April 2014 at the Saverite supermar ket in Upper Tongaat, along the Noordsburg Road. Five men, said by police and wit nesses to have been dressed in SAPS uniform and vests, held up store owner Selvan Reddy to steal about R300 000 in pension payout money. An Umhlali SAPS statement said Nishen Maharaj and his wife Maureen drove into the scene of the robbery and were shot when trying to flee. When Nishen spedoffinhisToyota bakkie to escape the men, they openedfirewithAK47s. Maureen was shot in the head and killed instantly. Nishen was hit in his leg, drove a few kilometres and crashed into a banana plantation. He died a short while later from loss of blood. Sishi’s court case has been post poned to 29 July. A MAN facing charges for his involve ment in the shooting of a husband and wife during a robbery in Upper Tongaat in April was granted bail last Wednesday. Ayanda Mfundo Sishi (32) ap peared at the Umhlali Periodical Court after being held at the Umhlali police station since his arrest on 13 May. He faces two counts of murder and one of robbery with aggravating cir cumstances. Sishi was granted R10 000 bail, which police say his mother paid. The state, under relief magistrate Justice Mnguni, argued there were “no exceptional circumstances” that would allow leeway for bail. Sishi’s lawyer, a representative from Mazomba Attorneys, quoted similar cases where bail had been granted and won his case. The attack where the couple was murdered occurred at about 7am on 1

ENDER rights activist, Jan Mabuyakhulu (40), is using his ‘Walk the Talk’ campaign to fight the abuse of women and children. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu welcomed the genderbased violence ambassador and his campaign last week when Mabuyakhulu strode into KwaDukuza on his way to Durban. Mabuyakhulu started walking the 156 kilometres from his home in Mtubatuba on 1 June. His crusade follows the brutal rapes and murders of two of his friend’s daughters last year. Fuelled by what he describes as a “senseless act of violence against people who were close to me” he last year embarked on a 224km journey from Mtubatuba to Durban, and again from Johannesburg to Cape Town. He says this is his way of “waving the flag against abuse”. KwaDukuza has become one of his stops. Mthembu commended his bold efforts, describing him as a gamechanger in the defense of women and children’s rights. “We are humbled to be with

WADUKUZA resident Anesh Ramothar, never got to see thepotofgoldattheendofhis rainbow. Cunning herbalists Yunus Phiri, James Ali and Jassia Poster took advantage of Ramothar’s superstitious belief and relieved him of R10 000, which he had borrowed. The incident started with a dream Ramothar’s friend had in which his grandmother told him to go to Hyde Park Beach in New Guelderland and dig up seven pots of gold. When the friend told Ramothar, who then confided in another friend, they decided to engage the services of the three herbalists who saw the opportunity to make easy money. The plot thickened when the herbalists accompanied the two to thebeachtoidentifythespotswhere the alleged pots of gold were buried. “They [herbalists] conducted a prayer and told us that we have a lot of good luck,” Ramothar told the Weekly. “I was told to give them R10 000, so they can go to the cemetery and conduct a certain ritual. I did not have the full amount, so I borrowed the money and paid them. “The three men, all Malawian nationals then took us into the bush near the beach in New Guelderland and pointed to a certain spot where they conducted their rituals. I was told to come back the next day [Saturday] at 6pm, so the tokoloshe could conduct more rituals,” said Ramothar. The next day they went to the beach and met the herbalists. “They conducted more rituals and one of them blew a horn from which flames came out, followed by thick white smoke. “One of them took a spade and started digging in the sand. While digging he threw the spade aside and threw himself backwards. He did that on three occasions, before shouting, ‘we got it, we got it, it is ours’.” Ramothar said the second herbalist then pulled out a blue box from under the sand. “When the box was opened, it contained R100 notes with red stains on.” When Ramothar questioned themaboutthestainsonthenotes,he was told that it was the blood of two tokoloshes who had been fighting.
Ramothar was then told that in ordertogetridofthestainshewould have to pay another R10 000. “They told us that this second R10 000 would be used to buy food for the tokoloshes so they would be calm and have the notes cleaned. “They then put the box back into the ground and covered it with a white cloth and left.” Ramothar became suspicious after the incident and contacted NForce CEO Nitesh Arjun and explained everything to him. Arjun, hisofficersandRamothar went to the beach in New Guelderland where they found the box. “When I opened it, I noticed the
stained notes. On closer inspection we discovered that they were fake. “The box also contained leaves filled right to the top, with a newspaper covering the leaves and then the fake notes, which were stained with red colouring, arranged on top of the newspaper,” said Arjun. They took the box to the KwaDukuza SAPS when they spotted the suspects’ vehicle, a green BMW, heading towards the beach. “I made a U-turn and gave chase. I forced the suspect’s vehicle off the road and arrested the three con men,” said Arjun. He said Ramothar positively

identified the suspects. “Isearchedthevehicleandfound a box containing a bag full of muthi items.” The suspects, the exhibits, the BMW, the box containing the fake notes, a pick axe and a spade were handed to the KwaDukuza SAPS. The suspects were charged with fraud, theft and possession of fake notes. Phiri, Ali and Poster appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. At the time of going to press, it was not clear whether they were released on bail or remanded in custody.

