BLOAT MOTHER of All EMERGENCIES

astric dilation and volvulus, commonly known as bloat, is one of the most serious and preventable emergencies seen by veterinarians. It occurs when the stomach becomes distended with gas and rotates to the point that gas can no longer escape the stomach. Pressure from the large stomach decreases blood flow to vital organs and the heart. This results in shock. Even with appropriate treatment, mortality rates as high as 33% have been reported. While the exact cause of bloat is unknown, there are a variety of risk factors that can help to identify patients that are likely to develop bloat. The most common identifiable factors are size, breed, temperament, and eating habits. Large and giant breeds are the most likely to be affected. Dogs weighing 100 lbs or more have a 20% chance of developing bloat in their lifetime. Giant breeds such as Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and German Shepherds are also at high risk. Dogs with nervous or anxious personalities are also more likely to be affected. In fact, the most common time to see bloat is in a dog being boarded. This is thought to be associated with the stress of boarding. Other risk factors include large meals, rapid eating, eating from an elevated bowl, and a familial history of the disease. Identifying dogs affected by bloat is generally very easy. They have significant abdominal distention, usually more significant than if they were pregnant. There is typically some degree of vomiting or regurgitation, and they

range from mildly to profoundly lethargic. X-Rays of the abdomen will easily identify a bloated and rotated/torsed stomach. Once identified, treatment must be initiated immediately and usually includes IV fluids, surgery, and supportive care. Even with aggressive treatment, 10% will die in surgery, 18-20% the week after surgery, and 70% will survive to live a normal life. What can be done to prevent this life threatening disease? This is really a situation where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The single most important preventative step is stomach tacking, also known as prophylactic gastropexy. This is a procedure where the stomach is tacked to the abdominal wall to prevent it from rotating and twisting on itself. Performed appropriately, it is virtually 100% effective in preventing gastric torsion. The best time to have this procedure performed is at the time of spay or neuter. The procedure doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really add to the recovery from a traditional spay, and may prevent a potentially fatal disease. If your pet has already been spayed, and surgery is not an option, preventative steps may include feeding multiple smaller meals, adding canned food to the diet, socialization, and feeding from a bowl on the floor. Remember, if your dog is lethargic, and suddenly looks pregnant, do not stop, do not pass go, go directly to your vet!

Rayne of Team SOUTHERN CHARM

There is nothing more fun than watching a dog playing. Rayne, of Team Southern Charm, can be seen having a blast at a recent dock diving event, held at Stone Mountain, Georgia, in June of 2013. Rayne is a Lab and Malinois mix, who was adopted after an accidental breeding with a police dog in Alabama. She was born in July of 2012, and is often called “Super Puppy” by her owner. Rayne loves to compete in dock diving and disc dog competitions and is learning new sports and tricks every day. In only her first year competing, Rayne was invited to the DockDogs World Championships that were held in Iowa this past November. She competed in the Senior Big Air Division. Rayne is a part of Team Southern Charm, based out of Jefferson, Georgia. Team Southern Charm is comprised of four dogs: Willow, Jax, Rayne and Meeka, with handlers, Steve Mize and Christie Mills. Steve loves competing with his dogs. “Their energy and love of playing never ceases to amaze me”, he says. “They continue to get better and better at every event. We love going to events and having a blast. The people and other dogs are such a great community to be around.” Rayne is such a joy with whom to work. She loves to run, jump, and chase anything you can throw. This 18 month old mixed breed dog has such great potential. Rayne continues to amaze her handlers in everything she does and will most likely do it with that great smile on her face.

For many pet parents, losing a pet is like losing a best friend, a family member, and a trusted companion all at once. When that loss occurs, many are left with grief and other emotions that can be overwhelming, not knowing what to do or say to move forward, or even what to say to others in a similar predicament. Deceased Pet Care in Atlanta, offers a free monthly Pet Loss Support Group to help those through these emotions and the grieving process. Those of us who love our pets realize our pet is not “just a dog” or “just a cat”, but a beloved member of the family. When they come to the end of life, you feel a significant, even traumatic loss. The level of grief depends on factors such as your age and personality, the age of your pet, and the circumstances of their death. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief you’ll feel. If, for example, you lived alone and the pet was your only companion, coming to terms with his loss can be even harder. Or, if you were unable to afford veterinary treatment to prolong the life of your pet, you may even feel a profound sense of guilt. One aspect that can make grieving for the loss of a pet so difficult is that pet loss is not appreciated by everyone. Friends and family may ask “What’s the big deal? It’s just a pet!” Some people assume that pet loss shouldn’t hurt as much as human loss, or that it is somehow inappropriate to grieve for a pet. They may not understand because they don’t have a pet of their own, or

