ANC KwaDukuza sides with Palestine >> R80 000 spent on backing Palestine Solidarity March

FTER hundreds of KwaDukuza residents marched through the streets of the CBD in support of Palestine on Friday, questions have arisen regarding the regional ANC’s stance in the matter. Furthermore, some ratepayers along with the African Christian

Democratic Party (ACDP), who did not support the event, are irate after the KwaDukuza Municipality shelled out R80 000 to back the Palestine Solidarity March. They believe that the money used to fund the march could have been used toward improving the “lacking” infrastructure in the town. Demonstrators, who included local ANC leadership, held placards

reading “Stop Israeli State Terror”, “Freedom for Palestine” and “Gaza End the Siege” amongst others. They also chanted “end Israel war crime” as they filed through the streets of the CBD. The protestors walked from the KwaDukuza Country Club Ground, through the streets of KwaDukuza and converged in front of the Luthuli statue at the Town Gardens where a

series of speakers including Mthembu, ANC regional secretary Muzi Sithole, public relations officer of the Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) Shain Manjoo and guest speaker Muhammed Desai, co-ordinator of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions in South Africa (BDS South Africa) addressed the crowd, further cementing their support of Palestine. One resident, Blessing Masinga has said that the march should not have been supported by the municipality as it does not represent the entire community. “There are other more important issues that the municipality could sort out and should be doing swiftly. “According to our law, any group is allowed to hold demonstrations to show their support, but it was unnecessary for our municipality to pay for it. “By this precedent, any organisation can demand the same. Part of my rates was used and I totally disagree with the wastage.” Mthembu “attacked” other political parties for not participatingintheprotest, especially the ACDP, who were against the march since its conception and chose not to participate. “In line with our ANC 2012 policy

resolutions, that called on all South Africans to support the programmes and campaigns of the Palestinian civil society which seek to put pressure on Israel, branches and structures of the ANC across the country joined the Palestine solidarity marches and Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in organising protests and pickets calling for the immediate end of Israeli violence against the Palestinian people. “We call on all South Africans, black, white, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and all others to join us in expressing our solidarity. “Solidarity will bring us together as different South Africans just as how the international anti-apartheid movement brought people together. “The Israeli regime must realise that its acts of violence like these attacks on Gaza will only lead to its international isolation. “Apartheid South Africa’s wanton killing of our people during the 1980s lead to its isolation, it would seem that Israel is taking a similar path of isolation by embarking on these attacks,” said Mthembu. Speaking on behalf of the ACDP councillor Nel Sewraj said the party requested the KwaDukuza Municipality to distance itself from the march at a meeting of council. “I asked council to refrain from any direct involvement in this march because the council represents all citizens including Jews in this municipality. “ This march expressed anti-Israeli sentiments by calling the public to stand in solidarity with Palestine only. “They even called it the ‘Palestine Solidarity’ march.”

Children hospitalised after consuming pills >> Children are reportedly in a stable condition

E

IGHT Ntshawini children have been hospitalised after ingesting tablets. The three girls and five boys, aged between two and five, were found by family members playing with empty packets of anti-epileptic medication on Monday evening. The family members then contacted KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics from KwaDukuza. According to KZN EMS media liaison officer Robert Mckenzie, the children apparently found the packets lying in an open area, near where they lived. “Paramedics examined the

children and, despite not being able to determine how medication the children had ingested, they were found to be in a stable condition. “The paramedics treated the children and monitored them closely en route to Stanger Hospital, watching for any side effects or changes in their condition.” Mckenzie said the children remained stable on the way to hospital and were handed to medical staff for further care. Despite the situation still being investigated, there are precautions that should be taken with regard to medication. • All medication to be kept out of the

reach of children. • Educate your children to not ingest or play with any medication they find. • Do not store several types of tablets in one container, keep them in their original, labelled container. Check expiry dates and return unused andor expired medication to a clinic, hospital or pharmacy for correct and safe disposal. Do not: • Flush down the toilet. • Throw in the rubbish bin. • Medication is specially prescribed, so don’t give medication to anyone else other than the person it is prescribed for.

