he last time I saw her she was in jail. Sitting on the other side of the glass. We talked on a phone while looking at each other through the glass. She was ashamed. She didn't say, but I could tell. She was sorry. I'm not sure she said that either. But I could tell. Her young daughter played outside on the grass with the guy-in-the-garage while inside I struggled to know what the right words to say were. I don't remember much of anything that I said. But I'm sure I would have cherished that visit more. I would have said so much more. I would have done so much more. If I had known that would be the last time. The last opportunity. The last visit. She was on her way to prison many hundreds of miles away. Over the coming months and through many collect phone calls a plan was born, researched and actions were taken that would get the ball rolling. A plan that would reunite us and help her to get her life on track. It's possible those types of plans are easier to imagine oneself following through on when confined in a place such as a women's prison. But the freedom that came with being released caused the plans to go the way of many good intentions. As they say the best laid plans of mice and men. The last communication I had with her was a letter written the day of her release, explaining why she decided the plans we made together were not for her. She needed to live her life her way. Not mine. If only she had. Lived, that is. It's been 10 years this month. The significance of the anniversary might have escaped me but for the news today of someone else taking their own life. Park, a highly competitive and legendary racetrack. With his reputation as a top-notch racer, Petty went on to race on the American team for ISDT competition in 1969, 1970 and 1971. He earned a Silver Medal in 1969 but was plagued by mechanical problems in other outings. It was during one of these European trips that Petty introduced his newly invented plastic fenders. Months later, Petty got a call from British custom motocross builder Eric Cheney raving about the durability and popularity of the fender. With Cheney’s endorsement, the fenders became huge sellers in Europe and soon after in America as well. The idea for the fender came after a ride where the aluminum front fender of Petty’s Maico racer broke off and he drew inspiration from a five-gallon bucket of paint. Utilizing his programming skills in computer machining to fashion a mold, he

that changed the face of motorcycle racing. Petty passed away on Jan. 16. He was 81. Petty was born in Los Angeles on Feb. 19, 1941. He was raised in an affluent and strict Mormon family. His father, a successful attorney, tried to keep the young Petty off motorcycles. Growing up on a hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains, Petty was already one of the top scrambles and off-road racers in Dirtbits continued on next page Southern California by the time he was 16. He became known as a thinking-man’s racer and was uniquely skilled at reading terrain and knowing how to get the most out of his bikes. He earned a solid reputation for winning a lot of races on smaller-displacement machines, against the more popular big bikes of the day. To try to dissuade him from motorcycle racing, Petty’s father sent him to Brigham Young University where the required Sunday church service did not mix with a racing schedule. After leaving BYU and returning to Los Angeles, Petty went headlong into racing. Continued From Previous Page eventually came up with the optimal plastic formula for fenders. In 1972, Petty opened a factory in Oregon and expanded his line of products. During this period, he scaled back his racing efforts to concentrate on his growing business. Business unfortunately took a turn for the worse, as Petty lost it all after the sale of his company on a long-term payout basis flopped when the group that purchased the rights to Petty Plastics went bankrupt in 1980. Petty was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. He will always be remembered for his rare combination of racing skill and technical innovation that helped revolutionize offroad motorcycling.

