A sea of orange crush overtook the province of Alberta on Tuesday night and the Edmonton and St. Albert region was no exception. The result was surprising for many, mostly due to the overwhelming majority gained by Rachel Notley’s NDP. Marie Renaud captured over 53% of the St. Albert vote, beating PC incumbent Stephen Khan with 12,219 votes to his 6,343. The riding of Spruce Grove St. Albert was decisive as Trevor Horne of the NDP won the riding with 11,527 votes. The 24 year old MacEwan University student took over 46% of the vote compared to Rus Matichuk of the PC’s who was the next closest with 25.69%. Throughout the province, the story was the same as the NDP orange dominated on all fronts to provide for one of the biggest surprises in Alberta’s political history taking 54 seats of the 87 to form the majority government of Alberta.

Awkward conversations: When teens binge drink

` In part two of a ďŹ vepart series about awkward conversations we need to have with St. Albert youth, the Leader talks to teens about binge drinking. MARCIE GRAY St. Albert Leader

Get ready for a party. It’s grad season in St. Albert, and for many students that means caps and gowns, dinner and dancing, and then getting drunk at the after-grad party. But talk to teens and you’ll hear that binge drinking — defined by Alberta Health Services as five or more drinks in a 24-hour period — is not a grad phenomenon. In an informal survey of 31 students, where teens between the ages of 16 and 18 representing all of St. Albert’s high schools shared their experiences, a majority admitted to binge drinking. Twenty-three students said they had four to five drinks in one sitting during the last month. Of those students, 19 binge drank on at least two separate occasions during the

last month. Those can be hard numbers to hear for a parent, especially if they’re unaware of their child’s drinking habits. Most parents are, according to the group of 31 students. They estimate that 60 per cent of parents don’t know how much or how often their kids drink. It’s a secret kids want to keep. For this article, teens wanted only their first names published. One teen, worried about her mother’s reaction, asked to use a pseudonym. Everyone in the informal survey reported that they have no problem getting liquor. Older siblings or friends are ready to bootleg. So are some parents, and that’s a good thing, say several of the teens, because parents can have some control over what and how much their kids drink. Giving kids alcohol is a no-go for addictions counsellor Wendy GruhlkeSmar. She works for Alberta Health Services in St. Albert and says parents need to set firm rules against drinking. “It can be like poison. It’s a mind-altering substance and should be taken seriously and locked up with any other substance that can be harmful, and even fatal in some cases. You should lock it up the same way you would prescription drugs. With research indicating that brains are

still developing well into adulthood, she says giving minors even a little to drink can be dangerous. Gruhlke-Smar recommends parents start talking about the consequences of drinking long before their children might feel uncomfortable broaching the subject. From the police’s point of view, binge drinking isn’t a problem in St. Albert. Constable Yelena Avoine, a school resource officer with the local RCMP detachment, goes on bike patrol when the weather warms up. She says she rarely encounters young people drinking, never mind being drunk. But that’s on bike paths and in parks. Constable Avoine acknowledges she can’t see what’s going on behind closed doors at house parties. She advises parents to tell their kids that drinking underage simply isn’t appropriate. How realistic is it to expect teens to listen? “Some will and some won’t. That’s why it’s good for parents to talk to their kids, even to share stories of when they themselves were teenagers and what they’ve been through. It’s really powerful to share those things. If you need help, Avoine says don’t hesitate to go to schools and the police officers working in them. Gruhlke-Smar at Alberta Health Services says she’s always ready to answer your questions, or you can call the 24-hour addiction helpline at 1-866-332-2322.

` TEENS PRESPECTIVE

“If you’re at a party with a bunch of random people, it’s really hard to open up and mingle between friend groups. Alcohol just makes it easier. Kids aren’t sitting around with each other to have a couple beers and talk; everyone just wants to get really drunk and meet people. Plus, if you do something stupid, you can just blame it on the alcohol.â€? – Jane, 16 “When I was ďŹ rst going to drinking parties, my parents would give me three beers to take. This prevented me from asking older people to boot for me, and when people get booted for, they frequently get too much alcohol, like a 26 (ounce bottle of liquor), and since they don’t know how to drink or what their limit is, they drink until they’re sick.â€? – Landon, 19 “When junior high or early grade 10 students get involved, (most of them) see drinking as a way to become popular, so once they get invited to a party, they take it too far, and get dangerously black-out drunk. Mainly it happens for attention and to become the ‘story of the party.’ It’s becoming more and more common, and it’s honestly quite scary.â€? – Rhiannon, 17

OPINION

WHO IS THIS?

Conflict all around

Here’s a photo of a well known local St. Albert citizen. Can you figure out who it is?