ANC KDM sides with Palestine FROM PAGE 1 “Also, while the march called for support from various organisations, it was initiated by an Islamic organisation which gave it a pro-Palestinian bias already. “ACDP is pro-peace – not proPalestinian. “This march had too many religious overtones to be a propeace march so we chose not to participate in it. “Furthermore, I believe the municipality was too impulsive in coughing up R80 000 of ratepayers’ money in support of this march. “We do not support the

KwaDukuza Municipality’s decision.” He said the ACDP’s decision was to support Israel’s right to defend itself against the terrorist group, Hamas. “The ACDP believes the current conflict between Israel and Gaza is a result of the obsession of the terrorist militant, Hamas, to establish an Islamic state within Israeli territory. “Although propaganda in the media regarding this conflict has triggered religious feuds globally, it must be noted that this is not a religious war, but an act of terrorism.”

“They told me not to scream or they would kill me. The robbers asked me where my jewellery, money and valuables were. They took one of my scarves and wrapped it around my head and face, which made it difficult to breathe.” The men took an extension cord from the family computer and bound Maharaj’s body, immobilising her. They dragged her around the house asking her to show them where items were and beat her when she did not give them the answers they wanted.

“The cord was wrapped so tightly aroundmeitwasverypainful, andthey hit me a lot. The doctor who saw me afterwards said I have a broken seventh rib on my left side. My chest is very painful. I still can’t move about properly to do my chores.” The robbers were scared away when Maharaj’s husband drove into the yard. Although they managed to get away with R500, the rest of the items they stole and left by a fence for retrieval later were recovered. This included TVs, computers and jewellery. “I still can’t sleep without sleeping pills and pain medicine and am very scared to be left on the farm when my husband and son go to work. I have seen a counsellor once, but I am really struggling to deal with the trauma,” said Maharaj. She says she recognised one of the men, who was employed on the farm two years ago. He has been arrested by Umhlali police, but is denying involvement in the incident.

KDM employees awarded R250 000 in bursaries MERVYN KRISHNA KWADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembu handed out staff bursaries to 32 full time employees of the municipality who proved to be most deserving on Wednesday at the Supper Room at the KwaDukuza town hall. He said the imbalances of the past led him into making such a radical decision for the workforce with an intention to build. Building a strong base

of skills remains at the very to top, he said. “We are running short of skilled personnel. Workers suffered a great deal of years under repression at the hands of the old government regime and this is now the consequence. “Our bursary policy is in accord with priorities that have been set at the very highest office in government and it is this programme that we have carried for over three years that would bring prosperity for our people in a long term”, “said Mthembu.

The mayorwentontosaymostpeople have casted aspersions against the programme in the past, vilifying the good that comes with education in the organization. KwaDukuza deputy mayor, Dolly Govender said Education is priority to everyone and gender parity is within reach. “The number of candidates we receive every year indicates that we haven't lost focus. We are heading in the right direction in terms of establishing gender balances in the work-place,” she said.

Fourth-dan black belt international instructor Timur Kurmanov (left) with Humaira Khan.

JYOTHI LALDAS TAEKWONDO fighter and instructor Humaira Khan (23) recently returned from the Global Taekwon-Do Federation (GTF) Euro-Asia championships in Salerno, Italy with two silver medals. Khan, a student of fourth-dan black belt international instructor Timur Kurmanov and founder of Budo Martial Arts - where she began her journey - was placed second in both the sparring and patterns categories. Speaking about her experience, Khan said she was thrilled with the level of fighting at the tournament.