driven by Wilson and Mangels, “Goldi” driven by Bruce Meyers and “Wheelo” Anderson, and a third car driven by George Haddock and Jimmy Smith. That original number 10 car that won the race in 1967 will be at the 2022 Yokohama Norra Mexican 1000 presented by Method Race Wheels. It will be joined by the Goldi2 tribute car built by John Kieslich, and Doran Dobranszky and a 1965 Meyers Manx named “El Gusano” driven by Jon Steinhilber, and Joe Lowery. Just like NORRA honors the past while forging the future, so does Meyers Manx. The Meyers Manx class will have modern Manx cars racing against each other. Mike Dario, Joe Pierce, and Todd Triebler will be in a 2016 built model (No. 302), and the team of Kory Kratz, Paul Lorenz, and Vincent Parisien will be in a brand new 2021 Meyers Manx Dual Sport Baja Edition (No. 1964). Meyers Manx provides both buggy kits and turnkey cars that cover the full spectrum of performance. From the mighty Subaru powered Dual Sport Baja Edition to the classic Manx Buggy, which is largely unchanged from Bruce’s famous 1960’s design. The company, currently being relaunched with noted automotive designer Freeman Thomas at the helm has a full color and material studio and is able to help customers spec out the buggy of their dreams. Customers are able to go as contemporary or vintage-style as they desire, and the firm has quite a catalog of metalflake paint colors available! One thing will never change; the magical shape that Bruce sculpted in 1964! Bruce Meyers and the Manx have a legacy with NORRA even deeper than their 1967 win; it was Bruce’s record run with Ted Mangels that inspired Ed Pearlman and Don Francisco to start the first sanctioned race in Baja. This played an enormous role in creating the world of off road racing that we’re so in love with today!

What's Happening with the 2022 TDS Desert Safari? T

BY JUSTIN ASHLEY from the TDS FOUR WHEEL DRIVE CLUB FACEBOOK GROUP PAGE

he Families of the Tierra Del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club have had a hard decision again this year about holding the 60th TDS Desert Safari 2022. Everything seems to be working against us this year.

1. OWSVRA permit. They will give us one with the following provisions/requirements: • No modified trails, park map trails only • Environmental control around the event area and along the trails. • Law enforcement, Fire, medical, and park maintenance cost recovery for the start to end of the event 24 hours a day • A $300 fee paid to them per vendor on-site. • Plus a whole other list that adds up. This means the estimated permit expense for just the park is around $48,000 2. OWSVRA is not able to guarantee the park will not be shut down at that time because of Covid. 3. OWSVRA will not allow the event to start if there is a shortage of staffing at start time. We would have to shut down. 4. The logistics of the event headquarters has problems because the vendors can’t promise to have all the materials or equipment when it comes time, because of Covid. With all the price increases headquarters has gone up by almost $30,000 5. Vendors can’t guarantee they would be able to be there. They also can’t guarantee they will have product to help have a monster opportunity drawing like the event is used to. With these key items being so far up in the air we just can’t take the risk. This has lead us to the first time EVER 59 1/2 TDS Desert Safari. We’re saving the 60th for 2023.

There will be our Safari Apparel vendor set up next to the Jack in the Box with all the variety as normal. We will have an opportunity drawing that has tires and other great things in it. Best part you will not have to be present. Tickets will be pulled live on Facebook and posted on our website. We will also call your phone number that day. More details will come on this in future. The apparel store will be opening very soon. Just picking the last of the products now. Look forward to seeing everyone the weekend of March 4-6, 2022 For direct questions please go through the submission section on our website. I have been in and around land-use battles since the 1980s and have served on the BoDs of both Cal4 Wheel and ASA as well as the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission. If there is anything that I have learned, it is that there will always be the next issue. Right now, we are experiencing an explosion in sales growth and use of side-by-sides across the entire OHV spectrum. Any new vehicle type brings with it new management challenges and a new group of OHV enthusiasts. Whether it was the dirt bikes of the 60s or the three wheelers of the 80s, Government became increasingly involved in regulating their sales and use. Land managers across the United States are faced with balancing access and recreation against land stewardship and public safety. The dunes are a haven or heaven for virtually every type of OHV except snowmobiles. And yes, I have seen some of them try the dunes as well. This mix of vehicles is the keystone to the diverse uses at the ISDRA. Air quality and dust have become the issue of the day at

