Land Affairs to pay BCR R332 million

One killed in N2 crash

>> Land given back to the Zwelabantu Dube Community Property Association MERVYN KRISHNA

A

FTER years of land claim disputes over the Blythedale Coastal Resort (BCR), Land Claims Court acting Judge AJ Sardiwalla signalled a settlement agreement, which will see the Commission of Restitution of Land Rights, under theministerofLandAffairs,payR332 million to BCR for its 80% shareholding in the property. Themoneywillbeusedtopayback creditors and investors of the resort after the project went into business rescue in October last year. The land, on which the resort was to be built, has officially been given back to the Zwelabantu Dube Community Property Association (ZDCPA). KZN developer and eLan Group CEO Mark Taylor owned a majority share in the resort. Taylor said he was still optimistic that the resort will be built as planned now that the land claim has finally been settled. “I am pretty sure it will go ahead, it is not a foregone conclusion though,” he said. Taylor added, the resort still has R200 million in pre-sale agreements and he is excited at the prospect of fi-

nally beginning construction. Most of the deposits are being held in trusts. He hopes the ZDCPA will reach a decision on a way forward soon. “They are still going through the

Despite a number of years of disputes over the land, Taylor is confident that the relationship between the two parties is good. “There is massive trust even though we have been at loggerheads.

We still believe we are the right partners,” he said. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, the developer doubts that the ZDCPAwillconsidernewplansforthe land. “That would delay proceeding by two years or more,” he said. Looking at the settlement, Taylor believes initial investors will be happy. “After going through a business rescue process, a credit commission was formed to discuss solutions. “After the settlement, it is now a question of fairness but, all the investors will get their initial capital back,” he added. Looking ahead, Taylor is hoping to be part of another success story like that of eLan’s Simbithi Eco-estate in Ballito. According to Taylor, the Blythedale Coastal Resort has the potential to create 10 000 jobs which could support at least 50 000 people. During its 10-year construction phase,100000temporaryjobswillbe created. Workers will be sourced from nearby communities and will receive Seta-accredited training.

Fashion collaborators paint colourful future

T

HE sound of music and colourful creativity is emerging from countless children in rural KwaDukuza courtesy of a successful fashion collaboration between Mr Price, the RedCap Foundation and leadingBritishfashiondesignerHenry Holland. Holland first touched down on South African shores in 2012 for his original Mr Price fashion collaboration, returning the following year for the launch of a range of limited edition dressesinspiredbysomeoftheworld’s most stylish celebrities. Among the celebrity muses was international “it” girl Pixie Geldof, who joined Holland on his tour to South Africa and the RedCap Foundation Schools in KwaDukuza in November 2013. Funds raised from both Mr Price fashion projects has raised over a million rand in the last two years. This has been channeled through the Iciko Arts programme into five

“Beyond Henry visiting us and giving us his valuable time, the sale of his dresses through Mr Price stores contributed towards the expansion of the Iciko Arts Programme, allowing many more learners to experience the joy of arts in their schools.” Sikhumbuzo Khumalo, principal of Zilungisele Primary School in KwaDukuza said Henry’s involvement with the RedCap Foundation has changed the school for the better. “I’m running short of appropriate words to extend my thanks to Henry Holland. His involvement with the RedCap Foundation has changed the school completely.” Everyone is a winner in this tailor-made collaboration where fashion and philanthropy have joined hands to inspire tomorrow’s heroes. RedCap Foundation Primary Schools, namely: Aldinvile, Zilungisele, St Christopher, Kearsney and Nyakana. As arts, drama, dance and music is not a high priority in most low income community schools, the Iciko programmecreatesaspacethatallowsthe talented children the freedom to ignite their creative flare. Iciko teachers have witnessed firsthand how the eager pupils have benefitted from the classroom upgrades. The inspired surroundings have sparked their creativity and the learners love being able to use the colourful art classrooms outside of their normal school classrooms. The extra space and much needed creative materials have also helped them to understand and appreciate art more. Marc Eslick, the RedCap Foundation Manager, highlighted the significance of the time and effort that Holland generously invested into the Iciko Arts Programme.