“It has been a while since I participated in an international tournament, so I was really looking forward to it. In terms of the fighting and meeting international fighters, it was great. I also enjoyed visiting the different places, it is a really beautiful country. The food, however, was a major disappointment.” Khan, a first-dan black belt in taekwondo, began her training with Budo Martial Arts in 2008 and has never looked back. “I started in karate and then I was introduced to mixed martial arts. This has helped me grow immensely as a person. “I was shy and my confidence and self-esteem levels were always low, but through martial arts I have spread my wings and become a better person.” Her aspirations for the future include achievingherthird-danblackbeltwiththesupport and training of Kurmanov, to continue training and discovering other forms of martial arts and sharing her knowledge and skills. “My dream is to facilitate my own training centre that teaches women how to regain and maintaintheir self-confidencethroughmartial arts.” Shethankedthose whosupportherthrough her journey, especially her family and Kurmanov. She encouraged people young and old to get involved in martial arts as a way of balancing their lives. Rapist gets 25 years MERVYN KRISHNA THE KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court refused to deviate from the minimum sentence and imposed an effective 25 years’ imprisonment on a rapist last week. A 19-year-old UKZN student was accosted by the accused in March 2013. He attacked her with a bush knife, robbed her of her cellphone and raped her. The incident was reported to the police who then traced the accused and apprehended him through the complainant’s cellphone. The complainant had no knowledge of her assailant and was unable to identify him. The police then strengthened the case against the accused by obtaining DNA results, which came back positive. Prosecutor Ansuya Harilal praised detective N. Mnyandu for working around the clock to gather evidence, leading to his conviction. “The suspect must have realised there was no way out for him because he pleaded guilty and asked the court for a lenient sentence. The court concurredwiththestateandrefusedtodeviate from the minimum sentences,” said Harilal.

A bang almighty DAVID Lawson’s letter (August 8, 2014) refers. When I condensed my letter against the theories of evolution and Darwinism, it did not mean that there are gaps in my education regarding science, history and theology. You insult me. Racism started in the 1600s; DavidHume,aEuropeanpsychologist,statedthatAfricans were naturally inferior to Europeans. Thomas Herbert believed that Africans were inferior and had descended from apes. Phrenology (study of skullshape), a “fake” science started even before Darwinism, stated that Africans, due to their skull shape, were inferior intellectually, culturally and morally than Europeans and Teleology stated that Africans were not thinkers and were obviously made to serve Europeans. These ideas justified the European involvement in the African-slave trade. Only a few people were against slavery and fought against it. “Slaves”,asitappearsintheBiblereferstoworkers (paid with food, clothing and shelter) who were supposed to be treated well. Aren’t we all slaves to our jobs? Aren’t we all supposed to be treated well while doing our jobs? As for slavery in Islam, the Quran neither ignores nor condemns it. In fact a large part of the Sharia is dedicated to the practice hence the position of Islamic states. Ancient Greeks were philosophers of everything around them, and included gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines and nature gods similar to the gods of ancient India. Roman barbarians (Nero and his type);

who had no culture of their own, adopted Greek culture when they conquered Greece. Galileo (Christian scientist - father of modern science) was charged with heresy when he refuted Aristotle (Greek philosopher) and the Roman Catholic Church when he agreed with Copernicus’s theory that the Earth and planets revolved around the sun. It was the Roman Catholic Church that murdered and persecuted mainline Christians (formerly known as Protestants) to such an extent that survivors had to escape to other parts of the world. The Roman Catholic Church added so much pagan traditions to Christianity that one can barely see Christ therein. So who can trust what a Roman Catholic says. By the way, the pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church, not Christ. Inconclusion, evolutioniststeachthatalllifearose from non-life and evolved from simpler creatures to more complex life forms. In other words, a tiny cell eventually became an amoeba, then a lizard, then a monkey, then finally a human over a period of billions of years. After 200 years of digging beneath all the Earth’s continents, this cannot be proven as there is no evidence. Where there is no real evidence, evolutionary scientists simply make assumptions using words like “could”, “maybe” or “perhaps”. Evolution in no way fits all the facts available. The theory of evolution is the denial of Almighty God and the denial that all living things are engineered or exquisitely designed by Him. S. Naidoo • Letter shortened.

Should be wiser I WRITE in response to the Palestine solidarity march which took place last Friday. This march should not have been supported by our municipality as it does not represent the entire community. There are other more important issues that the municipality could sort out and should be doing swiftly. There are many issues that have been lef unattended for months, and which can be given priority as the entire community should come first.