16

Oceano. This issue could come to the ISDRA as well as many other OHV opportunities. There are several facets to the air quality issue: some hover around vehicle emissions and fueling emissions. Campfires also bring a level of concern. The largest air quality issue is dust. Dust is not only a visual reminder of the presence of vehicles in the area, its effects can spread beyond the recreation area. Dust also adds a safety element with low visibility. Funding for the management of our recreation areas, and especially the dunes, constantly needs to be secured and used wisely. Above and beyond the permit fees we pay, part of the registration and gas tax for off-highway vehicles is returned to the management of these areas. This augments the federal dollars allocated by Congress. The more issues that we don’t help solve, the more that will get solved without us. And that is always more costly in both dollars and opportunities. So what do these three things have in common? They are things you can personally help solve! As new visitors and vehicle types come to the dunes, it is incumbent on the longtime visitors to

reach out. A very small amount of information and encouragement from a fellow enthusiast can do far more than blinking red lights. Become a knowledge leader in your camping circle, learn the rules, think safety, respect others, respect the land and respect the land managers. Encourage others to ride not only where it is legal but also provokes less dust. There is a 15 mile an hour speed limit around camps rule for a reason: less dust and more safety. It really is a good idea for anywhere outside the actual dunes. Keep all of your equipment, both towing and duning, in top running order. Use only CARB-compliant refueling devices and minimize the operation of generators. Smoldering campfires are an ignition hazard as well as an air-quality detriment. I see many camps that have turned to propane campfires. Easier than hauling wood, no pesky smoke in your eyes and easy to extinguish. Some of the most direct costs of dunes management are trash and human waste. Keeping a clean organized camp so your stuff doesn’t blow off when you go out for a ride is critical. Don’t encourage wildlife scavenging by leaving food and trash sources available when you’re not in camp. Consider hauling your trash home, your trash can is empty at the house. If you do use the trash bins, be sure the lids will close and never leave trash outside of a secure container. Keep the bathrooms clean, consider bringing your own paper. Yes, these are small things but the BLM is not your maid service and when they are forced to be, it costs a lot of money and leaves a bad impression. Buy your permits and keep your OHV registered. It all helps. Several years ago, the ASA promoted a “checkered flag program” to show its support of the BLM and its law enforcement

efforts at the dunes. This was a highly successful campaign with the duners and well-accepted and appreciated by the BLM. We should re-introduce the program by educating duners about its meaning and values. Volunteer! Whether it’s the dunes cleanup, on an ASA project, or with another OHV organization, volunteerism pays huge dividends in keeping public lands open for public. Think DUST, Act Smart, Be Safe and please come back again! E

any people who off road, and those involved in motorsports are familiar with the old adage “it’s not if you crash, but when." Well that “when” moment happened to UTV team #474 driver Rick Coffman and his co-driver Ben LaBrake on October 16, 2021 at the District 38 Monster Mash race, at Superstition Mountain OHV area. The team was competing in the Sportsman class on this day, but also race in the Production 1000 class in the DP4 series. This stunning aerial moment happened in spectacular fashion, and it was all captured in detail by D38 photographer Judd Neves, who has an eye for where to catch all the action. And he did just that! The team began the day like any other by performing all pre-race safety checks. The guys got to the line, and took off with a strong start. There is no pre-running the course, so the first lap is the riskiest one, as there is much to take in for driver and co-driver alike. The jaw dropping flips happened approx half way thru the first lap. Just as they had passed thru Painted George the power steering went out. They stopped for a quick once over, also checking the KWT prefilter which looked clean. Other than the power steering, the UTV was running well. A little further down the course as they were going along at 60 mph, they found themselves in a perfect storm. They had made a position adjustment and the sun angle shifted, creating shadows that altered their vision. Suddenly, the car hit a kicker. The front end took the impact well, but the back end of the vehicle bucked hard, and there was no time to check the brake. It was at this point Rick said “Everything happened in slow motion, yet ended in seconds.” The car was launched into mid air, and it was rodeo time. The final count was four aerial flips, and they stuck the landing! After a quick occupant check, the team was OKAY!!!

