ORTH COAST residents are left wondering if they will have a festive season with no lights or water after getting poor answers from authorities at a public meeting at Braeside on Thursday night. Representatives from Kwadukuza Municipality, iLembe Municipality, bulksupplierUmgeniWater, ratepayers’ associations, councillors and the public attended to discuss water and electricity issues. With stage two water restrictions in place since September, traffic jams electricity outages and now load

shedding, residents are concerned about the town’s short and long-term future. At the meeting Sembcorp Siza water managing director Shyam Misra repeated that the situation was dire and if water is not saved the Hazelmere Dam, which supplies the area, could be dry by January or February 2015. “The situation is a lot more severe than we realise. We urge residents to save water as we all need it for survival,” said Misra.

HE issue of rampant crime in the KwaDukuza CBD prompted the KwaDukuza Retailer's Association (KRA) to hold a meeting with the local SAPS and the municipal Crime Prevention Unit (KDM CPU) on Thursday, 6 November. Fed up business owners decided that it was time to work together to put an end to crime in the town as their businesses are being seriously affected. Salim Tootla, speaking on behalf of the KRA, said: “Crime has reached alarming proportions with many retailers recently having been subject to brazen, armed robberies and theft. We would like the SAPS to work co-operatively with KDM Crime Prevention to effectively combat crime in the CBD.” The KRA committee expressed the vulnerability of businesses to crime and stressed the importance of increased police visibility and more foot patrols. He said this week a 30% reduction is water use will be implemented, up from the until now 20%. He said the area uses about 11 million litres per day, but this jumpstoabout18millionintheChristmas week. Umgeni Water corporate stakeholder manager Shami Harichunder said the dam is about 44% full, but about 15% of this is silt and not useable. When queried about the viablilty of a desalination plant, Harichunder said this is still “a long time away”.

Residents queried why a phased plan toraisetheHazelmerewallshadnotbeen done after being on the cards since about 2007. Authorities said this was a Department of Water and Sanitation project. The public also raised the issue of water being lost due to poor infrastructure in some areas in iLembe. Harichunder said only five percent was being lost, which is in line with international standards. Dolphin Coast Conservancy chair Di Jones said this may be true for the Siza Water areas, but that documentation she had attained at a recent water conference revealed about 37% was being lost in some areas, mostly due to poor infrastructure. iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe said he will be approaching province this week to attain funding allocated to infrastructure to assist the cause. “Desalination may have to be fast-tracked, and we are also lookingintoaboutfiverawwaterstorage

capacities,” said Mdabe. A resident contested a recent announcement by Siza which stated that the town would be fined if water restrictions were not adhered to. Misra said accounts would be scrutinised and individuals fined. He said accommodation facilities needtoregisterwithSizasoasnottoincur exorbitant costs in season. When asked about bore holes in residences, Misra said this was an option, but permission would need to be granted by DWA. Other than promoting an awareness campaign, authorities did not mention a worse-case scenario plan for the festive season. KwaDukuza electrical department’s Nick Hall said as of last week the area is now on Eskom’s load-shedding schedule, block 15, rather than the municipality’s. This to allow for weekend shedding when the grid is under pressure. He said last Thursday’s full-day outage was due to upgrading of local infrastructure. Hall said local substations, the 10mva Shaka’s Rock station working at 14mva are severely overloaded. He said the new Sheffield station would not be complete for at least six months. “The growth in the area has been phenomenal and it has been difficult to keep up. About 10 years ago the load growth was 72mva, now it is 120mva,” said Hall. DOCRRA’s Barbara Shingler asked what the plan was for the season, to which Hall said it was “really a challenge”. He later explained the municipality’s geyser rotational system would help to prevent unplanned outages and load shedding, but said the public had not been co-operating. “We have installed about 8 200, but need an extra 3 300 to be effective,” said Hall. DOCRRA chairman Louis Luyt said it seemed“Ballitoisslowly grinding to a halt”. He said he would be addressing the lack of a planning for December with council. “There is no short, medium and long-term plan as to how the region should develop. We are on the brink of crumbling if something is not done,” said Luyt. He said people need to work together to make the town viable.

