Mega mall gets green light

>> Ballito Junction R1.4 billion mega mall development gets go ahead from KwaDukuza Municipality JYOTHI LALDAS

A

FTER months of sitting on the fence the R1.4 billion Ballito Junction regional shopping centre development has been given the go-ahead by the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM). The municipality, on Wednesday, approved the Site Development Plan (SDP) for the 65,000m2 mega mall project being led by the Menlyn Maine and Flanagan and Gerard consortium. According to plans the existing Ballito Junction will be extended by more than six times its current size into a world-class regional

shopping destination at the entrance to Ballito. Construction on Ballito Junction, which is located at the entrance of Ballito, between the busy N2 and M4 highways, is anticipated to take about 24 months. The new mall is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2017. The new Ballito Junction will be home to the town’s first cinemacomplex, inadditiontoboasting great family entertainment, a hugely expanded fashion offering for the region and an exciting mix of food outlets. Speaking to the Weekly, mayor Ricardo Mthembu said the mall will be a “draw card” for the

KwaDukuza Municipality. “We are already a tourist destination of choice for people from South Africa and abroad. This new mall which, I am sure will rival many regional malls, will mean growth for us as a municipality and as a community. We will have access to so much more than we do now, even our own cinema. “It is about time KwaDukuza is seen as the place to be. I am happy about this development and cannot wait to see how it turns out.” Developer Menlyn Maine directorCarlJankowitz, welcomed the announcement saying it was a significant milestone for the development – one the biggest property investments currently in the area. >> STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

More shopping options for North Coast residents “The KwaDukuza Municipality recog nises our commitment and the value this major investment is going to have on the region. It is going to take the shopping, en tertainment and leisure offering on the North Coast region to a whole new lev el, with the new mega mall set to be come the hotspot in Ballito both for lo cals and tourists.” “Getting the green light means we can commence with the redevelop ment of Ballito Junction into the domi nant regional shopping centre on the KZN North Coast. “This exciting development will see the existing 10,000m2 centre being overhauled and extended to 65,000m2,” said Patrick Flanagan, ex ecutive director of Flanagan and Ger ard Property Development and Invest ment. “The new, significantly larger and more striking Ballito Junction regional shopping centre is being developed to meet the retail and leisure needs of a growing and affluent market on the North Coast. “It will boast a considerable enter tainment and leisure component, an chored by a Nu Metro cinema complex and trendy restaurants. “This, together with a worldclass retail mix of top SA and international fashion outlets and major department stores, will set the new Ballito Junction apart in the region,” he adds. Jankowitz also said that at R1.4 bil lion, this is a massive investment not

just in Ballito, but KZN as a whole. “While our initial investment will take the mall to 65,000m2, develop ment rights that exist on the site allow for the centre to be further expanded to90,000m2–that’s“superregional” shopping centre status.” According to developers the existing centre will continue to trade, largely unaffected by construction ac tivities. However, the centre will undergo a degree of modernisation, so as to tie in to the expansion. Current anchor tenant Pick n Pay will be expanded, and other existing tenants like DisChem, will be joined by an array of department stores. Illustrating demand and how up beat national and international retail ers are about the development, Flana gan says more than 80% of the space is already let. “It’smorethantwoyearsbeforethe new Ballito Junction regional mall is scheduled to open, and we have al ready secured several major retail brands. Woolworths,Game,Edgars,Foschi ni, Truworths, Jet, Queenspark, Mar kham, Identity, Total Sports, Clicks, In credible Connection, Cape Union Mart and Coricraft are among the retailers already signed up to join Pick n Pay and DisChem at Ballito Junction,” he said. On the entertainment and food side, Nu Metro Cinemas, Spur and Turn ‘n Tender, and a host of popular fast food outlets and restaurants in the food court have already been secured.

Boston occupational programmes >> Five reasons why students should investigate occupational programmes

