HIS Friday, South Africans will gather at poverty stricken areas, creches, old age homes, soup kitchens and prisons to mark the first International Mandela Day since former president Nelson Mandela’s death. Mandela would have turned 96 on Friday, 18 July and according to KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu, the day will be one of celebrations in KwaDukuza “Please do something for your community. Do something for the people of KwaDukuza. This is what Mandela would have wanted.”

The mayor said options for pro-active community work are endless. “Go to the hospital and clean the floors. Go to the graveyard and clean up around graves, scrub schools, anything.” Mthembu went on to say that there will never be another like Madiba. “Mandela, throughout his life, hardly ever used the word ‘I’. It was always ‘We’. ‘This is what we want, this is what we will do,’ he would say. “He did not want much for himself. All he wanted was for the people of South Africa to unite and live in peace and harmony. “July 18 cannot be just another day. I am pleased that not only South Africans but the world at large will celebrate his birthday. “One thing we should remember is Mandela’s attempts and contribution towards reconcilia-

tion, forgiveness, unity and respect.” The mayor’s programme includes a men’s dialogue in Ward 10, a prison visit, a briefing on the public service week programme, public servant motivation at the Town Hall, a Nyathikazi War Room anti-drug campaign in Ward three, unveiling of a Madiba Memorial Wall, cleaning of the CBD, a blanket donation, meal distribution and Ballito pregnancy crises centre visit. Friday will also see ‘Food for Life’ KwaDukuza distributing 10 000 plates of food to the underprivileged communities in KwaDukuza. The meals will be prepared at the Food for Life kitchen in Yellowood Road in the early hours of Friday morning. To assist the organisation with delivery or preparation of the meals, contact the office on 032 551 1163 or 082 449 3879 or 082 829 3880.

T

HE KwaDukuza Pipe Replacement project is going full steam ahead. Construction started on Monday in Zinkwazi, Stanger Manor and High Ridge and Stanger Heights areas. The aim of the project is to address water interruptions caused by ageing infrastructure in some KwaDukuza areas. iLembe District Municipality infrastructure portfolio committee chairperson councillor Jabulani Zondo and the acting director of technical services, Notha Maphumulo, met with the project manager and the contractor at the campsite located just off the R74 near the Engen service station in Stanger

Manor to gauge the progress of the project. Contractor SBT Civils has been appointed for all three wards - Ward three (Zinkwazi), Ward 17 (Stanger Manor and High Ridge) as well as Ward 16 (Stanger Heights). With the help of the councillors and the appointed public steering committees , 90 people have been employed to date. “The procurement process for the Blythedale project is underway. “Once the contractor is appointed, work will begin. It is important to let our people know that during construction, water interruptions should be expected but will be kept at a minimum, for not more than five hours, and notice will be given 48 hours prior to cut-offs,” said Zondo.

Notha Maphumulo, councillor Jabulani Zondo, Thami Khangama of SBT Civils and Sanele Ndlovu of Magnacorp Project Managers give a thumbs up to the pipe replacement project. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Call for calm after taxi boss murder

Win Big: Week four winner

>> Ngcobo was ambushed by gunmen and shot dead

S

AFETY officials are appealing for calm after the murder of the chairperson of the Mandeni/Sundumbili Taxi Association.

Acting transport MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo met with the executive of the association last week aiming to bring peace to the area. Bhekizenzo Ngcobo was ambushed by gunmen and shot dead on Tuesday afternoon. The department says there has been growing tension between the Mandeni/ Sundumbili and Nyoni taxi associations over a major route to industrial areas in Isithebe. Last week, security

guards allegedly opened fire at the Mandeni taxi rank during an incident that is believed to be linked to the dispute. Earlier this year, a taxi operator and her husband were burned to death in the area in what is believed to be taxi violence related. Dhlomo has appealed to the taxi-operators to co-operate with police in the investigation in order to prevent the loss of more lives. He says Mandeni has become a hot spot for taxi violence and has warned that it is endangering communities and the growth of the local economy.

