PROSTATE CANCER NURSE PROGRAM KICKS OFF AT ST ANDREW’S GenesisCare radiation oncology centres in Adelaide are now providing specialist nurse support for all prostate cancer patients, thanks to the recent expansion of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA) Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Program, funded by the Australian Government. This partnership with PCFA includes one specialist nurse facilitating patient clinics across four GenesisCare radiation oncology sites, providing support and education to men and their families from diagnosis through to their recovery following treatment. These clinics are held at the St Andrew’s Hospital site on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse (PCSN) running the patient clinics for the St Andrew’s site is Jasmin Mazis. Prostate cancer patients can contact Jasmin at any time from diagnosis to well into aftercare. Patients do not need a referral from a doctor to be able to link in with the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse. Jasmin has an extensive background in oncology and haematology nursing, having previously worked as a nurse educator and nurse unit manager within these fields. Jasmin also holds post graduate qualifications in Cancer Nursing and a Master’s in Public Health. Jasmin is looking forward to working alongside existing healthcare providers to contribute to the delivery of effective care for men with prostate cancer.
Jasmin is passionate about improving and delivering patient education, supportive care and health promotion. Having spent time in the NHS in London, working in patient and public engagement as a patient experience facilitator, she said, “This experience has impacted me greatly as a clinician, and I intend on continuously involving patients in what I do and how my role is delivered.” The commitment GenesisCare radiation oncology has to the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing will benefit many South Australian men, enabling them to receive muchneeded support and high-quality care from diagnosis, treatment and in aftercare.
