Cogta approves disaster declaration >> Drought: iLembe District faces crisis situation

T

HE KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has welcomed provincial cabinet’s decision todeclaredisasterareasinregionsaffected by drought. This includes the iLembe District where it was announced last week that the area is facing a crisis situation. “The effects of drought are now treated as an emergency with all our capacity being placed at the disposal of the affected regions. The declaration of disaster areas also opens the way for additional assistance and funding for KZN from the national government,” said KZN MEC for Cogta Nomusa Dube-Ncube. The other regions most affected by drought and declared disaster areas are uMkhanyakude, uThungulu, Zululand, uMgungundlovu, Harry Gwala, uMzinyathi and uThukela.

These areas have experienced rainfall well below normal and this has affected water levels in various catchments. “Our preliminary assessment of damagestotheprovince, especiallyto livestock and crops, currently stands at R400 million, but this is by no means the final tally as our assess-

tional pressure on the province’s resources as these services now have to be extended to areas which under normal circumstances will have sufficient water supplies. According to Dube-Ncube government is concerned about some communities, iLembe included, who have responded to water shortages with

As an interim solution municipalities are supplying water tankers and Jojo tanks throughout the affected regions, however, this is putting addi-

HE revamped Nyathikazi Crèche was opened amid much excitement on Monday by officials from Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM) and the non-profit organisation ukuPhakamisa. The run-down crèche on the rural outskirts of Darnall, was discovered by KwaDukuza Municipality Ward 3 councillor James van Whye and brought to the attention of Cheryl Wolhurter from ukuPhakamisa. They then undertook a renovation, thanks to main sponsor DCLM. The crèche caters for more than 20 children between the ages of four and six from the Nyathikazi community. The organisation also provided educational toys, tables and chairs and undertook the completion of an incomplete foundation for an assembly area. SMA hosts book launch >> Author was the keynote speaker at the event

News

T

HE Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) hosted a presentation and launch of the “highly acclaimed” book “Why Israel?” last Wednesday at the KwaDukuza Municipal Library. The event was attended by a cross-section of people representing various sectors of the KwaDukuza community. Guests included ANC regional secretary Muzi Sithole, KwaDukuza Municipality director of communications Sifiso Zulu and Sihle Mathibela, KwaDukuza Municipality manager of libraries, museums and halls. Author of the book Suraya Dadoo was the keynote speaker at the event. Shepresentedacomprehensiveandinformative speech about the Israel-Palestine conflict comparing and likened the situation to the South African apartheid regime. Guests were briefed about the socio-economic and political situation in Palestine and her motivation for co-authoring the book with Firoz Osman. “This campaign cuts across race, religion and politics. Also, this is not about anti-Semitism – it is taking a stand against segregation and State-sponsored discrimination. Many fought against the apartheid state and lobbied for boycotts, divestment and sanctions, the result of which was a free and democratic South Africa. Apartheid fell as a result of these efforts – we are advocating the same with Israel,” said Dadoo. Books were sold at the event at a cost of R250 each and were personally signed by Dadoo. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and complimented the SMA on their efficiency and level of organisation.

Talking World Spine Day with Dr Natasha Singh THE vertebral column, also known as the backbone or spine, is a bony skeletal structure found in human beings. It is formed from individual bones call vertebrae. With its unique structure, these form the spinal canal which serves as protection for the spinal cord. The vertebral column usually consists of 33 vertebrae; the upper 24 are vertebrae, separated by intervertebral discs and the lower nine are fused, five fused in the sacrum and four in the coccyx. The articulating vertebrae (i.e. the bones of the spine that form joints with other bones such as the ribs and other vertebrae) are grouped into their regions; there are seven cervical vertebrae of the neck (C1 to C7); twelve thoracic vertebrae of the thorax(T1toT12);andfivelumbarvertebrae of the lower back above the pelvis (L1 to L5). This number is sometimes increased by an additional vertebra in one region, or it may be diminished in one region. The spinal cord is a long tubular bundle of nervous tissue and support cells that extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem. The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system (CNS). The spinal cord begins at the occipital bone and extends down to the space between the first and second lumbar vertebrae; it does not extendtheentirelengthofthespinalcolumn. The spinal cord functions to transmit neural signals from the brain to the body and vice versa. It also has many neural circuits which control reflexes and functions in maintaining the integrity of the nervous system. With the natural process of aging and strenuous activity over a period of time, the spine undergoes degeneration. When this occurs, it can result in inflammation and pain, predominantly in the neck and upper back as well as the lower back regions. Chiropractic treatment has been

