Animal Control vs. Humane Society ounty Animal Shelters (Animal Control) are County owned and tax payer supported. They must take in all stray animals and owner surrendered animals. Animal Control often euthanizes animals due to space limitations. Some county shelters may contract shelter operations to non-profit organizations. As they strive to be a “no-kill” shelter, they must reduce the number of animals they house through euthanasia.

What you choose to feed your pet is the single most important health decision you can make for him. So why not feed him what he would naturally choose for himself if he could? As humans, it’s important that we eat fresh, raw foods like vegetables and fruits. It’s just as important for our dogs and cats, but as carnivores, their raw food should be raw meat. Raw foods are alive and packed with enzymes, nutrients, and antioxidants; their nutrients are more easily absorbed and digested; and they’re high in moisture so your pet is properly hydrated.

Raw feeding doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Adding some raw into your pet’s existing diet will boost their health naturally. Come talk with us at Fido’s Market. We understand that every dog is different and we have options for every situation and every budget. We specialize in raw feeding, have the largest selection of raw foods in the area, and would be happy to help you find something that will bring added health benefits to your pet and works with your lifestyle. Michelle Leiby Owner, Fido’s Market

Here are some of the benefits you’ll be able to see from a raw diet, but there are so many more that you can’t see. • Shiny, soft coat • Less “allergic reactions” (itchy skin, ear infections, paw chewing) • Less digestive issues • Reduces gas • Fresh breath, clean teeth, less doggy odor • No more picky-eater syndrome

• Arthritic symptoms are reduced • Better ability to manage weight • More energy • Less poop, firmer stools • Fewer insects and parasites

any of us probably remember the numerous trips to the pediatrician to receive our childhood immunizations. Today’s children can look forward to vaccinations against 16 different CDC recommended preventable diseases. Depending on the schedule, that could be between 30 and 60 different injections by the time a child reaches 18 years of age. In recent years, there has been significant pushback against over vaccination. Research studies falsely linking vaccination with autism have further increased anxiety associated with vaccinations. This anxiety seems to translate more and more into canine and feline vaccinations. Helping Feral Cats through

U

nlike stray cats which are tame, feral cats are wild from having no contact with humans. Because they’re afraid of people, trapping is usually the only way to catch them. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the process of trapping cats with humane cages, spaying/neutering, vaccinating, and releasing them back into their neighborhood. TNR benefits the cats and the community by eliminating nuisance behaviors such as fighting, howling, spray-marking, and disease. Common myths about feral cats:

Myth: They deplete the bird population. According to The World Watch Institute, habitat loss, pollution, pesticides, drought, window collisions, cell phone towers and cars are the main factors affecting bird populations. Cats do not even make the list! Myth: Removing the cats will solve the problem. If the cats are removed, new cats move in and quickly breed up to capacity.

abandonment--a criminal act. Why not send feral cats to a shelter for adoption? They are almost impossible to tame, take up shelter space, and prevent other tame cats from being saved. LifeLine Animal Project serves greater Atlanta through its “Catlanta” program, providing colony management expertise, traps, instructions, and two clinics to spay/neuter/vaccinate the cats at only $15 per cat! If you see a feral cat and want to help, please contact LifeLine at info@lifelineanimal.org.

Myth: Stop feeding the cats, and they

will go away. Cats will stay in their neighborhood, live on meager food supplies, and continue to reproduce.

Myth: Cats can be relocated to the

woods. Less than 50% of relocated cats survive, and releasing cats in a different area is animal

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing. They each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. Pets for Life Atlanta 404.335.8463 Forgotten Paws Pet Rescue www.forgottenpaws.com.... 404.993.7958 Pup & Cat Co. Pets Need

It is estimated that 75-85% of all cats and dogs that are two years and older suffer from dental diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis.

Dental Care

Too! D

id you know that regularly brushing your pet’s teeth and providing them with a healthy diet and plenty of chew toys can go a long way toward keeping their mouth healthy? Many pets show signs of gum disease by the time they’re two years old because they aren’t provided with proper mouth care, and bad breath is often the first sign of a problem. Give your pet regular home checks and follow the tips below for a healthy mouth and a dazzling smile! 1. Sniff your pet’s breath. If it’s especially offensive and is accompanied by a loss of appetite, vomiting, excessive drinking or urinating, it’s time to visit the vet. 2. Once a week examine gums and teeth. Gums should be pink and teeth clean. 3. Signs of Oral Disease – Bad Breath; excessive drooling; inflamed gums; tumors in the gums; cysts under the tongue; loose teeth. Your pet may have a problem in their mouth or gastrointestinal system and should be checked by a vet. 4. Practice - Use a pet toothbrush and pet tooth paste or clean gauze wrapped around your finger. Never use fluoride with pups under six months and do not use human toothpaste. Massage in a circular motion. 5. Gnawing on bones, antlers and toys massages the gums, satisfies the desire to chomp, reduces stress, and helps keep teeth clean by scraping away tartar. Contributed by Top Dogs Pet Boutique

Black female seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I’m a very good looking girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hand. Rub me the right way and watch me respond. I’ll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Kiss me and I’m yours. Call 404-875-5331 and ask for Daisy.