Any and all improvements when it comes to safety are recommended whether you are a professional or an enthusiast. Sure accidents happen, and they were not the only team to have had a battle at the Monster Mash. However, this particular moment garnered a lot of social media attention due to the fact that both occupants walked away with zero injuries, after flipping so violently. The series of pictures were epic from start to finish. Since this is a wide open desert race with 25 mile laps, having a photographer in the right place at the right time in the middle of nowhere to capture the moment, and ultimately be able to confirm the team's well being was fortuitous to say the least. So why were they so fortunate to walk away? Was it luck? Or was it the forethought that was had when building this vehicle? Probably a combo of both, but since luck is not something we can particularly learn from, we will cut to the chase and talk about a few safety aspects of this build. Coffman prepared his UTV with upgraded extras knowing he would be maxing out the vehicle's potential. Here are some suggestions he has now that he has put it all to the test.

One item that Rick advises, is reinforcement of the chassis (vehicle frame). The chassis was tediously gone over with the “when” in mind. Yes, the chassis was damaged in the crash, but the strength in the initial building of it is exactly what contributed to the success of this roll. It did it’s job and took the brutal impact. Rick also emphasized the importance of having the seats reinforced, including upgrading from the plastic base many stock UTVs come with. Another valuable item they had in the car is the Necksgen head and neck restraint system. These provide much needed head and neck support, and hands down saved them from critical injury. Considering the cost of the sport, these suggestions are a minimal investment for the added safety they provided. So what now? Well, in true racing spirit, the show will go on! Rick has been busy filling in as co-driver for some other teams the last few months. He never skipped a beat. The new chassis has been acquired for #474, and he hopes to be back

out there in February. Keep an eye out for them on the desert race courses. What can we take away here? It doesn't matter if you race, or are out riding recreationally, we all share the same desert. The terrain is very unpredictable, and anything can happen in a split second. Those kickers do not discriminate, and nobody wants to get the ugly end of that stick. Any and all improvements when it comes to safety are recommended whether you are a professional or an enthusiast. Build for the moment you hope to never have. Because the “when” can be right around the corner. Quality work matters, you and your occupants matter. Play safe. Shout out to Kingtero Motorsports who fabricated the chassis, and are working hard getting it back on the dirt for Rick and his team to race again. E

outed as "the most beautiful rally in America," the Sand Hollow State Park SXS Adventure Rally is all of that. Sean Reddish knows how to create and perpetuate a fantastic gathering of fanatical off road enthusiasts. The event took place last November 11-13 for the eighth year in a row in Sand Hollow State Park, which is located in St. George, Utah and Zion National Park. The setting is fabulous, the best SXS riding I have ever experienced except for maybe the Rocky Mountain 400. Trained guides assist the groups, which take off each of he three days and tackle the terrain in different degrees of adventure. If you want rocks, OMG!! Rock crawler heaven! If you want

vistas, you can see mountains and valleys of Utah in all of their red rock and sad glory. There is even a lake wish fishing and, of course, Sean feeds you a satisfying breakfast each morning. Add to that, Sean has the factories come each year. Because of covid, it has fluctuated from year to year, but last year, Can Am, Yamaha and Kawasaki each provided about 20 new models for participants to thrash around on a guided ride. In years past Polaris and Honda also provided their newest SXS models to anyone who signed up. After riding all of the different factory machines, your perception of who makes the best SXS for you may change!