showntobemosteffectiveinreducing neck and back pain as well as restoring mobility by reducing restriction, inflammation and pain. Chiropractors treat all issues related to the spinal column, including nerves, spinal discs as well as muscles, ligaments and tendons in and around this area. In addition, chiropractors also treat ALL joints in the body from the jaw (Temporomandibular joint) to the baby toe. Chiropractic is scientific, thriving, andsafeandtakesanaturalapproach to better health that avoids drugs or surgery. It SUPPORTS THE BODY and assists it in relearning its natural ability to be able to heal itself. Chiropractic treatment will include different modalities and treatment protocols depending on the specific needs of patients. Chiropractic adjustments, mobilisations, dry needling, electrotherapy, soft tissue therapy, stretching exercises, as well as strengthening and core exercises will be implemented, depending on the state of health of the patient, in order to restore optimal health. If you have had any specific surgery or injury, rehabilitation will be carried out as necessary. Stressplaysahugeroleinallofour lives. When we experience a stressful emotion, the body releases stress chemicals. These chemicals are released into our blood stream which flows through muscle and joints. These in turn have a contracting effect on our muscles and joints, hence, resulting in neck, lower back pain or pain in different joints and areas of the body. Therefore, maintaining your chiropractic treatment sessions will assist your body in handling LIFE stresses better. Stay calm and peaceful, be happy. When you are happy, you will heal. For an appointment contact DR NATASHA SINGH.

If you work at a desk, simply turn your chair away from the centre of your work to the side. Ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, and hip width apart. Your feet may be slightly turned outward, abdominal muscles (tummy) must be tucked in (without holding your breath – simply make the tummy muscles flatter by pulling them in). The shoulders must be back, but relaxed, chest out, chin gently tucked in (down to chest and gently pulled back), hands can be placed on the sides of the thigh on both sides, palms facing outwards such that the inner part of your forearm rests lightly on the outer sides of your thighs on both sides. This is correct posture. Close your eyesandbreatheinandout.Thereafter, after breathing in, hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Whilst holding your breath, feel that breath of air calmly moving to all parts of your body and energising you from your toes all the way to your head. Take, approximately, 10 deep but gentle breaths in and out in this manner, while maintaining your posture. When you open your eyes, you will be re-energised and less stressed, much more relaxed and able to continuewithyourdailywork.Yourmind will be more focussed and free from negative thoughts.

It was special not in the sense of our mental challenges, which I don’t think I had, but in the way we were made to feel proud to be in a classroom the size of two and being taught by two teachers at the same time. Fast forward to another school in a township and I found myself in a class of about 70 pupils in grade five and we were told how lucky we were to be in such a small class. There were

Not all will prosper rumours of model C schools in town having as little as 20 to 30 pupils, but this was disregarded as “utter nonsense” and just being another urban legend. As the years went by and I changed schools, the class numbers varied and something disturbing occurred when I went to high school. We were given a chance to decide our futures in grade nine, a year before we were made to choose subjects we would study for the remainder of our schooling careers. I will be honest, I chose physics because I thought it sounded cool and despised accounting as I vaguely knew that my older sister studied it and she looked miserable when she spoke about it. As luck would have it, I chose a class with physics and biology and core mathematics and accounting as well. There were seven grade 10 classes in our school and I was in the “double-science” class. We were the guinea pigs for the then new National Senior Certificate and no one knew what to expect from us in terms of pass rates. Our school had a 95% pass rate (about 200 pupils) in the previous year and we were under pressure to keep it that way or improve. In the end, we achieved a 96% or so pass rate, but only a quarter or so of us qualified for university. Of that minute number, a smaller fraction still, got accepted at university, and fewer stillcouldafforditorwerelucky enough to get financial aid. If this story has a moral to it, it may be that we have to remember that not all of us will prosper and that is a reality we caneitherchoosetoacceptorchange. The reality is, it exists.