AN accused drug peddler was caught ‘red handed’ and was arrested by NForce Security at a local mosque on Sunday. NForce director Nitesh Arjun arrested Mohammed Bux for attempting to sell whoonga at the mosque. Arjun said he received information from members of the public while conducting an undercover investigation about a suspected drug peddler conducting his “business” at the local mosque. “My reaction team and I searched the area and found the suspect on the mosque premises. He attempted to escape through the back, however, we managed to apprehend him. “Upon searching him we found a large quantity of whoonga hidden in his pants.” He was then handed over to the

KwaDukuza SAPS. Bux appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning on a charge of drug possession and was remanded in custody until 17 November.

OR many years the Monkeytown informal settlement dwellers have had to relieve themselves in a neighbouring bush and use two communal taps for water to wash, clean, drink and prepare meals. However, these Shakaville residents will no longer have to experience the stench and flies, waiting in long lines for water, thanks to a donation of communal toilets with sinks and showers made by an iLembe District Municipality service provider. Esor Construction donated four container toilets and two showers for males and three toilets and two

showers for females both with washing basins made out of cement at the back. These were officially handed over tothecommunitylastThursday,6November. iLembe deputy Mayor Dolly Shandu, the chairperson of the Infrastructure Portfolio Committee councillor Jabulani Zondo, Esor director Des Anamalay and site manager Rowland Roopnarian handed over the keys to the ward councillor Pinky Mdletshe-Mbambo and the ward committee. Shandu thanked Esor Construction for restoring the dignity of the people in Monkeytown. “We really appreciate it. Thank you very much! “We wish you can take this project to other wards and even other local municipalities in this district. “We have so many slums in Mandeni in particular,” she said. Anamalay said Esor Contsructionswasproudtobepartoftheinitiative and said this was a start. “This confirms the desperate high need for quality secure lifestyle homes from KwaDukuza residents,” said BonkeBashe, property sales consultant for Simsi. Zandile Mkhabela and Sibongile Mkhumbuzi (pictured below), two young professional residents of KwaDukuzu each bought a three-bedroom apartment at Rocky Park on Saturday.

HE Rocky Park apartments at Ward 19 KwaDukuza are selling fast. “The response from the public to our advertisements has been very good, with over 150 phone calls and many emails being received from interested potential buyers just on Wednesday alone last week. “The phone calls and emails have continued coming in numbers daily.

Province has tight plan for festive season safety KWAZULU-NATAL has hatched a tight security plan to safeguard the province during and after the busy festive season. The plan involves the deployment of well over 20 000 security personnel, including crime intelligence, tactical response teams and backed up by the air wing. Part of this plan is already in action, by providing security to those writing matric examinations in the province. It will run until the reopening of schools in January 2015. This plan was tabled at the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cabinet Security Cluster meeting, chaired by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison,WilliesMchunu.Theplan was approved by the JCPS Cluster and will now be tabled at the provincial cabinet. Theplanisbroadlyinformed by the understanding that the province is poised to see an influx of thousands of tourists into the province, high traffic volumes with thousands of cashflushed people descending into provincial malls. The plan also notes that hundreds of thousands of migrant

workers would be returning home with the likely emergence of conflict. Among others, the plan will see the manning of road blocks toensurethesafetyofthepeople of the province and the visitors during this busy period, cordon and search operations, seizure of stolen property, recovery illegal firearms and drugs. Crime prevention strategies that include the cordoning and searching operations will be conducted around the province to respond to possible cash in transit robberies, ATM bombings, rural safety, crimes that are directed at farmers and stock theft. It also includes mobilising the community against criminality. "We are satisfied that all the efforts have been made to ensure that KwaZulu-Natal people have a safe and incident free festive season. “We, however, call on the people to be alert, cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious incident to the police immediately. The reality is that safety and security is our collective responsibility," said Mchunu.

