WADUKUZA will experience a total electricity shut down between 6am and 11am on Sunday. As a result of copper theft at the Point of Supply (POS) in Gledhow, KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) is forced to undertake major repairs at the POS to avoid major electrical failure during the festive season. At a media briefing at POS on Monday, KDM’s infrastructure and technical portfolio chairperson Sandeep Oudhram said KDM, with the assistance of contractors, will undertake the replacement of a switchgear. “The switchgear, in an electric power system, is the combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment. “At the moment the quality of electricity supply is compromised. Now the urgency of this repair arises because currently their is no breaker to protect the system from a complete failure in the event of a malfunction, say for example, on the Glenhills power line,” said Oudhram. He said in the event of a fault such as lightning damage on the Glenhills line, a surge of power will be sent directly to the POS. “Now, because there is no switchgear, since we removed the damaged one, there is no control over the surge. It will go directly to the supply from Eskom and shut down the entire electrical supply for all areas within the KwaDukuza Municipality.” Oudhram said they cannot afford for this kind of damage especially during the festive season because it will cause a total blackout in KwaDukuza and all other areas within the municipality for no less than 24 hours.

KDM have already notified residents about the shut down via advertisements in local media. According to Nick Hall, KDM director of electrical services, full maintenance of the power system will also be undertaken during the shut down. “The reason we are shutting down power entirely is to ensure that the repairs are not compromised and lives are not endangered. “For us to do the repairs we have to get on top of the live structure and we cannot do this if there is power surging through. According to the statement, under these low flow conditions, the river bed is visible and when observed, can be seen as dark in nature. “The odour and appearance of the river are unfortunately negative aesthetic side-effects of the low-flow conditions; however, other factors have played a role in exacerbating this condition.” The mill is in the process of installing Fine Bubble Diffuser Technology to try and improve the impact of its effluent into the river. “The implementation of this technology shows positive results on waste water treatmentoperations, citingreducedodourfromthe processes as well as reduced chemical oxygen demand in the effluent,” the statement said. In order to allow for the installation of the fine bubble diffusers, an existing unit in the lagoon had to be relocated. Sappi claims during the relocation phase and the commissioning phase, the mill anticipated a slight increase in odour and a slight decrease in effluent quality and notified the Department of Water Affairs accordingly. The estimated completed date for the project is this month (December). The statement further said to date the mill has not experienced such impacts as a result of the project. “Since 21 September 2013, the mill has experienced approximately 25 power outages, of which 15 were experienced since the beginning of the 2014 winter period to middle spring. “We acknowledge that we do have an environmental footprint, but remain committed to managing and mitigating the environmental impacts of our operations and as part of this we strive to proactively meet the environmental commitments embodied in our Sustainability Charter.” In addition and in an ongoing effort to manage and monitor its effects on the river, the mill alsocontinuestoengagewithDr.Gordon‘OBrien, a professional natural scientist, of the Institute of Natural Resources for Biomonitoring AssessmentsoftheuMvotiRiver.“Alowflowassessment was conducted in August this year, with a high flow assessment planned for early this month.” Sukhdeo said as a responsible manufacturer the Sappi Stanger mill strives to achieve the highest effective standards of environmental performance so that while making products that support society’s needs. “Wealwaysstrivetobalanceourneedswithour impact on the earth. ITH iLembe Municipality announcing the North Coast water shortage situation at crisis point last week, urgent measures need to be put into place. The municipality urges the communitytoworkwiththemonsavingwater. Here are some water conservation tipsthatcanbeappliedwithimmediate effect: >> Turn the tap off between washing your face, brushing your teeth or shaving. >> Taking a five-minute shower a day, instead of a bath, will consume onethird of the water used for bathing in

a bath tub, thus saving up to 400 litres a week. >> Use low-flow showerheads, dualflush toilet mechanisms and water-efficient washing machines. >> Kettles should not be filled to the brim, but they should contain just enough water for your needs. This will reduce your electricity bill as well. >> Don’t over-fill containers like cooking pots as this may result in the use of more energy to heat the water. >> Reducing the toilet flush volume can alone save 20% of total water consumption. EPWP is one of many programmes offered by government to alleviate poverty and provide income relief through short-term to medium-term work opportunities for the unemployed. Taking place at the iLembe Auditorium in KwaDukuza, the EPWP workshop was, according to iLembe’s Project Management Unit manager Ndumiso Mkhize, aimed at finding ways to improve the overall performance of the programme in the region. “We are here to share information with contractorsaswellasconcernsandchallengessowe can move forward as a district and not have certain areas and communities doing well and others not,” he said. Nqobile Makhathini, a social sector facilitator from the Department of Public Works said the programme was mainly for the unemployed and unskilled. “The main purpose is for the people to acquire experience and earn an income to improve their livelihood,” she said.