AST week I thought my cocktail of prescription medicines and recreational alcohol abuse had backfired on me when my chair at Media House started moving and shaking of its own accord. I heaved a massive sigh of relief at the realisation that others too had felt the momentary instability. Before the last particles of air from the aforementioned sigh of relief could escape my lungs, our group editor shot out of her office as it had been the quake’s epicentre, and summarily ordered us to evacuate the building, using a voice even more ferocious than the one she saves for when a misplaced apostrophe creeps into a newspaper.

According to our law, any group is allowed to hold demonstrations to show their support, but it was unnecessary for our municipality to pay for it. Surely this is being biased to a particular group. By this precedent set, any organisation can demand the same. Our municipality should be wiser in making decisions in the best interest for the entire community. Part of my rates was used and I totally disagree with the wastage. Blessing Masinga

The voices all around me seemed to be in agreement that this must be the beginning of some disaster movie that would later be a Hollywood blockbuster. Typically, my own thoughts wandered down a different path, and I wondered if there was any way to get an afternoon off out of this. As it transpired, my bossknowsmeratherwellandrefusedtobelievethat natural disasters traumatise me because my great grandfather to the power of 10 was killed in Pompeii all those years ago. Upon congregating at the designated safety spot, the rumour mill began its work. Comparisons between Media House and Tongaat mall were bandied around like special brownies at Oppikoppi or contraband sweets at fat camp. We then took to the web and social media on the deviceswehadheroicallytakenthetimetofetchfrom our desks before the mad dash to relative safety. Upon consulting the online oracle, aka Google, a clusterofemployeesweretellingeveryonewithinearshot that our tremor had been the result of an earthquake in Nicaragua. Given that the distance between Durban and Nicaragua is a hefty 13 222 kilometres, I felt that if this was the case, the Americas must surely have ceased to exist altogether, and the fact that Google was still up and running blew that theory out of the water. Amarketingassistanthadtobeforciblyrestrained to keep her from running back into the building to retrieve her beloved MacBook, and the “no smoking outsidethebuilding”ruleswerewidelyfloutedinlight of the near-death experience we had just endured. I would like to conclude this column by telling you that the company gave us all a shot of Aftershock to calm our nerves. Alas, that idea, like all my “good” ideas, was shot down by management.

Israeli oppression on Gaza gets blessings of the U.S. and UK THE Israeli attack on innocent citizens and children is a crime against humanity. In their quest to protect their homeland the Israeli soldiers are destroying homes of thousands of Palestinians who are now homeless and have nowhere to go to while the US and the UK ignore their plight and supply Israel with arms and ammunition. The US is supposed to be the peace keeper of the world and yet it practises such double standards. As bombing intensifies it is difficult to expect the people of Gaza to sit by idly and accept their position while their territorial waters, electricitysupply, airspaceandlandsare

being occupied by Israel. Many secretaries of state of the US have made attempts to seek a two-state solution for these warring nations, but to date all such attempts have clearly been unsuccessful while Palestine’s resistance is being labelled as terrorism. I recommend the South African government to cut ties with Israel and send their ambassador back to Israel in protest of the killings of innocent civilians in Palestine. Inordertoovercomethisimpasse I urge the US secretary of state John Kerry to adopt a Codesa-type deal between Israel and Palestine where theirfatecanbenegotiated.Thepeo-

ple who are qualified to accompany him on such a peace- brokering plan are Thabo Mbeki, Cyril Ramaposa and Roelf Meyer. These men are experienced negotiators and I hope that the US government learns a thing or two from them about lasting peace. Twenty years ago, South Africa was faced with a similar situation and our leaders resolved the issues of this country without arms. Nelson Mandela understood that the key to democracy and a lasting solution is through peaceful negotiations and not through military action. M. Moosa Tugela Rail

