COMPLIANCE GUIDELINES FOR NU BOOSTERS The University of Nebraska Athletic Department takes great pride in abiding by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Big Ten Conference rules and guidelines that govern Division I competition. For the benefit of the many alumni, fans and booster club members who are so active in supporting and assisting the Huskers throughout the year, we would like to remind everyone of a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic representatives and boosters.

NCAA PRINCIPLES

Institutional Control It is the responsibility of the University of Nebraska to control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Responsibility The University of Nebraska’s responsibility for the conduct of its program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual, booster or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletic interests of the institution. Compliance The University of Nebraska must monitor its program to assure compliance and to identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved. An institution found to have violated NCAA rules is subject to disciplinary and corrective actions as determined by the NCAA.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR FANS, BOOSTERS, ALUMNI AND REPRESENTATIVES OF ATHLETIC INTERESTS Definitions Q: What is a booster? A: Someone who belongs to a University of Nebraska athletic booster club; promotes or makes financial donations to the athletic department or a specific Husker team; assists in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes; employs, gives benefits to, or provides services to a student-athlete, a prospective student-athlete or the relative/friends of either. REPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETIC INTEREST (I.E. BOOSTERS), NCAA BYLAW 13

Q: Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete? A: A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools and junior colleges as well as students who have officially withdrawn from a four-year institution and plan to transfer to another institution. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution or a Nebraska booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. A good rule of thumb is to treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects.

him/her for signing a National Letter of Intent to attend Nebraska; giving anything of value to a prospect to induce him/her to attend Nebraska; contact of any kind while the prospect is on the Nebraska campus for an official or unofficial visit. RECRUITING CONTACTS, NCAA BYLAW 13 Q: What are the rules of employment for a student-athlete? A: A student-athlete may be employed during the academic year or summer vacation period; receive compensation equal to the going rate for similar services in the locale; receive compensation only for work performed; accept employment from more than one employer and earn unlimited income; receive benefits provided to all other employees; teach sport-related individual skill instruction or fee-for-lesson sessions. A student-athlete may not conduct personal sport camps or promote, market, advertise or endorse a commercial business or product. Only benefits that are authorized by NCAA legislation shall be provided to and accepted by a student-athlete. It is not permissible for a student-athlete to receive a benefit that is the result of a "special" arrangement by an institutional employee, booster, employer or fan. EMPLOYMENT, NCAA BYLAW 12 Q: What are non-permissible benefits? A: Free or reduced-fee housing/rent including the use of vacation or seasonal homes; free or reduced-fee meals; loans or cash advances in pay or salary; tuition costs or school supply expenses; gifts or presents of any type regardless of the occasion or purpose; use of telephone for long distance or use of telephone cards and cell phones; free use of any motor vehicle, boat or recreational vehicle; free use of services (i.e., automobile repair, hair care, laundry, copying, faxing, etc.); free or reduced-fee memberships at golf course, health clubs, etc. (This list is not exhaustive. Only benefits that are authorized by NCAA legislation shall be provided to and accepted by a student-athlete. It is not permissible for a student-athlete to receive a benefit that is the result of a "special" arrangement by an institutional employee, booster, employer or fan). BENEFITS AND PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT, NCAA BYLAW 16 Q: What types of promotional activities may the student-athlete be permitted to participate? A: Charitable, educational or non-profit promotions and events with requested approval from the Athletic Compliance Office prior to the event.

Q: Who is a Student-Athlete? A: A student-athlete is a student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the Nebraska athletic staff or other representative of athletic interests with a view toward the student’s ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletic program.

Q: What types of promotional activities are not permissible? A: Any fundraising activity that supports a high school organization or group that assists prospective-aged students; use of his/her name or picture; or appear to promote or market a commercial business or product. PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES, NCAA BYLAW 12

THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE The Formed more than 115 years ago, the Big Ten Conference is an association of world-class academic institutions with shared values and goals. Since its inception in 1896, the pursuit and attainment of academic excellence has been the priority for every member institution. However, maintaining the conference’s status as one of the preeminent athletic conference’s in the country also endures as an important component of the Big Ten student-athlete experience. Recognized as one of intercollegiate sports’most successful undertakings, the Big Ten strives for success from its student-athletes not only on the field and in James E. Delany the classroom, but around the world as well. Commissioner

Academics

All Big Ten Universities have been granted Tier One Status by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction awarded to just over 100 universities in the country. The Big Ten leads all conferences with the highest number of ranked graduate school programs among the top 25 according to U.S. News and World Report in 2011. The Big Ten ranks first with 23 top-25 programs in the fields of law, medical (research and primary care), business and engineering.