Fake CD/DVDs, businessman arrested MERVYN KRISHNA IN a fake CD and DVD bust on Friday, a KwaDukuza man was arrested at a video shop. Sachan Naidoo of Video World appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He was ordered to appear again next month. Sagren Naicker of the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft, said 1602 CDs, DVDs and a printer were seized during the raid. He said the seized items were worth in excess of R200 000. Naicker went on to say the clamp down on fake CDs, DVDs and the equipment used to produce the fake products was paying dividends. “The public should not support this illegal activi ty. The Federation will continue to conduct raids,” said Naicker.
Sad farewell to Umhlali policeman THE Umhlali SAPS say they bid a “sad farewell” to colleague, Constable Siyabonga Andrew Bukhosini (32), who committed suicide recently. A police spokesperson said the reason for his ac tions is unknown, and that he was “actually a cheer ful young man”. Bukhosini’s memorial service was held last week at the Shakaskraal Cultural Hall, and the funeral was held on Saturday at Sakhisizwe High School. Bokhosini started work at Umhlali police station in 2009 as a student constable. He had previously worked in Glendale as a reservist, having started there in 2007. He was a member of the Umhlali Task Team, and was instrumental in many critical arrests, according to the SAPS. He was also awarded the Soccer World Cup 2010 Support Medal for his role in keeping the community safe during the sports event. The spokesperson said Bukhosini was a valued colleague and had a lot of potential. “He was a real asset to the Umhlali police station and we are very sad to say goodbye to him. He will certainly be missed.”

I WOULD like to share some of the heated (as heated as text can get) Facebook conversations I sometimes find myself engaged in. These are often about apologetics, but usually turn into the ability to view ‘bad apologetics’ in action. I define bad apologetics as ‘the incorrect use of science or faith to defend atheism or theism’. Many of these conversations start with an atheist or theist making bold claims in defence of their beliefs. Ideally, I prefer to not get involved with them. Ideally. The issue arises when an apolo-

In many a debates between Christians and atheists, I find myself hopping between the two parties when I find that the side I have chosen uses bad apologetics. One Facebook encounter occurred a few hours before I started writing this column. It involved a friend who is a self-proclaimed atheist. We met during a ‘science communication’ competition in Grahamstown. This is the status he shared, updated by a friend of his: The reality is, Jesus was a mythical fig ure. Itwasthepoliticalestablishmentthat sought to [historicize] the Jesus figure for social control… thus began a long his tory of Christian bloodshed and spiritual fraud. And for the next 1600 years, the Vati can maintained a political stranglehold on all of Europe, leading to such joyous periods as the Dark Ages, along with en lightening events such as the Crusades, and the Inquisition…Christianity, along with all other theistic belief systems, is the fraud of the age. There are many flaws in this statement, but I will mention only a
few. The most obvious error is the utterance that Jesus Christ was a “mythical figure”. While I am unable to offer anything on the divinity of Christ, the issue at hand is if he existed. Secular and religious historians tell us that his existence is almost a certainty as far as the Bible’s historical integrity is concerned. The Dark Ages (formerly Middle Ages) are marked by the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 4th century and considered “dark” by historians due to the decline of historical records from the period, and not so much Christian violence, as the statement may suggest. Petrarch, an Italian scholar and historian who coined the term “dark ages” saw the post-Roman centuries as “dark” compared to the light of the Age of Classicral Antiquity. He also considered the age he lived in dark because of the “lack of cultural achievements” as compared to the previous age. Protestants of the 16th and 17th centuries considered the Middle Ages as a period of Catholic (not Christian) corruption. Like Petrarch, who did not attack Christianity per se, the protestants were seeking a restorationofbiblical Christianity. British historian, Gilbert BurOVER A

net, at the last quarter of the 17th century in one of his earliest works: The Epistle of Dedicatory to Volume I of The History of Reformation of the Church of England said, the design of the reformation [the Protestant movement] was to restore Christianity to what it was at first, and to purge it of those corruptions, with which it was overrun in the later and darker ages. The purported evidence of the violent nature of Christianity (sometimes considered a vehicle of many wars) is in many ways flawed. This is because the mentioned periods of conflict are not in fact attributed to the ideals of Christianity but are the result of some individuals in authority who saw Christianity as a means to dominate and rule the masses. My stating these facts is not to discredit atheism or support Christianity, but to try to do away with the use of unsupported assumptions. Atheists and theists alike should refrain from making arguments and stating “facts” that they have not verified. Also of great importance is the personal slander and insults thrown by either side when the “facts” run out. Defend yourbeliefbydoingalittle Googling and actually reading the bible before attacking or defending Christianity. In the words of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, “Don’t raise your voice. Improve your argument.” Let us do just that.