ACDP holds firm on stance for Israel AS a party the ACDP believes that it is our democratic right to voice our opinion and represent our party's nationwide stance to support Israel in her right to defend her people. It is a stance that the party decided to continue supporting at our FCOP in Johannesburg last month. The ACDP, like many other parties, is grieved by the loss of life and terrible anguish for families on both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict are suffering. We are not just supporting Israel, we are supporting the peopleofPalestinewhoaresuffering under the tyranny of Hamas oppression. Our municipality represents all

citizens, including Jews, which it must be noted, are some of our biggest ratepayers and businessmen who contribute to the bread basket of this municipality. Therefore, I strongly believe that if we want to take a stance for humanity, we cannot position ourselves to just one side. The solidarity march by standing with Palestine only chose to ignore the fact that the human rights of Israelis were being violated by the constant threat of missiles being launched at it. Therefore this march cannot be considered a human rights march as stated by the anonymous business member of the community in the front

page article in the North Coast Times, 8 August . The accusation that the ACDP seekstosowdivisionwithinthecommunity is slanderous and untrue. The fact that the prominent business member chose to remain anonymous, while making this accusation, reveals a lack of decency and maturity on his or her part to take responsibility for such an accusation. The ACDP will not withdraw its support of Israel and her right to defend her people. We will continue to unashamedly stand with Israel against terrorism. Stephanie Subramanian KwaDukuza ACDP member

Ways to enhance the look of your home ARE you bored with your home the way it is? If so, it’s time for a makeover. Here are some reasons to get started on a home improvement project today. Make it sellable. You might not be thinking of selling right now, but circumstances can change, and if your house is well maintained you’ll be able to sell quicker, and for a higher price. Make it work for the future. Areyouplanningonadding to the family or growing old in your home? Make sure your home can handle your needs. You could turn your home office into a baby’s room or your garage into a craft studio – it’s all about figuring out how best to use the space you have. Make it green. With Eskom prices constantly on the rise, looking for ways to save on your utilities will certainly pay off in the long run. Sure, there might be an initial outlay to pay for a solar geyser or day-night switches for exterior lights, but these are worthwhile investments that increase the value of your home and save you money. Make it a sanctuary. If the kitchen is the heart of the home, give it some love. Consider installing a new stove, replacing the countertops or putting in new cupboards. Adding plants to a room is a great but simple way of adding charm and life to a room. Make it work for you. Your bathroom might be workable, but now is a good time to re-think the finishing touches. Get rid of that boring mirror and replace it with a framed one, or replace that old while plastic cabinet with something that has more character. Don'tforgetthelighting–lightingiseverythingand the right kind of lighting can make a difference to what you see in the mirror.

Make it right for your kids. Don't want to leave your neighbourhood because your children have friends across the road? The idea of moving and changing schools is daunting and this means that you and your family probably won't be going anywhere until school is through. So don’t wait 12 years to do some home improvement – make your home suitable for the right now. Add a slide in the back garden, or paint the children’s bedroom in fun, bright colours. Make it an eye pleaser. Don't waste another day avoiding making eye contact with those baby-pink bathroom tiles. Areyouembarrassedtoinvitefriendsoverbecause they might snigger at the outdated colours in your kitchen? Putting in new countertops is easy and doesn’t cost as much as you might think. Make it fresh. Even if your home feels almost perfect, it could probably do with a minor facelift. Paint your walls and skirting boards and the house will instantly feel fresh and clean. Make your garage, outside room, laundry room usable. Are you tired of using your garage, outside room or laundry room as one storage unit? Convert it into a living space, such as a games room, or even add a cupboard and turn it into an extra bedroom. This will add square footage and increase the value of your home. Make it smart. House hunting is time-consuming and frustrating. Instead of spending months looking for something else that’s perfect, upgrading your bathrooms and kitchen or removing that wall that's been bugging you just might be the solution. - Women24.

E spend a great deal of time in the bathroom, yet often we don’t spend time, attention, and money on it, especially if it’s the master bathroom that our guests will never see. We think a bathroom should be a happy haven, somewhere you enjoy being, just like your bedroom andlivingroom, sowe’veputtogetherafewDIYideas you could take hold of to improve the look and feel of your bathroom. >> Make a bath shelf Anyone who enjoys wallowing in a hot bath will recognise the bathtub caddy as a simple but simply ingenious idea. Woes such as “now where can I put my book where it won’t get wet...” are neatly dealt with. This easy DIY project will take you no time at all. To ensure it doesn’t slip off either side, nail two positioning blocks to the underside. The caddy could also be used as a seat, perhaps for shaving your legs or to sit on and put your feet in the water while you get the temperature just right. >> Paint the underside of your bath Painting the underside of a free-standing bath black can give a room an entirely different look, taking it from sweet and classic to bold and funky. Give your bathroom a lift by painting the underside of your bath a strong colour, or alternatively stencil a pattern, even write something, like “get on in”. It’s more personal and interesting that way, and you’re not committing to forever – when you want another change, you can just repaint it.

