Feature story

UL/WLA Hybrid Reproduction

In 1942, Harley-Davidson® made 462 U model motorcycles, 41 of which were slated for the U.S. Army. Harley-Davidson also produced 426 Sidecar versions for the U.S. Army, and these U Models w/ sidecar ironically were USA models. Since only the U.S. Military can make the great American icon more American, S&S® decided to do a military motorcycle for the 2012 Flathead Power® road tour. Long time S&S employee, Bonneville record holder and military vehicle enthusiast, Dan Kinsey jumped at the chance to work on this project. Since the majority of our flathead parts are for the big twin flatties, the bike would have to be a replica of one of these rare 1942 models. Diving into the historical archives and internet pages filled with nose cone art and pin-up babes, very little on the U.S. Army U models could be found. Not wanting to give up on the project, we did the next best thing, duplicate what we knew of the 45" WLA models to create our own WLA/U model hybrid. Some initial parts and a wealth of knowledge from our friends at WayBack Wheels got us well on our way. Dan went to work stripping down the “F-bobb” (an S&S built U model flathead bobber style motorcycle) bike and repainting it in olive drab green. Starting with cut down fenders, Dan created some parts from scratch and retro fitted other WLA model parts. Given that the WLA 45" engines used a three-bolt inlet flange on their smaller carb, we had to generate a 3D model and a rapid prototype of the air inlet casting for the oil bath intake system. Our version has the U model four-bolt carb flange and with S&S being S&S, we just couldn’t resist adding the patented stinger to the intake. Jumping in on the replica rage, Marketing Director Gary Wenzel went so far as ordering a replica Tommy gun to fill the empty scabbard. The designation lettering is even unique to Flathead Power and S&S. On the rear fender, the division designation uses the S&S founding year, 1958, in the call out AGF-58C (Army Ground Forces, 58th Calvary) and the vehicle designation; FHP 1 of course! After three months of hard work and research, the 2012 Flathead Power display and pit bike is complete. This bike features Flathead Power heads, 80" cylinders, pistons, solid lifters and kicker cover. But this bike isn’t just for display – we’ve set it up with a foot shift and a hand clutch so our show staff can easily tool around the show grounds.

There is no difference in performance between S&S® chrome mufflers and header pipes, and those with black Jet-Hot® ceramic coating. This chart from the Dynojet® 250i chassis dynamometer shows a 2007 HarleyDavidson® FLT with an S&S 106" Big Bore kit and 585 cams. The lower (less powerful) set of curves show results with a stock set of header pipes. The top curves represent the same bike but with S&S Power Tune Duals header pipes. We gained over 8 horsepower, and got an additional 4 ft/lb of torque across the rpm range. This engine was tuned with the Dynojet® Power Vision® tuner.

The manifold end of the 70mm Throttle Hog features oval shaped ports, which are specifically designed to mate up with the oval ports of S&S B2 Special Application cylinder heads. 70mm Throttle Hog manifold runners are sized to fit an S&S 145" engine. Scribe lines on the runners mark how far they must be shortened to fit S&S 126" or 124"engines.

This dyno chart compares the power produced with the S&S Throttle Hog 58mm throttle to a stock 50mm throttle body. Both runs were done on the same 2009 FLHT equipped with the complete S&S 4-Step Performance Program: S&S Power Tune Dual headers with S&S Power-Tour slip-on mufflers, S&S Super Stock™ Stealth air cleaner kit with wide filter, S&S 585 chain drive cams, S&S 106" Big Bore Kit, and stock heads CNC ported by S&S. Up to about 4700 rpm, the curves are nearly identical. That’s where the extra air supplied by the 58mm Throttle Hog extends the usable power band and allows the engine to make 7.9 more horsepower. Consider the S&S Throttle Hog to be Step 41/2.

Will a throttle body that's bigger than needed hurt you? The answer is no. So buy a throttle body big enough for all the engine modifications you plan on…even if you haven't done them yet! This chart compares airflow of a stock throttle body to the S&S Throttle Hogs. Tests were performed on a SuperFlow 1020 flow bench at 28 inches of water test pressure. Throttle bodies were tested with backplates only, no air filter or air cleaner cover. It's easy to see the difference. More air, more power.

