New beginnings at Woodmead development

The site plan for the entire Wood mead In tegrated Housing Develop ment project. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

>> ‘We are also excited about Woodmead becoming a hub for growth...’ JYOTHI LALDAS

AFTER years of waiting and watching, the Woodmead Integrated Housing Development project finally launched in grand style at the Etete site last Friday. Invested officials from Standard Bank, National Treasury, Urban Housing and the KwaDukuza Municipality gathered at the already constructed two-bedroom show house on site. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and Standard Bank KZN provincial director Toy Mzimela together with the local ward councillorGNMbonambiofficially cut the ribbon to mark the start of the project. The project forms part of government’s initiative to integrate South African society by delivering decent human settlements for a better quality of life. The Woodmead partnership is a mixed use development, which includes residential, industrial, retail and commercial components. Since the conception of the project the Sasko Bakery has been completed at the site and forms part of the industrial component. The project has potential for 802 affordable housing units in the area where bulk services are already available and in total could boast 2 500 residential stands. However, the entire reach of the project is 320 hectares. Aside from housing the development will include a 15 000sqm shopping mall and a dedicated transport node.

The municipality is spending R45 million through its Neighbourhood Development Grant for infrastructure development on the project, this aside from the investment by the private sector. The municipality has also recently completed a R9 million access road upgrade in the area specifically for the project. Currently, there is a contractor on site working on the public transport facility, which is being built to enhance the commercial node. The launch of the first phase of the Woodmead residential component comprises 224 units. Speaking at the launch, head of Affordable Housing and Pension Backed Lending Product at Standard Bank Group Nolwazi Nzama said home ownership is the cornerstone of a strong community. “Standard Bank wants people to own their homes and to have a stake in their future. We are confident that this development will unlock the potential home owners within our community. We are also excited about Woodmead becoming a hub for growth on the North Coast and in KZN.” An excited Mthembu said the main purpose of the development is to close the gap between the low income, middle income and high income sectors. “Weconcentrateonthelowearners and non-earners and the high earners, but the middle income sector is all but ignored in most communities. They take care of themselves and we forget them,

“This change in the legislation has definitelynegativelyimpactedonmunicipalities; preliminary assessments by some metro municipalities were that increases in a region of about 45,5% will have to be paid by ratepayers over and above the inflation driven rate increases,” said Dzengwa. The city’s revenue department, said it would need to plug a nearly R400 million shortfall. But Murray Hunter from the Right2Know Campaign said it “seems society was asleep at the wheel with this amendment”. “Wemustbecomemoreawareand this can be done by just following

People can see what bills are being discussed and put in their input.” Maurice Smithers, national co-ordinatorofAwethu,asocialjustice networking group for civic groups, said “people’s power” has diminished. “There is no step by step guide to form an active citizenry. All you need is people that are like-minded to get together and then try and gain the additional support from the community, while remaining democratic,” said Smithers. North Coast ratepayer’s associations say they were not aware of the act, but will now be fighting it. Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayer’s Association (DOCRRA) chairman Louis Luyt said the act would just

be a means of “robbing Peter to pay Paul”. “Calling on ratepayers to pay even more is reprehensible. DOCRRA will beseekinglegaladviceonthematter,” he said. Luyt said local municipalities could “default on rates overnight”. “This ‘comfort’ to the municipalities could disappear when ratepayers default on payments due to not being able to afford it. The ratepayers are notnecessarilyrich, alotofpeopleare in debt,” he said. The cash flow of the municipality would dry up, and thus the services, which are already under strain, he added. North Coast KwaDukuza Ratepayer’s Association (NCKDRPA) chairman Ray Millican is also outraged. “The fact that they have installed a new rates act regarding State buildings paying next to no rates has an onerous tone that the government is finally running short of funds due to corruption. “The man in the street will have to bear the burden. This act as defies all logic,” he said.

