Glendale farm attack one killed >> Victim played dead to save her life JYOTHI LALDAS

A

57-YEAR-old woman, who was shot during a farm attack, survived after pretending to be dead while lying against the body of her dead husband. Sixty-two-year-old Andy Rajpaul and his wife Kamla, both employees at the Stanger Training Centre, were leaving their Glendale home on Monday morning in a Nissan 1400 bakkie when they were attacked by two balaclava-clad males.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) head Prem Balram, the suspects opened fire on the vehicle shooting Rajpaul several times. "He then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an abandoned building on the farm. His wife, who was also shot, lay next to her bleeding husband. The suspects believed she was also dead due to her being covered in her husband’s blood. They then fled the scene without taking any valuables. “Two farm workers, who were get-

ting into the bakkie at the time of the incident, fled the scene and were unharmed." Balram said Kamla escaped death as her handbag had shielded her from several 9mm rounds. "She however, sustained a bullet wound and was rushed to a private hospital." Balram said that Reaction Unit South Africa werecalledouttosearch the vast area with a helicopter. "At 6:30am the Rusa helicopter lifted off from Verulam and searched

the Glendale area for the suspects. "Assistancetobothvictimswasdelayed as the female lay in shock for over an hour next to her husband before using her cellphone to call for help. The victims are relatives of Verulam-basedpoliceofficerWarrantOfficer P. Indarjee." It was established that Rajpaul left early that morning to pick up a bus used to transport children with special needs to the school. "He was in possession of a 9mm pistol, which he could not use due to

the surprise attack. “Eight spent 9mm cartridges were found at the scene and it is believed that several more rounds were fired at the victim’s vehicle," said Balram. Anyone with information regarding the murder is urged to contact Warrant Officer Sugen Raman of the Stanger Serious and Violent Crimes Unit on 083 553 3233 or Reaction Unit South Africa on 086 123 4333. A reward is being offered for informationleadingtothearrestofthesuspects.

Upgrading homes, upgrading lives >> KZN premier hands over R274 million ‘slum clearance’ housing projects in Groutville MERVYN KRISHNA

D

EALING yet another blow to the indignity and the squalid conditions associated with living in an informal settlement, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu marked his 100 days in office with the hand-over of houses to Groutville residents. The homes are part of a R274 million informal settlement upgrade at two housing projects which were launched on Friday. Mchunu was accompanied by Human Settlement and Public Works MEC Ravi Pillay and KwaDukuza Municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu. The Groutville Priority 2 Informal Settlement Upgrade Project in Ward 11’s eTsheni and Njekani areas of Groutville will see a yield of almost 2 000 units, while the Groutville

must celebrate the contribution of the people of KwaZulu-Natal from all races towards socio-economic development. “As KZN we have developed our own provincial growth development which puts emphasis on ensuring a quality of life for our people. We can proclaim without any doubt that we still care about the implementation of the vision of Inkosi Albert Luthuli.” Pillay told the Weekly that this project is located within the premier’s 100-day target he had set. “Immediately after we took office in May this year, he basically cracked the whip and said these are the targets we had set, [so] roll up your sleeves and get things moving. “There was weekly monitoring of the progress to meet the 100-day target which was met long before time,” said Pillay.

Priority 5 in Ward 9’s Mnyundwini area will see a yield of 1 000 units. Both projects are set to benefit 3 000 people who have been living in shacks with no proper sanitation, water or electricity. The two priority projects will have electricity, water and sanitation thus restoring the dignity of the beneficiaries. The project is due to be completed in July 2015. The premier and his delegation handed over two houses with furniture and groceries during the visit. “We are here to fulfil your aspirations because you voted for a government that listens and delivers. This is what Inkosi Luthuli fought for until his untimely death. “Importantly, in September as Heritage Month, we get the opportunity to strengthen the solidarity amongthepeopleofthisprovince. We

Four arrested during Ashville service delivery protest JYOTHI LALDAS FOUR people were arrested and charged with public violence on Monday after they stoned police stationed in Ashville during a service delivery protest. Community members of Ashville and surrounding areas burnt tyres and trees, stoned passers-by and police and blocked roads with garbage and skips demanding proper service delivery from the KwaDukuza Local and iLembe District Municipalities. Their demands included water, electricity and proper sanitation. The scene became violent and the public policing unit had to be brought in to calm the situation. One officer was struck on the forehead with a stone and had to be taken to Alberlito Hospital for treatment. Protesters near Ashville Primary also attempted to attack teachers forcing them to shut down and leave school. According to one teacher, the pupils at

Sadtu threatens to ‘bring education to a standstill’

