Winter/Spring Sports Wrap-Up

The St. Martin’s athletics program continued to grow and develop during the 2018-2019 winter and spring seasons. The YPL and swim teams benefited from increased turn-outs, and three spring teams brought home trophies.

“Our winter and spring athletes demonstrated great sportsmanship and work ethic this year,” said Athletic Director Mark McDaniel. “I am proud of the effort they put in and look forward to many of them returning next year.”

WINTER

The A-girls basketball team had a great mix of underclassmen talent, 8th-grade leadership and team camaraderie that made for a fun season to watch. The B-girls team demonstrated a strong work ethic and positive attitude and played competitively every game. With the help of strong 7th-grade leadership, the C-girls basketball team finished its season with renewed focus and energy.

The A-boys basketball team visibly improved over the course of the season and lost to the eventual champions in round two of the playoffs. The B-boys team demonstrated

SPRING

The golf team played strong all season and finished second in the MAAC team championship tournament after losing the tiebreaker for first place. Each player honed his skills and knowledge of the game throughout the season. coachability and strong work ethic and made it to the semifinals game in the top bracket of their end-of-season tournament. The C-boys basketball team developed both as a team and individually, and each player finished the season with increased confidence and understanding of the game.

The SMES swim team placed in several individual events and also competed in team relays.

The baseball team won its league championship in a hard, close-fought game. Eighth-grade leadership and underclassmen talent proved effective throughout the season.

The SMES youth passing league program benefited from an influx of players this season and fielded three teams. Each team finished in the top three of its division, and one B-team clinched first place at the end-of-season tournament.

The girls soccer Team played hard all season and never gave up. After a slow start, the girls turned up the heat and finished the season strong.

For the third year in a row, the girls tennis team won the MAAC championship. The team showed a lot of grit and were undefeated in league play. The boys tennis team demonstrated skill and a strong work ethic all season long. They finished second in regular season play and lost a tight semifinals match in the end-ofseason tournament.