C

onfllict of interest — or perceived conflict of interest — is a funny thing. It is being brought up in many scenarios as of late. Before elections, during elections and even after. We are hearing many voice their displeasure over the resignation of councillor Gilles Prefontaine so that he could accept the position of chief community development officer here in St. Albert. During the entire recruitment process, no one knew of his application except for him and the city manager. Council did not know, and the mayor did not know. We’re not suggesting that Mr. Prefontaine is not a capable individual. He has many great qualities that will lend themselves to this position and benefit our community, which he is indeed very passionate about. Just last week, on the provincial scene, there was much hubbub about some businessmen taking the floor to voice their concerns about the NDP in the provincial election. An action that absolutely added to the NDP landslide on Tuesday night. Doug Goss was one of those individuals and was taken to task by the Association of Academic Staff University of Alberta. They issued a statement on May 4th saying that, regardless of his motivation, Goss’s actions were in direct conflict with his role as chair of the Board of Governors at the university. He was there to state his personal opinion, but it was perceived as conflicting with his role at the university. As of press time, Tash Taylor, current executive director of the St. Albert Housing Society, who was just hired in February this year, confirmed she’ll be making an announcement on Thursday, May 7th that she’ll be running for the vacant council position. Her comments brought quick questions on social media about whether or not she’d take a leave of absence from her position to run and eventually resign if she was successful. She confirmed to the Leader that she has no plans to do either. We believe these are moments that could have used, and still can use, a few more moments of reflection to avoid conflicts of interest, real and perceived, that may arise now or in the future.

Last week, Prefontaine resigned as councillor so that he could accept the position of chief community development officer. In accordance with the Municipal Government Act, the by-election must be held within 90 days of the resignation, which in this case means before July 27th. With concerns about the summer holidays, council made the decision to approve The official date for the by-election is Wednesday, June 24th, 2015. Council also approved up to $120,000 for administration to spend on costs associated with executing the by-election.Â

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – A St. Albert couple missing since the Nepal earthquake have been confirmed dead. “It is with our deepest regret and sorrow that we now advise you that our sister Kathy Macmillan (Smith), and our brother Bruce Macmillan have both perished in the Nepalese earthquake,” family announced on a Facebook page dedicated to finding the couple. The Macmillans, of St. Albert, were marking their 35th anniversary with a trip to Nepal, an area they visited shortly after they were married, according to the post. Bruce, 62, and Kathy, 57, had been travelling through Asia for about six

months and had made plans for their two sons -- Fraser Macmillan, 30, and Jay Macmillan, 28 -- to join them in Nepalese capital of Kathmandu on April 27. The couple was last heard from on April 20, when they alerted family they’d made a last-minute decision to trek through Langtang National Park before they were to meet their sons. “Bruce and Kathy were seen to be hiking in the area that was totally buried in the avalanche at the village of Chyamki,” the Facebook post said. “Kathy and Bruce passed away while travelling the world, their passion from the moment they were married.”

BUSINESS

Self-help junkie BRITTANY KUSTRA Special to the Leader

It’s time to come clean: I’m a recovering self-help junkie. From time management apps to spiritual guidebooks, I spent many hours working to improve myself within something I call “the cult of positivity.” The gist of this movement is to embrace positivity in all circumstances. As long as you keep up your level of enthusiasm, believe in passion and stay positive, you can achieve anything! I attended a great conference last week and came home with a ton of great ideas about how to build entrepreneurship within a community incubator. However, I found one keynote speaker to be lacking. His 45 minute speech repeated many of the positivity club mantras. Be enthusiastic, no matter what, and you, too, can be a successful entrepreneur in spite of great odds. Now, don’t get me wrong: I don’t think you can be a successful entrepreneur without enthusiasm and passion for your business. But that makes up about 10 per cent of the recipe for success. In order to achieve success as a business owner, you’ll also need: • A solid business plan • A competitive advantage • An understanding of your market and competitors • A marketing and sales strategy • Lots of hard work • Just a bit of luck There is one aspect of the self-help industry that I still subscribe to, though: goal setting. It’s something I practice both personally and professionally, and we recommend it to every entrepreneur that comes through NABI. Goals help you find a target to focus on. When you’re still in the office on a long weekend, dreaming of a regular 9-5, they will help you remember why you started in the first place. They will give you a reason to keep chasing that sale, and they will remind you to keep balancing your budget. Our advice in a nutshell: shoot for the moon, but if you miss, make sure you have a solid business plan to land on in the stars. Brittany Kustra is the communications and marketing coordinator for NABI. Are you ready to set your personal and professional goals? Visit www.nabi.ca to make an appointment today.

