Australian Olympic strengths celebrated on stamps On 17 July 2012, 10 days before the London 2012 Olympic Games, Australia Post celebrated Australia’s success at past Olympics with three stamps representing the discipline of Swimming, sport of Rowing and the event of Pole Vault. The three subjects chosen are indicative of the strength of Australian athletes at past Olympic Games: historically most medals won by Australian athletes have been in Swimming, Athletics, Cycling and Rowing. Dual Olympic gold medallist Susie O’Neill was part of Australia’s successful Olympic swimming team in 1992, 1996 and 2000. “Representing Australia at the Olympics is such an honour and it’s fantastic to see Australia Post supporting our tradition of competing at the Games through this series of stamps,” said O’Neill. “Our athletes are tough competitors and these three stamps definitely represent some of our biggest triumphs. We have the potential to bring home medals in
all three of these sports and all Australians now have the opportunity to show their support for the team as we head towards London,” she said. Australia has without doubt been most successful in Swimming at the Olympic Games. Swimmers have represented Australia at every summer Olympics since 1900, bringing home 178 medals of which 58 are gold. Australia is home to the reigning men’s Pole Vault Olympic champion, Steve Hooker. Hooker won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has qualified for London 2012. We also have a strong Olympic rowing history, winning 32 medals of which 10 are gold, across men’s and women’s disciplines in a number of different boat categories. Australia has qualified 13 boats for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This stamp issue, designed by Melbournebased designer Jonathan Chong, comprises one domestic base-rate (60c) stamp (Swimming), one international postcard-rate ($1.60) stamp (Pole

The stamp illustrations have also been rendered with a watercolour effect giving them a unique appearance. The symbol of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also features on each of the stamps. The London 2012 Olympic Games stamp products include a first day cover, stamp pack, set of three maxicards, self-adhesive sheetlet of five x $1.60 stamps, self-adhesive sheetlet of five x $2.35 and a self-adhesive roll of 100 x 60c stamps. This stamp issue also includes a postal and numismatic cover featuring three $1 Aluminium Bronze coins released by The Perth Mint. The coins are legal tender and were designed by Wade Robinson. Every athlete and team that wins gold in London will have their photograph printed on stamps. The

A Closer Look at Modern Australian Stamps Three issues were released in July covering a diverse range of topics, from historical events in Australia’s history to a reflection of modern Australia.
Inland Explorers (3 July 2012)
Unusually Australia Post has chosen to commemorate the anniversaries of two significant explorations of Figure 1. Inland Explorer miniature sheet. our continent in one issue. The pair of 60c stamps while the pair of $1.20 stamps marks the 150th marks the bicentenary (in 2013) of Blaxland, Lawson anniversary of Stuart’s expedition, the first European and Wentworth’s crossing of the Blue Mountains, return north-south crossing of Australia. As with all recent horizontal pairs, the first stamp in each pair is in columns 1, 3 and 5 and the second stamp in columns 2 and 4 of the sheet of fifty. A block of four of all four values features in the miniature sheet which also shows a map of the routes of the expedition (Figure 1). The stamps themselves are designed to look like they have been engraved, even though they are not. Perhaps Australia Post might consider getting these printed by lithography and intaglio for the Impressions range?

The second Olympics issue for London 2012 features three sports Australia has had a long and successful history in: swimming, athletics and rowing. Interestingly, this Olympic issue does not specifically mention the Paralympics, or show a Paralympian, although these three sports also appear in the Paralympics. No doubt our most successful Paralympian will be featured on a stamp at the end of October, or early November. Gummed versions of the three stamps appeared in
individual sheets of fifty, with self-adhesive versions appear in a roll of 100 (60c) and booklets of five ($1.60 and $2.35). Australia Post only supplied first day covers for the three gummed stamps, and 60c selfadhesive roll stamp. First day covers showing all three self-adhesive stamps (as shown Figure 2) had to be created by collectors and sent off to the post office or Philatelic Bureau for postmarking. This second Living Australian issue celebrates how Australians live their everyday lives. The issue features typical Australian imagery - the beach, sheep, farming and the bush. I doubt many collectors were expecting another issue in this series, and I wonder if this series will continue in the future. The designs have certainly been popular with the public, and everybody seems to have their favourite. The gummed stamps were issued in horizontal se-tenant strips of five within the sheets of fifty, and Stamp News - 9
A Closer Look at Modern Australian Stamps include an illustrated gutter which is the same as the one used in 2011 (this appears to be the first time the design of an illustrated gutter has been reused). Self-adhesive versions appear in a booklet of twenty, however the arrangement of the stamps makes obtaining a set of five difficult (see Figure 3). As with last year’s issue two more prepaid postcard packs were issued (priced at $9.95 each, 35c above the cost of six postcards at $1.60 each). Both feature further photographs from the competition; and are perfect for visitors to Australia to send back home (Figure 4). As with the previous packs, Gunn and Taylor printed the postcards.
20c Pineapple Definitive Error
Back in my first column (February 2011), I wrote that many varieties could be obtained from your local post office at face value, and thanks to a regular correspondent here’s another opportunity. Noela D. alerted me to an interesting error in the bottom row of the sheet of the recent 20c definitives. As can be seen in Figure 5 the design of each stamp extends onto the adjacent stamp. This results in four stamps which are visually different to the other 46 stamps in the sheet; the error looks particularly spectacular in a block of ten. much of the limelight, Australia Post’s efforts were also mentioned around the world, with many articles reporting the joy swimmer Cate Campbell expressed at her press meeting about knowing she would be on a stamp. Each Olympian receives $20,000 from Australia Post for the rights to use their image on a stamp, and gets upgraded on the flight home. Figure 6. A Closer Look at Modern Australian Stamps Star Wars Souvenir Stamp Sheets (July 2012)
Advertised in the May-June Stamp Bulletin, these sheets started arriving in post offices in mid to late July 2012. While the stamps are no different, postal stationery collectors will find the two lenticular postage paid postcards of interest (one is shown in Figure 7). The postcards are considerably thicker due to the plastic coating on the image side, and hence difficult to scan.
Colonial Heritage: Visualising Australia Update
The intaglio version of this miniature sheet (Figure 8) arrived at the end of July. As with the Emerging Identity intaglio sheet the intaglio printing is done in the United States by BurdgeCooper New World Printing. The miniature sheet sells for $15 and raises funds towards the cost of hosting the Australia 2013 show (visit www.australia2013.com for more information).