W

HEN it comes to choosing an academic pro gramme to study that leads to good employ ment, be sure to look at occupational pro grammes.ThisistheadvicefromRuanVenter, registrar of Boston City Campus & Business College. According to Venter, students often overlook oc cupational programmes because they are not aware of what makes these programmes unique. “As the name indicates, occupational pro grammes prepare students for a specific occupa tion,” he elaborates. “They are thus very focused and structured to get a student as workready as possi ble.” Besides their specific focus, occupational pro grammeshavecertaindistinctiveadvantages, which Venter unpacks as follows: 1. Register anytime – due to the training method ology, students can register for occupational pro grammes at almost any time. Thereareexceptionshereandthere, butmostoc cupational programmes are open for registration throughout the year. Students can start their studies straight away – unlike degree courses for example, where registration deadlines and course times are strictly applied. 2. A National Senior Certificate or National Certif icate (vocational) may not necessarily be required – registering to participate in occupational pro grammes don’t necessarily require a matric certifi cate and have different entry requirements. These range from Grade 10(NQFlevel 2) to Grade 12(NQF level4),whichmeansthatifyoudon’thaveaNation al Senior Certificate (NSC) you can still start your studies and reach your career aspirations. 3. Open doors to higher learning – occupational programmes make it possible for you to start your studiesholdingaGrade10certificateandendupwith adegree.Thisisbecauseastudentbuildscreditsover a period of time and can use these credits to gain accesstohighereducationcoursesthroughcreditac cumulation and transfer (CAT) or recognition of prior learning (RPL). 4. Short course – most occupational pro grammes can be completed within a 12 month peri od. Once students pass all the required tests and as sessments, they receive their awards (certificates) and can enter the job market. 5. Employment ready – occupational pro grammes are less theoretical in nature and tend to be more practically orientated in teaching method ologyandlearningoutcomes.Someprogrammesare designedwithaworkintegratedlearning(WIL)com ponent, during which time students get handson practical experience. Once students successfully complete their occupational programmes – the the oretical as well as the practical training they are completely ready to work in their chosen occupation. They can hit the ground running, as employers are fond of saying. “Boston’s provision of a wide range of occupa tional programmes is important in meeting the insti tution’s mission to provide quality and relevant edu cation and training to all its students and to create a culture of lifelong learning, correcting inequalities and underscoring aspirations as specified by the

Council on Higher Education,” said Venter. “ Boston’s education offerings serve to meet the needs of em ployees and professionals to continually upgrade their skills and knowledge. Furthermore, our offerings ena ble access to higher education to those who were de nied or may not meet the formal requirements for high education.” Boston City Campus & Business College offers a variety of occupational programmes in fields such as health, sport and wellness, secretarial, public rela

tions, businesscommunicationandservicetomention a few. To find out more go to www.boston.co.za and reference the prospectus on occupational pro grammes headed with “We know you have big dreams”. The prospectus describes the various occupational programmes offered by the institution, how students could articulate from one NQFlevel to the next, how credit accumulation and transfer works; and answer mostfrequentlyaskedquestionsthatprospectivestu

dents may have. Prospective students and parents are also welcome to go to the Boston City Campus & Busi ness College branch nearest to them and speak to a career advisor facetoface if they need further clarifi cation and information on occupational programmes. How far can peer pressure go? YOUNG boys in this day and age bully their peers into consuming alcohol, which is wrong. Parents themselves need to be wary of the consequences of allowing your teenagers to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes as this might have a negative impact on your child’s life. Most parents want their children to be good, decent human beings. On Friday we witnessed a young boy col lapse right in front of us. His peers poured 20 litres of water all over him in an effort to bring him back to consciousness. Afterwards they put him in a parked car and left him there for about 30 to 50 minutes. Oneoftheboy’sfriendssaid:“Lethimsleep he will be okay, that is what happens when you drink for the first time.” The next day we found out that the boy who had collapsed was in hospital because he is diabetic and alcohol is not good for him. We pray that God will be there for the boy and his family during such a difficult time and we urge children to wait until they are the ap propriate age to start drinking alcohol. Concerned parent

You can also bring your medication with you to each visit so your healthcare worker can check what you have and issue you with what you need. Please do not accumulate the medica tionathomeandthenbringitmonthslater to the pharmacy because we will have to discard it according to the Pharmacy Law (Pharmacy act 101 of 1953) as we are not allowed to reuse any medication returned to us from patients. Sona according to the DA THIS year’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) definitely did not disappoint in providing free circus entertainment for millions of South Africans and the world. The event gave birth to a hashtag that started trending worldwide and South Africa became that country airing its dirty linen in public. It started offline when it was about fashion choices and trends and tweets, this showed the lighthearted side of South African politics. If we are to succeed as a nation we need to start believing in the power of human agency. We need to resurrect the idea that the choices we make, and the actions we take, matter. It is true that the uneven legacy of the apartheid system weighs heavy on us. It is a fact that black children still do not have the same opportunities as white children.Thisisahumantragedythatno body in this beloved country of ours shouldaccept.Muchhasbeendonetore dress the past, make no mistake, but the