S&S® Cycle, Incorporated warrants the S&S components of your S&S Throttle Hog throttle body to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase by the original consumer customer. If parts become defective during the warranty coverage period, S&S will, at its option, repair or replace any, or all, defective parts. Repair or replacement of defective parts is the sole and exclusive remedy. In the event that any OEM component re-utilized in the assembly of the throttle body fails, S&S may service the unit provided the OEM components are supplied to S&S at the time of service.

This dyno chart shows the increase in torque and horsepower available from a 106" Big Bore Kit. In stock trim, the 2007 Harley-Davidson® FLSTF made a respectable 65 horsepower and 85 ft/lb of torque at the stock displacement of 96". The same bike with the 106" Big Bore Kit, S&S 585 cams, and S&S mufflers made 98 horsepower and an incredible 110 ft/lb of torque. All that power without splitting the cases!

now with four fuel delivery ports! The Super Shorty E & G carbs were first introduced over 20 years ago, and since have become the world's most popular performance carb for v-twin motorcycles. We're still working to make them better! The latest improvement in the new generation of Shorty carbs is a minor tweak of the intermediate fuel delivery. Our research to create emissions compliant carbs for our OE customers paid off with an unexpected performance improvement, which we have incorporated into our regular line of carbs. Previous E & G carbs have three fuel delivery ports above the throttle plate, but the new design has four. The benefit is better throttle response, and a smoother transition from the low/intermediate system to the main jet. In addition, we added an o-ring seal around the idle mixture screw to eliminate the possibility of air leakage and to help prevent the screw from vibrating out of adjustment. All current production Super E & G carburetors, serial number N02188 and later have these new features. An easy way to identify a new carb with four fuel delivery holes is the “Made In USA” on top of the carb body right below the word “SHORTY.”

Fitment

As the throttle plate opens, it exposes more of these holes to engine vacuum and delivers more fuel as rpm increases. When you run out of holes in the intermediate system, the main jet comes in and handles fuel delivery for the higher rpm.

Limited Edition! Only 25 Will Be Made! The Anders Nygren Signature series engines pay tribute to the founder of the original Flathead Power company, Anders Nygren. Anders started Flathead Power in Sweden in the early 1990s mainly to provide impossible to find parts for his own vintage race bikes. His accomplishments as an engine builder and engineer were nothing short of amazing as he, for the most part, single handedly built his fledgling business into an internationally known source for vintage reproduction parts for restoration and retro custom motorcycles. Unfortunately Flathead Power fell victim to a turbulent economy. Rather than allow Flathead Power to fade away, S&S Cycle purchased the company name and assets in 2007. Since then, S&S has worked hard to bring the name back to life, but we haven't forgotten the man who got it all started.

These cylinders come fully machined with guides installed and valve seats cut and lapped on our precision CNC equipment. The finished cylinders are then given a rich coat of high temperature black powdercoat. Authentic to the closest detail, the cylinder set comes with valves, springs and gaskets – ready to assemble! Or get the kit, which includes everything in the set, plus cast pistons fit to factory specifications. We’ve even made improvements to the original design while remaining true to the retro look. Step 2: cams and pushrods What kind of power do you need? Want more mid-range torque? Looking for top end power? S&S offers a wide selection of camshaft profiles — from bolt-in performance to high lift radical power, we have what you need to go from mild to wild!

Step 3: Big Bore Kits We’re talking up to 24 horsepower over stock* by increasing the displacement of your engine. The S&S 97" and 106" Big Bore kits give bolt-on performance that doesn’t have to cost a lot. This is a serious increase for the power enthusiast!

Step 4: CNC Ported Heads With CNC ported heads, you can realize up to 40 horsepower over stock*. S&S has developed a high flowing port design that will alter the way your heads perform. S&S includes a valve spring upgrade with every CNC ported service.