He has two covers, one with a pair of Mythical Creatures sheets from the 3D miniature sheet, and another with one of the heat sensitive Transport stamps. Both covers were clearly Commercially used, rather than philatelic, and any collectors receiving similar items are encouraged to leave the stamps on the envelope instead of soaking them off. Whilst conducting research for this month’s column, I happened to visit eBay (U.S. site). There I noted on the day I visited 10,543 stamps under “Australian States” (which curiously includes Antarctica!), and 2,222 for “Kangaroos” (many of which were not). Informative markings” in my storage facility. The stamps utilised in the covers presented this month are generally common in themselves; of little or no commercial value. It is what their presence on cover in association with supporting factors introduces to separate them from the mundane. Serious specialists seek out unusual usages to distinguish their collection from others, and the inclusion of Postal history elements amongst one’s collection can achieve that outcome in spades. Figure 1 is a nice usage item for the specialist in KGV ½d in particular. An early (1 Jun 1915) use of a strip of four in the attractive emerald shade, Figure 5. Valuation : $150 In usage collections I’ve often commented on how I like to include the subject stamp issue employed for a specific uprate purpose. So it is with Figure 6, where 1940 A.I.F. 3d has been included in franking specifically to pay 3d registration rate. The 3d is mostly found as a solo franking on Foreign letters, and aside from this registration uprate, can occasionally be found uprating 2d letter rate covers for 3d internal airmail service surcharge. The front of cover somehow was torn, possibly during processing at P.O. for it has been repaired with stamp selvedge, endorsed “Accidently/torn (initial)”, and tied by Uralla departure office cds of 13 Sep 1940. A nice little element of added interest. Valuation : $50 I can see that “pestilence-ridden” comment above coming back to bite me in respect of Figure 7. Only a Postal history buff could love it. The severe staining has occurred after the stamp was affixed, so a misadventure has taken place once the cover was placed in letter receiver. I suspect this item could have an interesting story to tell; there is a pin impact point at upper left, suggesting an attachment explaining the trauma may have originally been affixed. We’ll probably never know (unless a sleuth checks internet for possible reporting of a suitable incident in Sydney newspapers on or about 4 Oct 1932). We do, however, have a rare informative label apologizing to recipient for damage in the post. Great P.H. item or dramatic inclusion in a KGV usage study. Valuation : $200 The Zoological series which commenced in 1937 is rightly a popular usage study amongst specialists. There are many unusual usages to be found by the diligent, and I’ve seen some very interesting collections presently under construction. Figure 8 would find a place in any collection of 22 - Stamp News
this subject. A registered cover from Ipswich sent on 18 Jun 1940 to Brisbane, the staff at G.P.O. apparently didn’t like the state of the envelope when received, and went to the trouble of affixing the gummed sealing label inscribed “THIS ARTICLE WAS/NOT PACKED/SECURELY . . .”, tied by signature. This is a rare P.O. label, enhancing greatly the impact this item has in an exhibit. Valuation : $75 A thoroughly detailed P.O. handstamp such as that shown in Figure 9 is both unusual and rare. Posted at Adelaide 24 Jul 1992, to a G.P.O. box, the cover is stained and has received P.O. repair to trauma suffered lower left. The handstamp “THIS ARTICLE WAS DAMAGED/BY LIQUID WHICH ESCAPED/FROM ANOTHER ARTICLE.” leaves me with little to add. Great P.H. or dramatic usage item for the Threatened Species series, and excellent example of why removing stamps from covers can be an opportunity lost. Valuation : $75 Not often I’m involved in living Postal history, so Figure 10 has a special place in my P.O. “misadventures” exhibit. The full package, it came with an “ambulance” cover, explanatory letter, the whole contained in a plastic cover, given the fragmentary nature of the contents. Someone had apparently set fire to a street posting box in Ballarat on or about 28 March 1995, a timeframe for which I have an alibi placing me elsewhere. Valuation : “Priceless” Rod Perry has been a philatelic trader since 1962 and a Stamp News advertiser since the 1960s . He founded Rodney A Perry Auction Galleries (now Millennium Philatelic Auctions) in 1971. As a collector he has exhibited nationally and internationally. Ireland: the Definitive Issues. Part 9. They’re here! Watch out! It’s the scary Irish birds! No, they’re not some giant man eating birds of prey, just the next Irish definitive series. ‘Scary’ was how I referred to this issue at the close of last month’s article, and I must admit to a bit of trepidation as I start this article. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, this overall series is one of the most complex and confusing modern stamp issues that you’ll encounter. They appeared over seven years between 1997 and 2004 in three distinct issues, Irish currency, dual currency (Irish and Euros), and finally, Euros. In the early issues there were numerous variations and combinations to be found, particularly in the self-adhesive roll issues. I suspect that most of my apprehension comes from these late 1990’s pre Euro issues, when I can clearly remember trying to work out just what exactly had been issued from the new versions arriving as part of my mint AnPost standing order, then trying to match them up with the used issues I was getting in kiloware etc, along with information from fellow Ireland collectors, some of whom I must admit were far more diligent in their investigations than I, coming up with versions of some of the stamps that I’d never seen or heard of! To add to this confusion, a new edition of the Stanley Gibbons Ireland catalogue was published, from memory, fairly late in this period, which had no listings for some variations that we’d discovered at least twelve months earlier. In fact, we’d looked forward to this catalogue, hoping it would clear up some of the uncertainty surrounding some of the bird stamps, but alas, it was not to be! Around this time I mentally threw my hands up in despair, and tended to relegate the birds to the ‘too hard’ basket. Hence, my apprehension! Secondly, I’ve struggled to try to find a good level at which to ‘pitch’ this article. I could try to investigate every nook and cranny of the issue, which would give me a great opportunity to try to put right the aforementioned throwing up of hands, but would probably take several months, numerous articles, and most likely result in many of you good readers slipping into a philatelic stupor after the second or third paragraph. As this is pretty much the opposite of my desired outcome for readers of my articles, I’ll do my best to avoid it. Rather, my plan is to try to move quickly through the general run of 28 - Stamp News
the mill issues, while highlighting the areas that may be of more interest. Well that’s the plan… so please bear with me. As with any complex philatelic issue, I imagine the Irish birds will evoke either terror or fascination in the heart of collectors, or possibly a mixture of both! Despite my concerns, I have to say that I think that this is one of the most interesting of any modern definitive issues. While I’m sure many of you may be thinking ‘really? what about the Machin heads from England? Or the numerous issues from the USA over the last 30 or so years? Or even our own recent Aussie definitves?’ Not to mention many other countries’ issues that you may be thinking of. And you’re quite correct, there are many other fascinating and complex issues out there to be collected. I feel the difference with the Irish birds is that there is potentially quite a lot of information still to be discovered, researched and studied. Hopefully, reading this article will motivate you to do just that. Now, on to the stamps!
1997-99 Irish currency issue
These attractive stamps were all designed by Killian Mullarney, We’ll start off looking at the sheet stamps which were issued in three groups, with eighteen denominations ranging from 1p to £5, printed in multicolour on mostly plain backgrounds Fig 1. The stamps of this initial issue were printed in lithography by Irish Security Stamp Printing Ltd, without phosphor tagging. The latter two groups mentioned above consist of two sets of six stamps