HE African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) will do battleintheward22by-electionon 2JulytocontroloneofKwaDukuza Municipality’s largest wards. Ward 22 is without a councillor, following the promotion of Ann McDonnell to the KZN provincial legislature. The ward includes Shakaskraal, Tinley Manor, Sheffield, Salt Rock, Fox Hill and Nkobongo and was previously controlled by the DA since its formation in 2011. LastweektheANCregionalsecretary Muzi Sithole announced Rigby Heenan as their by-election candidate while the DA announced Malcolm Hubner as theirs. Sithole said the ANC has givenitselfplentyoftimebeforeselecting a candidate. “Our approach was detailed in that we consulted all sectors in the ward. We needed to hear from the people what their needs are and

then find someone who could meet these adequately in line with our mandate.” Heenan said it was time to join the winning party. “Minority parties are unable to engage with council and the people. The ANC has extended a hand of friendship and it would have been reckless and negligent of me to turn it down. “There are things to be done, and why go in the back door when the front is wide open. “I know the area and I am confident going into the by-election because I believe everyone needs help - from people who need electricity to those who need potholes fixed,” said Heenan. Hubner is currently the ward six DA chairman and is humbled at the prospect of representing ward 22. “If the DA is successful I expect the first six months as councillor will be spent getting to grips with the diversity of the ward and understanding its needs.”

10 foot waves >> Giant swells impact the North Coast

HE North Coast experienced giant swells, reminiscent of the destructive March 2007 storm, last week. Lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu said the waves were “easily eight to 10 feet high” at times. Beaches were closed on 15,16, 21, 22 and 23 June due to rough surf conditions, and becausesomeofthesharknetsweredisturbed, making beaches unsafe. Xulu said there was an incident last week where two local brothers went out on their paddle skis, facing the huge waves at Thompson’s Bay, despite there having been a red flag up to signal danger. In their attempt to get to back line,

they got caught in a side wash. Xulu said one man lost his surfski, while the other was washed onto the

a jet ski from Salt Rock and IPSS Rescue and Netcare paramedics also responded to the scene. “Luckily the brothers were rescued with just minor scratches and were in a stable condition,” said Xulu. A Chaka’s Rock resident, Leon Groenveld, said he could feel the vibrations of the waves at his cliff-side home as they pounded the shore, and that waves damaged part of the cliff at Morewood Cove. A cliff shelf was broken off and landed on the beach below, he said. “Some people had been sitting above the shelf that collapsed, they were very lucky not to be hurt. “The man-made subsoil drains above the cliff face exacerbated the problem, I think. this area,” said Groenveld. North Coast environmentalist Duncan Pritchard said that ‘nothing really special causes this big swell, just offshore storms and winds’. “Thispastswell,Isuspectwasaresult of that big cold front that caused flooding in the Cape, but it moved out to sea before it really got to us,” said Pritchard. He said once out at sea, the wind has a bigger area to blow across and the longer the surface area it blows against, the larger the swell. “So really it was just down to offshore winds, which we didn’t feel, but a couple hundred/thousand kilometres offshore would have been extremely windy to cause this swell”. He said the swell can lurk for days after the wind.

pabilitiesoftheInternetdonot end at learning about people. Gone are the days when school children must go to the library and spend hours paging through dusty copies of Encyclopaedia Brittanica to complete projects — when journalists must leave the sanctity of the office to research a feature piece, and whenbusinessexecutiveshad to drive across town or rely on the postal service to get a contract signed. Everything can be done behind one’s desk while drinking copious amounts of coffee in the eversedentary lifestyle of the 21st century. In the good old days, work at an office would come to a standstill when the electricity went off. Nowadays, thanks to the antics of Eskom, generators are in place to keep computers and essential lights powered up at all times. When the Internet goes down, however, productivity grinds to a haltandtheproverbialwheels fall off spectacularly, leaving office workers with nothing to do but make more coffee, scream at the IT department with increasing voracity as

deadlines approach, and hold one unproductive meeting after another. What does the Internet have in common with nicotine, alcohol, and whoonga? All these commodities are addictive, though some perhaps less destructively so than others. While a lack of internet will not leave you feeling like ants are crawling under your skin, as I believe is the case with whoonga, it certainly makes highly-strung people more uppity than ever. Between social media, Candy Crush, Reddit and material of an illicit nature, the internet has something to appeal to that part of every soul which is conducive to addiction. Where to next in the digital revolution? Will we become walking WiFi boosters? Will the average Joe trade in their rose-coloured glasses for Google glasses? Who cares? Turn off your computer, go outside and enjoy the blissful sunshine of winter in the climatic paradise of KwaZuluNatal.