because they are unable to appreciate the companionship and love that a pet can provide. Pet Loss Support Groups decrease that sense of isolation and aloneness in addition to providing validation and support for one’s feelings. Seeking out others who have lost pets and can appreciate the magnitude of your loss, as well as learning ways of getting through the grieving process can help greatly.

Deceased Pet Care’s Pet Loss Support Group is held on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 pm — 8:30 pm at its Chamblee Funeral Home located at 4991 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia, 30341. Come and share your story, or just listen and receive support from others who understand what it means to lose a pet. We will explore the grief process and learn ways to let go and move forward in a meaningful way that pays tribute to your beloved pet. Rabbits Are for Life Not Just for Easter When spring approaches, we think of flowers blooming, warm sunny days, a favorite season for all - unless you’re a rabbit. At this time of year people are drawn into impulse purchases of darling baby bunnies. Unfortunately, baby rabbits are purchased by people with no preparations made for their long term well being. Since rabbits have a 10-12 year life expectancy, this should be a long term commitment. Many of them end up sad and lonely, in tiny cages with little or no attention, the wrong food, no toys or exercise, and living outside. Some die from lack of proper care, many are surrendered to county shelters within a few months, and many are abandoned outside because people no longer want them when the novelty has worn off, and think they are setting the rabbit “free”. A domestic rabbit has little or no chance of surviving on their own outside. They lack the survival instincts of a wild rabbit. They suffer from starvation,

dehydration, parasite wounds and infection, and many are killed by cars, dogs, hawks, and wild predators. Even those fortunate enough to be caught can be so injured and sick that they don’t survive. If you have an interest in adopting a rabbit as a family pet, or if you already have a rabbit and want to learn more about house rabbits as pets, please come visit the GA HRS Rabbit Center and sign up for one of our Bunny 101 classes. Saving Toto Throughout The Wizard of Oz, we are reminded of Dorothy’s bond to Toto and her refusal to leave him behind. The Wizard of Oz recently celebrated its 75 th Anniversary and it’s no wonder why this movie continues to connect with people. The story is full of so many memorable lines and iconic images, and, of course, an unforgettable dog named Toto. Toto was played by “Terry,” a Cairn Terrier. Terry’s life began a long way from the Yellow Brick Road. Her original owners abandoned her, but in a twist of fate, she was left at a kennel owned by a professional dog trainer. Before long, Terry was working in film, starring with Shirley Temple in a movie called “Bright Eyes” before landing the role in The Wizard of Oz. The movie’s theme, “There’s No Place Like Home” has resonated with

generations of viewers, and for Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue (CPCRN), it’s the heart of their mission. As the largest national organization currently rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Cairn Terriers and Cairn Terrier mixes, saving dogs like Toto is a big job. With close to 800 members all over the US and Canada, the Col. Potter team always works hard to make it happen. Since its inception in 2001, CPCRN has rescued 3,674 dogs in need. e love our pets and want the best for them. As essential oils can help us humans, we find they are becoming popular in the pet community. Just like humans, animals become ill and suffer from numerous physical ailments. Some of these are genetic, but others are simply the result of day-to-day living and can be improved through diet and other natural solutions. One such solution is the use of essential oils. Humans have used essential oils throughout history for various health applications. However, with the advent of modern medicine, essential oils fell out of favor. Recently, the use of oils for improving our health and wellness has exploded, with our pet also enjoying this resurgence. Animals often eat plants because they feel the instinct to do so. Fundraising for Georgia Law Enforcement and First Responder K9s Our non-profit’s quest is to raise $25,000 to provide vital protective equipment to Georgia K9 Units. Most first responder K9 Units (police, sheriff, fire, and rescue) do not have the funds to purchase protective K9 equipment. Due to budget cuts and other economic issues 92% of all K9 units are run solely on donations. In almost all cases, the handlers must personally pay for their K9 partner’s needs which include medical, food, grooming, training, certifications, and safety equipment such as K9 bullet & stab-protective vests, K9 First Aid kits, K9 cooling vests, K9 heat alarms, etc. Most people assume that because the K9 is an officer of the agency then the K9 must therefore get all the equipment it needs to be protected and that the agency pays for all its expenses. This assumption is entirely false. These highly trained K9s dutifully protect and serve us every day and we believe they should be protected in return. Our purpose is to raise funds to provide the equipment they need. Because these items are highly specialized, and state-of-the-art professional equipment, these items are quite costly. Many of them are “Military Grade” to ensure the best possible quality and are proven to last for years. All K9 equipment provided by Project Paws Alive is professionally made by licensed companies that meet all