>> ‘We have given them ample time to apply their minds and resolve the issues, but to no avail’ MERVYN KRISHNA

T

HE South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has embarked on rolling mass action that will “bring education in the iLembe District to a standstill”, demanding the resolution of 20 grievances. These include the removal of district education manager Caroline Velakazi and Maphumulo circuit managers EB Gcabashe and T. Ntuli. At a mass meeting on Monday at Sadtu Park, Sadtu regional secretary Mthokozisi Mpunzana said since Velakazi assumed her duties, there has been a decline in proactive rela-

tions with the district she is “sup- tor to chair them on her behalf. We view such conduct as abdication of posed to manage”. “Her conduct of treating our union duties. She reverses DTT decisions like her administration desk has been whenever there are some which she does not feel stomached to comfortable the extreme “HER CONDUCT OF with. limit, we [as] “She failed Sadtu are no TREATING OUR UNION LIKE dismally to longer prepared to be illHER ADMINISTRATION DESK convene a single district treated as if we HAS BEEN STOMACHED TO principal’s are still under meeting. apartheid. THE EXTREME LIMIT” “Velakazi “Velakazi has never put has never attended a single district task team in place an induction programme for (DTT) meeting, but instead sends the newly appointed and promoted edudistrict human resources co-ordina- cation workers under her district,

hence we have a litany of education workers and Sadtu members in particular, misconducting themselves and getting investigated, charged, tried and harshly sanctioned by the very office that she occupies.” ThesecretarysaidVelakazicolluded with circuit managers who are “her friends and cronies” to make “irregular appointments of educators, in particular school principals”. “Velakazi appointed a Gingindlovu circuit manager to co-ordinate KwaDukuza core management criteria and used him as her guillotine to open unfounded investigations against some members, leaders and former leaders of Sadtu,” said Mpun-

zana. Velakzai was also criticised for abusingherofficepowersbystopping the St. Christopher Primary post-selection process for a principal during the day of shortlisting. “She misrepresented the head of department’s office by telling Sadtu that she acted upon the instruction from the HOD, and that was in violationofHRMCircularno.15/2014procedure manual. “Velakazi and the displaced circuit manager, Mr Msane, attended a governing body meeting of Whebede School and instructed that meeting to co-opt two principals into their interviewing committee whose task was to conduct a principalship postselection process and such act amount to post-fixing,” the secretary said. The meeting resolved to intensify the mass action over the next few days, and to follow this up with a strike that would “bring education to a standstill” if the department did not meet their demands. “We have given them ample time to apply their minds and resolve the issues, but to no avail,” she said.

A little wisdom needed

JONATHAN ERASMUS

I

HAVE always wanted to write satire, simply to provide comic relief for the Average Joe that doesn’t involve alcohol or fantasies about roundhouse kicking his boss. But I can’t write satire, which is why my wife had to offer up the introductory sentence. Not being Devastatingly Witty or MonumentallyIntellectualleavesmein therather unenviable position of having to write something serious, abiding by the rules and structure, and all the while having to watch that I don’t thump into the often hidden rocks of libel and false facts. Breaking rules comes with consequences, andinanewsroom, those consequences

often involve a haggard sub-editor who moans at you for incorrect grammar and tense usage, as if these things are key to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. But then again, as people who have very little to lose — invariably the very rich or the very poor — like saying, rules are meant to be broken, because it is then that we discover something about ourselves and each other. The recent turbulence in Parliament is a case in point. I do not sit in the EFF or Julius Malema fan seats; I find the party and the man to be fascist in nature and morally lacking in practice. Led by Malema, EFF members chanted “pay back the money” during a questionand-answersessionwiththepresidentafter he sidestepped yet another Nkandla question. The ANC-led government has subsequently moved to suspend the EFF. To show that it was in control of Parliament, ANC officials called in the minister of defence, who told the packed newsroom: “We are the last line of defence”.