HEworldsofwork, play, shopping and research have all undergone a revolution over the past 20 or so years, as a result of the evolution of the internet. Technophiles and technophobes alike have been flung into a new, exciting and sometimes scary world. In this new sphere, someone at the other side of the world can steal money from your bank account at the push of a button or access your mailbox on a whim and send rude messages to your friends. When I arrive at work on a Monday morning, my inbox generally has at least 100 new messages awaiting my attention, and I assume the same canbesaidforthe20orsopeople with whom I share an open-plan office. If the internet and e-mails did not exist, those seated at the back of this office would have to swim through stacks and piles of 2000-odd envelopes that would have arrived containing our mail. In that sense, tree huggers, office cleaners and those who can’t swim can be everlastingly grateful for the arrival of the internet and electronic mail. The Internet is solely responsible for the ever-widening generation gap that exists within families, with the elderlyneedingtobe informed that an Ipad is not a feminine hygiene product, and that WiFi is not a question followed by an expression of disgust or QUICK & EASY APPLICATION IMMEDIATE outrage. THERE is a lot of confusion about the meaning of the term RSVP. Many guests see this on invitations and do not know what they are supposed to do. The RSVP, found on all kinds of invitations aren’t put in for a decorative purpose, quite the contrary. They imply a request. Not responding to a request may be regarded as bad etiquette. The problem we experience is that even if you put an RSVP request on an invitation, guests don’t do anything about it. This leads to the problem that hosts can’t tell how many guests plan to attend the function. WHAT RSVP MEANS: The term RSVP comes from the French expression “respondez s’il vous plait”, meaning “please respond/ reply”. If RSVP is written on an invitation it means that theinvitedguestmusttellthehostwhethertheyplan to attend the function.

7

Itdoesnotmeantorespondonlyifyouareattend ing, and it does not mean respond only if you are not attending (the expression “regrets only” is reserved for this instance). It means the host needs a definite head count for the planned event, and needs it by the date specified on the invitation. Some invitations carry the host’s telephone number, so you can call with your reply. *WHY it’s INCONSIDERATE not to RSVP An incomplete list of respondents can cause nu merous problems for a host including difficulty in planning food quantities, issues relating to minimum guarantees with caterers and difficulty in planning appropriate seating, among other things. So the next time you see RSVP on an invitation you receive, please contact your host and respond promptly. K Reddy

Ultimately, only one team could emerge winners and Di Mather, from Boston’s head office, was invited to arbitrate. Once the debate concluded and final arguments were presented, Mather announced the boy’s team as the winning team. Mather was impressed by the standard of the arguments and with the valid points presented by both teams. She thanked each member of the teams for their participation. The debate was followed by a general knowledge quiz which involved all students. The quiz ended in a tie between two teams. The winners of the debate and the quiz each received prizes.

VOMITING is a very common, and frequently encountered, symptom. The causes are vast, ranging from trivial (usually selflimit ing) to very severe and life threatening. In children, especially infants, it is vitally important to distinguish vomiting, from re gurgitation. Regurgitation is the effortless expulsion of gastric contents. Beforefindingthecause, yourhealthcare practitionershouldfirstestablishthehydra tion status of your child, and attend to any life threatening complications. Repeated vomiting, coupled with no flu id intake (with or without diarrhoea) can leadtoyourchildbeingseverelydehydrated. Vomitingcanleadtoarangeofmetabol ic and electrolyte complications. The acidbase balance within the blood stream is altered, as well as changes to the levelsofpotassium(K+),sodium(Na+)and chloride (Cl), all of which are important in the body’s normal functioning. Potassium is required for muscle tone, and once the level of potassium drops, your child becomes very weak and floppy, unable to sit, stand or walk. You healthcare practitioner should take the time to establish a few characteristics of the vomiting, which may assist in finding the cause for the vomiting, and assessing the severity of the cause.