Jingle bells, Santa smells, Rudolph laid an egg A CONTACT of mine from work asked me about the topic of my first column. I was stark for ideas so I asked her for an idea and she said, : “The fake Christmas spirit and especially the cost of a leg of lamb”. I thought why not, so this one, my friend, is especially for you. Now I'm no expert on Christmas or the goings on of the time when it was introduced, but I'm pretty sure in the

time of the Pagans and what not, people didn't have tons of cash or in the case of most today, plastic, to buy themselves into severe debt. Dang, those people barely had maize to eat or sell or whatever they did with it back then. So here we are, the “consumer cult generation”, buying ourselves into a big fat hole. Just so you know, I'm no exception, however, I shop all year

long, but the stuff people buy at this time of the year is down right weird. Gifting gifts to their boss’ dog and what not. I'm sure that was not the idea of Christmas all those many years ago - spend yourself silly and then end up broke by mid January. I mean, how many foot spas can one person buy and why? I've always thought family, friends and unison and having a jol off work was about all

Too much unnecessary funds wasted on Blythedale Beach music party IT is incomprehensible that in excess of R200 000 was squandered on a beach music party at Blythedale Beach this past weekend. The KwaDukuza Municipality is allegedly bordering on being bankrupt, according to sources, and now squander money on projects such as

this.

The towns, especially Stanger, is in a shocking condition. Apartfromshamefullysquandering of our ratepayers’ funds, the majority of people came in Durban and Maphumulo registered vehicles. There was zero toilet facilities, ze-

Child Welfare South Africa (KZN) addresses death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo THE horrific death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo has cast the spotlight on the shocking incidences of child abuse that we, in Child Welfare movement, face on a daily basis.

There has been wide scale condemnation and with it the apportioning of blame. If there is blame to be apportioned, then we as a community in general should take collective responsibility. This death shows the wanton deprivation that is prevalent within the society and need for collective effort. This case has also highlighted

the plight that the Child and Family Welfare Societies face with regards to insufficient funding to fulfill its mandate. Thefundingthatsocietiesreceive bywayofSubsidyfromtheKwaZuluNatal Department of Social Development ranges between 47 to 52 percent of the organisation’s operating costs. The deficit has to be met through fundraising initiatives. This issue has been raised on numerous platforms bothprovinciallyandnationallywith little or no success. The Child Welfare Societies are

this time should be about - mostly the having a jol off work part. Who doesn't want to spend awesome summer days basting at the beach...I'll tell you who...everyone! Malls are much better suited to everyone, no heat thanks to air conditioning and plenty of people to show off to, even if they don't know you and don't particularly care. I plan to do my level best not to mall outandfalloutoftouchwithmyhappy side this festive season. Beach days and warm nights with the people who matter to me - that's my vibe. Take a breathe and join me friends, appreciate the nature of things and forget the malls. PS.The price of a leg of lamb is so high simply because people make it so. Demand is high therefore prices are high. Everyone's out to make a buck.

In Loving Memory of

Bobby Dhaver 2 Years

18/09/1945-02/12/2012

My beloved husband, our precious father, granddad and brother. You left an empty house, an empty chair, a father’s love, no longer there. A broken heart, tear filled eyes. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. The times we shared, the laughs we had. Things we miss when we think of you. Forever to be cherished are the treasures of the past, for they’ll always be kept alive in our hearts and hen the treasures go, we’ll fondly remember the joy that they brought in our memories forever. Life will never be the same without you, We will always love you, Dad. Sadly missed by your wife, Lutchmee, children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and sisters.

Algooram Rambaran

16/02/1942-24/12/2013 Dad you were our pillar, our strength, our rock. You gave off your very best to everyone in need yet you took nothing back. You had a heart of gold. “Family” meant everything to you. God knew what he did was the best for you. Now your hard working hands and legs are at eternal peace. No words, no matter how heartfelt can describe what you meant to us or the loving bond we had. Now we know you will be watching down on us and be our guiding light. You will always be the hero and love of our lives. You will always and forever be remembered our dearest Dad by all those whose lives you have touched. We love and miss you dearly. Dearly missed by your loving wife Dhuri, sons Pravesh & Anesh, daughter Anusha, daughters-in-law Molly & Premila, son-in-law Sandhir and grandchildren: Preshen, Shanice, Naveen, Akshay, Shayleen, Shresthi & Yuvthi & granddaughter-in-law Ranjeetha.

Sabrina Abraham and Austin Lee Govender.

