“You may leave St. Marys, but St. Marys will never leave you.”

Live in Awe!

For those of you who always look to the spine of the magazine for our secret message, this is it for Issue 36.

Having published this magazine for 18 years now, I’m in “Awe” of that simple fact. You see, my career has always been (prior to moving to St. Marys)— “start a company, build a company, make it successful, than sell it.” Before St. Marys Magazine, the trend was to turn over a business every two years. I like to create and build, but not usually fond of maintaining. However, the experience of publishing St. Marys Magazine has been totally different. I like to think it’s because I love St. Marys so much, I want to share the wonder of it all with the world. I want others to experience the “awe” that I do every time I walk along the waterfront or visit Cumberland Island.

Awe can never be overrated. And it’s not just an emotional thing—it’s a real neurobiological thing. In fact, Awe, Compassion, Kindness, Joy, Laughter, Playfulness, Light-heartedness, and Wonder don’t simply feel good, they are a recipe for wellbeing and longevity.

Marcus Aurelius said, “Dwell in the beauty of life. Watch the stars and see yourself running with them.”

That, my friends, is “Awe.” Be the little boy or little girl you once were. Find wonder in nature. In life. In others. Everyone has within themselves an eternal child. Children are crammed with marvel. Start seeing things as if for the first time. Imagine your first awesome sunset. Your first sighting of the ocean. Your first scent of honeysuckle. The first time you tasted pizza (or whatever your favorite food is). Now, try to experience all those things as if for the first time. Savor. Really savor the beauty of what is before you.

People often ask me why I’m so happy all the time. People ask me how I’m doing and I most often say, “Never been better.” It’s true because I do stay in awe of life. Remember, the little things are the big things. Live in Awe!