If your child has bilious vomiting, this could indicate a gastrointestinal obstruc tion. Blood in the vomitus could indicate a gastrointestinal bleed. The causes varies from the newborn and infant, compared to children and adoles cents. Below is a simple outline of the causes. Note the diverse organ systems that can be affected, giving rise to vomiting. ACUTE VOMITING Neonate / Infant with fever Sepsis / meningitis / urinary tract infec tion Tonsillitis / otitis media Gastroenteritis IF NO SIGNS OF SEPSIS Pyloric stenosis / outlet obstruction Metabolic causes Neurological causes Endocrine causes Child / Adolescent with fever (otherwise well) Gastroenteritis, especially if diarrhoea is present WITH LETHARGY / ALTERED MENTAL STATUS Neurological causes Metabolic causes Endocrine causes Drugs, toxins, alcohol RECURRENT VOMITING Infants

The management will ultimately de pend on the cause. In most cases, the vomit ing is selflimiting and will not warrant any medications, except maintaining hydration. Hydration can be maintained with oral sips (if the child is able to drink), alternatively, intravenous fluids may be necessary. Pharmacological agents are not usually recommended, as this may mask the signs of a serious disease, as well as the undesir able sideeffects in children. Dr Singh answers your CHIROPRACTIC questions >> Know more about chiropractic treatment and the benefits of it FACTS ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC Chiropractic is an evolving profession which deals with the neuromusculoskeletal system. This means that chiropractors treat all issues related to the spinal column, including nerves, spinal discs as well as muscles, ligaments and tendons in and around this area. In addition, chiropractors also treat ALL joints in the body from the jaw (temporomandibular joint) to the baby toe. Chiropractic IS different. And it is this difference that has brought results to millions since 1895 and caused them to rethink the nature of health and the role of chiropractic care in it. Chiropractic is scientific, thriving, safe and takes a natural approach to better health that avoids drugs or surgery. It SUPPORTS THE BODY and assists it in relearning its natural ability to be able to heal itself. How long does treatment take? The first consultation with Dr Singh takes, on average, about 30 minutes, and a treatment session about 15-20 minutes but can be longer when needed, this will vary according to your condition and your needs. How long will it take to get better? Your recovery is dependent on many factors: *Your presenting complaint/problem *The length of time that you have had it for *Any other treatment procedures that may have been done by other practitioners and the side effects, if any *Your own commitment to any rehabilitative exercisesandhometreatmentthatisaskedfor you to carry out *And maintenance visits which your chiropractor may recommend. It also depends on the healing abilities of different individuals. Some may show changes in a few days/weeks, some may take months. These may also be influenced by the duration that you would have had the discomfort. For whom is chiropractic suitable? Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everyone, including new-born babies, the elderly, pregnant women and sports enthusiasts. Once you are better, your chiropractor will help you to maintain your own health, and keep your body working as it should, by offering exercise and lifestyle advice for you to follow in the future. What is the popping noise of the adjustment? When the two surfaces of a joint are moved apart rapidly, as happens in a chiropractic adjustment, there is a change of pressure within

the joint space. This may sometimes cause a bubble of gas to 'pop' - but this sound is not significant, and does not hurt. Will treatment hurt? Adjustments (chiropractor equivalent to manipulation),whencarriedoutcorrectlybyaqualified chiropractor, is not painful. If you have acute muscle spasm, when even the lightest touch hurts, there may be some discomfort after the muscular knots are released. Sometimes, if you have had a problem for some time, you may feel sore whilst your body starts to adjust after the treatments but not during the adjustment. Your chiropractorwilltellyouifthisislikelytohappen. The beginning of care can be likened to going to the gym for the first few times, it aches but overall your body is healing and improving and you feel better for it. Are all patients adjusted in the same way? No. Your treatment care plan will be recommended to your specific needs. Should I bring my family for chiropractic checks? Yes.Thestrengthofchiropracticisthatitcanhelp prevent discomfort, pain and even disease, and is suitable for everyone. It is entirely appropriate