Living for, loving and supporting education OUR front page story this week is all about our highly successful Spelling Bee compe tition, which members of the public will be able to attend and watch in August. So effective has the event been that the Office of the Premier has partnered with us this year to take the competition from one area (Zululand – where the com petition originated) and extend it over the entire province. We are immensely proud of our Spelling Bee, which we believe has the ability and power to teach our local young people fo cus, discipline, determination and that fruit is borne from hard work. However, the event does not only bene fit pupils. It creates an opportunity for schools and teachers to pool their re sources to teach their charges with added gusto and enthusiasm. Teachers and schools are rewarded for the efforts of their spellers, as it takes many hours of tutoring to get pupils to the point of finalists. This has been clearly seen at our Zululand Spelling Bee, now in its fifth year, where teachers have put in countless hours of their own time on weekends and after hours to tutor entrants. And it always, without fail, pays off. If you are a teacher atadisadvantaged school where pupils speak English as a second language, we encourage you to en ter your top spellers into the competition. Let’s work together to build youth who are stronger, healthier and brighter than we could imagine.

HE Stanger Ministers Forum together with the churches of KwaDukuza have been part of the Global 10 Day of Prayer which commenced on Ascension Day, May 29 with nightly prayer meetings at various churches. Chairman of the Forum pastor Rajen Soobramoney described the meetings since the commencement as “awesome”. “Yes the body of Christ is unitedandmenandwomenofGodtogether with their congregation have been attending the evening prayer meetings. We have seen venues packed to capacity and all sects of the Christian faith come together,” said pastor Soobramoney.
On Saturday, the CBD experienced“God’sreleasing”whenthe congregations of all the churches marched behind the Open in Motiontrucksingingpraiseandworshipsongs.Partsofthetownwere brought to a standstill when the worshippers begin to pray. The event concluded at the AFM Church on Sunday with more than 1 000 people in attendance. Colin Bouwer was lightning fast off the blocks at the start and hardly gave his opponent, Elvis Govender time to settle down before racing to an emphatic 15-8 win. Cool Leaders turned the game on its head midway into the 2nd set taking a narrow 15-12 lead. But, too many unforced errors by Cool Leaders at the death, saw Grove End wipe away the deficit to level the scores at 25-25. Needingjust2-pointstoclinchthe second set and push the game into a third and decisive set, Cool Leaders shot themselves in the foot after failing to capitalize on some good sets at the death which resulted in their 2527 demise. In celebratingYouthMonth, Media24LocalNewsKZNwanted to make a tangible contribution to the legacy of this day.” Speaking at the first sitting of the provincialexecutive councilinPietermaritzburg last week, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said he had committed the provincial government to “moving with speed to ensure youth development programmes reach all corners of the province”. “KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council
met officially for the first time during this term of office and reflected on the progress this government is making with regard to Youth Development. “ The people of KwaZulu-Natal, especially the youth, are its greatest resource,” said Mchunu. “It is critical that the talent and potential of our youth is fully developed and harnessed, so that we can guarantee the continuous socio-economic development of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa as a whole.” Marketing manager of Media24 Local News KZN, Sharmaine Smith, said pupils have over a month to learn the words, and those who have entered the competition will then gather at events in their regions to “spell their way to success” in August. The venues, dates and times for the regional competitions will be published in July. “While we want pupils to see this event as fun, we also encourage them to study diligently for the Spelling Bee,” she said. “There are hundreds of thousands of rands in bursary, cash and book prizes up for grabs for the winning spellers, their schools and their teachers.
“Those who apply themselves will be able to make a very real difference to their education if they make it to the finals,” she said. The competition is open to grade 10 and 11 pupils (one from each grade – ie two pupils from each school) from previously disadvantaged rural schools who speak English as a second language. All entrants must be under 18. Pupils must remember that only the words printed in ‘bold’ should be learned for spelling purposes. The definitions which accompany the words are to help pupils understand the words. For the ‘Bonus Words’ section, the words and definitions must be learned. The Bonus Words are printed on the last page of the feature and are clearly marked.Pupilsarenotallowedtoenter themselves into the competition; they must be entered through their schools. All of the details for entrance to the competition are contained in the entry forms, which are printed in this week’s paper and will run for the next month.