Mike Lee of similar designs but with phosphor frames. One word of warning, up front, about perforations. With the sheet stamps, all of the major catalogues tend to vary a little from one to the other in their perf gauge listings, as do the few on line listings that I’ve found. This can be quite confusing if you are using more than one reference to sort your collection. My advice is to stick to the one you find the easiest or most comprehensive, or generally best suits your collecting needs. In order to help you sort the ‘originals’ from the later phosphor issues, I’m going to jump forward in time a little here and deal with this and the two phosphor sheet issues first. In November 1998 the 30p Blackbird, 32p Robin, 35p Stonechat, 40p Ringed Plover, 45p Song Thrush, and 50p Sparrow Hawk were printed by Walsall Security Printing Ltd in the UK, with an approximately 2mm phosphor frame around the outside of the stamp. These stamps were perforated 14 x 14½ or 14½ x 14. Almost concurrently with the Walsall stamps, ISSP produced the same six denominations with phosphor frames (in fact two values actually predate the Walsall printings). The ISSP stamps were perforated 15 x 14½ or 14½ x 15.So, how to sort these from the original non phosphor issue, and then one another? I think the easiest way is to check for phosphor frames first, and then check the perfs of the phosphor

issues to sort the Walsall issues from the ISSP. The phosphor is quite easy to detect, just hold the stamp at a flat angle to the light and the frame will show up as a dull, flat, brownish frame around the outside of the stamps. Remember, you only have to check the six denominations detailed above, they’re the only ones that have phosphor frames. Now you just have to sort the Walsall from the ISSP phosphors by checking the perfs. If you’re still in any doubt, the Walsall stamps have a flatter ‘Fada’ or accent over the E of Eire. Before we go on to the self-adhesive and booklet issues in all of their variety, we’ll skip back and deal with a couple of the other earlier bird items. In May 1997, the £2 Pintail design was issued in miniature sheet format to commemorate the Pacific 97 International Stamp Exhibition held in San Francisco Fig 2. Despite the fact that this miniature sheet was not placed on general sale in Ireland (from memory is was available at the exhibition and by mail order from AnPost), it is still listed in all of the major catalogues. Single stamps from the sheet are easy to tell from the regular issue as the head of the duck is in reddish brown, while the head in the regular issue is grey. Secondly, we have the February 1999 sheetlet of fifteen different 30p bird stamps, most of which feature designs already issued in the original set (actually, the Wren and Pied Fig 3: The sheetlet of 15 30p birds Stamp News - 29
Ireland: the Definitive Issues. Part 9. Wagtail designs are unique to this sheetlet) Fig 3 . This sheetlet was printed by ISSP, and all of the stamps have the 2mm phosphor frames. This is a lovely sheetlet, but the stamps that it contains can cause a bit of confusion if you are trying to sort out used singles without illustrations. The Hibernian catalogue lists and illustrates them separately, but the SG catalogue doesn’t, and just to make it all a bit trickier, SG incorporates the listings for the stamps from the sheetlet into the main listings with the other regular sheet stamps. Just to make life a bit easier if you’re using the SG catalogue, the SG numbers for the stamps from the sheetlet are 1038ap, 1039p and 1040/52. The sheetlet number is SG 1038aq. The good news is that the stamps from the sheetlet are extremely hard to find used, so you probably won’t have to worry about it! I recall at the time that the sheetlet was issued, that AnPost explained that it was
issuing it so that thematic collectors could have all of the bird designs without having to buy all of the individual stamps! I also recall chuckling. Hmm… What else can you do?!?
Varieties
Not too many varieties have been recorded to date on the birds issues, in fact there are just three. The original (non-phosphor) 30p Blackbird is known with the vertical perforations misplaced resulting in ‘eire’ being at the bottom of the stamp. This variety is known both mint and used, and is worth a pretty penny, cataloguing at €1500 for MUH and €400 for used. The ISSP phosphor border printing has two varieties, again the 30p Blackbird, but this time with the yellow missing, resulting in the leaves being a greyish-blue. It is only known used, and the Hibernian prices it at €1500. Finally the 35p Stonechat is known with a horizontal misperf, resulting in the ‘35’ being at the right of the stamp. This variety is only know mint, and catalogues at a more modest €400. I suspect there are many, many of these otherwise common stamps out there that have never had much attention paid to them, and there’s a reasonable chance that somewhere amongst them are more of these varieties just waiting to be discovered!. If you have some it may be worth your while having a quick look – you never know, you might just be lucky! And there we’ll leave the birds for this month. We’ll start off next time with the self-adhesive roll or coil issues which is where we find much of the complexity of the Irish currency bird issues – and you probably thought the sheet issues were confusing enough! Thanks to Norm Hart for the information on these items that I wrote up in the July column. Seems I misread the underprint on the Registry stamp and got the wrong state for the TB control Centre. I have also had some information from a couple of other readers who wish to remain anonymous and my thanks to them for their input.

The Warren County TB control center is NOT in Ohio, it is in New Jersey, it is actually written on the stamp but when I did a web search for the stamp I did not include the state with the search and thus came up with the wrong state.
Registry Seal
The item you call a registration label is in fact a Registry Seal used as a label to seal letters opened in the Dead Letter Office, their Scott catalogue Number is OXF 1 issued in 1872. It is what the Americans call a Back of the Book item so you won’t find it

National Botanic Garden Of Wales
Alex McKnight provided me with more information about the National Botanic Garden of Wales item in the July column. This comes from a “Window” booklet issued by the UK GPO on April 4 2000. These booklets were printed in gravure by Walsall Security Printers and contained a pane of 4 x 1st class Millennium Machin stamps and the label was attached to the right of the pane. A number of similar booklets were issued from 1994 onwards and the labels marked such things as the 300th Anniversary of the Bank of England (1994), RJ Mitchell, the designer of the Spitfire (1995), The Queen’s 70th Birthday, (1996), the hand-over of Hong Kong to China (1997), and the Berlin Airlift (1999). The labels are all very attractive, some being printed in lithography and some in gravure.