Everyone is accommodated. After our scheduled ride, which takes off between 9 and 10 a.m., we generally get back to Party Central early afternoon. If you sign up, the factory reps check your sobriety and you are assigned a new model SXS with all the new trick additions. This alone is worth the price of admission. But Sean's troops are motivated to provide you the best off road experience ever. And they do, as the sand and rock terrain is like a red Glamis and Ocotillo Wells/Truckhaven on steroids! The State Park has free, dry camping, two RV campgrounds, a resort and accommodations for all. All participants get a custom event tee shirt and access to the events. At the headquarters, vendors have their products priced low, so

if you need a new whip antenna, or tires or any off road SXS gear, it is available. Each November, for three years, I have attended and as a special events promoter and a motorsports dealer for 50 years, I can attest that this event, only a seven hour drive from San Diego, is the most fun that you can imagine. Sean is now having a spring event with most of the same elements. Make sure, if you go, to tell Sean that you read about it in S&S Off Road Magazine. And also let Sean know if he EVER wants to do an event in Ocotillo Wells, he will have supporters and participants. E

Oceano Dunes

I

n the ongoing battle at Oceano Dunes, there is a positive step. Friends of Oceano Dunes filed three separate lawsuits after the California Coastal Commission voted to end off-road vehicle use there within three years. One lawsuit is called a Quiet Title suit and alleges that since off-road vehicle use took place there with the land owners knowledge for more than five years in the distant past, it should be allowed to continue. The Coastal Commission made a motion for the suit to be thrown out, which was just denied by the judge. The suit will continue to trial.

CARB

The California Air Resources Board is now tightening the standards for on road motorcycles. This affects dual sport and adventure motorcycles. They are looking at adopting standards like the very strict Euro 5 standards. They are even proposing to add more sensors to OBD systems (on board diagnostic) and requiring catalyzers. Manufacturers are concerned that the new standards

will require extensive engineering that cannot be implemented in the timeline that they propose. They strongly prefer that standards adopted should be identical to Euro 5, so they would not need to make different models of the same bikes. They have a comment period open until February 7th. See what they have in mind at https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/2022-01/ONMC%20 Workshop%201_12_22.pdf

Riverside OHV Park

For years I have seen Riverside County apply for OHV grants to build a new park in Riverside County. They have recently made significant progress and have six proposed sites they are looking at. Off road motorcycle racing legend, Scott Harden is helping with the project. The county is accepting comments in their feasibility study and you can see where the proposed sites are and comment on them at https://ktuagis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index. html?appid=24ffbeb8031c46648cc26f54db00d7db

Cleanups

SDORC, along with our partner the ASA and CORVA put on a very successful cleanup at the Imperial Sand Dunes. There were four stations at each corner of the dunes and a lot of trash was picked up. I would like to thank Audrey Mason and Bryan Henry for doing a lot of the heavy lifting on the event. Next, Friends of Ocotillo Wells will be hosting a cleanup at Ocotillo Wells February 19 at the event center on Main Street. Check in around 9:00 a.m. and come back around lunch time for food and prizes. February 26th SDORC and SDMUST will be hosting a cleanup at Painted Gorge. This is one of my favorite areas and deserves some attention. There is often shooting and off-roading trash left there and it is up to us to keep the area respectable. Look for the dumpster a couple miles down Painted Gorge Rd where we will have check-in from 56

State Parks Video

California State Parks asked for some help in making an OHV video recently. After determining it would not be a hit piece, I agreed to help. I was able to take a Tuesday off work and invite some friends out to Ocotillo Wells to shoot the video. It was a long, but fun day, starting before dawn and ending at dusk. I look forward to seeing what they get and if any of the GoPro video came out (they put one on me and said go nuts). We have been offered a space at TDS Safari this March 5th, so look for us, I believe in Salton City, for a fun day in the desert.