This would be understandable if Cape Town had a reputation as a meeting point for terrorists and separatists who walk the streets with RPGs. In reality, the ANC overreacted. And it did so to an embarrassing degree. By suspending the EFF, the government will be creating a martyr. A simple warning would have driven the point home; a penalty on their salaries would have been better. The EFF members may have spoken out of turn and disrupted the rules of the house, but they did not threaten or hurt anyone physically. Pride, however, took a knock. But the rule breaking was important. Parliamentis, intheory, aplaceofaccountability. Accountability involves answering questions. It is a place of robust debate, where the feelings of the people — through their elected representatives — can be heard. The ANC, for all it has done for this great nation, could have handled the situation differently had it put more weight on wisdom and less on ego. In the hearts and minds of us Average Joes, two things count — the facts and the perceived facts. Perception tends to hold more water. Zuma may have led us successfully into one oftheworld’sstrongest economic blocs through Brics, but for someone who we are told is a keen strategist, he continues to sully the national chessboard. He has charged his queen forward, leaving his king exposed, when all he needed to do was play the angle with his knight and build awall with his pawns. Suspending the EFF may be “check”, but playing the end game in the game of kings and queens is what counts. Similarly, the ANC’s attack on the public protector and the DA reveals a party that is losing control of public perception. The big question is why. A party that enjoys such a large majority, which has dominated the polls and shows very little chance of losing power any time soon, is behaving as if it has a margin so small that the reactionary approach is best. The ANC needs better strategists. Its internal media machine is failing. Without rethinking how it is being perceived, the ANC will need neither fine intellectuals nor satirists to rip it to shreds. Its onceardent followers are doing that already.

Gambling licence for The Ritz MUSLIMS view gambling as a self-destructive vice that does colossal harm to society. It gives false hope to people by portraying an escape from poverty and difficulty, to that of affluence and luxury but it instead plunges them into debt and deeper poverty. The social impact of gambling can range from productivity loss, bankruptcy, suicide, crime, divorce and rehabilitation costs. It is never confined to the gambler but adversely affects spouses, children and others. Pathological gambling is a progressive disease that devastates all involved. Studies have found a strong correlation between greater availability of gambling and pathological gambling, hence our aversion to the request of an increase in machines at The Ritz. The only people that benefit from gambling are the operators. With gambling, money from the poor is being relocated to the pockets of the rich. Needless to say, there is a positive correlation between crime and gambling. Gambling addicts resort to criminal activities to finance their habit. Our society definitely does not need to add fuel to an already roaring fire of crime. Gambling accounts for a huge slice of household expenditure. Problem gambling among the elderly eatssteadilyattheirretirementsavings, moneyupon which they are dependant. We urge the KwaDukuza Municipality, people of influence and all other concerned citizens to please mobilise and oppose this impending disaster. As Dr James Doughney said a couple of years ago at a gambling conference: "The harm is more unjust, more unconscionable, because government have a duty to protect." We once again would like to confirm that we the KSSMC strongly oppose the amendment for The Ritz to have a license to increase its number of gambling machines. We also request that all concerned members of the public to please send a letter of objection to the municipal manager on municipalM@kwaduku za.gov.za and Grand Gaming on vchellan@king domslots.co.za Ismail Olla Secretary KSSMC

are anything to go by the Crow team are in for another busy baby season. Over the past three weeks alone, more than 130 sick, injured and orphaned animals have been admitted to our centre, including several of our first spring babies that have, among other things, fallen victim to the strong winds we have recently experienced in Durban. In addition to gearing up for baby season, the Crow team have also had their hands full with final preparations for the release of the over 350 animals that are currently at our centre. Many of these animals have remained in the safety of our care throughout the long winter months and are now ready to go to their respective new homes in the wild.

URPOSEFUL in its execution as much as it is striking to look at, design elements have also been employed to enhance aerodynamics, the new QASHQAI featuring a drag coefficient of just 0.33 - thanks to clever features like a flat underbelly and a roof spoiler with winglets. Theall-newinterior,whichisbolsteredbythethreecoreelements of comfort, connectivity and control, is where the biggest leap in quality and feel has been achieved, with the use of premium quality materials culminating in a chic interior which creates a wonderful driving environment. The ergonomic and fuss-free layout ensures ease of use, with key touch points and surfaces designed to enhance the sensory experience and provide long-term durability. Suspension in the new QASHQAI is a MacPherson strut design with a rigid-mounting mini sub-frame up front and an independent multi-link design at the rear, with advanced doublepiston shock absorbers to provide faultless damping at both ends of the dynamic range. The two-channel damping system features a conventional channel which takes care of low-frequency bumps on rougher roads, with an additional channel to deal with smaller, high-frequency bumps found on smoother roads. Theresultisacarwhichdeliversasmoothandrefined ride whatever the road surface. Dynamicsarefurtherenhancedbythecompletely new Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), standard across the range. Tuned with a new control logic that delivers a more natural driving experience, EPASreturnsa5%reductioninoverallsteeringration for better responsiveness. The caster trail of the front suspension has also been lengthened to improve straight line stability as well as create a more positive self-centring action, resulting in better feel through the steering wheel. The EPAS system is also adjustableaccordingtodriverpreference, allowingforlighter or heavier feel depending on the driving environment and the driver's mood. In Normal mode, EPAS offers light responses perfectly suited to low-speed manoeuvring and effortless cruising, while in Sport mode, a heavier feel requiring more effort to turn the wheel and increased steering feel enhances sportiness. The single petrol engine offering comes in the form of an all-new 1.2-litre direct injection turbochargedmill, whichdefiesitssmallcapacitywithample power and torque outputs. Producing 85 kW at 4500 rpm and 190 Nm at just 2000 rpm, the two new *QASHQAI 1.2T* models - available in Visia and Acenta trim levels - are a force majeure in the segment. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox in both derivatives, power is transferred easily to the front wheels, making for comfortable and economical driving. Headlining the charge on improved fuel economy and emissions, diesel engines make up the rest of the powertrain line-up for the new Nissan QASHQAI range. Familiar to anyone who enjoyed the most frugal derivative in the original QASHQAI range, the new QASHQAI 1.5dCi Acenta model features the latest evolutionoftheworld-class1.5-litrecommonrailtur-

