WHOPPING R652 000 has been donated for the construction of the first Summerhill House children’s home. The cheque was handed over by Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust trustees at a sod turning ceremony at the site in Etete on Thursday last week. The donation will be enough to cover the build and set up costs of Summerhill’s first fully-functional home. In addition to this a community centre is also in the pipeline. SummerhillHouseisanon-profitorganisation that opened eight years ago with the aim to provide orphaned and abandoned children with love, family and a chance at a happy life in a home environment. Their aim to construct four fully-functional homes that will ultimately house six children and a house mother. Through the donation some 220 children will be directly and favorably impacted, while countless others in the community will have their lives touched as well. Addressing the gathering, Sibaya Casino and entertainment Kingdom chairman Vivian Reddy spoke of the Afrisun KZN Trust’s objectives and partnerships in the area, the significance that a project of this nature can hold and how proud they are to be able to help build the community in this way. Paula Owen, who has developed and shepherded the idea of Summerhill House since inception. acknowledged the significant contribution that the Afrisun KZN Trust made. “I have heard it said that money flows toward trust, so thank you Afrisun for trusting us with your enormous donation. We will be faithful with every cent, using it wisely to build children’s lives for generations to come.” Her colleague from the community, who was also instrumental in the founding of Sum-

Turnaround plan for poor performing schools >> 401 iLembe schools fall in quintile one bracket

A

The Elleah Rose Foundation will ho sat a free clinic for children, the elderly, people afflicted by drug ad diction and debilitated patients on Saturday, 7 March from 2pm until 5pm at the Mdoniville Community Hall. Community members are urged to take advantage of these free ser vices.

MASSIVE turnaround plan for poorly performing schools in the iLembe District was unveiled by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Art, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha and MEC for Education Peggy Nkonyen recently. The plan follows intense engagements with education stakeholders after several challenges were identified during the reopening of schools which resulted in the district obtaining poor matric results. Among the challenges that were raised was a shortage of teachers for subjects such as maths and science, the Post Provisioning Model which resulted in some schools having more classes than teachers, divisionsandsquabblesamongteachers and principals, substance abuse by pupils and the transportation of pupils from outlying areas. Another challenge was the quintilesystem, whichresultedin, among other things, some schools not bene-

The department has urged school principals to use the opportunity provided by the department to contesttherankingoftheirschoolsevery year in September. Sibhidla-Saphetha urged all stakeholders to revive the education stakeholder forum that will address all educational matters in the district. “This forum must include all stakeholders including those who deal with social ills.” She also urged the department to prioritise the renovation of schools that were affected by storms in the district. Nkonyeni said that her department has established Operation Bounce Back which is aimed at strengthening the capacity of senior management in the department and school principals. She said that the turnaround plan included filling of all vacant posts in the district and provide training to unqualified teachers. Workshops are also going to be conducted to capacitate subject advisors.

Water pipe replacement project progressing well in Stanger Manor Councillor Madhun Sing with Anthony Laskey (man agerSBT Civ ils) who has agreed to at tend to all concerns raised by the community. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

JYOTHI LALDAS THE Stanger Manor pipeline replacement is progressing well despite some challenges. This is according to ward councillor Madhun Sing. He said work of this magnitude will inconvenience residents and that is a reality. “There is no quick-fix solution. Complaints are attended to on a daily basis when it is brought to our atten-

tion. During this process the common problems encountered were damage to water pipelines, Telkom lines, electrical cables and some driveways.” He said if all goes accordingly the project would be completed by June. However, some portions of Stanger Manor will be completed much sooner because of advanced work.” Sing said Freezia and Rose Roads resurfacing will be completed within weeks, followed by the Highridge area

within three months and the remaining area of Stanger Manor by June. “Motorists and residents are requested to co-operate with workers. “I empathise with residents for the little inconveniences the project is causing. Motorists are advised to drive slowly to avoid damages to their vehicles. “Residents can also log their complaints at the site office on Manor Drive opposite the Engen garage.”

new contract with our international supplier is signed every year (I do, however, stand to be corrected). Not so it seems as our options are really sad at the moment. Sally Lipswich, Warner Beach

SMILE AWHILE

W

E were incredulous when president Jacob Zuma stated that the current blackouts are due to apartheid. We thought the CEO of Eskom Tshediso Matona probably got it right when he said in no uncertain manner that Eskom’s failings were due to a lack of maintenance over the years. We were disconcerted when possibly the most effective communicator of recent years, Andrew Etzinger, had his tongue stilled because his fluent explanations became unacceptable to the ruling party. At a time when our daily visits of stage two blackouts are punctuated by an incident when Eskom passed through the threshold of third stage blackouts, how worried should we be by the bland assurance from the utility that there is not the slightest possibility of a total blackout? If our figures are correct Eskom has a generating capacity of about 9000 megawatts. When stage three is reached the

utility has lost 4000 megawatts and whenitisbreachedanationalblackout is not far down the road. The five years’ delays in the commissioning of Medupi and Kusile PowerStationshasseentheoriginalbudget of R150 billion jump up to R326 billion. Together with the monthly cost of R2 billion for diesel, this will push Eskom’s interest payments into the stratosphere. A piece of legislation which would bring immediate relief and which would enable independent power producers to strengthen the national grid has been rejected by the NEC of the ANC where political will eats away the ability of the economy to grow. This ruling from Luthuli House has been duly accepted by the bloated top brass of the utility, many of whom owe their positions to being well connected politically, rather than knowing much about management and the generation of electricity.