twice a year by the bursary committee. Facing disappointment head-on

CHRISTA VAN DER WALT

W

E have all had to deal with disappointment sometime in our lives. Whether it was that perfect job you applied for and didn’t get, or the promotion you expected which didn’t materialise, or simply a beautiful tray of seedlings you planted that were eaten by an army of snails. As hard as it is for adults to work through a disappointment, it is much harder to see your child struggling to deal with it. To hear her or him cry “but mom it is not fair”. We all had to learn the harsh lesson that life is certainly not fair, and it is a difficult one that is often repeated a few times throughout one’s life. Yet, it is possible to grow despite harsh blows, because it is not in the disappoint-

mentthatonelearnsalesson, butintheway we handle it. Do you go sit in your bedroom andsulkforaweek, ordoyoustraightenyour back with a stern resolve to move on? One of my biggest disappointments a few years ago was realising that a person whom I called a friend for many years, told me so many lies that it was difficult to even find a shred of truth in her demeanour. When I caught her out in a blatant lie, I spent a long time contemplating our “friendship” and realised that final lie was preceded by others. I hate being taken advantage of, and I often go rather far out my way to help people, whether they are close friends or not. But once bitten, forever shy. So what did I do with that disappointment? Now, I tend not to trust people easily. And after that little episode, my circle of friends shrunk a little more, to the point where I realised how few people in life one can truly call “friends”. There are many acquaintances, several mates and a large group of people that I enjoyspendingtimewith.Butthehandfulthat I call my friends have come a long way with me and have earned the status.

Questions about department offices IT is very unfortunate that Mbuyiseni Mathonsi of Sadtu has been rewarded with a post that pays three times more than what he was getting as a principal. Sadtu did not do anything to force the iLembe Education District to re-locate from Durban to Stanger. There are reasons for the delay in response toquestionsasked-mostofficialsliveinDurban,relocation fee per individual is R30 000 and the question of suitability of the office in Stanger comes into play. The Department of Basic Education (DOBE) must check if beneficiaries of a “relocation fee” did actually relocate to Stanger. The National Union of Teachers (Natu) and parents must write to the Public Protector and Auditor-General to investigate how much a month DOBE has been paying for the new offices in Stanger while they aren’t being used. I also ask the media to request all financial transactions between the owner of the building and Write to the Editor - Email: stangerweek lynews@gmail.com or fax: 032 552 3985. Butbacktodisappointmentsandhowto deal with them. My better half sent me an article about the Finnish armed forces who dealt with an overwhelming Russian onslaught at the start of World War 2. Their small army battled and beat the massive Russian wave, relying on a concept thathasbeenpartofFinnishcultureforhundreds of years: Sisu. The article explains that Sisu is a word that has no direct translation, but it refers to the idea of continuing to act even in the face of repeated failures and extreme odds. It is a way of living life by displaying perseverance even when you have reached the end of your mental and physical capacities. And therein, I think, lies the secret to dealing with challenges or even disappointments. A good friend always says “it is time to pull up your big girl broeks and get on with life”. It is a waste of time to mull over the disappointment. No, it is not easy to simply shrug it off either, but to spend weeks agonising over it is useless. Rather find the lesson, resolve not to bang your head against that particular door again and actively search for the positive in any situation.

Treasury. Natu must also get the “lease agreement” which will reveal that taxpayers paid exorbitantly for offices which DOBE is not occupying. I urge the director of ILembe Education District to respond to this letter and reveal what she knows about rental payments of unoccupied offices. Pam Woodraj

Love and miss you dearest

Your loving wife Sundree RAJMANYAH HANSRAJ 02/10/1933 - 04/11/2014 Once upon a time an angel held my hand, She wiped away my tears and helped me understand. Our time on earth is brief, there’s lessons to be learned, Each precious day God gives us another page is turned. Every chapter is full of memories, times of joy and tears, Triumphs and defeats, through every passing year. She loved us unconditionally, always by our side, When no one else would listen, in her we could confide. With gentle words of wisdom she led us on our way, Down the path of righteousness if ever we did stray. She saw the light in everyone and gave with no regrets, Always from her heart let us not forget. Angels come in many forms, for me it is my mother, With love I cannot say in words there’ll never be another. Thank you Ma for all your love and affection that you have showered upon us for so many years. We love and miss you forever and always...

The 13th day ceremony of our beloved mother, the late, Rajmanyah Hansraj, wife of the late Hansraj Bissumber, shall take place on Tuesday, the 18th of November 2014, 10.30 am at her late residence Grouteville, Etete. Sadly missed by your loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons- and daugters-in-law and a host of family and friends. A personal invitation to family and friends.

