Dear friends, Peace of Christ! The story is told that St. Ignatius, in 1540, on his way to Rome to place himself and his companions at the service of the Pope, stopped at a small chapel at a crossroads called La Storta. For years, Ignatius has prayed to Mary to “place me with your Son,” but he had never been granted this prayer in a way he understood. Then, at La Storta, Ignatius had a vision, not of Mary, but of God the Father, speaking to Jesus as he carried his cross. “I want you to take this man into your company.” Then Jesus spoke, “I want you in my company. Know that I will be propitious to you in Rome.” What is interesting about this vision—besides the fact that it happened at all—is that when Jesus promises to be good to “you” in Rome, the word is not singular, but plural. The promise of grace is given not to Ignatius alone, but to a whole community, placed as Companions of Jesus beneath his cross. This year’s theme at St Joseph School, Open to Grace, reminds me of that wayside chapel at La Storta, where Ignatius opened himself to grace, only to receive grace for all those who would follow his path. Our God is a God of abundance, a God who gives us not just more than we ask, but more than we can hope or imagine. If we open ourselves —even a little bit—to grace, God will open the floodgates, and carry us to places we never expected. So it was for Ignatius; so it has been in the history of St. Joseph; so will it be for us today.

Open to grace both commands and describes the St. Joseph Community, whether in the new physical structures, built to better serve the diverse learning styles of our students; or in the revised academic structures, which allow both elementary students and middle school students to be nurtured and challenged in appropriate ways. It is present in the abiding commitment of faculty and staff, and in the inquisitive and generous spirit of our students. Open to grace describes our alumni, who carry what they received at St. Joseph into the world, and our parents, who constantly seek new ways to build our community and care for all students. Open to grace is the challenge given to administrators (and Pastors) who seek to ensure that the example of Christ is present in all that we do and in the way we treat one another. Dear friends, We’ve had a remarkable year in so many ways. As we look back on the 2013-14 school year: The critical foundation of our fundraising is the School Pledge Drive. The monies raised through this important endeavor help us bridge the gap between what we charge for tuition and what it actually costs us to educate each child: a delta of about $2,500. Thanks to the diligent work of co-chairs Douglas and Alida Oles, we were able to raise over $563,000, well over our goal of $515,000. Proceeds from the School Pledge Drive helped fund our financial aid budget, make needed improvements and changes to our facility, continue to upgrade our technology infrastructure and several other items. We saw a groundswell of support for more targeted fundraisers this year. The inaugural Spring Luncheon was a huge success, raising just shy of $150,000 as of this printing to help upgrade our kitchen and cafeteria. I’m grateful to Heather Christo, Olga Dyckman, Kim Nisbet and Jeannine Christofilis for the vision and hard work that got this event off the ground. Given the event’s success, I think you can expect to see this event become an annual tradition, with the proceeds benefiting a different cause from year to year. Of course, the auction raised more money than the previous year. Because of the countless volunteers, and of course, this year’s chairs Ed and Jill Allen, we enjoyed a fabulous weekend of fun and community… and fundraising. In total, the auction grossed $566,300. A huge success, indeed! Finally, I am pleased to note that over 112 people contributed to the expansion/remodel project that is currently underway. This year, we received $710,000 in pledges for the project. We have some more ground to cover on this front, but I’m sure we’ll continue to raise money for this project over the summer and into the fall.

Someone sent me a card recently. On the top of the card was written a quote that apparently hung in Albert Einstein’s office at Princeton. It reads, “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” This report definitely attempts to “count,” yet we know that so much of what you do is not easily counted, yet tantamount to our success. What is the St. Joseph School Endowment? The Endowment for St. Joseph School is a fund built from donations by individuals and institutions over the past 35 years. It serves as a permanent funding source and provides funding to the school to support financial aid, academic programs and teacher enrichment. The fund principal must remain intact in perpetuity, and only the annual distribution is allocated for Endowment purposes. This allows donations to have an impact over a longer period of time. Our purpose is to strengthen and sustain, for years to come, a rich, faith-centered academic experience for all students at St. Joseph School. Through the support of generous donors, the Endowment finances student tuitions, supports teacher-enrichment programs, and pays for special academic programs and opportunities. Each year, grants from the Endowment enable dozens of children to attend St. Joseph School, help stimulate our students’ academic achievement and their unique passions for learning and further the skills of our teaching staff. Because we spend only the interest earned from the principal, the Endowment will support these goals in perpetuity, advancing St Joseph School’s mission to educate and inspire students to reach their God-given potential for many generations to come. Our vision is for the Endowment to be the sole funding source of financial aid at St. Joseph School.