HILD Welfare SA-KwaDukuza held their Winter Fair thank you party on Friday night at the Stanger Town Hall. The event was attended by conveners and their teams who assisted at Winter Fair 2014. The volunteers were treated to a sumptuous meal and given certificates for their contributions. Guitar maestro Dane Francis together with his band entertained the crowd. Fair director, Sundeep Oudhram said the Winter Fair has become a prominent feature on the town’s social calendar and Child Welfare SA-KwaDukuza has “pulled out all stops” to make the fair a memorable one.

Enjoying the thank you party are Byron Anthymoolan, Marlen and Shantha Nair and Babes Anthymoolan. “The Winter Fair, apart from being a social event for the community of KwaDukuza, has a deeper significance as proceeds

are utilised to provide much needed services such as professional welfare services, an Aids programme, drug awareness, child

protection skills and poverty alleviation projects. It is impossible to put together and co-ordinate an event of the fair’s magnitude without support from a number of people. “ To all sponsors and donors we record our sincere thanks andappreciation,”said Oudhram. He went on to say they are grateful for the schools in KwaDukuza who continue to give their unwavering support to the fair. “To the hundreds of volunteers and their families who sacrifice their personal time to ensure that our fair is a success we remain forever indebted to you. “Last but not least, the community of KwaDukuza who have always heeded our call to support our fair - thank you.”

After attending yoga classesandmeditationworkshops, andresearching the art of Zen while inhaling copious amounts of incense, I am still unable to abide the rash, brash and frankly stupid actions of the following groups of people: The young and in love, the old and obstinate, giggling gossipers and those who thinkthatDSTVoffersanyvalueformoney

On the up side – yes, Santa, I really have been a good girl in many respects – I am proud to report the following: I have refrainedfrominflictingharmonanybody,at least in a physical sense. WEEKLY

Letter A slap on the wrist I AM a resident of Stanger Manor and a fan of your paper; I write this with much concern about the justice system of our country. Crime, like in any town, city or country is always rife and never an easy task to combat. I understand that this is a problem that will never go away, but I do believe that it can be controlled on a much larger scale than is being done now. In recent times I have become highly disgusted by the sentencing that's been given to “the scum” who have committed premeditated and barbaric crimes. The law might as well do nothing because the time given in jail is like a

7

slap on the wrist, a mild warning to would-be offenders walking the streets. A man who kills his girlfriend because she broke up with him gets 12 years; is that justice? We live in a society where a girl is strangled to death by the gardener and he gets 15 years in prison. Is this the law we respect and trust? A 30-year-old woman kills her infant baby by strangulation and gets 15 years. Is this the going rate for murder? Most of the time these criminals are let out on early parole, free once again to plague our society. So I say bring in the death penalty; increase sentencing to life without parole, let the families of the victims have peace of mind knowing that the person that took their loved one away is where they belong - out of society. Foot surgery the future? >> Forget botox and fillers – foot surgery to fit into those killer heels is the new fad.

This surgery is purely for cosmetic purposes.

B

IZARRE beauty treatments are nothing new. We’ve probably heard them all – from the cultural practice of stretching one’s earlobes, to hand rejuvenation surgery in order to take the perfect engagement ring

selfie. But, nothing could quite prepare us for the horror (and ridiculousness) that is “Cinderella surgery”. It’s not sommer a surgery to fix a medical problem. No. This surgery is purely for cosmetic purposes. For making it easier to wear highheel shoes to be exact. According to the Daily Mail, the procedure involves shortening or lengthening of toes, shaving off parts of the toe to make it more streamline and sucking excess fat from big toes. It costs close to R100 000 and althoughyou’llbeabletoweartheshoes of your dreams (because apparently ugly feet aren’t the worst thing ever. I mean, really, who cares what your feet look like? They’re in shoes most of the time anyway, right?) Anyway. Other than the ridiculous price tag, orthopedic surgeons warn that cutting toes open, sawing the bones and sewing them back together has the potential for serious complications, like permanentpainandrestrictedjointmovement. But hey, as long as you have pretty shoes, right? By: Jana Joubert