Tiki Green Stamps
In the June column I wrote a note about these stamps suggesting that they might of New Zealand origin. An Adelaide collector has lent me a Tiki Green Stamp Saver Book that is half full (16 pages) of the stamps and inside the cover is a lot of information about the Company. A price in decimal currency was quoted in the book so that dates it to at least 1966. The Tiki Green Stamp Company operated in New South Wales and stamps were given free to those who made purchases from participating businesses. Each page held 40 stamps, so it took a lot of purchases and stamps to fill a book which when redeemed at the Tiki Green Stamp Company entitled the collector to select an gift appropriate to the number of stamps in the book.
Who Pinched The Horse And Van From Who?
The four Private Parcel Carrier stamps illustrated
all show marked similarities to each other, so in the words of the title, Who Pinched the Horse and Van from Who? The McCulloch stamp, (fig. 1), is one of four ‘denominations’ Registered A, B, C or D produced for the Victorian operations of the company and the stamps may have been produced as early as the mid 1860s. The Victorian McCulloch company went out of business in 1886, but the name was bought and continued to trade as the McCulloch Carrying Company The John Woods & Company stamp, (fig. 2), was produced for a Sydney company about which little is known, but probably contemporary with McCullochs. While McCullochs describe their service as Parcels Express, Woods advertise theirs as Parcel Delivery, but the same horse and van is used on the stamps and the quality of the printing suggests that Woods copied McCulloch. Bill Hornadge wrote about the company and the stamp in Cinderella Corner in 1981, 1985 and 1986,

but no one has provided any information about the stamp beyond what Bill originally wrote. Bradley & Company was an Adelaide Company and the stamp, (fig. 3), appears to have been produced in around 1882. The Company was bought out by the J.R. Cocking empire in about 1886 and any stamps in stock were acquired by Cockings. J.R. Cocking appeared first as a company in Adelaide in around 1882, and after acquiring the Bradley & Co business in about 1886, used that company’s stamp with a hand applied overprint. Cockings issued stamps, (fig. 4), in their own name from about from about 1888. The Bradley and Cockings stamps both have the same frame around the horse and van vignette, and both horses are trotting, but the canopy on the Cockings van has been modified with a shorter awning over the driver and the denomination is expressed as sixpence on the Cocking stamp and six pence on the Bradley stamp. A vehicle of that type is described in the South Australian Horse Drawn Vehicle Collection as a Hawker’s Van, but given the various uses to which they were put, I expect a better description would be a General Purpose Van
Southern Cross Windmills And Elder Smith & Co
At the South Australia Study Group meeting on 24 July we had a showing of South Australian Advertising covers and among them I spotted this little gem, (fig. 5), that I had not seen before. Elder Smith & Co., the agents for the windmills was initially formed in 1840 by Alexander Elder as A.L. Elder, an import agency. With the discovery of Copper at Kapunda and later Burra and later again at Wallaroo and Moonta, the Elder fortune was established. The company went into pastoral pursuits and in 1863 the Elder Smith Company was founded by the son of Alexander, Thomas Elder, and Robert Barr Smith, his brother in law. I won’t continue the story further suffice to say that the name still exists in one form or another to this day.

STAMP BEAUTIES During a visit to the south of France in December last year, I tried to find something interesting on TV. Soon I landed on a channel which broadcast the selection of Miss France 2011. Basically every French dĂŠpartement had chosen its beauty queen to represent its part of the country. I never found out who won as the contest seemed to be endless. Beauty queen pageants are organized in many parts of the world and I guess it is the dream of many young ladies to be elected Miss Australia or something rather similar. It is the opportunity to be in the limelight of attention for at least several days or perhaps as much as a year. Today very much has to do with physical beauty. The Western world is replete with beauty salons, nail therapists and the like. Gyms offer to transform their customers into very attractive men and women. Numerous women pay for extremely expensive

breast enlargements and other similar aesthetic operations. As can be seen there is no end to all these attempts to improve your looks. Elegant clothes also play a certain role in this connection. Shown nearby is a French stamp honouring that nation’s glove industry. Australians were invited to vote for Miss Australia from 1954 until 2000. This seems mainly to have been a kind of charity do. The first Australian Miss World was a young lady called Penelope Plummer. She obtained the coveted title in 1968. 1972 was a great year for Australian beauty queens. Miss Belinda Green became Miss World and Miss Kerry Anne Wells was elected Miss Universe. In 2004, Jennifer Hawkins became Miss Universe. Both Kerry Anne and Jennifer then went on to successful careers in television. Today the perfect woman is supposed to be tall,
Christer BrunstrĂśm rather slim and sporting a nice sun tan. With the exception of the sun tan this seems to correspond to the ideal of feminine beauty in ancient Egypt and Greece. Beauty was seen in a very different way in the 17th century when Rubens painted his rather fat and flabby women. These somewhat unpleasant adjectives can be used to describe many men and women today as there are frequent reports about increasing obesity in the Western world. The cause is stated to be the diet of hamburgers, French fries and Coca Cola which tends to be the favourite meal for many people. Many also spend numerous hours each day in front of a computer or a TV set. All in all this seems to be an efficient formula for obesity. Feminine beauty has always played a major part in designing our postage stamps. It all started way back in 1840 with the famous penny black. It
shows the portrait of a very young Queen Victoria. During the remainder of the 19th century, symbolic portraits of women became very common as stamp designs. During the first part of the 20th century, many colonial administrations released stamps depicting scantily clad “native� women. Someone has suggested that the purpose was to lure young men from Europe to move to the colonies. France and Portugal are two colonial powers that frequently released this kind of stamps. One of my sideline collections is devoted to beauty queens on stamps. It is kept in a small stockbook which has been sitting very quietly on a shelf for a great many years. I was reminded of its existence when I recently came upon a 2009 souvenir sheet printed in gold and honouring Miss Kainane Aldorino. She was first elected Miss Gibraltar and then went on to become Miss World.

STAMP BEAUTIES One can imagine that competition must have been very stiff. The sheet made me seek out my beauty queen collection and it provided the inspiration for this article. One of the very first countries to depict a beauty queen on its stamps was Colombia. Luz Marina Zuluaga became Miss Universe in 1959 and the victory was celebrated by a very proud nation by issuing a set of three stamps. The set created a lot of attention at the time and sales were brisk. The 5-peso value is the key to the set which currently retails for some $50 which is a low price to pay for this perfect beauty. Claudinette Fouchard was not only elected Miss Haiti in 1960 but she was also that year’s Sugar Queen. Miss Fouchard is depicted on a set of six stamps with either a tropical beach or a sugar plantation in the background. She has of course been equipped with suitable royal regalia. In 1963, the people of Jamaica rejoiced at the successes of Miss Carole Joan Crawford. She was first elected Miss Jamaica and then went on to become Miss World. The Jamaican Post Office celebrated her with three stamps and a souvenir

sheet. The 1970 version of Miss World came from the Caribbean island of Grenada. Once again stamps were issued in honour of yet another beauty queen. The women of the West Indies are apparently very beautiful. In 1977, Miss Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad & Tobago became Miss Universe and the Post Office issued three stamps featuring the young lady in classic poses. Did you know that there is also a World Tourist Queen? Miss María Elena Sol from El Salvador obtained this prestigious title in 1970. The El Salvador Post Office marked this important event by issuing a set of four stamps. It might seem strange that Central America and the Caribbean are home to so many beauty queens (if we are to believe my admittedly very limited collection). However, there are Miss Worlds and Miss Universes from all parts of the world but I suppose not all postal administrations feel that they deserve commemorative postage stamps. It’s really a pity as beauty queens make excellent and very attractive stamp designs. The selection of beauty queens in this article
was limited to the ones found in my very small collection. For those who would like to specialize in this topic there are undoubtedly many other similar stamp issues from all over the world.