blame game has to stop now. Life in South Africa today is certainly better than it was during apartheid but we need to hold ourselves to a much higher standard than that. We need to becomethenationthatPresidentNelson Mandela helped us believe we could be come, aplaceofhope, prosperity, selfless leadership and mutual respect. And so the honest question we must ask ourselves today as patriotic South Africancitizensis, whatisholdingusback from achieving Madiba’s vision? We can blame apartheid. We can blame the global financial system. We can blame global warming. We can even blame Jan van Riebeeck. But in our hearts we know what the bottom truth and the problem is we have allowed those in power to become bigger than our institutions, breaking them down bit by bit under our nose and we have allowed ourselves to become subjects of mockery in the global village. Dear fellow South Africans here are somepointstoponderwhenmakingyour next electorate selection of leadership for this country. How do you defend the blatant abuse

But I am still going to defend South Africa. I refuse to stand on the sidelines and laugh or despair. We have allowed one powerful man to get away with too much for too long. This man here in our presence today has been ordained as ‘mighty president the untouchable’. South Africa, enough is enough. Let’s think deeply about the choices we make and let’s not make history re peat itself. Voter education is now detrimental more than ever starting from municipal to provincial level and then national lev el. Let us uproot this chaff before it even simmers down to the future of our chil dren and the generation to come. It’s up to us as a democratic nation tostopthismockeryandtreatthisnation as a serious business not a free circus show for the whole wide world to see. You and I can put an end to this. Whatpeopleandtheworldwitnessedon the State of the Nation Address is just a tip the iceberg. It has to stop now. Councillor K. Naidoo DA Mandeni

IN MEMORIUM

Thanking a traffic officer

LATE MR BHIM BALKISSOON

Singing at the National Teaching Awards

(Proprietor of Stanger Radiator Works)

In Loving memory of my beloved husband and our dear father who was called to rest on 11 March 1991. Twenty four years have gone and it seems like yesterday, We lost a soul with a heart of gold, Who was dearer to us than wealth untold. A helping hand to all in need, Your life was full of kindly deeds. The tears we shed are wiped away, But the ache in our hearts is here to stay. No one knows the pain we bear, When the family gathers and you are not there. Dearly missed and forever remembered by your loving wife Lucy, sons Nirvan & Vishal and daughter Natasha. Inserted by Mrs Bhim & Family.

In Loving Memory of

Jock Soobramoney 1945-2015

A light from our household gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home, which we can never replace. God gave us a beautiful father, A father who never grow old, You were always there with a helping hand, Help us now to accept his plan, We miss you now, our heart are sore, As time goes by we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can take our fathers place. You and your family are invited to attend the 16th day Ceremony of the late Jock Soobramoney Date: Friday, 13 march 2015 Time: 18 h00 Venue: 51 Mpunzi Rd Mandini Your presence will be appreciated. You will be sadly missed by your loving wife Dolly, your sons Kumarasen & Sugen and daughter Dreshnee, your mum, your son in law Shane & daughter in law Tanya. Your grandchildren Shreya & Kiana. Your brothers Vella & Anand & sister Tholisie and a host of family and friends.

Proteas wither at Eden Park WEEKLY REPORTER THE Proteas withered at the Auck land’s Eden Park on Saturday, slump ing to a 29runs defeat at the hands of Pakistan in an ICC Cricket World (Pool B) game. Pakistan pulled off a hardfought victory under the DuckworthLewis method in a match reduced to 47 overs. Pakistan posted 222 in 46.4 overs with skipper MishahulHaq (56) and Sarfraz Ahmed (49) the chief con tributors. The Proteas batsmen squandered a good start in pursuit of their run chase, but the loss of wickets at regular intervalsledtotheirdownfall.Noteven the brave heroics of standout skipper and batsman, AB de Villers, who smashed77runsoff58ballscouldsave the blushes of the South African outfit. The Proteas withered under a threepronged pace attack spear headed by Pakistan’s Mohammed Ir fan who grabbed 3/52. Rahat Ali took 3/40 and Wahab Riaz claimed 3/40 as the three lefthanders mesmerised the Proteas. Proteas skipper, AB de Villiers at tributed the lack of partnerships as the key factor in their 29runs defeat to Pakistan. De Villiers said: “We didn’t get enough partnerships during the pressure situations. We have done it in the past, but unfortunately tonight we couldn’t do that”. After their defeat to Pakistan on Saturday, the Proteas squad and their