Motala’s Farm robbers arrested >> Quick thinking police get their men JYOTHI LALDAS FIVE suspected robbers were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after a brazen attack at Motala’s Farm on the outskirts of KwaDukuza. A joint operation by KwaDukuza police assisted by the Durban Flying Squad, Tracker unit and a local security company led to the arrest of the five suspects a few hours after the business robbery was reported. According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker police followed up on information which led them to a house in Reservoir Hills where they found the five suspects. “A safe, computer and electronic appliances believed to be taken during the robbery were recovered.” Naicker said in the early hours of Sunday morning two security guards were on duty at the business premises when

they were approached by the group of suspects. It is alleged that the suspects held the security guards up and removed the safe, computer and electronic appliances. “The suspects also took two vehicles from the premises before they fled the scene. Later, one of the vehicles, a truck, was found abandoned in Shakaville. “The second vehicle was found abandoned at Clermont area near KwaDabeka.” A case of business robbery was opened at the KwaDukuza police station for further investigation. “KwaDukuza police immediately mobilised their members and other units to look for the suspects which led to the arrests,” said Naicker. HE delivery of textbooks for pupils next year is well on track at schools in the iLembe District. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha together with iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe visited Vukile High School and Joel PrimarySchoolintheMaphumuloarea last week where 70 percent of the learning material had already been delivered. The MEC said she was optimistic that before the end of this year the schools in the area will have received all their textbooks for next year. “The reason why we have embarked on this programme is because we want to ensure that we address all the challenges the schools might have regarding the delivery of textbooks before they reopen next year,” said

Stating the facts I

N an article that appeared in a local newspaper recently it has been stated that electricity losses have been going on from the 2010/11 financial year and furthermore, the councillors from the ANC and IFP were furious about these losses.

I would like to remind the residents that the ANC has been and is currently the ruling party of the KwaDukuza Municipality. After being elected as an MF councillor in the 2011 Local Government elections, I have been very vocal with regards to the electricity losses

which then stood at about R23 million. The municipality has since formulated and implemented new measures to reduce such losses. However, itdoesnotrequirearocketscientist to figure out that these measures were not effec-

tive. I have brought this to the attention of the ANC in several full council meetings. I have been bold enough in asking whether the measures are being enforced or officials being inefficient or there being no political will by the ANC to alleviate such great losses. Although the mayor has responded that the measures implemented has been ineffective, he denied that there is political will. May I bring to the attention of the chairperson of the technical services committee, that in most cases you need not search for illegal connections and the culprits as it is a known fact that there are thousands of illegal connections in certain areas by some sectors of the community. These illegal connections traverse roadways and pathways and are clearly visible. In some cases there have even been injuries and deaths due to these illegal connections. Now, are some ward councillors afflicted by blindness or are they safe guarding the voter bank by not reporting the illegal connections? KwaDukuza residents should not expect a miracle in reducing electricity losses as we are well aware the Local Government 2016 elections is approaching and one does not expect the ANC to take drastic measures as this would affect the support in the 2016 elections. So the paying consumers should brace themselves for further increases in electricity tariffs or await bankruptcy of KwaDukuza Municipality. I appeal to the ANC to work in the best interest of rate payers, instead of safe guarding the support to the political party. Furthermore, officialsshouldnotbeunnecessarily blamed for the losses, as some of the high ranking officials are political appointees and they would perform at the master’s will. BB Sing MF councillor

Oscar trial and hypocrisy DURING the course of the Pistorius case, I have often wondered where the ANCWL and Jacob Zuma were during the trial of Leigh Matthews to sympathise with her family as well as all the women who are murdered in this country almost daily. There are no ANCWL people in the courts with the bereaved families and no Zuma contradicting the judge’s decisions. It is only now, because Pistorius is a high-profile case, and there is media and TV coverage worldwide, that they are visible. What a bunch of hypocrites. Eloise