Hawkes Bay Centennial 1958 Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island was one of Captain Cook’s landing places in 1769. He named it for Admiral Edward Hawke who had defeated the French at the battle of Quiberon Bay off the coast of France in 1759. The area had been settled by Maoris of the Above: Figure 1 Below: Figure 2 NgÄ ti Kahungunu tribe from the 13th century but in the 1820s tribes from further northwest invaded, armed with weapons obtained from Europeans who had no idea of the devastating consequences of their trading on the tribes to the south. The area had a smaller Maori population by the time Europeans began settling there in the 1850s, mostly to establish sheep grazing, following earlier activity by whalers, traders and missionaries. The principal cities are Napier and Hastings, only 18 kilometres apart, both named for British leaders in India. Between 1853 and 1876 New Zealand had a number of Provincial Governments because overland communications from the capital Wellington were handicapped by the rugged terrain and armed conflict with Maori tribes in the central North Island. Hawkes Bay became a separate Province with its own government in November 1858. In November 1957, the Napier City Council asked that commemorative stamps be issued 40 - Stamp News

Because of the short time available, three stamp designers were approached to prepare stamps based on subjects that had been agreed to previously (Fig. 1). M R Smith had previously submitted a design for a Health stamp featuring the statue of Pania at Napier and he was asked to adapt his design for the commemorative issue (Figs. 2 & 3). In the Maori legend, Pania was a sea maiden who swam ashore at sunset and returned to the sea before dawn. She married a chief, Karitoki, but continued to return to the sea every morning. Eventually she was turned into a rock and forms a reef off Napier beach. The statue was presented to the city in 1954 by a community group, the Thirty Thousand Club. The model for Pania’s face was local school girl May Robin. The bronze statue was cast at Carrera in Italy. James Berry had previously submitted a drawing of the Australasian Gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers (Figs. 4 & 5) and he was asked to design the 3d stamp on this subject. Cape Kidnappers was named by Captain Cook after some Maoris who had been trading with the ship attempted to seize a Tahitian boy who had been travelling with the expedition. They took him in their canoes but the boy jumped overboard and returned to the Endeavour. In Maori tradition the Cape is likened to a Tuatara lizard, with its tail sloping down into the sea. The Australasian Gannets nest in large colonies on off-shore island around Australia and New Zealand. The Cape, where they have been nesting since the 1870s, is their only mainland site. L C Mitchell was asked to design the 8d stamp featuring a shearer, based on photographs taken at a demonstration of shearing during the Queen Mother’s visit in February 1958. Stamp News - 41

The stamps were printed by photogravure by Harrison and Sons who also provided a souvenir folder of the stamps (Fig. 6). The 2d and 8d stamps were in sheets of 120 (8 rows of 15). The cylinder number 8 appeared in the top left margin of the 2d stamps and number 9 in the top right margin of the 8d. The 3d cylinder had two groups of 120 impressions (20 rows of 6) and these were numbered 7 (without full stop) for one group and 7. (with full stop) for the other. The cylinder number was at the bottom of the left margin. The sheet values were in the top right corners of the sheets; there were broken bars in the bottom margin of the 3d sheets and in the left-hand margin of the 2d and 8d. The paper was watermarked ‘NZ & star’ (sideways on the 3d). The comb perforations gauged 13 ½ x 14 ½ for the 2d and 8d and 14 ½ x 14 for the 3d. There was difficulty aligning the comb during perforating and the problem was so bad on some sheets of the 2d that they had to be supplied with several vertical rows of stamps removed from the right side of the sheets. Some minor flaws on the photogravure plates, which would have resulted in small white spots appearing on the stamps, were touched up by hand engraving. The stamps were issued on 3rd November 1958 and withdrawn on
28th February 1959. A pictorial first day canceller was used at Napier (Fig. 7). It showed a tri-pot used by whalers to render down blubber and the name ‘Ahuriri’, the original Maori name of the area and the name of the first post office before the city of Napier was established. A distinctive date stamp was also used at the post office at the Centennial Industries Exhibition held during this period. Last month I looked at possible sources for obtaining more information regarding either stamp collecting in general or your particular collecting interest. With access to the Internet, you have the whole world of philately available to you. I spend a considerable amount of time on the internet, researching my collection and in preparation for many of my articles. It is amazing what you can find when you have an inquisitive mind and some time to spare. I recently found an impressive site which is expanding its range of collector-friendly information services. This site will be described in detail next month. Two particular sites which can be quite rewarding, both for beginners and experienced collectors, are •• The American Philatelic Society www.stamps. org/Home, and •• Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_ collecting, and its associated site wikiHow www.wikihow.com/Collect-Stamps.
The American Philatelic Society
On accessing the site beginners should click on Stamp Collecting as a start, and begin working down the drop-down menu. Some of the topics are clearly related to the American scene, but much of the information is universal in nature. A Hobby for Everyone describes in summary what stamp collecting is all about, why you should be a collector, and who are already collectors. Starting a Collection can be quite rewarding, in question and answer format under six sections •• •• •• •• •• ••
What to collect; Where to get stamps; Identify stamps; What tools; Stamp tips; and Glossary of terms.
The information shown is easy to read and understand and includes pop-up definitions where 44 - Stamp News
appropriate. The Glossary of terms only includes common words relating to stamp collecting, but should be sufficient for beginners. Tips and Links provides simple explanations for Soaking Self-Adhesives, Auctions, Preservation and Care and some useful links, with drill-down capability. There are tips on buying and selling at auctions. The links are ideal for collectors of United States material. A very comprehensive list of Frequently Asked Questions under seven categories is included. Simply select the topic you want, click on the question and the answer will appear. A real plus on this site is the Stamp YouTube Videos, and many hours can be spent looking through these. At the time of writing 38 such videos were available in 6 categories. Under the Services drop-down menu are a number of topics to assist, such as tips on buying and selling, both on-line and by mail, learning opportunities, stamp identification, and many more. The Learning Opportunities (Education) section is well worth a look. For the experienced collector there is also plenty of material to occupy any number of hours. Once you start surfing this site you soon become drawn in to the depth of information that it contains. An expanding range of on-line exhibits are available to view – shown under the categories of Air Mail, Foreign, Topical/Thematic and United States. Perhaps not everything in this website is appropriate to Australian circumstances, but it can certainly be an excellent starting point to find out more about stamp collecting.
Wikipedia (the on-line encyclopedia)
This website is probably one of the last ones that you would expect to include much useful information for the budding stamp collector. On access you immediately have a List of Contents, many of which are self-explanatory, and all should be viewed. The Collecting Specialties section is well worth looking at, as this gives information about the many ways in which stamps, etc, can be collected, and is a lead in to the exhibition classes. This is an area

Clicking on the word philately just under the Table of Contents opens up further treasure chest of information, mainly relating to the various types of collecting. The ability to drill down and down assists greatly in the overall understanding of any topic. For example, when I was writing my article on the Aerophilately Exhibition Class, I drilled down to the page headed Philately, then
consider, including a video. The data on this site has been prepared by volunteer authors and the information therein is capable of being edited, corrected or expanded. There is a list of new articles which could be added by knowledgeable authors. Also included is a listing of Related wikiHow pages. Once again, these websites are slanted to the American scene, but still provide very useful reading.