What is Compounding?

Compounded medications are “made from scratch” – individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient's specific needs.

A Stump For A Tail You can’t buy loyalty, they say. I bought it though, the other day; You can’t buy friendship, tried and true, Well just the same, I bought that too. I made my bid, and on the spot, bought love and faith and a whole lot of happiness, so all in all the purchase price was pretty small. I bought a single trusting heart, that gave devotion from the start. If you think these things are not for sale, Buy a brown-eyed puppy with a stump for a tail. -author unknown

or any situation that might require assistance. As stated on the Epilepsy.com website (https://www.epilepsy.com/get-help/staying-safe/seizure-dogs ), some people with epilepsy have reported that their dogs are able to "sense" when a seizure is coming and therefore are able to reduce their seizure-related injuries. It is suspected that dogs can detect some change (for instance, an odor) that warns them of an approaching seizure, although no scientific studies of seizure alerting dogs have been completed. This alerting behavior has been reported in a number of different breeds and their predictive skills vary considerably for different patients and different dogs. One consistent factor, however, is that in order for the dog to effectively communicate an impending seizure event it must believe that it will be "listened to" by its bonded human. Imagine the benefits of learning to recognize and effectively manage your stress response through your emotional mirrors... your dogs. Consider how you might be impacting your

dogs' current behaviors or even their ability to serve. Service such as seizure alerting cannot be guaranteed, however through the application of the principles of Engaging the Human Animal Bond in Tandem (EnHABiT), you can develop the listening, communication and bonding skills that are necessary for dogs to "feel" heard, understood, appreciated and impactful in improving situations. Regardless of the service or alerting outcome, when you learn how to effectively manage your stress response, you will FEEL less stress, closer bonds in all of your relationships, more in control, and have an improved quality of life.

Loving Home Wanted

“ “

Meet Louie, who is 3 and is just the most AWESOME fellow. He is just loving life after he was abandoned and left to starve and freeze in his pen. Louie was skin and bone living in the most horrendous conditions imaginable. Louie had heartworm and was not expected to live. Today Louie is cured and is now a happy, healthy well adjusted boy. It has been a long road to recovery for Louie but you would never know it as he is just a big baby who would give you the world. Louie should be an only dog/companion pet. Louie’s favorite pastime is to ride on the golf cart or car and get his cheese burger/hold the onions/ no fries from the lady at the drive thru. He actually speaks when he sees you and will pin you down at bedtime because he does not want to be left, he will then fall asleep knowing you are there. New Era Of Health For Pets

he hip inflammation that has followed Ty, our pit bull, everywhere he goes has disappeared. I was skeptical going in but was amazed at how quickly Revitamal worked. Two weeks ago, we were helping him onto the bed and into the car. He limped when running and was nervous to play. Now Ty is jumping onto the bed and into the car, running full speed, and playing joyfully. If your pet has an issue right now, consider giving Revitamal a chance.” – Tyler Ohlmann Revitamal works by reducing inflammation, is veterinarian approved, and can significantly reduce allergy symptoms, joint pain, and skin and coat issues. “In 90+% of my trials the pet has shown dramatic and quick changes in activity levels, renewed playfulness, increased appetite, improved coat condition and decreased pain. Their energy level is higher, they’re much more full of life… The results have been nothing short of remarkable!” Dr. Marty Becker, DVM Revitamal.com

Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets stay in their homes when their families fall on difficult times. Daffy’s provides pet food to people who are struggling financially and would otherwise have to give up their pets. This helps keep pets out of shelters or abandoned in the streets. In turn, the euthanasia rates at animal-control facilities decrease, thus lowering the tax burden on citizens whose tax dollars fund those countyrun animal shelters.

Meet hiking companions, Romona Tomato and Giuseppe! Giuseppe is a 3.5 year old terrier mix we adopted in Vancouver, WA, and Romona is a mostly Papillon we rescued July of 2013. Romona came to us pretty rough. We got her off puppy death row from a rural south Georgia shelter. She was covered in fleas and her hair was all matted. But now she is as pretty as they get. Giuseppe enjoys long walks on the beach, chasing squirrels and rolling in dead things. Romona likes soft pillows, chewies and agility courses. ‑ 66 ‑