Baseless claims of conspiracy to collapse Parliament THECongressofthePeople(Cope)condemns the baseless claim by the chairperson of the ANC that there are forces from outside the country that want to collapse parliament. In our view, this is utter nonsense. Baleka Mbete must not think for a moment that the people ofSouthAfricaarefoolsandcannotsee what is happening to subvert our democracy.

ment and the country. Baleka Mbete is desperate to find conspirators to deflect attention from Zuma and herself. We know that the people are seeing through her lies. Underestimating the intelligence of the people of the country, as she is doing, is going to boomerang on her and the ANC. COPE asserts that Zuma has become a liability for the ANC as well as the country. The solution is for him to go. The sooner the better. The truth is that the ANC is experiencing serious tension because members are unhappy which stems from president Jacob Zuma being leader. COPE is aware that a group of very senior leaders and other members of the ANC, including some in the alliance, want Zuma to go. They are blaming his lack of leadership for what is happening in parlia-

On the one side there is an impossibly high wage bill where the average yearly income of some 46 000 employees is R633 000 a year or R53 000 a month. Who would not like to work at Eskom with the retired CEO, Brian Dames, taking home R22 million last year. On the other side there is a patent inability to generate income by selling its product. The eight metros, seven of which are run down by the ANC, owe Eskom R53 billion. The total figure for all municipalities runs at R93 billion. Soweto alone owes Eskom R4 billion, but the ruling party is unlikely to take any action with the metro and municipal elections taking place early next year with their position faltering badly already.

50 shades of messed up W

HEN I say 50 shades of messed up, I'm not referring to the way in which the main character of the movie 50 Shades of Grey describes himself. InsteadIamreferringtotheentire movie itself. 50 Shades of Grey is going to lead to the destruction of our generation and future generations. Afterreadingthesynopsisandcomments of critics and other people on this movie, I have come to the conclusion that it is a movie based on abuse

that way. The ideas this movie instills in young people is that love can be created through a contract and that it can be shown through whips and chains. It also implies that sex can be something that is coerced out of someone. This is definitely not an idea I would want my children to have. The standards of society is dropping to such an extent that we allow a movie, which has also been re-

and control. Why are we allowing our young women to believe that this is romantic? Why are we allowing our young mentobelievethatthisisawaywomen like to be treated? Young people need to be instilled with ideals such as respect for each other. It gives men the impression that women want to be controlled and beaten and gives women the impression that it is romantic to be treated

ferred to as soft porn, to be screened openly. The scary part about it is that not many people were phased by this. We have the duty to rise up and stand against things that will harm the future of our generation. Wehavetoriseupasacommunity and come against the ideas of society that try to change the morals that have been instilled in us. Don't let our generation reach a point of destruction. Clayton Marie

Nationalism and racism NATIONALISM’S historic and current link to racism in South Africa and else where is undeniable. Hitlerdeclaredthattheprimarytask of a nationalist leadership was to en courage, focus and maintain the peo ple’s animosity towards a denigrated enemy and its institutions. The indoctrination of his chosen people to his mould was accomplished by the inculcation of racist vilification of the targeted enemy, coupled to abso lute, unquestioning allegiance to the vaderland and the volk. Of course, an inclination to favour ‘one’s own’ people is in our genes: ‘fami ly first’ expands to embrace a guarded community and from there to maintain social cohesion. The survival motivations of this nat ural propensity are obvious people are understandably supportive of the secu ritytheyfeelintheirfamiliarculturalen claves, and because change does not evolve over time, but is sudden, it is per

pertlyfireupingroupcohesionandout group friction for their own ends, deper sonalising individuals to facilitate the exaggeration of group similarities and group differences. In his book, The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker tells of a newsreel that caught a “well brought up Afrikaans police man” in the official act of breaking up a protest march, requiring him to strike out at the protestors in order disperse the mob. One of the protestors, a woman, lost a shoe in her attempt to flee. Suddenly seeingtheprotestor, notasadehuman ised object of antagonism, but as a vul nerable, terrorstricken woman fleeing withoutashoe, theofficermomentarily losthistrainedfocusandrevertedtobe ing a gentleman, picking up and hand ing back the shoe to its owner. As Sen points out, we are not just one thing, we are not only police or pro testor, black or white, rich or poor, man or woman, South African or Zimbab