There is obviously some duplication between the above sites, but duplication quite often reinforces the message. These sites are well worth more than a casual visit. A few hours occupied in this fashion could be very rewarding. If you cannot find anything new, at least you will be able to advise other collectors of a possible source of useful information, and isn’t useful information most important to our ability to expand both the knowledge and appreciation of our collections? Stamps in the News - Globally! Gold, gold, gold…and a stamp
Reported in www.reuters.com When Australia’s glory girls won Olympic gold in the pool yesterday, their first thoughts were not medals or podiums, but stamps. Gold medals can sometimes be a path to fame and fortune but for Australian swimmer Cate Campbell, the most exciting thing about becoming an Olympic champion is that she will now appear on a postage stamp. The Malawi-born Queenslander won gold as part of the 4x100 meters freestyle relay team, swimming the second leg in a shock victory over defending champions the Netherlands in Olympic record time. Each Australian gold medallist at the London Games gets to be on an Australia Post stamp and receives A$20,000 (US$20,900) for their image rights. They also get an upgrade when the team flies home. “I think this was the thing I was most excited about it,” the 20-year-old Campbell told a news
conference after the race. “It was the first thing that went through my head when we touched the wall, I’m going to be on a stamp and I get to fly back business class. While all the Australian swimmers who swam in the relay heats get a medal, only the four who competed in the final have the honour of appearing on the stamp. Melanie Schlanger, a heat swimmer for Australia’s champion 4x200 team at the last Olympics, was delighted to make the step up into stamp class after swimming the last leg in Saturday’s triumph. “I was a member of the 4x200 in Beijing and I was in the heat team so I remember getting the medal and seeing the stamps and obviously the four finalist girls were on that and I remember feeling proud and sort of jealous at the same time,” she said. “I’d totally forgotten but ... I’m really rapt, I can’t wait to see them and I hope I get a copy.”
Suffering for your stamps
Reported in www.thenation.com Johnny Tremont’s trip to solitary confinement in a New York prison started with having too many postage stamps. In prison for a 15 year sentence, Tremont sometimes relieved the monotony of prison life by betting on sports with other inmates, using the common prison currency of postage stamps. “I was on my way to pay the guy who won a pool between a few friends,” he recalls, when he was caught with 200 stamps, well over the allowable number. This earned him a month of round-the-clock confinement to his own cell : twenty-three hours a day in an area the size of the average suburban bathroom. Reported in www.eveningnews24.co.uk A Church treasurer, who used his position of trust to steal nearly £70,000 from two north Norfolk churches to fund his addiction to stamp collecting, has lived up to the promise he made to the judge to repay the money. The prosecution had wanted to arrange a bulk sale of the stamps which would have raised an estimated £25,000 but Klein who, the court heard, was one of the country’s top stamp dealers had said that he could make four times that amount if he broke up the collection and sold it off on eBay. That was four years ago and yesterday he appeared at another court hearing where it was revealed that he had now managed to repay more than £59,000 of the money back. Judge Jacobs said that the unusual move he had taken had meant that the losers got most of their money back rather than if the valuable stamp collection had been sold off in bulk at a knock-down price. Klein told the judge that he had tried to always get the very best price for the stamps he had sold and added: “I think I have done my penance.”

This new release also marks the first time since 1989 that France and the U.S. have jointly produced postage. Both the Edith Piaf and Miles Davis QR code stamps have the barcode printed on their reverse. When smartphones are used to scan the quick response codes, they are redirected to a landing page, which provides the option to listen to Davis’s music, while viewing images and information on both musicians. The two musicians were chosen because of their popularity in both nations. For example, though Edith Piaf is a Parisian singer, she is became a household name in the U.S. Equally, Miles Davis, the American jazz trumpeter, is much loved among the French, having been named a Legion of Honour Chevalier.

Revenue stamps, marked ‘’stamp duty’’ are seen attached to old legal documents, notably title deeds. They record various denominations of stamp duty and unused or specimen examples from the second half of the 19th century are now attracting serious money. ‘’It’s the only way for many collectors to get their hands on a stamp that is generally unused,’’ Prestige Stamp News - 47
Stamps in the News - Globally! Revenues in the making ?
Philately’s Gary Watson, says. The latest batch of revenues was part of the sale of the Les Molnar collection of Victorian stamps. The period of postal history after the Victorian gold rush is popular around the world and revenue stamps proved to be the most successful section of the sale. All stamps sold, most above estimate, and some two or three times above. While a £100 duty stamp sold for $1200, a £6 sold for $3200 and a £8 version sold for $3600 as there are only two known in the world. A 3d mauve example sold for $3800; its catalogue estimate was $1500. The auction cleared 88 per cent by volume, achieving total sales of $486,500, a great result for Les Molnar, a Canadian resident of St Catherines. There have always been collectors of revenue stamps but these record prices are a recent phenomenon. Not quite in the same league, other types of revenue stamps also have their followers. Beer duty stamps were produced in Victoria late in the 19th century, fixed to either bottles or labels. Molnar also included a small selection of these in his sale and one of the largest examples sold for $500. 48 - Stamp News
Reported in www.ft.com The UK Government is considering introducing duty tax stamps for beer, as the country’s National Audit Office urges the government to do more to tackle duty fraud. It is estimated that duty may be unpaid on up to 14% of beer sold in the UK. Duty stamps are already applied to spirits and wines in the UK with two different versions. One is a freestanding stamp, which is similar to a conventional tax stamp, containing tamper evident cuts, a permanent adhesive, a unique number, guilloche background, UV ink and chemical tags. The other is an electronic version for incorporation within existing bottle labels. The security is provided by the application process for supplying the artwork and the print specification itself, which requires the use of special UV inks.
From papal altar boy to Vatican stamp collector
Reported in www.catholic-sf.org Agostino Crotti was one of a select few altar boys at the Vatican when he started in 1963. In 1969 he served his last Mass for Pope Paul VI and, at 18, immigrated to San Francisco with his family. The legacy of his experience with the Pope is the 36 volumes of Vatican stamps he has collected over the last 49 years, possibly the most complete collection of Vatican stamps in the US. It begins with the first issue at the founding, in 1929, when Mussolini agreed to the Lateran Treaty creating Vatican City, and it continues through this year. Crotti began collecting stamps in 1963, when he began serving Mass for Pope Paul VI. “As a 12-year-old kid, I noticed there were long lines of people at two post offices, one inside the Vatican and one at St. Peter’s Square. I told people about these stamps and they started sending me money to buy them, with a little gratuity for my

