We’ve had a smooth start to the 2022-2023 school year and we are delighted that parents will be able to be more involved. A great way to stay connected with all the happenings at the school is to attend one of our school council meetings. Our Principal, Mr. Luigi Fortini, attends every council meeting and brings a wealth of information and news to share with the parents. Please consider joining us at our next meeting on Wednesday February 22nd. We look forward to meeting you!
Over the course of the school year, there are many volunteer projects that parents can assist with at the school. We welcome parents to sign up on the volunteer database for these potential opportunities. By adding your name to the database, you will receive emails about volunteer opportunities at the school. We do not send out mass emails regarding volunteer requests; only those who have signed up will receive notifications about volunteering. You are not committing to anything by signing up. Throughout the year, we may require volunteers for: Textbook Distribution, Browns Ball, Fundraising, 60th Anniversary Celebration, Graduation Events, and the Staff Appreciation Lunch. On Monday November 28th, we held the plant pick-up for the Winter Plant Fundraiser. Our wonderful neighbors at Canadian Martyrs Church kindly let us use their hall since the weather was so cold and neither the parent volunteers nor the poinsettias would have been happy outside! Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser. $1900 was raised in support of school projects. In the spring, we will have our Spring Plant Fundraiser where we will sell beautiful, locally-grown plants. Both plant sales help raise money in support of school council initiatives, such as contributions to food hampers, legacy projects for the school’s 60th anniversary, and the annual year-end luncheon to thank our wonderful staff at Saint Francis. These seasonal fundraisers are a great way to encourage our friends and family to have beautiful plants to enjoy while supporting our school. Plant order forms will go out in April.
The blessing and rededication of the school after its modernization took place on April 28, 2022. School Council donated a replica painting of St. Francis of Assisi that is now hanging in the back of the chapel. It adds to our beautiful sacred space.
On December 9th, the Browns Ball returned after 3 years. The students are so excited to be able to enjoy a school dance again. School Council helped with decorating, coat check, concession, and supervision. Thank you to the many parent volunteers that helped with this special event.

With all the craziness of Christmas we often forget to mark each Sunday of Advent. Students in each grade attended Mass to celebrate the Advent season and were encouraged to focus on the four virtues that Jesus brings to us: Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace. If we stop for a moment to think about where these virtues play out in our own life, we can find a deeper connection to the true meaning of Jesus in the world today. It is important to teach our children that the greatest gifts are not the ones that money can buy, but the ones that reflect these virtues. How do we bring love, joy, and peace to the world? How do we offer hope to those in despair? Our school also supported many families through our Christmas Hamper program. Thank you to everyone for your support in helping our school community.
Welcome all students, teachers, staff, and parents of our Saint Francis Community. This year our welcoming theme is “Write your own story.” As the students took their first steps through the front entrance of the school, they were greeted with colorful book covers which represent the individual stories they are writing.
No matter what their interests or talents, this year our students will have the chance to showcase their abilities and try something new. There are opportunities to join different clubs, play sports or participate in our various Fine Arts programs. Student Council encourages students to take action, get involved and become an active part of the Browns community.
Another great way to get involved is to join Student Council. We meet every Monday in room A204 at lunch. We are always working on a school event and would love to have you! This year’s Student Council Executives are:

CLUB DAY
Over the past months we have been very busy preparing student activities and planning upcoming events. Our first event was a club convention in the Brown Gym which promoted various clubs offered this year. We encourage all students to get involved and participate in activities that will enhance their school life and help to create fond and lasting memories.
We held the Fall Sports Rally which introduced the Fall Sport teams. We were very fortunate to have Mr. Heath Brown, a former graduate, participate in the rally and act as our MC. He urged our athletes to excel and put forth their best efforts; and he encouraged all the students to attend games and cheer on their teams. Heath was thrilled to join us in our celebration and he told students that he has very fond memories of his time as a Saint Francis Brown and he hopes that they all feel very proud to be part of something truly special.
FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS
On October 4th, we celebrated the feast day of our patron saint.
Student Council fostered school spirit by encouraging our Browns community to attend our Senior Browns football team playing against Notre Dame at McMahon Stadium. We sold over 1,800 tickets to this event. At the game, Browns fans sported our school colors, wore Browns tattoos, and enthusiastically cheered on our team.
OCTOBER SPIRIT WEEK
Student Council held a Spirit Week in October where we challenged students to demonstrate their school spirit by dressing up each day of the week following a different theme.
NATIONAL JERSEY DAY
On November 17th, we promoted the SSC (School Sports Canada) National Jersey Day. We encouraged students and staff to show their love of sports by wearing their favorite sport’s team or country’s t-shirt, sweater, or jersey, and in true Browns fashion this day was embraced.
JACKET RACKET
Our Jacket Racket fundraiser was once again a great success. In the months of October and November, we collected numerous gently used winter jackets and winter wear for those in need. The Jacket Racket Organization thanked the student body of Saint Francis for our generous donations and support.
Many students and staff at Saint Francis participated in the 30 Hour Famine this month. They fasted from 9:00 am on December 2nd to 3:00 pm on December 3rd to bring awareness to world hunger. Proceeds from this event were used to provide hampers to families in need for Christmas. Thank you to Mr. Le Marquand and Mrs. Ponce for organizing this event.
The SLA students prepared a “pesebre” (Nativity Scene) to prepare for the season of Advent. This was displayed at our District Office from Nov. 18-25. Thank you to Senora Ardila and her students for their wonderful work!
Our St. Francis Extended French Council organized two successful Christmas events on December 14th and December 15th. On the 14th, students had a lot of fun for our annual gingerbread house contest. On December 15th, we had a very successful and excellent Christmas lunch with all the Extended French students. Thank you to Mr. Springett for preparing a delicious meal for our students.
St. Francis Swimming had an amazing season back in the water again! The last time swimming ran was 2019, our Grade 12’s were only in Grade 9! The season began the first week of October. Our 43 dedicated swimmers trained for two months, attending early morning practices every Tuesday and Thursday as well as a Saturday morning practice on the November long weekend at MNP Sports Centre to practice diving in deep water in preparation for the City Championships.
A very special shout-out thank you goes out to our student coaches: Isabella, Macy, Kyla, Vicki, Meredith, and Sydney your leadership, expertise and commitment was truly outstanding! Thank you for coaching on top of your own very busy swim schedules!
The CSHSAA City Championships is one of the largest high school sports events held in Canada. This year it was held on Nov. 29th at MNP. St. Francis competed in the larger Bow Division and had excellent finishes and personal best by many of our swimmers. Congratulations to all our athletes! Go Browns!
A very special thank you and recognition to our parent volunteers!! This year saw the most parent volunteers St. Francis has ever had, and we could not have run this meet without you, our tireless supporters. Thank you for making this day a memorable one!
We look forward to seeing all swimmers on deck next season and we wish our graduating swimmers the best of luck as they move on next year.

We started the year off in August, well before anyone else came to school. Learning, installing our offense, defense, and special teams and getting ready for our 3-month season. When we finally got to our first game, we faced Harry Ainlay. Behind another stretch of practices and development we went on to a couple of well-earned wins before losing our feature game to Notre Dame at McMahon 41-27. We entered into the Provincial Semi Finals against a surging Raymond team who would eventually go on to win the Provincial Finals. Looking back, we realize football in Calgary, and Alberta in general, has improved and as we always aim to compete for the City and Provincial Championships, we will start the road to next season with our off-season workouts getting bigger, faster, stronger! This season for Girls Soccer was exciting and fast paced! Our team was very young and came together quickly under the tutelage of Community Coach Warren Hulme. While goals were sometimes hard to come by, the girls were fierce competitors until the final whistle in every game. Our loss in playoffs came to the eventual Tier 1 winner, Bishop Carroll.
The cross-country team welcomes students of all running abilities. The season included 4 meets involving over 30 Calgary-area schools and up to approximately 90 students per age-level race. St. Francis students have placed in the top 50, top 25, and even top 10. There were also a number of personal best finishes. Three students qualified for the Provincial Championships, and Adam S. placed sixth amongst intermediate boys. Our team is proud of all of our members’ dedication to active living and self-improvement. See you out on the trails!

