Mayor Nutter holds a special place in his heart for John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School. That could be because his mother and aunt are Hallahan graduates. After seeing the girls walking back to school after attending Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, he instructed his driver to stop by the school. This is not the first time that he has visited Hallahan and met with the students. Pictured at the left are Principal, Ms. Mary E. Kirby, Mayor Nutter, President, Mrs. Sandra R. Young and School Minister, Rev. Stephen Paolino.

A Message from Hallahan’s President Dear Alumnae and Friends of Hallahan,

It was quite humbling when I received the call from Mary Rochford telling me that Cardinal Rigali was appointing me President of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School. I was excited to be given the opportunity to head the first archdiocesan all girls’ Catholic high school in the United States. I take on this new position with excitement and enthusiasm, and I look forward to working with the alumnae, administration, faculty and staff of Hallahan. I come to Hallahan after spending twelve years in Catholic education as both a theology teacher and Assistant Principal at Bishop Shanahan and Conwell-Egan High Schools. I attended Holy Family College for my undergraduate degree and St. Joseph’s University for post-graduate studies, earning a Master’s Degree in Education and an Instructional Technology Certificate. Since September, I have had numerous opportunities to meet many women who have walked the “Hallowed Halls of Hallahan” and to learn how Hallahan is an integral part of their life stories. I am looking forward to celebrating the 110th anniversary of the Alumnae Association this upcoming school year with events going on throughout the year. This past fall, the main hallways and stairwells of the Hallahan building were painted; the intention is to have the Cathedral building painted this summer. A chandelier donated by Friends of Mazzi Ward ’72 in her memory will light the main hall, and a circular rug embossed with the school seal, donated by Matriz, will welcome the visitor at the Wood Street entrance. We are currently working on installing lighting and flags around the outside of the building to ensure that anyone visiting Center City Philadelphia knows that we are here and thriving. To see the latest happenings at Hallahan; alumnae upcoming events, the New Jersey shore alumnae page, current parent newsletter, and plans for the 110th anniversary celebrations, visit us on the web at www.jwhallahan.org. Sincerely,

Sandra R. Young President

A Message from Hallahan’s Past President Dear Hallahan Alumnae and Friends of Hallahan, After six wonderful years of serving as the President of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School, I decided to retire in August, 2010. Based on the current status of the school, this was the optimum time for me to make this decision. On a personal note, I did desire to have more time to devote to traveling, serving my parish and greater community, consulting and enjoying my family, who have endlessly supported my tenure over these past years. It is truly impossible to put into words the gratitude I feel for having had the opportunity to serve as the President of the oldest diocesan high school for women in the United States. As the daughter of a working class family, I believe that I was blessed to lead a school which was founded to educate women with whom I have shared a very special legacy. God works in mysterious ways, and I never doubted that God directed me to Hallahan and continued to direct my actions as I served this most wonderful community. Thank you for your continued generosity and warm welcomes as I had the great experience to dialogue with all of you through both written and personal communication. Your notes of encouragement, your kind personal words to me, coupled with your endless financial support of Hallahan, made my work a true pleasure. You allowed me to lead the first and very successful Capital Campaign, provide funds for innovative academic programs, increase financial aid to needy students, add five state-of-the-art computer labs, renovate the cafeteria, replace the lockers and desks, add LCD projectors and smart boards in all rooms, renovate science labs, rest rooms and offices. That is just to name some of the accomplishments that were implemented with your help. For all of this and much more, I am extremely grateful. I again thank you for six grand years. Please remember that you will always remain in my heart and in my prayers. I also hope to see you at special events in the future. Hallahan will always be a most special place for me, because of you. May God bless you. Sincerely,

Margaret A. Gallagher Margaret A. Gallagher

Margaret Pelullo Goldschmidt ‘77 (left), Rosalie Ghilardi Mirenda ‘55 (center) and Denise DeSumma Kassekert ‘69 (right) at the Distinguished Graduates Award Dinner sponsored by the Archdiocese.

Dr. Mirenda not only earns honors for Newmann University, but she is the recipient of many other awards for her contributions in education, the field of nursing, and her community at large. Most recently, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia honored Dr. Mirenda by inducting her into the Archdiocesan Hall of Fame. The Hallahan community is honored to have Dr. Mirenda as a proud member of our sisterhood, and we congratulate her for her numerous achievements and her steadfast commitment to Catholic education and community.

