The Council was incorporated in the State of Illinois, December 27, 1924, for the purpose of advancing research in the social sciences. Nongovernmental and interdisciplinary in nature, the Council appoints committees of scholars which seek to achieve the Council's purpose through the generation of new ideas and the training of scholars.