Mountain Dash

SDORC is co-hosting a dual sport motorcycle event called Mountain Dash with the San Diego Adventure Riders. We are looking at May 15th with a start in Escondido and finish at Pio Pico Campground by Otay Mountain. Expect both street and dirt sections with total distance of about 150 miles. The dirt sections are not too difficult and any type of motorcycle is welcome, although dual sport and adventure bikes will be best. Signup will open soon at https://dualsport-sd.com/

Radio Show

We still have our weekly radio show on AM 1170 and FM 92.1 at noon on Sundays. Sometimes we call in from the desert or race track, but we are always on. We would love some new advertisers, so hit us up, it is reasonable and after the shows, www.ssormag.com - FEBRUARY 2022 - S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE

Bike Shop

S

portbike or cruiser?" said the salesman as I walked in the motorcycle dealership with helmet and jacket in hand. There is another option that has become socially acceptable in recent years. Adventure bikes are capable, comfortable and cool to own and ride. Whether you are heading to a coffee shop or the Arctic Circle, no one in our world will knock an adventure bike. They are good bikes to ride, with big, powerful engines, comfortable ergos, can carry gear and travel bad roads. I love them and own one (V Strom). I also ride dual sport street legal dirt bikes. Both of these types of bikes fill holes in the puzzle of "What kind of bike should I get?" There is a hole that as of now, remains unfilled. That is the rally-style traveling dual sport dirt bike. With the Dakar Rally raging on the other side of the world as I write this, I would like to talk about a bike I would love to own. I like the big adventure bikes, but they are too heavy for real dirt riding. I love dual sports, but they are too light for long road rides (With my 2020 FE501, Husqvarna recommends a new crank at 160 hours). There are bikes that come close, like the Yamaha Tenere 700, Kawasaki KLR650, KTM 690, Honda XR650L, CRF300L Rally and Suzuki DR650 (I own a DR650

By Clutch Roberts

with 50,000 miles I've ridden so far). The Tenere and KLR are still too heavy for real dirt riding, the 690, DR and XR are closer, but underprepared and the CRF300L is too small for highway use. What I want is a single cylinder bike around 600cc with a wide power band, peaking with at least 50 hp, dry weight not exceeding 320lbs, carries at least five gallons of fuel, has a rally style frame-mounted fairing with a navigation system inside, three per side welded on luggage rack points, an engine that can take a lot of miles, a six speed transmission, with 1st-4th gears close together for dirt riding and taller 5th and 6th gears for highway cruising, either 17 or 18 inch rear wheel, 21 inch front wheel, around 10 inches of wheel travel and with a comfortable seat. Suspension springs and damping should be tuned for moderately hard dirt riding. Not essential, but still desirable would include a skid plate, hand guards, big foot pegs, behind the seat rack, folding mirrors, front and rear separate switchable ABS, easy access air filter and mounting points for an optional center stand. Would be nice if the fairing and nav system would easily unbolt and unplug, to be replaced by a plastic number plate for dirt riding. The tail light and turn signals should be on a bracket that unplugs and unbolts as well. It would be great if a low version was also available with seven inches of wheel travel and a differently shaped seat. A bike like this could actually go dirt bike riding, carry a commuter to work and be the cornerstone of a multiweek traveling vacation. The KTM 690 is close, but needs a bigger fuel tank and a lower price. The KLR is a known world traveler, but is pretty heavy and not very dirt worthy. Every bike that is close, is also deficient in ways that are hard to fix. I would like all this for under $10k. If any manufacturers want help with design and specifications for such a bike, we are here for you. Reach me at 858 822 8274. "Sportbike or cruiser?" That day I was on a dual sport, but I would love to have said rally bike. E

Redundancy Makes Sense Off Road

nyone old enough to remember the Apollo space program may recall hearing the term redundancy. Back then, NASA was referring to extra electronics or other systems in the space capsule and lunar module. Today’s commercial aircraft also employ a certain amount of redundancy. In either case, the principle is the same: Should the main system fail, the crew could turn to backup technology to ensure a successful mission or flight. `Four-wheelers may never leave the ground (at least not intentionally), but they can face glitches and breakdowns. Redundancy in gear and planning can help ensure most any problem is resolved quickly.

What is redundancy in four-wheeling?

