A Letter We are in the midst of another year of teachers creating transformative experiences for students — experiences that have been enhanced or made possible by your generous gifts. As such, I am thrilled to introduce this year’s Impact Report, a collection of stories that illuminate the incredible impact donors like you have had on the St. Anne’s-Belfield School community. Each year, your contributions transform dreams into realities, aspirations into achievements, and challenges into triumphs. Our Impact Report is more than just numbers and statistics; it’s a testament to the power of your philanthropy. r from the Head of School Take the members of our First LEGO League Robotics team. Last year, five Grades 7 & 8 students took place in the competition. This year, the team expanded to include Grade 6 students and an impressive 38 students. Your gifts helped provide the opportunity to both expand the team and allow St. Anne’s-Belfield to host the regional First LEGO League competition for enthusiastic STEM students throughout the region. Then there’s our entire Pre-School – Grade 2 faculty. Thanks to your contributions, they received transformative professional development that they are already applying in their early childhood classrooms to benefit our youngest learners. And of course, there are our Upper School students, who this year have

access to the remarkable resources within the newly renovated Randolph Hall. Gifts both large and small combined to create the Lourie Learning Center, Tess Majors ’19 Recording Studio, food lab, and innovation space. We are thrilled to show you this space in photos for those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit in person. These stories, like the many others you’ll discover in our report, showcase the profound impact of your annual gifts. They illustrate how, together, we are shaping the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow. But our journey doesn’t end here. With your continued support, we can look forward to even greater achievements this year, such as the completion of the Portrait of a

2036 Graduate strategic plan, and the launch of our semicentennial celebration of the merger between the St. Anne’s and Belfield Schools into what is now St. Anne’s-Belfield. Donors Fuel Unforgettable Upper School Experiences Students build connections with nature and each other during Grade Level Experiences

A spirit of boundless opportunities, exploration, and the warm embrace of community beckoned students to the Greenway Rise Campus one crisp fall morning. Instead of regular classes, Sept. 11 would be the first Grade-Level Experience (GLE) of the 2023-24 year. The program’s special offerings—powered in part by donors to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield—introduce an intentional change of pace and place to build the connections among students that empower them to take healthly risks academically and athletically. GLEs build upon the firm foundation of community and help students find their footing to engage in our core values of Curiosity and Agency. Our Grade 9 students seized the day with infectious enthusiasm. Led by Grade 9 Dean Kate Bussey, freshmen spent a laughter-filled morning in the Student Activity Center (SAC) bonding through fun activities and brainstorming superscripted years indicate history of consecutive giving

their class motto. Then, they ventured to Carter Mountain Orchard, enjoying apple cider donuts and the view. Each student paired up with a classmate they did not know to pick apples. Student Carter K. ’27, new to the St. Anne’s-Belfield community raved, “This was a great way to meet new people.” The goal of all of the Grade-Level Experiences is to bring each class together and help them feel like a unified community within the larger school community.

“Overall I would say the whole day was a success,” said Carter. “It helped optimize the tight-knit community of St. Anne’s-Belfield and was an extremely fun and laidback way to connect with friends, grab some food, and look out at some stunning mountainous views.”

Grade 10 students stepped into a world of trust, teamwork, and communication at the High Ropes Course at UVA’s Poplar Ridge. They navigated balance courses and other trust-building activities, climbed between trees more than 60’ in the air, and rode a 250’ zipline back to the ground with a deepened sense of class camaraderie. The day ended back on campus with “recess,” including board games, basketball and volleyball, even a dance party! Hunter Y. ’26 reflected that the

experience “gave me a chance to get to know my classmates better and helped all of us feel more comfortable and connected as a class.” Understanding that a deep sense of belonging is vital to student success at school, as well as a core part of the St. Anne’sBelfield ethos, Dean of Students Jeremy Hart and Head of the Upper School Beth Miller, P. ’22 & ’25, will be prioritizing multiple GLEs this school year.