Volunteer Citizens of the Year LEADER STAFF St. Albert Leader

This year two individuals were recently honoured with the Roy Financial Volunteer Citizen Award. VICTOR FERNANDEZ was recognized for his efforts to acquire firefighting gear disused due to replacement to other countries in need, such as Chile and the Phillipines. This gear – while outmoded by new safety standards here at home – could be useful in countries where volunteer fighters might report to a fire in nothing but a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, using hoses and buckets. It is impossible to estimate

how many firefighters become safer because of the equipment Victor helped them acquire. JEAN LEEBODY was recognized for her dedication to arts & heritage, both at home, and further afield. From 1985 to 1993 she served with the St. Albert Irish Society. From 1993 to 1997 she lobbied successfully to have Grosse Isle on the St. Lawrence River preserved as an Irish Memorial National Historic Site. Lately, Jean’s ‘retirement’ project has been as the volunteer Exhibition Coordinator for Project Heroes, ensuring that dramatic oil paintings of young fallen soldiers from the Afghanistan conflict could be shared with all Canadians in a travelling exhibit.

Grilled Flank Steak on a Ciabatta Bun INGREDIENTS So what do we need?

Don’t be afraid to substitute your own twists cooking is truly all about trial and error!

A couple Flank steaks Olive Oil Red wine vinegar Soy sauce Paprika Red onion Fresh herbs - cooking with fresh herbs makes all the difference in the world, but you probably already know this - Cilantro, flat leaf Parsley, Thyme and Rosemary Garlic Butter Red wine (mostly for the cook but some for the sous chef...) Arugula Kosher salt Fresh ground black pepper

HOW TO What are the directions?

19

Kent Clark St. Albert Real Estate Agent

What makes this a dish you like to make? It’s a BBQ meal that requires little prep and is easy to do outside on a beautiful day on the patio while entertaining. Also the flank steak is a cheaper cut of meat that can be turned into a “WOW” meal for you and your guests. Who is your favourite Chef and why? I would have to say Gordon Ramsay... I realize that because of his popularity lately, as he is on every cooking show going, he is a pretty common answer, but he really is a culinary genius (as well as a complete spazz that makes for great TV... lol). If you get a chance, you can learn a lot from his show Ultimate Culinary Cookery on the Food network. He offers the smallest, most subtle tips while cooking that you will find yourself using on even the simplest of meals (and he doesn’t scream at anyone because it’s only him).

What country would you like to visit for their cuisine? I would love to travel through Europe and do some cooking classes in different counties and be exposed to the some of the local fare that we don’t normally see. Not to mention that I would love to do wine pairings with the food as well. A great meal you’ve had in St. Albert the last couple months? That’s a tough question, because there are a lot of great places in St. Albert and we are constantly trying to support local business, but we have a group of close friends that do a version of the IRON CHEF where we get together once a month during the winter and each take turns battling it out cooking live meals. It gets everyone out of their comfort zone and exposes them to new flavors and different cultures.

What is on your food bucket list? There is little I am not willing to try to eat, so have sampled many unique dishes. I do want to try to make my own dim sum one day though – a cooking bucket list more than eating I guess.

Score the flank steaks across the grain of the meat (this will allow the seasoning and flavor of the marinade to soak in). Rub the steaks with olive oil and put them into a ziploc with a splash of red wine vinegar and soy sauce, finely chopped red onion and garlic, a dash of paprika, and finely chopped thyme, rosemary and some cilantro. Let it marinade for at least an hour or two, but preferably over night. Take them out of the marinade when ready to grill and give them a generous dose of Kosher salt and pepper. This will create a nice crust on the BBQ. **This step doesn’t NEED to be done but if you like fresh roasted garlic, give it a shot...Cut the end off of a whole head of garlic and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper in a tin foil pouch and wrap it up tightly and throw it on the grill for 20-30 mins (until soft and browning when you look in). This will be used as a spread for your Ciabatta later. Now throw the flanks on for 4-6 mins on either side (turning so you create the grill marks). You will have to use your judgment here depending on the thickness of the meat and the temp of your BBQ, but remember, this is not a very fatty cut of meat so it is best served as medium rare (there will be some of the edges that will get cooked a bit more for those guests that would prefer it a bit more done). Take the meat off the grill and “tent it” with tin foil for about 10 mins (remember, it will continue to cook the foil so account for that when you take it off the grill, but it is always important to rest the meat so it retains all of the juices). While the meat is resting, take the roasted garlic and some soften butter to make a spread and put it on the Ciabatta bread. Then lay them on the BBQ to give them the desired grill marks. Slice the steaks as thin as you can at a slight angle but mostly against the grain and put them on platter ready to make the sandwich. Feel free to sprinkle with chopped cilantro or parsley and even a small squeeze of lime for some ‘zing’. Feel free to eat it open-faced or as a sandwich, but try adding some spicy aioli or a Dijon horseradish and/or some aged cheddar cheese for a kick. As well, a couple pieces of Arugula to add pepperiness. Absolutely not complete without a cold beer in a frosty mug or nice glass of a light red wine like a Pinot or something without a heavy, tannin taste that takes away from all of those flavors in your dish.