MEC vows to monitor housing project KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Public Works and Human Settlements Ravi Pillay will oversee the implementation of the Ward 1 housing project in KwaDukuza. “I am going to monitor this project, day by day between now and over the next two weeks to see that the commitments that we make happen.” Pillay was speaking at Sakhamakanya in Dorinkop last week reporting on the housing project which will cost government over R260 million. The project is one of the biggest in the province. About1835peoplehavebeenregisteredas beneficiaries. The area was recently hit hard by service delivery protests prompting the speeding up of the project. KwaDukuza council members accompanied the MEC in his very first visit to that area where he promised to offer his fullest support to the community. He said the people of Ward 1 must stand united to overcome challenges. “I also want to appeal to you that as we go into the implementation of this project, nothing comes easily, there are always challenges but it is only when we are united and apply our minds that we overcome the challenges.Iassureyouofmysupport,Iassure you of the departments support, I assure you of the Premiers support. I look forward to the day when the first house is built. “In human settlements, planning goes in phases, quality comes first. We spend time on that because we have learned our lesson from the past, we don’t want to build houses that crack and break down after a few years.” KwaDukuza municipal manager NhlanhlaMdakanewasduetoissuealetter of appointment to the contractor who will do construction work on one proportion of the land available for settlements earlier this month. The contractor is to be introduced to the community next week.

SAA Voyager members earn one SAA Voyager Mile for every one litre of fuel purchased at Total, and these Miles can be redeemed for flights, car rental, spa vouchers and lifestyle products or services. This latest offering offers Total customers a value-added lifestyle experience beyond just the day-to-day necessity of filling up with fuel. SAA Voyager Miles are only available to SAA Voyager members. >> Devotees remember the lessons taught on this auspicious day

S

AI devotees throughout the world will be celebrating the advent of Sathya Sai Baba on Sunday, 23 November. Sathya Sai Baba had taken human form on 23 November 1926, in a remote village of Puttaparthi, in Southern India. From an early age, he began to demonstrate extraordinary, super human powers and displayed profound wisdom regarding spiritual matters. At age 14, he firmly declared that he had taken birth for the express purpose of leading mankind back onto the path of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love and non-violence. Though his fame has spread throughout the world, he resided in Puttaparthi in an Ashram called Prasanthi Nilayam (Abode of Supreme Peace). Sathya Sai Baba established many modern, state-of-the-art hospitals, elementary and secondary schools and majoruniversities, allofwhichprovide servicestoeveryonefreeofcosts.Healso constructed a massive drinking water system for the benefit of millions in villages and cities across India. The message he brings Sathya Sai Baba taught that man’s basic nature is divine and that the purpose of life is the realisation of that divinity. This, he said will occur through leading a moral life, rendering selfless servicetothoseinneedanddeveloping love and respect for all life. He re-emphasised the core principles that formed the foundation of all theworld’sreligions, being, truth, love, rightconduct,peaceandnon-violence. He encouraged devotees to practice

Sathya Sai Baba these human values in their daily lives and set an inspiring example by the way he led his own life. The responsibility for bringing about world peace, rests with the individual. His prescription is simple, yet profound: If there is righteousness in the heart, There will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, There will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, There will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, There will be peace in the world. His Mission Sathya Sai Baba stressed that he is not seeking to establish a new religion

or to direct people towards a particular religion. He encouraged those attracted to his message to “continue worshipping along lines already familiar to you”. He has also said, “Let the different faiths exist and let the glory of God be sung in all languages and tunes that should be the ideal. Respect the differencesbetweenthefaithsandrecognise them as valid as long as they do not extinguishtheflamesofunity.Ifeachperson lives the ideals propounded by the founders of their religion, unaffected by greed or hate, then the world will be a happy and peaceful habitation for mankind.” The Sai Centres are dedicating themselves to creating individuals who are spiritually attuned to the needs and aspirations of their respective religions and who are responsible citizens of the nation. The organisation The Sathya Sai International Organisation is a spiritual one, it recognises the fundamental unity of all the religions. It has centres in over 137 countries. The organisation itself is not important; it exists only for what it gives; an opportunity for searching souls to gather together and find the way to progress along the spiritual path and help others on the same journey. Hyundai, Kia to triple green cars