>> Install creative shelving and rails A wooden (and perhaps rustic) ladder can work so well as a towel rail, especially if coupled with another wood object, such as a simple shelf for holding bath products and candles. Other original ideas for replacing stock-standard towel rails include embracing the copper-pipe heated towel rail look, with its interesting and shiny knobs and dials, or making a rope towel bar, affording you something of a beach house vibe. >> Sliding barn door A barn-style sliding door could be your answer to a space issue, as it would free up the arc space that a traditional door demands. Or it may simply answer an aesthetic concern; sliding doors are not only more unusual then normal hinge doors and so add an element of interest, but wooden ones also add warmth to a room and create a welcoming look. You could even consider painting the wood, maybe yellow, to up the fun or vibrancy factor. >> Bathroom chandelier Chandeliers are not the sole property of dining rooms and bedrooms. You spend a great deal of time in the bathroom, so make it a special room like any other by installing a beautiful chandelier. Chandeliers also offer soft, flattering lighting, a must when you’re stripped down to your birthday suit. When choosing a chandelier, consider if a traditionally elaborate one would work best in your space, or else consider a more modern one. >> Lay down a carpet One can’t really call this DIY, but in keeping with the theme of revamping your bathroom we couldn’t resist including the great idea of incorporating a rug into your bathroom décor. A Persian rug is a great idea as they’re very hardy and can add some interesting detail into a room that is often too plain. If you have a built-in bath, make the carpet a central feature. Not only would a carpet change the look of your bathroom, it also has the added benefit in winter of making life warmer underfoot. - Women24.

We have lost what heaven has gained. One of the best fathers this earth had ever contained. Deep in our hearts a memory is kept of the father we loved and will never forget. The tears of excess can’t be wiped away but the tears of the heart forever stay. Our deepest wish would be today, to have you back the same sweet way. Rest in Peace “Our Hero”... till we meet again. Your presence will be highly appreciated. Sadly missed by your loving wife, Sheila, children Deon and Karen, daughter-in-law Tashni and son-in-law Denver and a host of family and friends.

HE third-generation Kia Sorento will be unveiled in Korea next month, featuring bold, swept-back exterior styling, a premium interior look and luxury features. The new model sports a lower roofline, higher beltline, a more muscular stance and deeply sculpted body surfaces. Together with a larger, more upright “tiger-nose” grille, these design changes have raised the the bar on sophistication and style. The cabin will also create a new standard of luxury in its segment, thanks to a modern, wrap-around dashboard, high quality soft-touch materials and a range of advanced on-board technologies. Interior styling was led by the brand’s design team in Frankfurt, Germany, which cited the finest modern

Swiss watches as a key influence during the design phase. The smoothly contoured cabin features softtouch materials, leather and stitching, as well as Kia’s latest human-machine interface. A large infotainment screen dominates the centre of the dashboard, which employs long, flowing shapes to envelop the driver and front passenger and emphasise the width and space of the large cabin. Gledhow snatch thrilling 7-6 win WEEKLY REPORTER R &B GLEDHOW Darts Club snatched a thrilling 7-6 win against Isithebe Paints in a Distell Richelieu-sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association League game at the Taste of India Restaurant in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. Isithebe came into the game in high spirits on Wednesday night after toppling the more fancied Nevil’s Auto outfit a fortnight ago and expected to pick up maximum points against Gledhow in the hope of consolidating their position at the top of the log table. But, the high-riding Isithebe lads were brought down to earth after their disappointing 7-6 defeat. The match was evenly contested with both teams winning two games each in the team (1001 and 801) matches. Gledhow stunned their more experienced rivals after notching up a hattrick of victories in the three doubles matches to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Darrel Shanmagum and Neeran Somnath outwitted Vinesh Geanballey and Jerry Govender in the opening