bocharged diesel engine, which produces 81 kW at 4000 rpm and abundant torque of 260 Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm. Quieter and with reduced vibration, the motor is also lighter than before. Innovative and exciting, class-leading technology on all models also includes Chassis Control, comprising Active Trace Control and Active Ride Control. Active Trace Control complements VDC at lower speeds by applying specific braking force to each wheel to correct the course of the QASHQAI during cornering, enabling a more dynamic feel without interfering with the driving experience. Active Ride Control goes even further to enhance the comfortable ride with flatter body control by applying subtle braking to individual wheels when driving over undulating surfaces. The smartest safety technology - in the form of the Nissan Around View Monitor - is available as an option on all derivatives except the QASHQAI 1.2T Visia. Around View Monitor incorporates four exterior cameras - mounted on the nose, tailgate and under each door mirror - to create a 'helicopter view' of the new QASHQAI. SHTON College advanced to the final of the Top Schools Cricket Tournament (hosted by Ilembe Primary Schools Cricket Association) after beating Manor Primary by 7wickets in the semi-final played at Manor on Wednesday. The visitors won the toss and elected to field first. Ashton unsettled the home team after the 13-year-old Pieter Steenkamp clean bowled Shahid for a duck in the fourth delivery of the match. Despite the early setback, Akhil Singh and Jadyn Naidoo weathered the storm, taking the tally to 24 before Naidoo (10) became Steenkamp’s second victim. Ilembe under 13 cap Jaden Pillay joined Singh at the crease and the home team were hoping for them to take the tally to 50-mark, but Pillay (2) was adjudged LBW to a Chad Walters delivery. Manor skipper Suhail Mitha (1) top edged spinner Sayuren Thotha’s delivery, offering a simple catch to wicketkeeper Callum Osborne. Singh smashed his fourth bound-

ary, taking his tally to 17 before being controversially adjudged LBW to a Walters delivery in the 12th over. Sandiso Khelisiwa (8) smashed two brilliant cover-drives before being clean bowled by Rubin. Ashton spinner, Thotha spun a web around Ashveer Maharaj and Jared Tikaram dismissing both batsmen for a duck. Ricard Singh battled gamely hitting a single boundary in his seven runs contribution before being clean bowled by Matt McCarter. McCarter claimed his second victim after dismissing Jaden Perumal for a duck. The home team were bundled out for 71 runs in the 18th over. Spinner Thotha was the pick of the Ashton bowlers claiming 3/14 from 4 overs. HereceivedgoodsupportfromWalters (2/17 from 4 overs) and McCarter (2/3 from 2 overs). Defending 71-runs Manor made an early breakthrough after opener Pierre was caught behind by wicketkeeper Mitha off the bowling of Reginald Gounder for 4 runs. Manor’s hopes slowly started to fade away after Osborne and Steenkamp put on a splendid 50-runs part-

nership. Steenkamp showed scant respect for the Manor attack, smashing a quick-fire 44 runs (which included seven fours and a huge six) before being bowled by Gounder. Rubin (4) and Osborne (16 not out) guided Ashton to a comfortable 7wickets victory. Manor coach Isaac Abraham congratulated Ashton on their fine performance, but was disappointed that the talented duo of Osborne and spinner Thotha failed to make the Ilembe under 13 squad who will be participating in the forthcoming KwaZulu-Natal primary schools under 13 cricket festival. Former Ilembe Primary Schools Cricket president Abraham, who detested selection trials, reiterated that all schools must participate in a league and statistics must be used for selection purposes. He argued that schools that don’t participate in the league, should be ruled out for selection purposes. “Probably, both Ashton players failed to impress on the day selections were made, but the question beckons, is it fair to both players who have impressed throughout the Top Schools Cricket Tournament,” said Abraham.