to visit a chiropractor even if you have no pain, as restrictions in movement can often be detected before symptoms appear. Is chiropractic treatment safe, even if I've already had surgery? Chiropractic is remarkably safe when treatment is carried out by a properly qualified practitioner. Your chiropractor is trained to recognize conditions which require referral elsewhere, and can treatyouevenaftersurgery.InmanycasesChiropractors can prevent unnecessary spinal surgery. Why should I return if I'm feeling fine? Your chiropractor has treated you, so allowing your body to heal, but if you continue the lifestyle which caused the original condition, regular treatment should also continue. Would you maintain your car with tune ups or teeth with check ups or wait until full breakdown and then hope to fully resolve the problem? Or would you make sure all stayed well and required much less finance and time to fully restore and enjoy good joint and muscular health? Our bodies are being used daily and placed through much strain without receiving the necessary exercise and nourishment and healing time that it requires. When

your pain has ceased, the idea is for you to maintain your new lifestyle. Eventually, you will visit your Chiropractor at least once in 6months, depending on the state of your spine and health. Can I adjust myself? Is there anything wrong with me 'cracking ' my neck or back myself? You cannot properly control an adjustment to yourself and your relief may only be temporary and psychological. Hearing the cracking sound does not mean that you have carried out an adjustment successfully, generally, patients end up moving joints that are already moving well, thereby, inducing a wear and tear. You can easily be contributing to development of osteoarthritis if this is done. If you feel you want to 'crack' your joints, it is because you need an adjustment. For a consult and treatment consult DR NATASHA SINGH. STRESS plays a huge role in the lives of all. It has been the no.1 killer in the world leading to heart disease. The easiest and healthiest way to combat stress naturally is by Exercising, Maintaining a balance of body, mind, and eating healthy. ITH Boston City Campus & Business College now open for mid-year registrations for diplomas and degrees, Boston’s marketing manager, Natalie Rabson, uses the opportunity to reflect on how attaining a higher education can help address the issue of unemployment. “According to Adcorp labour market economist, Loane Sharp, the retrenchment rate is now at a 10-year high – in January alone our economy shed 36290 jobs – while the unemployment rate increased from 22.5 per cent in 2008 to 25.20 per cent in the first quarter of 2014. Then there’s the recent news that youth unemployment had soared from 32.7 percent to 36.1 percent in the six years from 2008 to 2014,” says Rabson. For Rabson, the importance of attaining a higher education has a twofold significance that can both directly and indirectly address these issues of unemployment and retrenchment. “Firstly, the relevance of a vibrant higher education sector is recognised internationally and investment therein, whether through individuals who take up further studies or through government funding, promotes economic prosperity and greater employment. Secondly, we need to remind ourselves just how important a relevant qualification is when looking for work or merely trying to stay secure in one’s current job. Unemploymentandretrenchmentstatistics are showing us a rather desperate reality and especially for the unemployed, it’s time to step up,” adds Rabson. “You should waste no time in assessing your situation. Start by asking: Am I on the right career path? Are there areas in my specific skills set where I need to improve? Do I have the proper qualifications and tools to apply for a job with confidence? Is a matric certificate, diploma or degree enough in our highly competitive market? And, where do I want to be in a few years from now? Only after addressing these questions should one make the decision on what to do next and how to do it best,” says Rabson. Alarmingly, these days a relevant qualification doesn’t automatically guarantee your employability, especially if you don't have work experience to go along with it. That in itself is no reason not to study further; gaining a competitive edge and acquiring the necessary skills do after all form the foundation of employability. And to those who are fortunate enough to think they have secure jobs, Rabson has the following message: “Don’t be too comfortable. Considering the current volatile nature of our economy, many companies, big and small, have moved into ‘survival mode’. Retrenchment is a natural result thereof,” said Rabson. Rabson said acquiring a higher educationhashelpedmanystarttheirownbusinesses and grow these into successful companies. Statistics from the Department of Trade & Industry show that these small and medium enterprises contribute between 52 to 57% to the Gross Domestic Product and account for approximately 61% of employment. “Entrepreneurship definitely does seem to be one possible cure for the unemployment rate. If more people had the drive and skills to start their own businesses, things might be less dire. The other reality is that these businesses operate in a highly competitive market and whilst some do become successful entrepreneurs without having studied further, many realise that acquiring a higher education is essential for survival,” added Rabson. Mid-year registrations for diplomas and degreesatBostonCityCampus&BusinessCollege are now officially open for everyone and run until 25 July. Prospective students don’t have to wait until next year to start their studies; they can still start in 2014 and immediately after registration has closed on 25 July. Not only will this give full time students a head start, but also those who are currently employed and want to further their studies on a part time basis. For those students who have applied to study a Unisa degree through Boston and have already registered at Unisa, tuition will also start in July. Do note that whilst the closing date for Unisa applications was on 25 April, the closing date for registrations at Unisa is 11 July. Boston now also offers two brand new industry relevant courses: a Diploma in Business Management and a Diploma in Events Management.