ceived as alien and threatening, even when it is not so and when this resist ance to inclusiveness impedes benefi cial progress. This is one reason why racism is so easy to foment in people who feel vul nerable and under threat, as many South Africans are and always have been. However, as we evolve, the racist die is cast less in our genes than in indoctri nation and observation of the behav iour we witness in society. It is our duty to be fair and to ensure that our opinions are wellfounded and are our own, that our actions do not arouse or even justify racial stereoty ping, and that we resist incitement. Amartya Sen’s illuminating book, Identity and Violence, provides insight into the way in which personal and group differences are seized upon and emphasised particularly by leaders. These differences are emphasised byleaderssuchasdemagogueswhoex

As multifaceted individuals, we have natural affinities and differences that may unite, segregate or permit co existence, but we need to resist being colourtypecast and primed by half witted ranting demagogues to role play the destructive roles foist on us in the service of egomaniacal abuses of unchecked power. Twenty years into African National Congress rule, our ‘rainbow nation’ leaders were still chanting, “cowards are afraid ... shoot ... kill the boer!” Who says racist nationalism is of our apartheid past? STEVEN VAN STADEN *This letter has been shortened.

Visit www.stangerweekly.co.za COPE has for many years called for a substantial reduction in the size of gov ernment, a rigorous implementation of the PFMA, and an end to futile and fruit less expenditure. We need political will and good governance, not tax increases to rebuild fiscal space. COPE pleads for the implementation of a South African National Debt clock showing, hour by hour, the size of the debt and the cost of servicing that escalating

debt. Borrowing freely and taxing heavily is not sustainable. COPE also calls on the public to consti tute ACT, a public organisation represent ing activist citizens and taxpayers. With out extensive accountability being de manded, the people will be squeezed tight while those in government will grow fat and lazy.

Clarifying the beach development bebacle

MANYnegativeallegationshavebeen levelled against me in the matter of the development of the beach nodes which was recently discussed in KDM’s council chambers. This letter serves, in no uncertain terms, toclarifymystanceonthematter.AttheoutsetletmestatethatIsupport the development of all beach nodes of KwaDukuza. I have never at any time proposed or requested for any such development to be halted or abandoned. My argument merely proceeded out of the analysis presented at a council workshop on the 12 February regarding the development of KDM’s beach nodes. Slide 14 of the PowerPoint presentation confirmed explicitly that Dolphin Coast beaches have the greatest concentration of tourism. In fact, it provided graphical evidence indicating that tourism in all other beaches in KDM put together do not even amount to half of the tourists frequenting the Dolphin Coast beaches. On the basis of these findings I appealed to council to give the Dolphin Coast beaches greater attention and extrafeaturessoastocapitaliseonthe booming tourism industry in that region and consequently enlarge the municipality’s revenue base. My other concern pertained to the Nonoti and Gledhow beaches. Nonoti andGledhowwerenotpartofthenine beachnodesinitiallyidentifiedfordevelopment by KDM in 2013. Nonoti was only included at a later stage and it has since meteorically leapt into the top six beach nodes to be prioritised. I wanted to know what prompted this inclusion of Nonoti because, as far as I know, this beach aka Harry Bodasing Beach has always been regarding as a private beach. A simple explanation from council would have sufficed. Gledhow was a concern for me too because it was an eleventh hour inclusion, it was not mentioned at the council workshop on beach nodes and it has never been discussed or approved at any previous meetings of council. Itisirregularforsuchindependent decisions to be taken with taxpayers and ratepayers monies while council remains unaware.

P

ROTEAS silenced their critics after routing West Indies by 257-run in an ICC Cricket World Cup round-robin league game (Pool B) played at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia on Friday. Skipper AB de Villiers led from the front hitting a swashbuckling 162 not out(from66balls)toguideSouthAfrica to their second-highest World Cup total of 408/5. De Villiers boasts the fastest fifty, hundred and 150 in ODI cricket (courtesy of the West Indies outfit). De Villiers smashed 8 sixes and 17 fours, with four of those of sixes coming in the final over of the Proteas innings. Chris Gayle came into Friday’s game after smashing a double centuryagainstZimbabweandcriticsofthe Proteas outfit were expecting him (Gayle) to continue his rich vein of form and land a double blow against De Villers men, who lost to India a fortnight ago. The Proteas got off to a sluggish start, scoring at little more than three runs per over and after the loss of Quinton de Kock (12) in the sixth over (18/1), many expected yet another