supporters throughout the world watched Sunday’s clash between Sri Lanka and Australia with bated breathbecause barring any further upsets in the roundrobin stages of the tournament, the loser (Sri Lanka) is likely to secure third spot in Pool A which will be Proteas most likely oppo nents in the quarterfinals stages of the tournament. The Proteas would have learnt a few lessons about the importance of partnerships from Sunday’s game. Australia, batting first against Sri Lan ka were 41/2 after 8.4 overs. Michael Clarke and Steve Smith put on a matchwinning 134runs partnership in 23 overs for the 3rd wicket. After the demise of Clarke and Smith, Glen Maxwell and Shane Wat son put on yet another valuable part nership of 160 runs. Maxwell (102) scored the secondfastest hundred in the40yearhistoryoftheCricketWorld Cup when he reached three figures off just 51 balls at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It is those important partner ships that propelled Australia to 376/9 in their allotted 50overs. Australia wentontoclaimanimpressive64runs victory after dismissing Sri Lanka for 312 runs. Will the Proteas bounce back after Saturday’s disappointing loss to Pakistan? Ardent Proteas fan, NR Singh said: “It was indeed a below par perform ance for the Proteas team with so much talent. They need to pick up their game.”

UDI’S secondgeneration R8 sports carwilldebutatthe2015Genevaauto show in March and be in Europe’s showrooms later in the year. South Africa has to wait until the second quarter of 2016 for delivery — and bear in mind that in Europe the V10 (a new engine) costs the equivalent of R2.1 million and the V10 Plus R2.4 million. South African prices, as always, will be announced at the local launch. The latest R8 has subtle design changes, the new V10, new allwheel drive and the latest in Audi technology. The previous 4.2 V8 has been supersed ed by a nonturbo, 5.2litre, V10 in two vari ants. Standard, it’s capable of 402kW/540Nm, 100km/h in 3.5sec and 323km/h. The R8 Plus is tuned for 454kW/560Nm, 3.2sec and 330km/h. The S Tronic comes with manual mode, launch control and coasting mode. The R8 V10 Plus has a dry weight of 1454kgs, 50kgs less than its predecessor. No other model of ours evokes more dynamic emotion. “All of that,” Audi says, “makes the new R8 V10 Plus the most powerful and fastest series production Audi yet.” Its underbody, Audi says, has a diffuser to boost downforce. Its chassis, with double wishbone suspension, demonstrates how close the to motorsport is the new Audi R8. The design of remains largely un changed from the outgoing version at 4.42m long, 1.24m tall and on a 2.65m wheelbase. Its dimensions have changed slightly from its predecessor, the most obvi ous being an extra 4cm in width. It has a squaredoff, singleframe grille with trapezoidal diod lights (“laserpow ered” beams as an option) and restyled air intakes. The new R8 boasts dy namic turn signals with a “scrolling function” for the in tended turn direction. The rear is more angled and the previous round exhausts are replaced by trapezoidal outlets. It’s equipped with 19” alloy rims shod with 245/30 (front) and 245/35 (rear) tyres though 20” are available. The Plus ver

KSST emerge victorious in scrappy 21 win WEEKLY REPORTER KSST Volleyball Club emerged victorious in a scrappy 2-1 win against Friendz in the semis of the Trophies Engravers Top 8 Knockout Cup (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) at the association courts on Thursday night. The KSST outfit looked far from the pedigree of their 2012 line-up and the absence of Cameron Singh (who quit KSST to join Liberte at the start of the 2015 season) and Lloyd Chetty have created a huge headache for manager Syd Kistan. KSST welcomed back prodigal son Kyle Puckree, who had a short training stint with DUT and watched their (KSST) game from the stands a fortnight ago. KSSTheldontoahard-fought 17-15 lead in the opening set. Sherwin Daniel’s powerful overarm serve and the lanky Immilo Pillay proved to be a perennial thorn in the flesh of the Friendz side, who lost the first set 25-21. Byron Athymoolam replaced Puckreeatthestartofthesecond set. KSST raced to a comfortable 7-2 lead, but Friendz clawed their way back into contention with the left-handed Praveen Premlall and Sheldon “Punch” Milligan scoring points with ease against the former VSA Cup

iLEMBE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY iLEMBE UMASIPALA WESIFUNDA WATER RESTRICTIONS! Stage 4 Water Restrictions: “Time of Use” has been implemented; water supply will be interrupted from 10pm at night to 4am the next morning. Should this measure not meet the required curtailment, additional shutdowns of the water supply during the day, may be required. Consumers may also experience lower pressure and interruptions to supply without notice, in our effort to achieve the curtailments needed, to ensure we prolong the storage of the Hazelmere Dam.

How can you help us save water?