Doctor sets recovery time for Schumacher

>> ‘Green’ range on offer

E

ARLIER in November Wheels24 reported that Hyundai and sister Korean company Kia will pay the United States government a penalty equivalent to R1.1 billion to end a two-year investigation into "overstated" fuel consumption claims on about a third of its vehicle products. Following the investigation, the automakers announcedaplantotriplethenumberoffuel-efficient cars by 2020, addressing concerns about the pair's green track record and competitiveness in fuel economy. The announcement on Wednesday, 12 November came a week after the pair pledged to raise the fuel economy of their vehicles by 25% by 2020 to meet emissions regulations in the U.S. and Europe and at home in South Korea. It also followed an announcement on Tuesday 11 November that the pair would buy back R6 billion worth of shares in what was widely regardedasanattempttoappeaseinvestorsangered by a R100 billion bid for property for new headquarters. AnalystYimEun-youngofSamsungSecurities said: "Investors have complained about Hyundai's lack of shareholder-friendly policies and communicationaboutitsvision, especiallyafter the land deal. than four-year low on November 5. Kia stock has declined 0.9% while the benchmark index has lost 2.4%. Under last week’s plan, Hyundai and Kia will raise their number of fuel-efficient cars to "at least" 22 by 2020 from seven now. Hyundai, Kia said in a joint statement: "We have set an internal target of making it to number two in the global eco-friendly car market, which is expected to grow from this year's 2.2 million vehicles to 6.4 million in 2020." Hyundai and Kia plan to release 12 models powered by gasoline-electric hybrid engines, expanding the line-up to small cars and sport utility vehicles. The pair's green range will also have six plug-inhybridmid-sizedandcompactcars,two fuel-cell cars and two battery-powered electric cars. — Wheels24.

A DOCTOR who treated Michael Schumacher for nearly six months after the Formula 1 champion struck his head in a skiing fall says the injured exdriv er is no longer in a coma and predicted a possible re covery within three years. JeanFrancois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoble hospital that treated Schumacher after his injury in December 2013, said he has visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerland to track his patient’s progress. Schumacher was with his 14yearold son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock and cracking his helmet. “Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages. We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payen last Thursday. He predicted a convalescence of one to three years. Earlier French F1 commentator JeanLouis Mon cet repeated a report that Schumacher was “waking up very slowly” from the induced coma controlling his serious brain injuries. Moncet said: “I saw his son and he told me Schumi was waking up very slowly, very slowly.”

A man, who allegedly stole Schumacher’s medical records and who was allegedly at tempting to sell them to dif ferent media for $67 000 (about R7 350 000), worked as an executive at a Swiss hel icopter air rescue company, which organised the German sportsman’s transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June. The man, arrested and inter rogated by police, had denied any wrongdoing. He was being detained in a Zurich police holding cell, but was found hanged when officers took him breakfast before a scheduled hearing before a judge.

GROUTVILLE United trounced Rocky Park United 42 in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association (KLFA) Pre mier League game played at the Recrea tion Ground on Sunday. The newly promoted KLFA Division I champs,RockyParkkickedofftheircam paign in the Premier League ranks with a 20 win against Current a fortnight ago and were hoping to notch up backto back league victories. But, Rocky Park took too long to set tle into Sunday’s game and found them selves trailing 20 in the first quarter of the match. After conceding four “soft” goals, goalkeeper Lance Cooper was replaced by Simo Ntanzi who did a sterling job aft er taking over the goalkeeping gloves. Just before the break Reeshen Singh volleyed Rouxney Milligan’s cross into the roof of the net to reduce the deficit. In the 70th minute Ntanzi made a brilliant save to deny Mbuso a hattrick. In the dying minutes of the game Singh

Madrid and Tigers locked horns in the second round of the competition and after a goalless first half, Madrid was awarded a penalty after Pupu Siphiwe was brought down in the box. Fanozi Thusi converted the spotkick to send Tigers crashing out the tourna ment. In the final of the KwaDukuza (Stream A) Madrid snatched a hard fought 10 win against Callies.