state and federal regulations. Project Paws Alive only donates professional grade equipment certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the National Institute for Public Safety (NIPS). Each protective bullet & stab-proof vest costs on average $1400 depending on the size of the K9 and any required agency equipment requirements, K9 field trauma kits are $350, K9 cooling vests are $200, and K9 vehicle heat alarms with full options and the “No K9 Left Behind” technology costs between $2,000- $2,500 depending on the make and model of the vehicle. These costs are not achievable by the limited budgets of many agencies or those run on donations. This is why we need YOUR support to help provide this vital equipment. What is Heartworm disease?

eartworm is a disease that can affect H dogs, cats and even humans. It is caused when an infected mosquito bites the pet and injects larvae into the body. The larvae grow inside the body, traveling into the heart, liver, lungs and blood vessels. They eventually develop into adults and the females produce babies, called microfilariae. Both the adults and babies can be detected on blood tests.

If your pet becomes infected with heartworms, it can have symptoms such as coughing, lethargy and exercise intolerance. More serious symptoms include breathing difficulties, an enlarged liver, fainting and sudden death. There is treatment available for your pet. It involves a series of injections and is a very serious (and usually costly) treatment. Your family veterinarian can explain the protocol and its possible side effects if this should happen.

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable. There are a variety of oral and topical preventatives available through your family veterinarian. These medications are all researched and proven effective in the prevention of heartworms. It's best to talk with your veterinarian about which is best for you and your pet. A yearly blood test is generally required to fill this prescription medication. However, if given properly, it’s highly unlikely that your pet will develop heartworms. Heartworm carrying mosquitoes are found in most states, but are very prevalent here in the south. That is why it is so important for your pet to be on prevention all year round.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.   When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.   There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.   There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.   All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,  just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing.  They each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.   They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.  His bright eyes are intent his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,  you cling together in joyous reunion,  never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face,  your hands again caress the beloved head,  and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.  Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Sometimes these unexpected costs can come about when our pets are trying to protect us or protect “their turf.” Dog bites are typically covered by most insurance policies, but the insurance industry as a whole has become more sensitive to certain breeds and their supposed likelihood of attack. Many prominent insurance companies in our area have in fact banned certain breeds from being covered and some are even refusing coverage to homeowners with these certain breeds. The impact of this to the average homeowner is that you need to be fully aware of your insurance company’s stance on dogs and the particular breeds that may not be covered should there be an instance of a dog bite. Your homeowner’s insurance

is designed to protect you from liability arising from your animal causing bodily injury or harm to another person, on your own property or otherwise. I have personally seen where a small dog bite can bring a personal injury suit exceeding $250,000. A visit to a dog park has the risk of provoking serious aggression if the chemistry just isn't right between strange dogs and owners with vastly different personalities and temperaments. A popular alternative is to arrange a play date at a facility known as doggy daycare. Ask your neighbors and other dog owners who they might have used. Proof of up-to-date vaccinations are required, and follow your heart and nose to find one that meets your expectations. They will separate pets into compatible groups if needed, all in a large, fun-filled but safe fenced-in environment. Providing an action-filled day playing, running and interacting positively with other dogs and their minders can help calm an otherwise anxious or stressed dog. Even just hanging out on a couch together watching the rain come down outside, in the company of like-minded canines, can have a positive long term effect on any dog, preferably after chasing a tennis ball or Frisbee for hours!