doubles match. Preggie Appadora and Rajesh Parasaram trounced Jerry Arunachellam and Vishalin Parmasivan before Kevin Pillay and Ashley Harripersaad completed the hat-trick after defeating Asogan Latshoomanan and Rajen Pillay in the final doubles match of the evening. Shanmagum proved too classy for Geanballey in the opening singles match to extend Gledhow’s lead (6-2). Trailing 2-6, Isithebe miraculously chewed away the deficit to level the scores at 6-6 heading into the crucial

league decider (final match). After their dismal performance in the doubles matches, Govender, Parmasivan, Arunachellam and Latshoomanan made amends in the singles matches to give Isithebe a lifeline (6-6). All eyes were on Harripersaad and Rajen Pillay in the final singles match of the evening and despite the vociferous support for Pillay by the Isithebe lads, Harripersaad held his nerve at the death to guide Gledhow to a memorable 7-6 win. Meanwhile, Gledhow United and Nevil’s Auto failed to honour their league fixture on Wednesday night. SHRAM Primary proved its dominance in primary schools volleyball after walloping their opponents to become KwaDukuza champions in the U13 tournament hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association in conjunction with the Department of Education and Department of Sports and Recreation. In the boys’ U13 competition, Ashram trounced New Guelderland Primary 15-6; 15-4, and followed it up with a comprehensive 25-4; 25-10 win against KwaDukuza Primary to book their place in the final. Manor Primary beat Dawnview 2512; 25-21 to set up a mouth-watering final against Ashram. But, the Manor lads (under the guidance of coach Thula Somduth) suffered stage-fright slumping to a 25-8 win the first set. The Manor lads came back strongly in the second set, but Ashram (under

the guidance of coaches Pragash Naicker and Sagie Pillay) held onto a well-deserved 25-21 win to become KwaDukuza champions. The Ashram girls emulated the feat of their male counterparts, hammering Manor Primary 25-3; 25-6 before snatching a thrilling 25-15; 25-22 win against KwaDukuza Primary to notch up an impressive double victory celebration. The Ashram boys and girls will represent KwaDukuza in the Ilembe Under-13Volleyball Championship next month (date and venue to be confirmed). In the secondary schools U17 tournament on Friday at the association courts, Manor Secondary lads trounced Shakaskraal Secondary 15-2 in the opening set. Shakaskraal, who were slow off the starting blocks, stunned their more fanciedrivalswinningthenexttwosets convincingly to register a fluent 2-1 to

be crowned KwaDukuza U17 champions. The Manor Secondary girls made amends for the disappointing performance of their male counterparts after beating Shakaskraal in straight sets (2-0) in the final. Shakaskraal U17 boys and Manor Secondary U17 girls are fancied to emerge Ilembe champions and will represent the Ilembe District in the KwaZulu-Natal Volleyball Championship later in the year. In other volleyball news, Darnall United avenged their KDSA Social League first-round defeat at the hands of Teachers Style with a comprehensive 2-0 (25-23; 25-19) win at the association courts on Thursday night. The victory elevated Darnall to second spot on the log standing. Sunbrook leapfrogged to the top of the log table with a fluent 25-7; 25-13 win against Manor Old Boys. Devan Moonsamy’s Sunbrook outfit have been firing on all cylinders since the start of the 2014 season and are expected to take a power of beating in their quest for league honours. There was a huge score for former league champions, KSST who lost the opening set against Randsons. But, Syd Kistan’s charges came back strongly to record a hard-earned 2-1 win to stay in the race for league honours. Grove End consolidated their position at the summit of the log table with a 2-0 win against Warriors Sport. A bumper crowd is expected at the volleyball courts tomorrow (Thursday) to witness explosive action in the top-ofthe-table clash between Grove End and KSST at 7pm. The Nandos-sponsored women’s volleyball tournament will take place on Friday, 22 August at 6pm. Entry is free. Medals and Nandos will be given to all participants.
