ACADEMICS Dear Friends, With the end of the 5-‐year Centennial Campaign and another fantas6c year at St. Joseph School, we wanted to take 6me to thank you for your generosity and update you on the status of the Endowment for St. Joseph School. In the past year, endowment funds were used for financial aid, academic program support and teacher enrichment—here are some highlights on how your contribu6on made a difference. St. Joseph School makes a strong effort to ensure access to a quality Catholic educa5on. Having a student body from a range of economic backgrounds is a core value of the school. In the 2012-‐2013 year, the school contributed $932,020 in financial aid to 134 students, represen6ng 22% of the school popula6on. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the endowment contributes over $250,000 to this amount each year. We’ve made great strides in improving academic achievement through the Learning Resource Center. We supported over 100 students, providing extra one-‐to-‐one support, access to technology-‐based tools for reading comprehension and more. We are excited about implemen6ng a co-‐ teaching model in the coming school year. Not only will the LRC specialists work with students in the Learning Resource Center, they will also have opportuni6es to teach in partnership with classroom teachers, thus extending the reach of the LRC. Your contribu6on also made it possible to provide enrichment programs for teachers. Last year funding supported extra training on SmartBoards and Powerschool. Our teaching staff is our most important asset and geYng them the tools and training for teaching in the 21st century is cri6cal. We thank you for your generosity in helping us educate and inspire students to meet their God-‐given poten6al. Gratefully,

Patrick Fennessy

What is the St. Joseph School Endowment?

The Endowment for St. Joseph School is a $6 million fund built from donations by individuals and institutions over the past 34 years. It serves as a permanent funding source and provides funding to the school to support financial aid, academic programs and teacher enrichment. The fund principal must remain intact in perpetuity and only the annual distribution is allocated for Endowment purposes. This allows for donations to have an impact over a longer period of time than if it were spent all at once.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER SPOTLIGHT The LRC focuses on the academic needs of students and helps them achieve success by addressing the specific needs of each student to reach grade level standards. The LRC staff looks at the whole child, from social to emotional and behavioral health. They collaborate with teachers when they need academic support or a child is at risk, looking at each child’s God-given talent in order to provide them with what they need to be successful.

“We believe that the encouragement we got and the help he received changed my son’s way of thinking. He will have to work harder in school, but he is up for the challenge. We are so grateful to LRC staff for her tireless and consistent efforts to inspire students to not give up."

“The LRC has been extremely helpful to both of our children. When we came to St. Joe's our oldest was a bit behind in math. Her 2nd grade teacher and the LRC teacher worked with her to get caught up through a series of lessons and exercises reviewing some of the basics she was missing. This intervention has been nothing but successful. She now finds math an enjoyable subject and has dreams of being a marine biologist or chemist.” – Upper school parent

– 8th grade parent

The Endowment for St. Joseph School enables the LRC to give students the testing, technology and supplies they need to thrive. Testing is a critical pillar of the LRC’s support for St. Joseph School’s students. Testing allows for the correct diagnosis of learning disabilities. The LRC uses web-based tools to help students with reading comprehension or phonics to help children read, articulate and decode English. Every trimester, the staff at the LRC observes growth in literacy, reading and writing and overall language fluency. Their work results in keeping St. Joseph School’s students where they need to be in their grade level. Perhaps the benefits of the LRC are best summed in the words of one Lower School parent, “Our children are blessed to attend a school that offers such robust supports to students. We will be forever grateful for the loving interventions LRC provides for our children.” Next year, the LRC will broaden its horizons, adding staff and implementing a Co-Teaching Model. The LRC currently has three full-time specialists, and will add new staff in the 2013-2014 school year, including new specialists for kindergarten, grades 4-5 and a literacy specialist to assist teachers in differentiating learning and materials for accelerated learners. A Co-Teaching Model is a coordinated instructional practice in which two or more educators are simultaneously engaged in the instructional process to academically support the needs of all students.

“Our youngest has found the LRC to be extremely helpful dealing with his fine and gross motor delay. LRC staff have been invaluable in navigating the IEP process. We are incredibly grateful that the LRC assisted our son in writing support, testing accommodations, and providing alternative testing methods to ensure he gets the extra help needed.” – Second grade parent

Educating and inspiring students to reach their God-given potential. Our purpose is to strengthen and sustain, for years to come, a rich, faith-centered academic experience for all students at St. Joseph School Through the support of generous donors, the Endowment finances student tuitions, supports teacher-enrichment programs, and pays for special academic programs and opportunities. Each year, grants from the Endowment enable dozens of children to attend St. Joseph School, help stimulate our students’ academic achievement and their unique passions for learning and further the skills of our teaching staff. Because we spend only the interest earned from the principal, the Endowment will support these goals in perpetuity, advancing St Joseph School’s mission to educate and inspire students to reach their God-given potential for many generations to come.