Weaving their bonds amid the tranquil beauty of Virginia, Grade 11 students embarked on an outdoor retreat. Groups were deployed to Crabtree Falls, the Priest, White Rock Falls, and St. Mary’s Falls, with the thrill and challenge of the hikes providing the backdrop for getting out of your comfort zone — in more ways than one. Drawing parallels between their environment and conversations with classmates, Cadigan P. ’25 remarked, “As I hiked up the trail and staircases of Crabtree Falls, looking out at the Virginia expanse below me, I contemplated a riddle being discussed among our group. Though a simple and funny riddle, our entire hiking

group was contemplating deeply to figure it out.” To Cadigan, this fun combination of cardio workout and crowdsourcing conversation to solve the riddle represented the essence of the GLE. “Each individual was put in a group of peers, got to experience the beautiful nature around Virginia, and bonded with others they might not have known over simple topics.”

Grade 12 found adventure and serene moments of reflection a mere 5 miles away at Ragged Mountain Reservoir. Students could choose to canoe, kayak, walk the trails, fish, or spend time in quiet contemplation through writing, reading, or talking to classmates and faculty. Amelia B. ’24 remarked on the variety of activities she was able to enjoy with her fellow seniors. “I kayaked out to the middle of the reservoir with my classmates, went on a casual walk with my friends, listened to stories about fishing extravaganzas, and then gathered with my classmates to eat lunch and reflect on the various moments of the day.” Students felt that the experience allowed them to make deeper personal connections with

their classmates while also having a chance to recharge in nature to help them prepare for the rigorous year ahead.

As the leaders of the School, some members of the senior class did not go to Ragged Mountain, but instead joined the Grades 9 and 10 GLEs as student leaders and mentors to the younger members of the Upper School community.

Bringing Outdoor Learning into Pre-School

As stewards of an outdoor Pre-School, the St. Anne’s-Belfield’s teaching team were ecstatic to visit the natural education experts at WildRock this summer! Having hosted the WildRock team in our space before, it was even more enriching and meaningful to see their materials, natural playscapes, and the setup of their indoor spaces in context.

“We all walked away with new techniques to foster meaningful connections between our students and their world,” says Pre-School Teacher Becky Gall, aka Ms. Becky to her three- and four-yearold students. For example, the simple addition of a wonder shelf has opened up a new world of scientific inquiry and investigation for Ms. Becky’s Hedgehog Class. “Where did this leaf come from? How does its size/shape/texture compare to the other leaves on the shelf? What would we do if we wanted to learn more?” Questions like these lead to identifying the trees in the forest, sketching them in our field journals, and creating our own book of native Virginia trees — all inspired by one little leaf. For our students, there is no end to the benefits of outdoor learning: the power of curiosity, the thrill of discovery, the rewards of determination, and the love of learning. We are empowering our youngest Saints to become lifelong learners. “We are so grateful to have received so many resources, approaches, and ideas from the combined knowledge of the WildRock team!” says Pre-School Teacher Elizabeth Lane. There is no doubt that these Pre-School students are ready for the revolutionized programming that awaits them in Kindergarten!

Leveling Up Lower School Literacy Instruction

“Last year, I set a goal to examine our phonics instruction,” says Emily Walton, P. ’35, reading specialist and Reading and Language Arts Department chair at the Lower School. Walton found that children were entering Kindergarten at St. Anne’s with varying levels of reading readiness. Teachers were using diverse resources between grade levels. Additionally, gains in reading instruction were outpacing gains in spelling instruction. Walton created a plan to bring in evidence-based practices, align the curriculum vertically, and implement regular assessment and progress monitoring. OrtonGillingham (OG) is the gold standard in research-backed literacy instruction, and donor funds for professional development

made it possible for eight teachers from K through Grade 2, including Walton, to become trained in this inclusive program. Immersed in a five-day, 30-hour training, St. Anne’s educators learned OG methods which implement auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning to help students connect decoding (reading skills) with encoding (writing skills). By utilizing OG, all K – 2 students will have the strategies and foundational skills necessary to read with confidence, affording students more cognitive freedom for understanding longer and more complicated texts in future grades. In anticipation of this, plans for curriculum restructuring are in the works for Grades 3 and 4. “Students are going to enter those grades with more robust skills, so we want to carry that momentum forward. We want vertical alignment in K through 4, overall.”