services, and with that money I was able to buy my stamps and it didn’t cost me anything.” The most valuable stamps in the collection date to 1934, when the Vatican reissued the 1929 “Conciliation” issue with a miniscule run of 18,000. A group of six of these stamps is valued at $6,000 today. Pope John Paul II, a stamp collector himself, knew the laws of economics particularly well and he is credited with reducing the printing run of Vatican stamps from millions to around 300,000, said Crotti, keeping the price high. Crotti did not pursue the priesthood and today runs Tommaso’s, a successful Italian restaurant . After a gruelling day in a stressful business, Crotti often takes comfort in his stamp collection. “This is a serious collection, and I am very proud to say that.”
Better late than never
Reported in www.thisislocallondon.co.uk Imagine Lesley Myring’s surprise when she was forced to pay £1.50 to collect a letter which had been in postal limbo for 12 years. The letter dated May 24, 2000, was sent to her by her employer to confirm that she had been booked on a first aid course. The London Road resident said: “I don’t even remember if I went on that course it was that long ago. “It was only when I got home that I opened the letter and noticed the date. Who knows where it has been all this time.” She added: “I was shocked and have found it all very amusing but I would like the Royal Mail to reimburse me for the postage charge– I wouldn’t call it very good customer service.” A Royal Mail spokesman apologised to Mrs
Myring and said the firm would be liaising with her to sort out the 12-year mix up. She added: “The most likely explanation is that this item was put back into our system recently.” The Royal Mail has since sent a letter of apology and six first-class stamps to Mrs Myring.
Second class delivery for Lancashire County Council
Reported in www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk Lancashire County Council has joined a number of local authorities in banning staff using first class post because second delivery is as quick. Their move emerged as Manchester City Council announced it would save £200,000 a year by stopping using first class post because tests showed second class was as fast. East Lancashire’s councils have scaled back their use of first class post since the price rises on April 30 increased the cost of second class stamp from 36p to 50p and first class from 46p to 60p. Lancashire decided to use only second class to save cash and now only assistant chief executive can authorise first class for a specific service. clear distinction between first class and second class mail and this is reflected in how we process and deliver mail across the UK.”
Ozzie stamps set to fly
Reported in www.afr.com Melbourne businessman Hugh Morgan’s stamp collection has won approval to be sold overseas and will be auctioned in London on November 13 and 14. The sale of his collection is believed to have been delayed in part because the Protection of Moveable Cultural Heritage Act might have prevented items from going overseas; two rare lots were in contention. Mr Morgan is expected to raise more than $4.5 million from the sale. His father William began the collection in the early 1960s and it is rich in early 20th-century specimens.

Mr Morgan and his father ran Western Mining Corporation. The stamps will be auctioned at Spink & Son in London on November 13 and 14. The sale will cash in on an expected accelerated interest in Australian stamps ahead of the centenary of Commonwealth postage in 2013. Mr Morgan has been negotiating to sell his collection for several years and was advised to act before the death of Adelaide chemist Stuart Hardie, who owned another collection. Mr Hardie died last year and his stamps will be sold on May 13, 2013 by Phoenix Auctions in Melbourne. Mr Morgan considered local auctioneers but is believed to have been seduced by the idea of a London sale. Early Federation stamps, and those issued by the states before it, have a big following overseas, thanks to the unusual marsupials depicted on them.

Reported in www.ameinfo.com Emirates Post has issued special stamps on the Liwa Date Festival, the annual event that is held in Abu Dhabi to raise awareness about the cultural, historical and nutritional importance of dates. “The date is a classic symbol of Arabian heritage and it is important to highlight its role and benefits to the modern generation,” said the Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates Post. The main idea behind the festival is to encourage planting of palm trees and to further consolidate the role traditionally played by dates in the life of UAE people.
Famous propaganda stamps at auction Postiljonen´s autumn auction will be held in Malmö 28-29 September. Classic Sweden, a fantastic section of Iceland and rare stamps from World War II are some of the highlights. The auction starts with “The Saga Sale” of Iceland which is a unique section of unusual, rare and high quality Icelandic items. The base for this sale originates from two enthusiastic collectors and their respective areas. One collection is highly specialised in Icelandic ship mail, foreign cancellations on stamps primarily originating from ship letters, numeral and crown cancellations on and off covers. The other collection focuses on unusual and particularly beautiful items, single stamps and covers from all fields of Icelandic philately. It has been collected over decades with an extraordinary sense for beauty and scarcity. Besides this a never before seen section of early Icelandic booklets is worth mentioning. The auction contains a number of very interesting items from World War II, for example the famous American antiNazi propaganda forgery of the German Hitler Birthday minisheet. The sheet was produced in Rome in 1944 by OSS, the American Office of Strategic Services and was included in a mission called “Operation Cornflakes”. This mission involved dropping bags of fake mail into bombed German mail trains. The propaganda letters with the altered stamps would then hopefully mix with the genuine letters and be delivered by the German Post. The minisheet for sale was produced in very small numbers and in the green colour they are extremely rare. Only a few are known to exist. The four rouletted stamps are perfect and the starting price will be 15,000 Euro. From World War II is also the extremely rare 10 lire Airmail stamp overprinted “Deutsche Besetzung Zara”. The overprint was made in 1943 when Mussolini hade been overthrown and Germany occupied Italy and the city of Zara. Only 50 copies were produced and this is a
OSS propaganda forgery of the Hitler birthday minisheet € 15,000 margin copy and the only one with the variety; short first “a” in “Zara”. It also has partial off set of the overprint on the back. This is a truly unique item with starting price of 25,000 Euro and the catalogue price as much as 120,000 Euro. The classic part of the Swedish section is a fantastic display of beauty and rarity. A very large number of single stamps in superb and excellent quality will be offered along with interesting and rare covers. A very beautiful cover front to Germany with 3 Sk. Bco and a pair of 6 Sk. Bco will be for sale. The only earlier documentation of this cover was from an auction sale in 1922, since then it has been missing and believed to be destroyed. Starting price of this rediscovery is 4000 Euro. The real highlight though is a fantastic cover with 4 copies of 3 Sk. Bco used very late together with one 5 öre Coat of Arms, which well paid for the double rate in 1862. The sender has probably figured the 3 Sk. Bco stamps as 5 öre. The last known sale price is from 1976 and it was at the time the highest price ever paid for a Swedish cover. Starting price will be 100 000 Euro.

Australia only had 2 Gold Medals to that point, and MUCH was made of being behind even New Zealand at that point! What a tragedy that was. Thankfully for local collectors, buying a set of the ozzie sheets will cost a LOT less! Australia pioneered the “instant” stamps for Gold Medals in 2000, and continued with it in 2012 (one shown nearby) – with sadly far less than the 16 Golds won in 2000.