A primary component entails looking ahead: trying to foresee what could happen and account for it. It’s not just about duplicating gear or equipment. You also want backup plans and contingencies. As for gear, redundancy can mean duplication, as well as packing items that offer similar functionality but perhaps not as These bags store well underneath the shelf. They are convenient (e.g. a can opener and a military P38). Tires: Tires are the primary cause of issues while four-wheeling. The main backup, of course, is the spare tire. A functional backup would be a tire plug kit. In fact, I always recommend trying to repair a tire first. Save the spare tire for extreme cases. Valuable and compact, a tire plug kit belongs in every four-wheeling vehicle. Gear: This list can be long, so I’ll focus on a few items to get you thinking about this concept. Oftentimes gear can be used beyond its intended function. A good example is the handle on a Hi-Lift jack. You can slide it under a breaker bar for more leverage. I once used a Hi-Lift handle to reinforce a bent tie rod. Need an adhesive? J-B Weld, a cold epoxy, handles many tasks. But even duct tape and electrical tape can get you out of many problems. For tying down gear and boxes, straps, ropes, and bungee cords are nearly interchangeable. If you pack

only one of these, consider adding another for a layer of redundancy and peace of mind. Being able to start a fire is critical. In addition to cooking food and offering a soothing ambiance, a fire could save you if you’re lost. Many people carry a butane lighter. A good alternative is matches in a waterproof box. You can also start a fire with AA batteries and steel wool. A third back up is flint and steel. A good example is a product called Light My Fire (https://lightmyfire.com). As for kindling, a good backup are “fire balls.” Those are cotton balls swabbed in petroleum jelly. Great for getting a fire going. Communication: The ability to communicate outside the campsite or trail is crucial. Cell phones, being so common, are the go-to method of communicating. Problem is, cell coverage can be spotty Tie rod reinforced with Hi-lift handle or nonexistent while off road. Trail Redundancy exists at home as well Good forms of backup This can take many forms. It just depends on what you’d like communication include ham radio and satellite phones. to account for. Navigation: A GPS receiver is handy, but pack a map or Take tires, for example. I really can’t afford to deal with tire other written format as well. The GPS device could get broken or otherwise fail. Printed information will always be available, unless replacement delays. Therefore, I own a sixth spare tire for my main vehicle. Yes, that’s an additional tire beyond the one on the you spill coffee on it. Go a step further with all your information vehicle. and instruction manuals by storing a pdf on a digital device you If I’m forced to use the main spare while off-road, I can slap carry with you – laptop, notebook, thumb drive, etc. on the replacement tire immediately upon returning home. I love the expediency the additional tire offers. I’m not subject to supply Redundancy in planning chain delays before my next trip. Have a plan B. As you see, incorporating redundancy in your vehicle and Often thought of as contingencies, redundancies in planning life offers many advantages. In addition to quickly resolving a allow you to react to unforeseen issues. Let’s say you encounter a washed-out trail or road. If you had problem, the extra gear or part provides an added measure of convenience and peace of mind. selected an alternative in advance, you could try that path now. Otherwise, your trip could be in jeopardy. Similarly, have an alternate campground in mind should the one you’re planning to stay at is full. It’s also good to know which gas station(s) and hospital will be close while on the trail. Record that information and share with others in your group. Bear in mind that the closest hospital (or clinic) and gas station can change during a long trip.

f you are one of those off-roaders who likes to use the trails and go offroading but not participate in different club/organization fund raising events, I challenge you to start NOW! As an off roader, we need to support those clubs and organizations that protect our rights to off-road, advocate to keep trails open, help start new trails and neighborhood OHV parks. We need to support those who are fighting for our right, to off-road. San Diego Off Road Coalition is one of those organizations. SDORC works with elected representatives, land

managers, government agencies and interested individuals to promote a safe and responsible off-roading experience. They collaborate with local community planning groups, county and state officials, and other Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) organizations like CORVA and Cal4Wheel to create new OHV recreation areas and they raise funds to pay for lobbyists to fight for us in Sacramento. What is the best way for an off-road organization to raise funds? Host an off-road event, of course! This past November was the 16th Annual Lost Lizard Off-Road Fun Run