In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory Meenachie Govindaraju (Lali) 21/01/1939-21/11/2014 They say memories are golden, well that may be true. We never wanted memories, we only wanted you. In life we loved you dearly. In death we love you still. In our heart you hold a space no one can fill. Our family chain is broken, life is not the same but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. Those of you who have a mother, love her while you may. The world is a different place once she’s gone away. No tears or love can ever wake her again. You and your family are kindly invited to attend the 15th & 16th Day Memorial Ceremony of the late Meenachie Govindaraju (Lali) Date: Friday, 05th December 2014 & Saturday, 06th December 2014 Time: 6-8pm Venue: 28 Clover Road, Stanger Manor Family and friends are requested to please accept this as a personal invitation.

Sadly missed by family and friends.

Mr. D. Murugan Sorrow's in life are many but losing you was for worse than any. You fell asleep without saying any farewell words, no time to say goodbye. Little did we know that morning will bring sorrow to us and joy to God cause he choose the best. You were simply gone to soon & only God knows WHY??? It broke our hearts to lose you DAD, but you didn't go alone, a part of us went with you when God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your smile, joke, laughter fill our hearts. Your love is still is still our guide, and though we cannot see, you are always at our side guiding us. You are special & will always be DAD. The best DAD anyone could have asked for. We love & miss you. Our family chain has broken, and nothing can fill your space and nothing seems the same, but when God call us one by one our links will join once again, and we will reunite in HEAVEN. May you be the angel watching over all of us. You and your family are kindly invited to attend the Yearly Memorial Ceremony of the late Mr. D. Murugan Date: Time: Venue:

Friday, 05 December 2014 10-11:30am Happy Valley

Family and friends are requested to please accept this as a personal invitation. Sadly missed by your wife, 8 children, 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Darnall hosts glittering awards banquet Guest of honour KwaDukuza deputy mayor, councillor Dolly Govender presents the most dedicated award to Samson Moonsamy. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

WEEKLY REPORTER

D

ARNALL United Volleyball Club hosted a glittering awards banquet on Saturday night honouring players, officials, sponsors and patrons. Brandon “Pops”Naidoo, speaking on behalf of manager, Vinesh Geanballey said: “There have been ups and downs throughout the 2014 season, but although we did not win the league, we were offered an opportunity of developing a sense of brotherhood, both on and off the courts. “The success of the club must be attributed to the kind generosity of Trevor Sinivasen who readily

ploughed thousands of rand into the club and pledged his commitment to the Darnall United VC for the next five years.” Guest of honour deputy mayor of KwaDukuza councillor Dolly Govender, a keen sports woman in her heydays who excelled in netball, athletics, shot putt and javelin in her high school days, said: “It is important that as players and officials we leave behind a legacy. “ThelateChinGovenderwhowas responsible for training our champion boxer in KwaZulu-Natal, Tap Tap Makhatini left behind a legacy and similarly, we must always strive to leave behind a legacy for others to follow.”

She encouraged parents to give their children support in sport and encouraged the women in Darnall to play volleyball and affiliate a team in the league in KwaDukuza. President of KwaDukuza Volleyball Association, Isaac Abraham congratulated Darnall, who emerged KDSA Social league runners-up in their first year since joining the association at the beginning of 2014. They avenged their league disappointment after beating newly crowned league champions, Sunbrook in the Moon & Sons Agencies K.O. Cup. He encouraged the leadership and players to invest in the youth. Abraham said: “Darnall boast a wealth of talented youngsters and it is important that we teach and nurture them in the game of volleyball in ensuring the sustenance of the club.” Samuel Moonsamy was over the moon after he scooped the most dedicated player award. Skipper Duran Moodaly claimed the MVP (most valuable player) award. Nishendra “Niknaks” Dhaver was adjudged the players player of the year. Certificates of appreciation was given to all sponsors and patrons of the club including Trevor Sinivasen, Dylan Govender, Indira Devi Hooblal, Hilton of BMW Used Spares, Nitesh Arjun of NForce Security, Theolan Moodley of GR Group and Dhiraj Singh of Singh’s Mutton Market.

The KwaDukuza male netball outfit were crowned champions in the Ilembe Netball tournament held at the KwaDukuza netball courts.

WEEKLY REPORTER ILEMBE Netball hosted a bumper Ilembe District netball tournament at the KwaDukuza netball courts on Saturday which brought down the curtains on a successful netball season. The cream of the netball players from each of the four local municipalities (KwaDukuza; Ndwedwe; Maphumulo and Mandeni) converged at the netball courts to strut their netball shooting skills. The Ilembe netball team which will be participating in the 2014 SALGA Games in Dundee next week was invited to participateinthetournamentinthehopeofgiving those players an opportunity of gelling together as a unit ahead of the provincial tournament. President of Ilembe Netball Ivy Khumalo said: “The success of Saturday’s tournament must be attributed to kind generosity of the Department of Sport and Recreation (for the sponsorship of prizes and refreshments, provision of a sound system and medical assistance), the Mandeni Municipality (transport), KwaDukuza Municipality (transport and sponsorship of prizes for the KwaDukuza male team), Ilembe District Municipality (sponsorship of refreshments for the Ilembe Salga outfit), KwaDukuza and Ilembe Sports Confederation, technical officials and volunteers.” Khumalo added that despite the success of the tournament there were many challenges facing teams with most of the players digging deep into their pockets to pay for hired transport. She appealed to all four local municipalities, especially Ndwedwe and Maphumulo to provide transport for their teams in future in the hope of developing the game of netball.