Keeping Our Saints Safe

St. Anne’s-Belfield demonstrates its commitment not only to academic excellence but also to student safety by staffing two full-time, licensed athletic trainers. These professionals are responsible for individualizing student rehabilitation programs after injury as well as for providing first aid care at athletic events. Donor support of The Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield allowed Jessica Matula, P. ’27 & ’28, cohead athletic trainer, to become certified in Airway Management in Equipment-Laden Athletes at the National Athletic Trainers Association Annual Convention. This specialized intervention allows Matula to differentiate spinal injury from cardiac arrest in a student-athlete and to implement

a life-saving protocol within 90 seconds of recognizing the need for care.

Ongoing education for athletic trainers is vital, as they have a unique role to play in the event of a serious sports injury. “EMS are not familiar with sports equipment the way we are,” says Matula. “We know how to get the equipment off quickly and stabilize the student in preparation for EMS to arrive.”

Matula stresses the importance of hands-on practice, regular drilling, and medical meetings before highcontact sports events, though not just in preparation for game day. “We are in communication with the coaching staff daily to know when they are practicing skills with contact so that we can be on site. Our goal is to have top athletes without injury.” From our youngest Saints to our seniors, students are impacted at every stage of their journey by these gifts to The Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield.

World-renowned Musicians Perform for the Middle School Violinist Yevgeny Kutik has appeared on stages around the globe, gaining renown along the way as a winner of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition, Salon de Virtuosi Grant recipient, and Tanglewood Music Center Jules Reiner Violin Prize, among others. He’s a keynote speaker for the Jewish Federations of North America, released a top 5 Billboard Classical album, and has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and in “The New York Times.” Before international acclaim, however, he was simply Yevgeny, Boston University student and classmate to St. Anne’s-Belfield Upper School Orchestra Director Justin Esposito. When the UVA Tuesday Evening Concert Series announced he would be performing a concert in Charlottesville with equallyacclaimed pianist, Anna Polonsky, superscripted years indicate history of consecutive giving

Mr. Esposito picked up the phone and asked: “Hey Yevgeny, would you be willing to stay an extra night and play a private concert for our students?” And so on November 30, 2022, with thanks to donations to the Arts Boosters, Middle and Upper School strings students were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Performing in Brennan Hall, Mr. Kutik and Ms. Polonsky played Sonata in A Major, Op. 100 by Brahms, Le Bœf sur le Toit by Milhaud, and Tzigane by Ravel. Interspersed with the performances, the musicians provided engaging commentary, explained musical techniques, and took questions from the audience. “This second movement is unique because they are normally beautiful and peaceful,” explained Ms. Polonsky, a Steinway artist, Juilliard School

graduate, and Vassar College faculty member whose performances have taken her everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to on stage with YoYo Ma. “But this one gets interrupted by little playful elves. And then the peaceful lullaby returns. Coding Comes Alive in the First LEGO League

Can you solve a Rubik’s Cube? You could do it without mastering any algorithms if you knew how to program a LEGO Robotics set. Just mention the word LEGO and creations of brightly colored minibricks spring to mind, but LEGO at the St. Anne’s-Belfield Middle School are a kit of a different color. One of the primary goals of Robbie Munsey’s, K – 8 Computer Science Teacher, when he started at St. Anne’s-Belfield was resurrecting the popular robotics program that was paused during the pandemic. Munsey knew that First LEGO League (FLL) would fit the bill perfectly. An exciting competition, FLL develops learning, confidence, and teamwork in students by tasking them with problems to solve via coding and robotics. computer to display ‘hello world’ on a computer screen.” In its first year, the Robotics Program at St. Anne’s drew five students from Grades 7 and 8. Without a dedicated space for the team, Munsey’s robotics students used the computer science lab as a base to hone their coding skills. During their first competition, the team earned the highest robot performance score.