St. Francis sent four students to compete as a team at the Bragg Creek Golf and Country Club for the Calgary Regional Golf tournament. It was a very chilly start to the day at minus 2 and rain, with the temperature remaining cool for the entire day. This made it extremely difficult on all of the competitors. Despite the poor luck in weather, our team managed to put in some solid rounds and we were able to finish 4th in the 12 team field with a combined score of 234. Go Browns!

The Senior Girls Volleyball team had an awesome season. We placed second in 2 tournaments and first in another. We finished the season second in the league and 4th in playoffs losing 15-11 in the fifth set. Although we did not advance to provincials, we still were ranked 8th in the province. We are so proud of our team. They never gave up and left it all on the court. Special recognition to Anna H. for representing SF at our selects game back in October. A Big thank you to both Skylar and Anna for leading our team. We want to thank all the fans, parents, and teachers that supported us. All the best to you girls in your club season.
The Junior Girls Volleyball team made some noise in our city when they upset the #1 team in the first game of our playoffs. Although they did not advance past the semis, they were a force to be reckoned with! We started the season off strong, mid season we faced a few injuries that shortened our bench. But with the dedication and commitment of our team we battled through to the end. We want to thank all the fans, parents, and teachers that supported us. All the best to you girls in your club season.
Junior Boys Volleyball had a great season working their way up to second place in our division. Unfortunately, we faced our rival for the season, Robert Thirsk, in quarter finals and lost a close, well fought match. The team grew so much together over the season and had many successful tournaments throughout the fall. We look forward to seeing them all next year!
The Senior Boys Volleyball team had a great season. The team consisted of 7 Grade 12s and 6 Grade 11s. The team competed in 4 tournaments and grew together as a team throughout the season. The team made playoffs, but unfortunately lost out in the first round. We want to wish our Grade 12s the best of luck in their future endeavors and we look forward to another great season next year!
Senior Girls Basketball Team
The Senior Girls Basketball team is excited to get the 2022-23 season going. This year the team consists of ten Grade 12 players and three Grade 11 players, of which six are returning from last year. The Browns are hoping to build on last season with tournaments planned in Red Deer and Edmonton, as well as others around the Calgary area. The Browns pride themselves on their defense, rebounding and structured attack on offense. Watch for this team to continue to improve with the hope of peaking before the start of playoffs.
Junior Girls Basketball Team
The Junior Girls Basketball team is off to a great start this season. They have already played in two tournaments and won their first league game. They were 2nd place in our home tournament. The girls are great at working as a team, and have already seen big improvements in skill. We are very excited about this talented group of girls, and what is to come this season!
Senior Boys Basketball Team
Our Browns team is an extremely athletic group, hardworking, and a group that loves the game basketball. We are very excited for the season to start and have fans back in the stands. The Browns have tremendous leadership from the captains and are poised to have a successful season. Go Browns GO!!
Junior Boys Basketball Team
Our 2022/23 Junior Boys Basketball team is going to be a fast and competitive team. Our squad is made up of 8 Grade Ten players and 4 Grade 11 players. At the RIT tournament we had three very close games, losing two but culminating with a 15 point comeback and overtime victory in the third game. We are looking forward to a year of teamwork and growth.
SFI53 was hosted by the Senior Boys Basketball Team on December 17th and 18th and it was awesome to have the student body cram the Browns Den for basketball. The fans in sport are the drivers of our players’ energy, who feed off the cheers and demonstrate their skills. After three years we were thrilled to see the support given and school pride exuded in the pep rally and our opening match versus Chestermere. St. Francis Senior Boys Team won that game 71-60 to advance to semifinals. Our success is all based on the effort given at both ends of the floor demonstrated by the hustle for the ball, defense, and making buckets! Coaches Ferrero and Meadows showed off the tradition and history of Browns Basketball by welcoming the fraternity of past coaches including Gary Deman, founder of the St. Francis Invitational. Merry Christmas from the coaches, players, and trainers of your Senior Boys team...and we look forward to having you at more games this season!
Congratulations to our St. Francis wrestlers. After competing in a few meets, they are undefeated! These athletes are excellent representatives of the sport and our school community.