EXFOLIATORS are lovely, but aren't very good for the environment. Why nottrysomehome-madescrubrecipes instead? If used correctly, nothing beats an exfoliating scrub to help clear dead skin, cleanse pores, and make you feel fresh. One problem: the miniature plastic microbeads found in most exfoliating products are horribly bad for the environment. Micro-beads are tiny balls of plastic. So tiny, research has shown they're too small to be sifted out during water treatment, and so they're winding up in lakes and oceans where they have devastating effects, according to Time. For this reason, many states in America are considering a ban on these beads. In fact, Illinois has banned them already. A South African ban on micro-beads is probably quite far away, but that's no reason to keep using products that hurt the environment. Luckily for us and our skin, home-made exfoliator is cheap and easy to make, environmentally friendly, and, above all, absolutely luxurious. We could list a collection of recipes, but all recipes follow the same basic formula: Base + Exfoliator Sometimes it's a little more complicated like: Base + Base + Exfoliator + Optional Extras But you get the idea. Following our guide to the best bases and exfoliators, try mix and match to find the perfect recipes for you. We have listed some example recipes as well. Note: Used roughly, exfoliator can tear and harm the skin. Make sure you only exfoliate gently and in moderation. Remember, exfoliatorcanbeharsh, somake sure you only mix in a small amount, especially if you're making a scrub for your face.

A South African ban on micro-beads is probably quite far away, but that's no reason to keep using products that hurt the environment. Not everyone's skin is the same. Do research before adding an ingredient to your scrub to make sure it's okay for your skin type. Bases: 1) Honey A natural anti-bacterial, honey is both healing and moisturising. 2) Milk Cleopatra bathed in milk and honey for a reason. Milk should leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. 3) Water Nothing like plain old water. 4) Green tea Revitalising and refreshing, green tea is one of those things that's good for you both inside and out! 5) Olive Oil Oil is the ultimate moisturiser, though don't feel olive oil is your only option. You might want to try avocado oil, coconut oil, or even sunflower oil instead. Exfoliators: Note: not all exfoliators are going to be okay for your face. Make sure you only use exfolia-

tors with a very fine grain. 1) Bicarbonate of soda Perfect for delicate exfoliating, as in a face scrub, bicarbonate of soda is like microbeads - without the horrible environmental effects. 2) Sugar Whodoesn'thavesugar?Tryacoarsebrown sugar for your body scrub, or a fine castor sugar for your face. 3) Oatmeal Best mixed with warm water or milk, as it should be slightly cooked, oatmeal is wonderfully soothing, and can help with everything from sunburn to acne. It's probably the safest option, especially for your face. 4) Ground Coffee The best thing about this exfoliator is the delicious scent. Coffee is also meant to have anti-cellulite properties, as well as being full of antioxidants, and should help tighten and tone. -Women24

What can you do on Mandela Day? >> Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. It’s fitting that we give 67 minutes of our time

People are asked to spend 67minutes of the day helping someone else.

M

ADIBA is one of South Africa's greatest heroes. Not only is he loved and adored by South Africans, he is also revered internationally. So much so, that his birthday on 18 July is celebrated as Mandela Day the world over - with it even being officially endorsed by the United Nations. *What is Mandela Day The message is simple. Mandela gave 67 years of hislifefightingfortherightsofhumanity.Itseemsonly fitting that we give 67 minutes of our time on this day, whether it’s supporting a chosen charity or serving in the local community. It is a day where Nelson Mandela's life's work is celebrated annually through an act of kindness. People are asked to spend 67minutes of the day helping someone else. What can I do with my 67 minutes you might be asking? Really, there are no set rules. Anything that will impact someone else's life positively. Scott Adams, author and creator of the Dilbert comic strip, said, "Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." Otherwise, here are some ideas... 1. Make a new friend. Get to know someone from a different cultural background. Only through mutual understanding can we rid our communities of intolerance and xenophobia. 2. Read to someone who can't. Visit a local home for the blind and open up a new world for someone else. 3. Fix the potholes in your street or neighbourhood. 4. Help out at the local animal shelter. Dogs without homes still need a walk and a bit of love. 5. Find out from your local library if it has a story hour and offer to read during it. 6.Offertotakeanelderlyneighbourwhocan'tdrive to do their shopping/chores. 7. Organise a litter cleanup day in your area. 8. Get a group of people to each knit a square and make a blanket for someone in need. 9. Volunteer at your police station or local faithbased organisation. 10. Donate your skills! 11. If you're a builder, help build or improve someone's home. 12. Help someone to get his/her business off the ground. 13. Build a website for someone who needs one, or for a cause you think needs the support. 14. Help someone get a job. Put together and print a CV for them, or help them with their interview skills. 15. If you're a lawyer, do some pro bono work for a worthwhile cause or person. 16. Write to your area councillor about a problem in the area that requires attention, which you, in your personal capacity, are unable to attend to. 17. Sponsor a group of learners to go to the theatre/ zoo. Help out for good health 18. Get in touch with your local HIV organisations and find out how you can help. 19. Help out at your local hospice, as staff members often need as much support as the patients. 20. Many terminally ill people have no one to speak to. Take a little time to have a chat and bring some sunshine into their lives. 21. Talk to your friends and family about HIV. 22. Get tested for HIV and encourage your partner to do so too. 23. Take a bag full of toys to a local hospital that has a children's ward. 24.Takeyoungermembersofyourfamilyforawalk in the park. 25. Donate some medical supplies to a local community clinic. 26. Take someone you know, who can't afford it,

