Met Erna Ómarsdóttir heeft Julidans dit jaar de bekendste IJslandse choreografe te gast. Samen met de Belgische choreograaf Damien Jalet maakte ze Black Marrow, een voorstelling over het “zwarte merg” of het “zwarte goud”: de aardolie die door de aderen van onze geïndustrialiseerde wereld pompt. Is het door de goden gezonden nectar of een duivelse drek? Welke onomkeerbare invloed heeft het op ons en op de wereld om ons heen? Hoe verslaafd zijn we er inmiddels aan? En hoe beïnvloedt het de spirituele band tussen mens en natuur?

De mythologische thematiek zal niets verbazen met een choreografe wier wieg in het vulkanische IJsland stond. Het vertellen van magische, surrealistische verhalen zit Erna Ómarsdóttir in het bloed. De dans wordt voortgestuwd door het ritme en de spookachtige elektronische sounds van de bekende Australische experimentele muziekproducer Ben Frost, die zorgen voor maximale extase.

With Erna Ómarsdóttir, Julidans is proud to have Iceland’s most renowned choreographer as a guest this year. Together with Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet, she created Black Marrow, a performance about ‘Black marrow’ or ‘Black gold’: the earth oil that courses through the veins of our industrialised world. Is it the nectar of the gods or is it the devil’s elixir? What kind of irreversible influence does it have on us and the world around us? How addicted to it are we by now? And how does it influence the spiritual bond between man and nature? These mythical themes are none too surprising when you have a choreographer who was raised on the vulcanoes of Iceland. Telling magical, surrealistic stories is in Erna Ómarsdóttir’s blood. The dance is driven by the rhythm and ghostly electronic sounds of the well-known Australian experimental music composer Ben Frost and succeeds in creating the maximum level of ecstasy. “It was as if I had landed in a David Lynch film!”, is how one audience member described the first version of the show in 2009 that Ómarsdóttir and Jalet created for the Australian company, Chunky Move. That collaboration caused so many fireworks that Ómarsdóttir proposed to Jalet to do a retake when she became artistic leader of the Iceland Dance Company. The idea appealed to Jalet (formerly Les Ballets C de la B, among others). He calls their collaboration an “organic artistic fusion”. His career is marked by many such collaborations; in May 2013, he created a new version of Ravel’s Boléro for the ballet of the Paris Opera, together with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and the legendary performance artist Marina Abramović.

Die samenwerking leverde zoveel vuurwerk op dat Ómarsdóttir Jalet voorstelde het stuk te hernemen zodra ze artistiek leider werd van de Iceland Dance Company. Dat idee viel bij Jalet (voorheen o.a. Les Ballets C de la B), meteen in goede aarde. Hij noemt hun ontmoeting een “organische artistieke fusie”. Zijn carrière bevat veel bijzondere ontmoetingen; zo maakte hij in mei 2013 een nieuwe versie van Ravel’s Boléro voor het ballet van de Parijse Opéra, samen met Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui en de legendarische performance kunstenaar Marina Abramović. Ómarsdóttir werkte onder andere met Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Jan Fabre en Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en heeft haar eigen groep Shalala. Het Duitse magazine Ballettanz verkoos haar al een paar keer tot de opwindendste Europese choreografe. Vanuit heel Europa zijn de ogen daarom nu op de Iceland Dance Company gericht.

Ómarsdóttir worked with, among others, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Jan Fabre and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and has her own group called Shalala. The German magazine Ballettanz has already named her as the most exciting European choreographer twice. That is why currently all of Europe is focused on the Iceland Dance Company.