The bands and choirs at St. Francis High School have been very busy preparing for Christmas concerts!!
The band performed at Saint Basil Junior High on November 30 and the choir participated in the district online advent coral festival. Our Jazz Band and Jazz Choir performed at the musical gala on November 23. They did a great job for their first performance of the year! The choir also sang at all the advent liturgy’s at the Canadian Martyrs Church on November 30th, December 7th, 13th, and 14th. The choir will be doing a mall concert in December and are looking forward to spreading Christmas cheer!
Our students are always very busy playing in the community, and two of our piano players helped celebrate the Italian Centre’s Anniversary this past fall and students Caleb R. and Malcolm L. played at the 70th Anniversary Celebration!
The band and choir had a wonderful music retreat in Banff this past November, and we accomplished so much and also enjoyed time together making music in Banff!
The band will be competing in the Alberta International Band Festival in February and the choir will be competing in Alberta Choralfest in March. They will also be participating in the Okanagan Contando Music Festival in April. There is never a moment where we aren’t preparing for a given performance, festival, competition, or liturgy. Our music students give so much to the Saint Francis community. We are proud of them! We invite you to come support them at the Christmas concert on December 19th at the Rozsa Centre.
We are privileged to have 24 International students studying at Saint Francis High School this semester from four different continents. We will be saying good bye to three of these students at the end of semester one., Laura V. (Germany), Ruth M. (Spain), and Gala L-Z (Chile) will be returning to their families for semester two. We will miss these wonderful young ladies. Please keep in touch! God bless.
Our Indigenous Studies students are working on a project called, “The Canadian Library, Micro Gallery”, which promotes awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and children. They are covering and labeling the spines with the names of these people. Once complete, these books will be sent to Ottawa to be displayed as part of a library honoring the Missing and Indigenous people.
The two shows that I have been in so far this year have been great. The Advanced Acting show, A Timeless Journey, had pirates, time travel and elements of a rom-com and we got to write it! From the beginning, we’re the ones running the show. We came together and worked hard and it paid off, in the end, the show was amazing. Dex Delaney in A Stranger in Balzac was also really fun, from a comedy to a film noir, it couldn’t have been more different than the Advanced Acting show, and yet it was just as enjoyable. We spent a lot of time together in the theatre during rehearsals, and new friendship were formed. I think we will all miss it, but we look forward to having our cast photo on the Drama Wall of Fame. Now, I’m looking forward to the dance, show, Romeo and Juliet. Some of my former cast members are in it, and I’ll be sure to be in the audience, cheering them on. Abiola F. (Gr. 12)
On November 23rd we hosted our Fine Arts Gala at Saint Francis. The students in our Fine Arts courses showcased their gifts and talents through music, dance, drama, and artwork! The students and teachers in our Foods option provided all of the tasty treats at this event. Thank you to all of the students and teachers who participated in the gala. A special thanks, as well, to all of the guests who attended and supported our Fine Arts Program that evening.
A very big thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas food drive. We were able to provide several of our school families with hampers and gift cards. A special thanks to our ESII students for doing such a great job sorting all the food and many other students who helped to put the hampers together.
St. Francis Community You are the best!!! We stuffed 73 sets of socks after school and there were extra supplies and cash donations to support vulnerable members of our city through the FCJ Centre and Alpha House! SEMESTER TWO COURSE CHANGES
Students looking to make changes to their Semester Two timetables must do so by meeting with their assigned counsellor before the start of Semester Two. By doing so well in advance of Semester Two start up, counsellors can provide information about course sequencing and selection, credit recovery, planning for next-grade and post-secondary planning.

APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION
Students have been submitting their completed graduation applications to Student Services since early December. Counsellors will be reviewing these applications in January and meeting with students whose applications contain irregularities so that a goal-to-graduate plan can be created.
SUICIDE AWARENESS PRESENTATION WRAP-UP
Over the past six weeks, all our grade ten students have had the opportunity to be part of our annual Suicide Awareness Presentation. Canadian Mental Health facilitators work with our counsellors so that students receive valuable and up-to-date information about the topic of suicide awareness. We are very grateful of the expertise that Canadian Mental Health brings to our students each year. Thank you CMH!
CINDERELLA GOWN PROJECT
The Cinderella Gown Project began in Calgary in 2005 as a small project at a local high school. Its goal then and now is to help teens attend their graduation celebration by providing a graduation gown for students who might otherwise not be able to purchase one. On October 25th, students at SFHS had the opportunity to meet post-secondary recruiters from across Canada in person. We were excited to have then back in our building. From students asking about scholarships or opportunities to play sports at various universities, it was great to see students excited about the future again! On November 14th, SFHS hosted the ELAA post secondary fair. This fair was represented by the in-province universities and colleges.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Work Experience allows students who have a part time job to earn credits based on the number of hours they work. Hours spent volunteering and hours worked during summer may also be eligible for this program. Worksites are approved, students are evaluated, and a teacher supervises the students’ experience. Students involved in the program can:
Earn high school credits (1 credit for every 25 hours worked, with a minimum 75 hours worked) Acquire the skills and work habits needed to succeed after high school
Credits can be earned in the following courses:
HCS 3000: Workplace Safety Systems (1 CTS credit)
Work Experience 15, 25 and 35 (3 – 10 credits per course)
Career Internship 10 (3 – 5 credits).
Of these credits, a total of 21 (1 CTS and 20 Work Experience) credits can be used toward the 100 credits required for a High School diploma.
REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (RAP)
Is a career in the Trades something you might want to explore? RAP may enable you to gain experience in a trade to see if it is a career possibility for you. These are paid, full time summer positions and enable a student to gain experience and earn credits based on the hours worked. Applications are available on your D2L homepage under “District Academic Programs” and are due in April, however students are encouraged to submit them earlier. This is a competitive application process so students will need to include a cover letter, resume and a teacher recommendation. A valid driver’s license is highly recommended when applying to this program.
OTHER OFF-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS
In partnership with SAIT, Bow Valley College, Olds College, and various trade organizations CCSD offers students the opportunity to pursue post-secondary studies in the areas of Business, Healthcare, Information Technology Agriculture, Veterinary and Trades. Students are encouraged to book an appointment to discuss the wide variety of options after high school. Students may choose to work, upgrade, pursue a trade, take a one year certificate, a two year diploma or pursue an undergraduate degree at a university. There is an option for everyone!

What is Career Planning?
Career planning is a unique life long process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values and personality impact your choice of career direction. You will be making career decisions throughout your life.
Does the Career Centre offer tests and assessments?
The goal of any ‘career test’ is for students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decisions about their first step after high school.
Will the Career Centre find me a job?
We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews and talking about job search skills.
Can I get high school credits for my part-time job or volunteer work?
Yes! See the off campus teacher, Mr. Buckie.
Dual Credit and Exploratory courses or programs are open to students to gain high school and post-secondary credits in specific career areas. Information can be found on D2L under District Academic Programs. It’s a good idea to talk to the Career Practitioner or Off Campus teacher before applying.
GENDER EQUITY MOVEMENT CLUB
The Gender Equity Movement Club is a club that provides a safe space for all genders to meet and discuss issues surrounding gender inequity and gender-based issues in the world. Our goal is to build a community of students who are passionate about gender equality, provide a space for authentic dialogue and educate and empower the student body. So far, the students have had a busy fall start-up, addressing period poverty/stigma in the building as well as building awareness around gender-based violence. The club began an initiative to get free menstrual products into 5 washrooms around the building, which has been met with great success. Additionally, the club organized a presentation on street harassment in our city to inform the student body about the systemic, cultural and intergenerational issue of harassment. This week, students are working on a showcase in the main foyer to bring awareness to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, highlighting that violence exists on a spectrum and can range from harmful words and actions to physical violence and assault. We meet weekly Thursdays at lunch in room B121. New members always welcome!

Our Reach for the Top trivia team is back! After some competitive tryouts in the fall we have a strong team, ready to compete with the smartest schools in Calgary! We have several players returning from our team that performed well in provincials last year, plus some exciting new talent. Stay tuned for results from our matches against other schools, alumni and even our throw-down with the teachers!

The Learning Commons is a designated area for research, study, leisure reading, clubs and a place to connect with friends. It offers a wide selection of books, eBooks, videos, and online resources. A full computer lab which includes internet access and a number of software programs is also available, as is audio visual equipment such as camcorders, digital cameras, LCD projectors are available for students.