hosted by SDORC in the Superstition Mountains OHV area in Imperial County, CA. The people that put this event together belong to different clubs and SDORC is an all-volunteer organization. No one gets paid to help put this event together which takes a year of planning, organizing, getting sponsors, permits, etc. If you have never participated in a Lost Lizard Fun Run, you are missing out! This is one of my favorite annual events! The Lost Lizard Fun Run is a five checkpoint, poker run at your own pace, CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

trail cleanup, covering over 25 miles of the Superstition Mountains. The event starts off at headquarters which is at Mile Marker 6 off Wheeler Road. You must register for the event and wear a wristband to show that you are part of the event. At registration you will receive a poker/game card which includes the checkpoints and a map of the fun run. This is a go-at-your-own-pace style run. Each checkpoint is hosted by either an off-road club or different entities that support off-roading. As participants navigate through the Superstition Mountain to reach the different checkpoints, (GPS coordinates are also listed on the poker/ game card), they are also looking for trash and debris because there are special prizes for whomever brings back the most trash, biggest piece of trash, etc. Each checkpoint has different games for participants to play for a chance at winning raffle tickets and this is where the participants also draw their poker hands, which are then stamped on their card. At the end of the evening, just before the raffle, participants are asked to review their poker hands to see who has the best hand and wins a prize! After the poker hands, now you can see what you can score during the raffle! Besides winning raffle tickets at the checkpoints from playing the games, you can also purchase additional raffle tickets at Headquarters up until about 30 minutes prior to the raffle start. The members of the SDORC Lost Lizard committee do an amazing job at collecting raffle prizes and getting donations for this event! Covid has been rough for many vendors since their inventory has been slow or hard to receive. Some of the vendor sponsors who usually donate items for the raffle, still participated by giving a cash donation so the Lost Lizard committee could purchase prizes for the raffle. This year the main sponsor, the "Lizards Ace" was the Imperial Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership off Highway 86 in Imperial, CA. This is the only local Jeep dealership in Imperial County. IV Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is under new ownership. The new owners are looking to be the "Go To" and an “off-road friendly” dealership! If you brake on trail, they want to be the dealership you go to for parts. When you need service on your off-road vehicle, you take your vehicle CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Perseverance was the name of the game for #T924 in the Class U Turbo class, including driver of record Garrick Lastra along with Randy Raschein and Robert Villareal. “We started the weekend with qualifying. We weren’t planning on attending qualifying but we did and ended up getting first. Day of the race we started off great and just before pit one we blew a belt. First belt we broke in years. Once we got going again we were making up ground while battling the cars that passed us when we were down. Just before pit three we snapped an axle CV spline and lost the castle nut that holds the hub and axle together. We were down for over an hour without a replacement part. Finally a Legacy official picked up parts from

us that we got from fellow Can Am teammate Cory Sappington and drove back to our car and got repaired. At this time we were the last car on course and got going again. We made it all the way back to pit five and had the same piece come apart again. We weren’t done yet! We wanted to finish because we’re in it for the season. The crew got the car going again and we made it to the finish, ending our day at the finish line in 5th place in class. We want to thank our sponsors: Riverland Racing, Lonestar Racing, Can Am, Tensor Tires, Method Wheels, King Shocks, Evolution Powersports and Modquad. Also want to thank Randy and Carolyn Raschein for having me as driver of record on the team.”

Craig McIntosh and co-driver Lester Jukes with Desert Vets Racing running in the UTV Stock Mod S900 class. "My Coast Guard Vet and me moving along and having fun across the Nevada desert. We had issues and did not finish, but I know Lester (Coast Guard) will never forget the whole experience. Thanks to our sponsors and DVR we are able to get our Nation's Vets out racing."