to get their eyes tested or their teeth checked. 27. Bake something for a support group of your choice. 28. Start a community garden to encourage healthy eating in your community. 29. Donate a wheelchair or guide dog, to someone in need. 30. Create a food parcel and give it to someone in need. Become an educator 31. Offer to help out at your local school. 32. WEEKLY REPORTER DEVAN Gounden ousted veteran darts campaigner Paddy Padayachee(2-1)toclinchtheVinesh Geanballey and Family-sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association singles darts tournament playedattheTasteofIndiaRestaurant in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. With the more fancied players falling by the wayside, Gounden seized the opportunity with both hands to oust Terrence Subban in straight sets (2-0) to book his place in the semi-final against Vishalin ParmasivanwhotrouncedSashen Naidoo (2-0) in the quarters. In the top half of the draws the moreexperiencedJerryGovender slumped to a humiliating 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ashley Harripersaad in the quarter-final. Padayachee, clawed his way from a set down to beat the in-form Charlie Pillay 2-1 to book his place in the semi’s. Harripersaad’s hopes of securing his first major silverware of the 2014 was dented after he was sent crashing out of the tournament(2-0)inthesemi’sagainstPadayachee.

Darts enthusiasts expected the talented Parmasivan to outwit Gounden in the semi’s, but they were left gasping for breath after he (Gounden) silenced his critics with a clinical 2-0 win to book his place in the final. The final was fiercely contested with Gounden winning the first set comfortably. Padayachee returnedthefavour, winningthesecond set to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a third and decisive set. Padayachee was late off the starting blocks in the final set and despite amassing huge scores after a sluggish start, Gounden was already on his bicycle racing to the finish line to annex his first major silverware of the 2014 season. President of KwaDukuza Darts Association Jerry Govender congratulated finalists Gounden and Padayachee and expressed his sincerethankstotheVineshGeanballey family for their generous sponsorship. SST are expected to take a power of beating in their quest to successfully defend the Ralph Reuben Memorial Knockout title on Thursday night at the association courts at 8pm. Syd Kistan’s charges have shown tremendous resolve in their semi-final clash, clawing their way from a set down to beat arch-rivals Grove End 2-1 to book their place in the final. The KSST outfit boast a wealth of talented players including the likes of prolific attackers Cameron Singh and Carnel Joseph, versatile setter Sherwin Daniels, the exuberance of the youthful duo of Kyle Puckree and Dillon and outstanding libero Albiston Jaram, who are not going to settle to be the bridesmaid on Thursday night. They do battle with former competitive league champions Randsons who have been blowing hot and cold since the start of the 2014 season. Randsons will be pinning their hopes on veteran campaigners Ahmed Essack and Neeraj Bageloo to upset the formbook and give their supporters something to cheer about. In an earlier game, Grove End and rookies Darnall United do battle for a podium finish. The likes of Vinnie Singh, Niven Baldeo and Neil Perumal are expected to guide Grove End to a comfortable victory.
