from Cogta representatives found a different story. The system was in full swing in at least 83 households in Mandlazini just outside Richards Bay. R10 000 each. Why not build proper toilets instead? Well, there is an ongoing project to have a sewerage system installed for the area over a period of time. Until then, close to R100 000 will be used to fix an issue that never should have been in the first place. I find it sad that it took the president setting this deadline before something was done. I could mention a plethora of incidents where people have actually died as a result of falling into a toilet, Chief is the six-year-old boy who died in a school pit toilet in January in Mpumalanga. Then there was the man who was found dead after going missing for a week in February. He was found in an eSikhawini pit latrine. Yes, it looks like I have written a column about poop and pit toilets, but I am trying to highlight the plight of some people from a perspective I actually understand. From personal experience I can tell you that pit toilets are, well, crap, because they are a direct attack on human dignity. They need to be done away with a massive sense of urgency.

We used to have clear views of the green planes around us as far as the eye can see, save for some gum-tree forests here and there. Mother tried her best to look after us and we were happy. There is one thing I can single out that aided in my missing the township life over the three years we lived there - flushing toilets. One seldom considers the importance of having a flushing toilet in the house. Yes, sure it is quite imperative for hygiene purposes, but there is also the dignity part. The Mandeni Campus Community Project, spearheaded by Nombali Mbangwa, is aimed at encouraging the youth to be actively involved in assisting fellow underprivileged students. According to Mbangwa, the organisation has already started donating food parcels and clothing to students. “After taking part in Mandela Day activities last year, I realised that there is a lot we can do to uplift others. This should not only be done on Mandela Day, but every day. “The country needs people of this caliber to contribute in reducing poverty. “We hope to get more students involved which will help some of them to lose focus on drugs and alcohol,” said Mbangwa, who said he is grateful to the Students Support Services Department for always lending a help-

Sporting equipment for KCS inmates

N an effort to assist moral regeneration at the KwaDukuza Correctional Service, the Department of Sport and Recreation handed over sporting equipment to inmates last week. The Rec-rehab programme

encourages active participation in sport and recreational activities, working with various stakeholders, namely the local and district municipalities, various sporting code federations and Lovelife. The inmates in the two correctional facilities in the iLembe District, situated in Maphumulo and KwaDukuza

are granted an opportunity to be rehabilitated using various games such as finger board, snakes and ladders, table soccer, chess, Umlabalaba, snooker/pool, table tennis and volleyball and compete in leagues and tournaments within their facilities. Some of the items handed over included a snooker/pool table set, table tennis set, table soccer set, volleyball quick set and balls, chess sets, playing cards, Umlabalaba sets and various board games. The equipment handover stems from a request by the inmates themselves on the type of equipment they use and refreshing the equipment that is starting to deteriorate, this thereforeallowsforexpandingthelimited equipment to more inmates. The department has appealed to the private sector to assist in beefing up efforts to ensure that the crime levels are decreased through creating sustainable rehabilitative initiatives.

JYOTHI LALDAS ONE of the most valued ambitions of Stanger Hospital is, according to the hospital, to strive towards achieving the quality of service and standards experienced on a private level. In an effort to achieve this, Stanger Hospital’s pharmacy department held a programme during Pharmacy Week (1-5 September). The theme this year for Pharmacy Week was “Use antibiotics wisely”. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing pharmaceutical challenges the world is facing today. The aim of Pharmacy Week this year was to incorporate the theme outlined by the SAPC within a programme that is both educational and effective. This was done because antibiotic resistance is a challenge that affects both health professionals of various levels as well as patients alike. Monday, 1 September saw the official launch of Pharmacy Week at the hospital. The outpatient team had prepared posters to display to patients in the waiting area. Different activities took place throughout the week as presentations were done in waiting areas as well as the clinics. The chronic team from the pharmacy also visited the KwaDukuza and Groutville clinics as well as the RA Moodley Home for the Aged.

In the absence of “big brother” Neil Perumal, the responsibility fell on the shoulders of the talented Singh, who rose majestically above his adversaries to cement Grove End’s position at the top of the log table. Trailing by a solitary point (17-18), the KSST fans expected their heroes to go into overdrive and pull off a sensational victory in the opening set.