WEEKLY REPORTER THE beautiful game of soccer, under the aegis of KwaDukuza Local Football Association, is marred by inept referees. On Saturday in a KLFA Premier League game between Tornado and Tigers Football Club yet another horrendous display of poor refereeing cost Tornado three points, who had to settle for a share of the 2-2 stalemate. Khumbuzo Siyangaphi broke the deadlockinthe15thminutetogiveTigers a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Nhlahla Msimang was deemed to have been offsideandthelinesmanimmediately raised his flag. The referee looked at the linesman and allowed play to go. After Msimang scored to level the scores at 1-1, the referee allowed the goal to stand and came to consult with her assistant. After a chat which lasted almost five minutes, the linesman threw his flag on the ground and walked away. After being intimidated by the Tigers players and coach the referee changed her decision and ruled that Msimang was offside. Tornado threw a tantrum and the referee walked out of the game. Senior referees who were scheduled to officiate the SAFA Ilembe games an hour later approached the referee to advise her that if she overruled the linesman in the first instance then she must let the goal stand. But, she failed to take the logi-

After a lengthy discussion with Mhlongo, she returned to the field of play, adjudging Msimang to be offside. A dejected Tornado coach, Sphamandla Mazibuko said: “Where on earth have you seen referees walk out for more than 15 minutes and consult with the president of an organisation before returning to the match. “We pay more than a thousand rands for affiliation and pay the referees for every match, not to get this kind of treatment. “How can you referee a game dressed up jeans and expect to give one hundred percent? “Officials of KLFA must get a referees board in place and appoint referees for every game, not such pick someone from the ground looking for a quick buck”. Magnum Mngadi, KLFA competitions co-ordinator, was not available for comment at time of going to press. Meanwhile, Doringkop notched upanimpressive3-1winagainstJunior Stars. Nadasen inspires Ilembe to victory >> Proud coach praises his team’s efforts WEEKLY REPORTER

M

AN-of-the-match Alveiro Nadasen inspired Ilembe to an impressive 154-runs victory against Phoenix in a KwaZuluNatal Challenge League game played at the Rainham Ground in Phoenix on Sunday. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. They were rewarded with two early wickets in the first five overs. Steven Jacobs was caught at silly mid-wicket by Cameron Govender off the bowling of Ryan Siripath for 6 runs in the third over and debutante Mohamed Hoosen (5) was adjudged LBW to a Siripath delivery in the fifth over. Nadasen and Preshen Rampersad steadied the Ilembe innings, putting

on a solid 49-runs partnership for the third wicket before Rampersad was trapped LBW to a Safikumar Thusanaramin delivery in the 16th over. Yusuf Ismail joined Nadasen at the crease and this pair showed scant respect for the Phoenix attack, taking the tally from 63/3 to 142/4 before Ismail (24) was caught behind by wicket-keeper Yastheer Maharaj off the bowling of Matthew Naidoo. Naidoo claimed his 2nd victim after trapping Lucky Gebane LBW for 5 runs. Nadasen notched up a brilliant century (102 runs) which included seven fours and two massive sixes before offering a simple catch to the keeper off the bowling of Naidoo. Mohamed Mhlongo misjudged a perfect delivery by Ganas and was stumped by Maharaj. Desigan Pillay

soon followed Mhlongo, scoring just threerunsbeforebeingcaughtbyMaharaj off the bowling of Siripath. Sirpath claimed his fourth victim after clean bowling Dilloin Rautenbach for 10 runs. With rain threatening, Ilembe took the gamble of declaring their innings at 187/9 in the 37th over. Siripath was the pick of the Phoenix bowlers claiming 4/36 from7 overs. He received good support from Naidoo who claimed 3/32 from 6 overs. Chasing 188 runs for victory (at a rate of 3, 76 runs per over), the hosts were left red-faced after being bundledoutforapaltry33runsinthe24th over. Rautenbach (3/18 from 6 overs) were outstanding with the ball for Ilembe. Ali Sher wrapped up the Phoenix tail claiming 2/2 from 6 overs. Manager of the Ilembe outfit, NR

Singh heaped praise upon his charges, but singled out the performance of centurion Nadasen, who was responsible for securing the bonuspoint for the visitors.