Luthuli Museum celebrates World Environment Day >> Pupils get their hands dirty and clean up community

P

RIMARY school pupils from 15 different schools were told to ‘raise your voice not the sea level’ at the World Environment Day celebration at the Luthuli Museum recently. The instruction, from guest speaker Gcobisa Feke, a health and safety co-ordinator from Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM), was in line with the 2014 theme for the day commemorated all over the world. Feke urged pupils to be creative and write a song to contribute toward

raising awareness about global warming and rising sea levels. She also helped pupils understand what global warming is, the causes and what each member of society can do in a small way to stop the effects. She told pupils to plant trees and toalwaysrememberthethreeR’s–reduce, reuse and recycle. Then it was time to hear from the pupils with six representatives from different eco-clubs giving short presentations about their activities at the school.

Thereafter, armed with black bin bags and gloves, the pupils took to Nokukhanya Luthuli Street and began cleaning up, picking up everything from beer cans, plastic packets and boxes. In total 21 bags of rubbish were collected from the area directly outside the museum. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

TEVEN Jacobs was over the moon after being voted batsman of the 2013/2014 season in the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (Stream Two) at a glittering awards banquet hosted by KZN Cricket Union at the Sahara Kingsmead presidential suite on Friday night. Jacobs joined the North Coast Cricket Academy (under the watchful eye of coach Desigan Pillay) at the age of 13. He made great strides in the game impressing his coach as a batsman and joined the Manor ‘B’ senior side in 2004. After just two seasons he was promotedtotheManor‘A’squadandthere

has been no turning back for him. Apartfromimpressingwiththebat, Jacobs showed tremendous potential as a wicket-keeper, but had to play second fiddle to first choice keeper, Riaan Latchram. In 2009 Jacobs was promoted to opening batsman at Manor Cricket Clubandwasgiventhefullreinsasfirst choice wicket-keeper. He seized the opportunity with both hands and recalls with fond memories of taking a brilliant catch, making a stunning dive on the leg side to dismiss the talented KwaZulu-Natal Country cap, Charl Groenewald off the bowling of Mohamed Mhlongo in the 2000/2001 season. Jacobs potential as an opener for Manordidnotgounnoticedandhewas

afforded the opportunity to open the batting for Ilembe Cricket Union in the KZN Challenge League (Stream Two) at the start of the 2012/2013 season. His top score in the 2012/2013 season was 90 against Clares at the Asherville Ground. Manager of the Ilembe Cricket squad, NR Singh said: “Jacobs has a terrific eye and his ability to take on the fiery pace of any opening bowler, especially the swinging ball has been the hallmark of his tremendous talent.” In the 2013/2014 season he amassed a whopping 370 runs at an average of 33 runs and it came as no surprise when he was voted batsman of the season in the KZN Challenge League. The match against Phoenix in the past season stands out vividly in the mind of Jacobs. He said: “As an opener the wickets around me fell at regular intervals, but I held my nerve carrying my bat until the 9th batsman came to the crease top-scoring with 65 runs to guide Ilembe to victory.” Jacobs attributed his performance with the bat to his coach and mentor Desigan Pillay. His cricketing hero is Australia’s batting sensation, Michael Clark. The KZN Cricket Union posthumously honoured Mahalingam “Child” Govender for his contribution to the KZN Umpiring Board. Dolphins skipper Morne van Wyk was voted player of the season.