“It’s so fun to watch the evolution of the kids,” reflects Munsey. Students might start with ‘simple ideas’ but, as their confidence and knowledge grows, these ideas become endlessly more complicated and require increasingly more sophisticated equipment. Through generous donations, the school was able to purchase an additional robotics table, a substantial amount of robotic hardware, bring on three more coaches, increase participation to 38 students, and cover the cost of

registration fees and team T-shirts. Additionally, they were able to secure a permanent home for the program and all their equipment. Most importantly, support from our donors is essential to making science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) accessible for diverse populations. Starting the FLL program with Grade 6 students engages girls and students of color before they typically start to opt out. As the Head of the Middle School and the parent of an FLL participant, Marie Reed, P. ’27 & ’30 is able to see the program from several perspectives. “It builds a community for kids who may not find it through other avenues and creates friendships across different peer groups.” This inclusion and teamwork is bringing kids out of their shells, instilling confidence that they never thought they would have. Even students who are not particularly interested in becoming coders in the future have

a place on the team because the program taps into strengths in all areas. Munsey recalls how, without direction, a Grade 6 teammate created a slideshow to emphasize a plan that they wanted to implement. FLL pulls kids in, and this matters during competition season when students are judged on their social interactions and collaborative skills in addition to the programming. When competing, FLL participants are assessed on several core values: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun. Middle School Mathematics Department Chair Sara Kronstain, P. ’33, ’35, & ’37 is already seeing the benefit these values have for her students. “While exploring the Innovation core value, students need to think about something they love outside of robotics, then think about the problems people face that limit them from participating in that activity.”

Each time the teams meet, they focus on a different core value, pushing them beyond their comfort zone and learning important life skills. “We appreciate how the program’s core values intertwine with something the kids love,” Kronstain notes. Now with over half of Grade 6 students participating, Munsey and his team have a secondary goal of designing a program for this cohort that will continue in the Upper School. Not only are students excited to compete again in Grades 7 and 8, but it’s important that students have a place where they belong. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to take responsibility for their learning, their passion, and their achievement,” Munsey reflects. “It’s one of the most powerful lessons you can give.”

Alumni Awards Each year, the School recognizes alumni classes which have made significant contributions to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, our community’s annual giving program. Awards recognize both participation and dollars contributed. The Malone Cup was established as a tribute to the class with the highest percentage of donors to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, our community’s annual giving program. The cup is named for Pamela Malone, a beloved teacher who dedicated 34 years to enriching the lives of St. Anne’s-Belfield School students. The 2022–2023 award was given to the Class of 1983. The Peter V. R. Weeks Award is named in memory of senior master, Peter Weeks, who served as assistant headmaster, athletic director, coach, teacher, mentor, role model, and counselor for students and teachers alike between 1961 - 1981. The award recognizes the highest level of giving participation from the classes of the 1970s and 1980s. The winner of the Peter V.R. Weeks Award is the Class of 1971.

The Randolph Murray Bowl honors a dedicated alumna, Bruce Randolph Murray ’65, who with her family has given generously of her time, talent, and treasures for decades. The award is given to the reunion class with the largest total gift. This year’s winner of the Randolph Murray Bowl is the Class of 1993. The Young Alumni Participation Award recognizes the class within 14 years of graduation having the greatest level of participation in giving to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, our community’s annual giving program. Shining a Light on Girls’ & Women’s Sports On September 8, the soft rays of twilight cast its nightly spell over the Belfield Campus, painting the Field Hockey and Girls’ Lacrosse Turf in shades of lavender and blush, giving way to cobalt as the sun drew further down the horizon. The Saints gathered that evening, however, were there to witness a different kind of magic: girls playing their very first outdoor nighttime game in the School’s 114-year history. Earlier that evening, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony heralded the momentous occasion. Made possible by the generosity of the donors listed below, the dazzling new lighting system will enable new levels of play for Field Hockey and Girls’ Lacrosse student-athletes.

Dedication of Lourie Learning Center and Tess Majors ’19 Recording Studio At the end of August 2023, the Lourie Learning Center and Tess Majors ’19 Recording Studio was opened. The renovation of the Randolph Hall space was built on Dr. Autumn Graves’ vision for the school to deepen community engagement, broaden experiential and co-curricular learning offerings, and sustain programmatic excellence well into the 21st century. The space includes a high-tech makerspace and food lab, learning areas for classrooms and small groups outfitted with modern technologies, open spaces with movable furniture that allow for meetings, lectures, and workshops, and a dedicated area to learn Audio Engineering techniques, record music, turn interviews into podcast or build a college portfolio. The Lourie Learning Center is named for former Head of School, David Lourie, P. ’18 & ’21 and the music and video recording studio is named in honor of Tess Majors ’19.