South African collapse. But, Faf du Plessis (62 off 70 balls) and Hashim Amla (65 off 88 balls) consolidated the Proteas innings taking the tally to 146/3 before Rossouw (61 off 39 balls) and De Villiers (162 not out off 66 balls) set the Sydney

Ground ablaze to guide the Proteas to 408/5 in 50 overs. Imran Tahir produced magical figures of 45/5 from 10 overs to restrict West Indies to 151 all out in 33.1 overs. Avid Proteas supporter, NR Singh

said: “I am sure the Proteas vs West Indies Match is still a talking point in many households. As I expected the Proteas were on fire and put in an all round clinical performance batting first. “With Amla and du Plessis setting up a wonderful second wicket partnershipof127runs,givingABdeVilliers the ideal platform to unleash a hurricane innings on the West Indies, AB and Riley added 134 as, AB blitzed hiswaytoamajestic162notoutinjust 66 balls. “As predicted Imran Tahir performed superbly with the ball taking 5 wickets for 45 in 10 overs. It is also encouraging that Kyle Abbott chipped in with a fine bowling performance.IexpecttheProteastohave won against Ireland on Tuesday morning. Going forward the Proteas face a wounded and unpredictable Pakistan team but I am positive that the Proteas have enough fire power to be able to fire on all cylinders and see them out. “We are a dangerous batting unit when we get it right in terms of laying that platform for our hitters. The bowlers are also coming to the fore

and I predict a comfortable Proteas victory.” Meanwhile, four-times World Cup champions, Australia suffered a nailbiting one-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand in a Pool A fixture played at Auckland (New Zealand). Left-arm seamer Trent Boult took a career best of 5/27 that saw Australia restricted to 151 all out in 32.2 overs New Zealand were cruising to victory at 131/4, but lost their next five wicketsfor15runsinjust19ballsthat left the Black Caps staring down the barrel of defeat at 146/9. With six runs needed to seal victory and just one wicket in hand, the pendulum swung in favour of Australia. But, Kane Williams hit Pat Cummins for a six to seal a thrilling onewicket victory for New Zealand, who notched up their 4th straight league victory in pool A and secure a place in the knockout stages of the tournament (quarter-finals). WithNewZealandoncoursetofinish at the Pool A, Australia find themselves languishing in 3rd spot with threepoints(followingtheir111-runs victory against England and a no result wash-out draw against Bangladesh). Should South Africa finish second in Pool B, their quarter-final opponents are likely to be Sri Lanka or the Aussies. Australia host Sri Lanka on Sunday, 8 March at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Siyazama wallop Doringkop WEEKLY REPORTER SIYAZAMA Football Club walloped Doringkop 4-1 in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League game played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. The Glendale-based Siyazama outfit came into Saturday’s game boasting an impressive 4-1 win against Melville United a fortnight ago and were hoping to repeat their feat on Saturday. Siyazama was gifted an opportunity in the 10th minute after Musawnkosi Mapholaba was perfectly positioned in the box to shoot at goal, but he miraculously missed the target from barely six metres. In the 20th minute Sipho Zulu, playing deep on the right flank received a long range pass from Mapholaba and weaved his way past two defenders before unleashing a brilliantcrossintotheboxwhichwasperfectly intercepted by the alert Phiwe Mbutho before hammering a low cross past the Doringkop keeper to give Siyazama a 1-0 lead. Siyazama’s joy was short-lived after a horrendous misunderstanding by their keeper, Mthobisi Mbambo and their left back. The alert Doring-

kop striker Sanele Gumede quickly pounced onto the defensive error, tapping the loose ball into an empty goal-mouth to level the scores (1-1). Siyazama coach, Dube Khanyisani frustrated with the lack of vision from his men in the “engine-room” (midfield), made a double substitution just before the break. HebroughtonSphamandlaKhoza for midfielder Khululekhani Mzimela and replaced Mthokozisi Mdanda with Sihle Zulu. The floodgates opened in the second half with substitute Zulu putting Siyazama ahead in the 55th minute after beating the Doringkop keeper, Mondli Masando with a long range shot. Ten minutes later man-of-thematch Sihle Zulu notched up a brace after receiving a perfect through ball from Khoza to give Siyazama a 3-1 lead. In the 68th minute Siyazama was awarded a free-kick after Mapholaba was brought down just outside the box after a reckless challenge by the Doringkop central defender. It was a brilliantly executed freekick which was reminiscent of the club’s training drill. Mbuthooptedtotakethefree-kick,

In the dying minutes of the game, Sanele Zungu beat the Doringkop

keeper with a thunderous drive from just outside the box, but watched agonisingly after his shot ricocheted off the crossbar. An ecstatic Siyazama coach, Khanyisani said: “I am absolutely delighted with the performance of my

charges. We picked up a maximum of 12pointsfromourfourleaguematches during the month of February and I am hoping that my boys will continue to find the back of the net in the month of March in our quest for league honours”.