Vodacom and Samsun created what they called “a next-generation police car” which uses fixed and mobile networks and the latest hardware to support the South African Police Service. Each future police car could be fitted with cameras capable of number plate recognition. Connectivity is provided by LTE and 3G technology and information gathered by the cameras could be cross-referenced with databases such as those administered by the Department of Transport and the Department of Home Affairs. rallied back strongly after trailing 13-17 before going down 23-25. They stormed back into contention after winning the second set 25-22 to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a 3rd and decisive set. Style, spearheadedbyAlvinMoonsamy threw everything at their opponents to eke out a hard fought 15-12 win. Tuesday’s victory lifted the spirits of the Style lads who arrived at the courts on Thursday night with a chip on their shoul-

ders. Style lost the opening set (25-23), but turned on the heat with a hard fought 25-23 win in the second set. Style outclassed their rivals, holding a massive 5-point cushion (8-3) at the changes of sides. But, too many unforced errors saw Style shoot themselves in the foot which resulted in their 13-15 demise. Meanwhile,ManorOldBoysnotchedup their maiden league victory on Tuesday night after beating the more fancied Virgo outfit 2-1 (25-23; 23-25; 15-9). Sunbrook made amends for their de-

feat against Style on Tuesday night after beating Cool Leaders 2-1 (20-25; 25-18; 15-7) on Thursday night. It was a disappointing week for former league champions, KSST Volleyball Club. On Tuesday night they suffered a straight set (20-25; 22-25) defeat at the hands of defending champions Grove End in the EZE’S Electrical Competitive League. Their woes continued on Thursday night when they slumped to a humiliating 20-25; 13-25 defeat to Randsons. Their back-to-back league losses have caused a major dent in their hopes of re-

AN-of-the-match, Gerhard Nagiah inspired Morningside to an emphatic 117-runs victory against Magnum in The Tax Company-sponsored Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 League game played at the Country Club Ground on Saturday. Morningside won the toss and immediately elected to make first use of the batting strip. Their decision to bat first was vindicated after openers Nagiah and Levan Moodaly put on a splendid century (103) opening partnership. Nagiah was in devastating form with the bat, racing to his half-century (50 not out) in the 10th over. Moodaly (32) smashed five fours before being clean bowled by G. Govender. Preshen Rampersad joined Nagiah at the crease and this pair kept the score-board ticking. Rampersad (46) fell four-runs short of a well deserved half-century before being dismissed by Liam Luke.

United off to a winning start WEEKLY REPORTER MOVERS United kicked off their campaign in the SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League with a 4-1 routing ofTornadoattheRecreationGroundonSaturday. Playing against the wind in the first half, United were caught on the counter-attack in the 15th minute after Sakhile Msimango floated a long ball to the unmarked Ayanda Dube, who headed powerfully past the keeper to give Tornado a 1-0 lead. Tornado could have doubled their advantage minutes later after Mthobisi Gu-

mede beat his marker on the left flank, but instead of passing the ball to the unmarked Msimango in the box, he selfishly tried to score from an acute angle, hitting the sidenetting. In the 25th minute Sphesihle Mpunzana wasted a golden opportunity of snatching an equalizer. With only the goalkeeper to beat, he ballooned the ball skywards. Minutes later United’s Cedric Banda was guilty of wayward shooting after missing the target from close range. Barely minutes before half-time there was some neat exchange of passes by brothers Akhona and Spheshile Mpunzana Movers United were over the moon after kicking off their campaign in the SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association (KLFA) Premier League with a 4-1 routing of Tornado at the Recreation Ground. Chasing 204 runs for victory (at a rate of 10,15 runs per over) Morningside were bundled out for a paltry 86 runs in the 19th over. S. United enjoyed territorial advantage at the start of the second half and barely 10 minutes later Khethani Manzini gave United the lead (2-1) for the first time in the match. In the 65th minute Sakhile Skhakhane capitalized on a defence error to extend United’s lead (3-1). Man-of-the-match Akhona volleyed the ball past the Tornado keeper after latching onto a precision-timed cross from Mduduzi in the 70th minute to give United a dream start (4-1) to their league campaign. A delighted United coach Lindokuhle Mthethwa was ecstatic with the performance of his charges. Mthethwa said: “The boys showed character in the opening game oftheseasonanddespitetrailingearlyinthe match they showed determination and grit and went on to win comfortably. “Iwasimpressedwiththeneatexchange of passes in the centre of the park and let’s hopetheboysshowthesamekindoftenacity to win throughout the season.” In an earlier game Young Lions and Sun City failed to impress in their drab, goalless draw.