In and around the house/business • Turn off taps while washing your face, brushing your teeth or shaving • Taking a five-minute shower a day, instead of a bath, will use a third of the water, saving up to 400 litres a week. Showering could use up to 20 litres of water per minute. • If you prefer to bath, share the water and don’t make it as full. Taking a bath could use between 80 and 150 litres of water. • Use low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilets mechanisms and water-efficient washing machines. • Kettles should be filled with just enough water for your needs and not the brim. This will help to reduce your electricity bill as well. • Don’t over-fill containers for cooking. You will also use more energy to heat the water • Reducing the toilet flush volume alone can save 20% of total water consumption. This can be achieved by putting a 2 litre cold drink bottle, filled with water, and a little sand to add weight, into the cistern. In the garden • Always water your plans during the early morning hours or in the evening, when temperatures are cooler. Watering between 10:00 and 15:00 you can lose up to 90% of water to evaporation • Every time you boil an egg, save the cooled water for your houseplants. They’ll benefit from the nutrients released from the shell • Focus on indigenous and non-water-consumptive alien plants (but not invasive alien plants) • Group plants according to their water needs and not mulch around them • Water gardens frequently, but water well. Using a garden hose could use as much as 30 litres of water per minute • Clear invasive alien plants on your property • Roof water can also be profitably stored in tanks, for watering gardens • Use “grey water” – used water from baths, washing machines and other safe sources – to water your garden. KDVA special general meeting WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Volleyball Association (KDVA) will host a special general meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at The Quartz Conference Centre at 7pm. All player registration forms (with photos), monies (R70 per player) and

affiliation fees (R500) will be collected at the meeting. High on the agenda will be the structuring of the league programme for the new season. There is a strong possibility that KDVA will scrap the social league and incorporate a competitive and division one league. The league is expect-

ed to get under way on Thursday, 26 March. In other volleyball news, rumours are rife that the country club sports complex (including the volleyball courts, recreation ground, country club, netball and basketball courts) has been sold to a private consortium.

>> Thembeni broke the deadlock in the eighth minute

T

HEMBENI Football Club snatched a thrilling 2-1 win against Happy Stars in a Safa KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League game at the recreation grounds on Saturday. Thembeni broke the deadlock in the eighth minute after Nthando Mthembu latched onto a cross from Sphelele Ndlanzi and headed powerfully past the Stars keeper to give his side a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Thembeni were caught on the counter-attack, but

Stars striker Nqanawa Tenza selfishlyshotatgoal, kickingstraightintothe armsoftheThembenikeeper, instead of passing the ball to the unmarked Lungelo Khuzwayo in the box. Thembeni went ahead 2-0 after Ndlanzi’s intended cross from the left flank into the box floated over the outstretched arms of the Stars keeper and into the far right-hand corner of the net. In the 35th minute Andile “Jali” Ngcobo beat his marker on the left flank and instead of passing the ball to his team-mates in the box, he greedily shot at goal from an acute an-

gle, hitting the side-netting. Barely minutes before the break, the Thembeni keeper Khanyisani Mlambo was beaten by an awkward bounce on a below-par playing surface. Mlambo dived to his left to save Khuzwayo’s shot, but the ball bounced just before him before rebounding off the crossbar. The rebounder fell invitingly at the feet of Tenza who calmly tapped the ball into an empty goal-mouth to reduce the deficit (1-2). Thembeni brought on Rocky Zaca for Andile Ngcobo on the left flank at the start of the second half in the hope of sealing the fate of their rivals. In the 55th minute Stars were awarded a dubious free kick just outside the box after Sizwe Mhlongo was alleged to havebeenfouledbytheThembenileft back. Stars failed to capitalise on the resultant free kick after Mhlongo’s tame shot was comfortably saved by the Thembeni keeper. Minutes later Tenza beat the offsidetrap, buthispowerfulcloserange was superbly parried by the Thembeni keeper for a corner. With less than 15 minutes remaining Stars made a double substitution, replacing Tenza with Mthokozi Mhlongo and bringing on Philani Mlambo for right back Songezo Dada, who was nursing an ankle injury. In the dying minutes of the game, man-of-the-match Ndlanazi beat his marker with some fancy footwork, but his shot was saved by the Stars keeper to add some respectability to the 2-1 score-line. In an earlier game, Siyazama claimed maximum points in their walkover against Madundube United.

The KwaDukuza mayor, councillor Ricardo Mthembu invited officials of sporting codes within the country club ground precinct to a meeting today, Wednesday 11 March, at 2.30pm at the KwaDukuza Supper Room. Representatives of the various codes are urged to attend.