AWNHEIGHTS Cricket Club trounced Umlazi by 24 runs in their own backyard (Comtech Ground)inaKwaZulu-NatalChallenge League game played on Sunday. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Dawnheights opener, Sagar Arora showed scant respect for the Umlazi attack. Dillon Rautenbach claimed 4/14 from 4 overs. In other cricket news, a bumper crowd is expected at the Country Club Ground on Sunday to witness some explosive action in the KZN Challenge League derby game between Ilembe and Dawnheights. Opener Ngema (34) and lower order batsman, S. Shange (37) were the pick of the Umlazi batsmen. Pal was the destroyer-in-chief for Dawnheights claiming 7 scalps for 49 runs from 10 overs. Meanwhile, at the Country Club Ground, Ilembe proved too strong for Newlands East after romping to a fluent 98-runs victory in a KZN Challenge League game. Isithebe Paints scrape to victory WEEKLY REPORTER ISITHEBE Paints Darts Club scraped to a narrow 19-17 victory against Gledhow United in a KwaDukuza Darts AssociationLeaguegameplayedattheDolphinCoast Tavern in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. After a tame 3-3 draw in the opening frame, Isithebe upped their tempo in the second frame winning 5-1 to steer clear of their rivals (8-4). United held onto a hard fought 3-3 stalemate in the thir frame to stay in contention for honours. They reduced the deficit to 2-points (11-13) after winning the fourth frame (4-2). United put immense pressure upon themselves heading into the final frame of the evening after sharing the spoils (3-3) in the penultimate frame. They needed to win the final frame by a margin of 4-points in the hope of snatching victory at the death. But, Isithebe hardly moved out of the first gear, holding onto a 3-3 draw in the final frame to register a hard earned 19-17 win to keep their league title aspirations alive. Meanwhile, Nevil’s Auto squandered an opportunity of notching up a hat-trick of victories in the KwaDukuza Darts Association League after going down 19-18 in the tie-breaker against rookies R & B Gledhow. Nevil’s Auto were quickly off the starting blocks notching up a handsome 4-2 win in the opening frame. Gledhow came back strongly in the second frame, snatching a late 3-3 equalizer. Nevil’s Auto were all the rage romping to a fluent 5-1 win in the third frame and boasting a comfortable 12-6 lead, fans expected them to turn on the heat after the halfway stage. But, Gledhow must be commended after collaring their rivals at the finish line (18-18) to push the game into a tie-breaker. Darrel

Nkobongo off to a winning start >> ‘This is our first game of the 2014/2015 season and I think my boys played very well despite conceding two soft goals’ WEEKLY REPORTER

KOBONGO Football Club kicked off their campaign in the SAFA Ilembe SAB Regional League (KwaDukuza Stream) on a winning note after beating the more fancied Siyaya outfit 3-2 at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. TheNtshawini-basedSiyayaoutfit failed to take advantage of their early domination and paid the price midway into the first half. Vusi “Computer” Mlondo weaved his way past two defenders before hammering a low drive to the left of the keeper to give Nkobongo a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Martin Shezi had a

golden opportunity of grabbing a vital equalizer, but he miraculously missed the target from close range. The lanky Freedom “Vonk” Dlamini intercepted a cross from Sandile Shude on the left flank to giveNkobongoawelldeserved2-0 going into the break. Barely 10 minutes into the secondhalf,man-of-the-matchMlondo, who marshalled the engineroom brilliantly, made a darting run into the box before latching ontoacrossfromPhilaniDladlaon the right flank to give Nkobongo a commanding 3-0 lead. Nkobongo Football Club kicked off their campaign in the SAFA Ilembe Regional League with a 3-2 win against Siyaya at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. but Siyaya did brilliantly to weather the onslaught. Thulani Ntombela received a perfect through ball from Sizwe Zulu and made no mistake from close range to reduce Siyaya’s deficit (1-3). Ten minutes later Sizwe Zulu was brought down just outside the box and therefereedidnothesitatetoawardSiyaya a free-kick. The Nkobongo goalkeeper, Blessing Mandikane failed to stave off Sizwe Mhlongo’s brilliantly executed free-kick and watched in disbelief as the ball hit the roof of the net. In the dying minutes of the game

David “Tyson” Mchunu failed to land a killer blow after beating the advancing Siyaya keeper. Nonetheless, Nkobongo coach Terrence Zulu was content with their 3-2 win. Zulu said: “This is our first game of the 2014/2015 season and I think my boys played very well despite conceding two soft goals.” In an earlier SAFA Ilembe Regional League, Mthandeni Young Destroyers (MYD) held onto a nail-biting 1-0 win against TTAC. Sparks Masuku should have put MYDaheadasearlyasthefifthminute,

butinsteadofpassingtheballtotheunmarked Siyabonga Zikhani in the box he selfishly shot at goal, hitting the side-netting. In the 15th minute Zamani Yaka was involved in a one-one-one with the TTACC keeper, but he fluffed his shot, kicking straight into the arms of the keeper. In the 20th minute Mlondi “Dala”Khuzwayo latched onto a perfect pass from Sanele Mbekiswana to put MYD ahead (1-0). The second half was a dull, drab affair with MYD holding onto a hard fought 1-0 win.