Market Matters In Britain, Royal Mail also painted selected cast iron red streetside mail-boxes in Gold paint, to celebrate each new Gold medal. Sadly the one painted to honour poster girl Jessica Ennis’s win, in home city of Sheffield was vandalised with graffiti, and Royal Mail needed to paint it gold again the next day. Postmarks that puzzle!
We have all seen stamps I am sure, that have postmarks that add an amusing dimension to their underlying stamps. They have a design element in a place, where the artist never anticipated one etc! The old 1 Peso, green and black Chile stamp shown nearby depicts the subject with a lovely pair of devil or Viking horns for instance. Britain goes for GOLD! We see eyeglasses, beards, moustaches and odd postmark wording, given the subject design etc. I am sure we have all seen them, and have a chuckle when we do see them, but as they are of little monetary value, are generally not retained. Having said that, knowing collectors and dealers, some reader is bound to have Hagner sheets full of them as a sideline collection.

The 1953 4d Canada shown nearby has a rather neatly placed Goatee beard, on Her Majesty The Queen. Seems to be a cancel referring to Red Cross and the ‘O’ has made a lovely goatee as you can see.
Male or female?
If you place a piece of paper over the forehead and under the neck it could well be the image of a man – try it and see. This an exceedingly common stamp used of course – value a few cents a bundle of 100 from packet-makers. However this one is fun, and I am sure would sell for a few dollars to someone, somewhere, as a curio. Royalty collectors would I am sure also pay a few dollars for the striking machine cancel shown nearby, of Prince Charles wearing glasses– from a “POSTCODE IT” roller cancel.

I always smile when I see that silly stamp – as most realise, Prince Charles and Diana were exactly the same height - 5’10” in the old measure. varieties - and these often bring big dollars. Transient flews such as ink blobs can also be striking, but are usually “one offs”. The mint New Zealand 1882 3d Yellow Queen Victoria nearby, I added to stock recently at $A60, as it has a large “shotgun hole in head” ink blob variety. However as it is NOT a constant plate flaw, these things seldom sell for more than the cost of a normal example of the same stamp, as in this case. Exceptions exist of course – the ink blob “CNE” on 1d Red KGVs, and “Missing Fraction” 2½d Kangaroos etc get huge prices for some strange reason. Usually a plate flaw needs to have been constant to get listed in major catalogues. It really helps their popularity if a short catchy name can be given. “Broken Leg Kangaroo” is a good example. The name is short, and the flaw is mentally very easily visualised. On the 6d Brown it is not uncommon at all, but gets 3 figure type prices, mint or used. On the 6d Blue it is rare. An equally populous constant plate flaw might well get only 20% of this price, as the name is not nearly as short or catchy. Something like “small breaks in shading lines between Tasmania and Victoria” is nowhere near as catchy a name – however may well be numerically scarcer! Printing techniques, especially on stamps before World War 1 were often far less rigorous than those of today. The “workhorse” stamp issues of most countries were printed in vast numbers in that era.

The very ordinary looking ½d green Kangaroo shown nearby was invoiced for $A56,250 at the Gray sale in 2007. This 1913 stamp has a SIDEWAYS watermark, and only a few are recorded thus. SO far! Ordinarily centred, it has a Toorak Victoria cds, of November 11, 1913 date, and has terrible “fluffy” perfs.. There are both versions of this invert known crown pointing left, and crown pointing right. So it clear at least 2 sheets were sold. Many more may be out there – being such a cheap stamp normally, most folks have simply never bothered searching. Retail is only $1 or so, and even INVERTED watermark is pretty common, so few have ever looked at the watermark. I have NO doubt whatever more copies of this error will surface after this publicity. Let me know if you find one!
Heligoland here I come!
I typed this column on the island of Heligoland, in the North Sea. Been lucky enough to have travelled to about 130 different countries, so finding somewhere ‘new’ to visit is not easy – and this fitted the bill! A fascinating island to visit, via detours in Malta, Switzerland, Italy and Thailand on the way over. There are no cars on Heligoland (which is only 1.2km x .5km in size!) and the Post Office van is an all-electric vehicle, that picked up the postcards I mailed. For the info of Heligoland collectors, the boat across has a special ‘Sea-Post’ cancel for stamped mail lodged in the box on board, and a few of those also went to clients who had asked me for them. All the boats across were cancelled the day I had scheduled, as they discovered large unexploded WW2 bombs, and banned all shipping. A shame as we had another day in boring old Cuxhaven. The Allies bombed the living daylights out of Heligoland in WW2 - 969 allied bombers in one huge Squadron - 617 Lancasters, 332 Halifaxes and 20 Mosquitos - on April 18, 1945. There are large bomb craters all over it, to this day. The Brits used it for bombing practice into the 1950s. For anyone travelling to Germany, DO add it to your itinerary. Hardly a word of English spoken on the island, or boats across or in any signage anywhere, and TV 100% in German, but that aside, a great little vacation destination.

GB Rowing Win Celebrated With Next Day Stamp To celebrate Team GB’s first gold medal moment at London 2012, Royal Mail produced a stamp in 24 hours to honour Helen Glover and Heather Stanning’s gold medal triumph in the Women’s Pairs Rowing. The gold medal win makes Helen and Heather the first members of Team GB to appear on Royal Mail’s Gold Medal stamps and the first all-women sports team ever to appear on a Royal Mail stamp. They are also the first ever British gold medallists in women’s Olympic rowing. Moya Greene, Royal Mail Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to be issuing these very special Gold Medal stamps to recognise our Olympic champion UK athletes. “This is a first for Royal Mail and we are proud to play our part in celebrating the many victories this summer. “We will be printing millions of stamps to enable customers to celebrate these sporting successes and I’m sure they will be treasured as unique souvenirs of Team GB’s victories for years to come.” Royal Mail also painted one of its much-loved red post boxes gold in the pair’s hometowns of Lossiemouth and Penzance to celebrate their gold medal win. The stamps were onsale by lunchtime the next day in over 500 Post Offices across the UK. Many of these branches were open on Sundays for the first time during the Games, so fans could celebrate Team GB’s achievements and start a unique and special London 2012 souvenir collection. As soon as Helen and Heather won their gold medal, Getty Images, the official Photo Agency of the IOC, submitted a selection of the best images from that moment to the eight-strong Royal Mail design team. The Royal Mail design team had just one hour to review all the images sent, locate the most fitting and atmospheric image, crop and refine the photo, add Helen and Heather’s name, then position within the templated design of the sixstamp miniature sheet. On stand-by, poised to collect the completed sheets once printed, were a fleet of 90 Royal Mail
vehicles ready to deliver them to over 500 Post Offices. An additional 4,700 post offices received the Gold Medal stamps within a week.