Article written by Madeline Lubbert ‘11 Dr. Rosalie Mirenda hasn’t always been a “Distinguished Graduate.” In fact, she came from humble beginnings: Dr. Mirenda was born to poor Italian immigrants to whom Catholic values of faith and love took precedence. Her Catholic education began early, in Philadelphia’s St. Paul School, and continued at John W. Hallahan Catholic High School for Girls, graduating in 1955. It seems Dr. Mirenda had the foundation for her devotion to knowledge and Catholic education laid at these local institutions. From Hallahan, Dr. Mirenda moved on to Villanova University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree for nursing. But her pursuit of knowledge did not end there: Dr. Mirenda earned her Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1973, Dr. Mirenda began her work at Neumann University as a nursing instructor, beginning a career at the university that would span almost Hallahan and Roman students helped out at the Archdiocesan four decades to date. At Neumann, Dr. Mirenda be- Distinguished Graduates Awards Dinner. came the dean of the nursing division and later the vice president for academic affairs before becoming the president of the University in 1996. As president of Neumann University, Dr. Mirenda has accomplished so much: enrollment has tripled, campus acreage has expanded by almost five times, new programs have been added, and the school earned university status. Dr. Mirenda is hailed by the school community for her integrity and commitment to the Franciscan Catholic education that Neumann University has pledged to provide for its students. It is safe to say that without Dr. Mirenda’s work at the university, this once small college could not have achieved such a status as a small college in the Philadelphia area. HALLAHAN PRIDE - Each school is asked to supply two centerpieces for the Distinguished Graduates Award Dinner. 4

A Message from the Institutional Advancement Office Dear Hallahan Alumnae and Friends,

I would like to personally say good bye to Mrs. Margaret A. Gallagher who has been the President of Hallahan for the past six years. Nan may not have been a Hallahan graduate but the alumnae, students and the up keep of Hallahan were always first on her mind. It was a pleasure to have worked with her. I would also like to welcome Mrs. Sandra R. Young as our new President. She has been in this position for almost a year and I can say that she is working hard to keep Hallahan in the limelight. I am looking forward to working with Sandra as we go forward in keeping Hallahan flourishing. In September of this year I had a knee replacement and was out of work for a couple of months and feel that I have never caught up. The 2009/2010 Annual Report which is very late, follows in the next few pages. I thank all those donors both alumnae and Friends of Hallahan for their generosity. So please remember that if you made a donation to the 2010/2011 Annual Fund, this will be reflected in the FOOTPRINTS that will be published in November, 2011. This upcoming school year is going to be an exciting one as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the School building. Both the School and the Alumnae Association have special events scheduled to celebrate this milestone.. These events are listed in this edition of FOOTPRINTS and will be on the website. Make sure to check them out and I look forward to meeting a lot of you at least one of these events. Sincerely,

Marge West Kiefski ‘66 Director

We have been in or attended each other’s weddings; celebrated births; stood as Godmother for each other’s children; shared and continue to share the joys and sorrows of those children; shared proudly each others accomplishments and wept together in times of shattering loss. Through our Sorority Picnic, held each summer since 1960, our children and their families have become close friends.

Dear Editor:

When I joined the Hallahan Glee Club in 1948 as a 9th grader at St. Peter’s Annex, I had no idea that step would bring me a group of life long friends. But high school friends can get lost after graduation; so, in our first year out of school, we decided to form a “Sorority”, meeting once a month. Over the following fifteen years, we added a Class of ‘50 Hallahanite and three other non-Hallahan 32

Over the years, we have traveled to the mountains and seashore together with our spouses and began in 2003 celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary events together. The Sorority “girls” took a cruise to celebrate our 65th birthday; did a theater weekend-away when we turned 70 and marked our 75th with a trip to Cape Cod. We can still sing pretty well, and once each year at our spring meeting you can hear those voices coming from a Sea Isle deck on 79th Street, harmonizing some “oldies...but always, always ending with “Let a flood tide of song from our hearts pour along, oh girls of the Hallahan High…”. THANK YOU, HALLAHAN! Anna (Nancy) Guinan Hipp, Class of 1952

All across the United States there are minigroups of Hallahan alumnae that regularly gather to share fond memories of those bygone years. One such newly discovered nucleus of Hallahan grads was discovered recently in the Manor of St. Mary’s in Cherry Hill, NJ, where Admission Coordinator Denise Kues counted eight residents who attended the first archdiocesan high school for girls in the country. A first-time reunion was planned for November 30 with the help of Marge Kiefski and a few other active Hallahan alumnae from New Jersey: Dolores Delahunty Hamilton ’48, Pat Glancy Ubaldi ’48, and Peg Callahan Dorsey ’46. On their arrival they were greeted at the door by seven Manor residents who welcomed their alumnae with pride and joy. Marge presented each with a poinsettia and a Hallahan magnet. In their turn, the residents took them on a tour of the Manor, and then to the dining room where they had a reunion luncheon.

Lively conversation at the table abounded in memories of Hallahan which revealed how strong these alumnae’s connections are to their school.

Hallahan Alums and Hallahan residents at the Manor of St. Mary’s share lunch together in St. Mary’s Cafeteria.