Grove End volleyball league champs >> ‘Invincible’ team finishes on top WEEKLY REPORTER

G

ROVE End Volleyball Club were crowned EZE’S Electrical Competitive League (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) champions after snatching a thrilling 25-23; 26-24 win against Randsons on Tuesday night at the association courts. Grove End dethroned reigning champions KSST in 2013 and at the start of the 2014 season KSST were determined to reclaim the title. There was little separating both teams at the end of the third round of competition. But, KSST virtually threw in the towel a fortnight ago after slumping to a humiliating 2-0 defeat to Grove End. They virtually shot themselves in the foot after going down (25-20; 2513) to Randsons a fortnight ago and

were on the receiving end yet again after going down 2-1 on Thursday night. Grove End proved that their competitive league victory was no fluke last season after repeating their feat on Tuesday night. They picked up maximum points against Warriors Sport (who conceded a walkover) on Thursday night to extend their lead at the summit of the log table. Grove End have been virtually invinciblethisseasonnotchinguptwelve league victories from thirteen appearancessincethestartofthe2014season and with two more league matches remaining, they can step off the accelerator and put the champagne on ice beforeuncorkingitaftertheirfinalleague match on Thursday night. President of KwaDukuza Volleyball Association, Isaac Abraham heaped

praise upon the management and players of Grove End, who have been a model of consistency throughout the season. Their commitment to training every Sunday morning paid rich dividends. Meanwhile, Sunbrook took a step closer to clinching the social league title after beating MOB in straight sets (25-13; 25-18) on Tuesday night. Darnall United squandered the opportunity of staying in the race for honours in the social ranks after slumping to a 2-0 defeat to Cool Leaders, but bounced back to winning ways on Thursday night after beating MOB (2521; 14-25; 15-12). Cool Leaders took advantage of Teachers Style loss to Virgo on Tuesday night and leapfrogged them into 3rd spot after beating Virgo in a pulsating 3-setter (22-25; 25-21; 15-11).

Nevil’s Auto suffer backtoback defeat

NEVIL’S Auto Darts Club suffered backto back defeats in the Dilley Puckree memorial Darts League (hosted by KwaDukuza Darts Association). A fortnight ago, the more fancied Nevil’s Auto slumped to a humiliating 2016 defeat at the hands of rookies R & B Gledhow. Their woes continued on Wednesday night when they suffered an embarrassing 2214 defeat against archrivals Isithebe Paints. Isithebe, who lost their opening league fixture against Gledhow United a fortnight agoweredeterminedtogetbackonthewin ningtrail.Theytrouncedtheirrivals51inthe openingframeandquicklydoubledtheirad vantage (102) after repeating their feat in the second frame. At the halfway stage, the writing was on the wall for Nevil’s Auto who were trailing 414 after going down 24 in the third frame. Nevil’s Auto needed a miracle to over

come the early setback. After their below par performance in the first three frames, their hopes of annexing victory dissipated into the black clouds above. Their 42 win in the fourth frame was not enough to salvage the pride of the wounded Nevil’s Auto outfit. Nevil’s Auto showed no mercy for their rivals, sealing their fate after winning the penultimate frame (42), to ex tend their lead. Nevil’s Auto won the “deadrubber match” (final frame) 42, but it was not enough for Sanjay Singh’s charges who suf fered their second straight league loss. Apart from Singh winning four of his six matches, the belowpar performance of Nevil Kisten, Paddy Padayachee and Kuben Naidoo were the contributing factors to Nevil’s Auto 2214 loss. Vinesh Geanballey was the toast of the Isithebe Paints outfit winning five games from six league match

es. He received good support from Nine Pil lay, Vishalin Parmasivan and Jerry Govender who won four games each. Meanwhile, Gledhow United cemented their position at the summit of the log table after securing maximum points (36 points) in their walkover against Darnall Action Sporting. The acid test looms for Gledhow United tonight (Wednesday) when they lock horns with Nevil’s Auto. Victory will guarantee Gledhow United the Dilley Puckree memori al league silverware. Isithebe Paints will be watching this match closely when they entertain Darnall Action Sporting. Should Isithebe Paints win and Gledhow lose their match against Nev il’s Auto, the calculators need to be brought out of the closet to calculate the points ag gregate before announcing the league champion.