Successful Program

During the 2010-11 season, the Big Ten claimed six team national championships, including titles for Northwestern women’s lacrosse, Ohio State synchronized swimming and men’s volleyball, Penn State women’s volleyball and wrestling and Wisconsin women’s ice hockey. The Big Ten led all conferences with national titles in 13 different NCAA-sponsored championships from 2001-02 to 2010-11. Over that time period, the Big Ten produced championships in cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

Student-Athlete Opportunities

Big Ten universities provide over $120 million in direct financial aid to more than 9,500 men and women student-athletes who compete for 25 Big Ten championships, 12 for men and 13 for women. Conference institutions sponsor 298 teams. Other than the Ivy League, the Big Ten has the most broad-based athletic programs in the United States.

Television Exposure

The Big Ten’s media agreements with CBS Sports, ABC/ESPN, FOX Sports and the Big Ten Network (BTN) provide the conference with its greatest television exposure ever. Over 900 Big Ten events are produced and distributed nationally on an annual basis, more than any other conference. In 2006, the Big Ten created the first national conference-owned television network, the BTN. It launched on Aug. 30, 2007, and now is in its fifth year of operation. It is available to approximately 75 million homes nationally, and appears in 19 of the top 20 national media markets.

Attendance

Big Ten fans are some of the nation’s most supportive, with more than 8.9 million patrons attending conference home contests during the 2010-11 seasons for football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball alone.

Honoring Legends. Building Leaders.

The mission of the Big Ten Conference has always been to excel athletically without compromising the priority our member institutions assign to their academic standards and to their commitment to student academic success. We seek to celebrate the many accomplishments of Big Ten studentathletes while continuously reinforcing each of our member institutions’ high academic standards. Striking that important balance between academics and athletics is integral to the Big Ten’s identity, and that philosophy led to the genesis of the new football division names. Both names link directly to the Big Ten mission.

2012 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS

Janelle Giblin

After finishing fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships, which was tied for the highest finish in school history, the 2012 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team looks to continue its storied tradition as the Huskers compete as members of the Big Ten Conference for the first time. With six returning All-Americans, along with seven total letterwinners and five newcomers, the Huskers will again have conference and national title aspirations. The Huskers are led by Head Coach Dan Kendig, who is in this 19th season. Kendig believes this year’s squad has the makings to be just as good, if not better than last year’s top-five finisher. “I feel like this team is as talented, or more talented than last year’s team,” Kendig said. “I feel that way because we lost some quality routines, but we’ve gained some freshmen who are doing some good things and we’ve gained Kassandra Nathe back. I just feel like when you look from event to event, our top six is as strong or stronger than last year.” Along with competing in a different conference in 2012, the Huskers also welcome two new coaches to this year’s coaching staff. Dan Miller joins NU’s staff as an assistant coach after leading Arena Gymnastics in Joliet, Ill. Miller will coach the Huskers’ vault and floor squads. Miller was joined by former Nebraska two-time

national champion Heather Brink, who will coach the Huskers’ beam exercises, along with helping on floor choreography. Brink was an 11-time All-American from 1997-00 and won the Honda Award, given to the nation’s top woman gymnast, after her senior season.

Leading the Way - Returning Letterwinners

A nucleus of seven letterwinners returns for Nebraska as the Huskers face one of the toughest schedules in the country. Leading the way is senior Lora Evenstad, who was a two-time All-American as a junior. Evenstad is one of the most consistent gymnasts on the roster and will look to make an impact on the vault, bars and floor. Evenstad claimed 10 individual titles in 2011, including nine on the floor and one on bars. The Grand Forks, N.D., native had her best year as a Husker in 2011, posting career highs on vault (9.95), bars (9.925), beam (9.725), floor (9.925) and all-around (39.275). Kendig said he is looking forward to seeing Evenstad compete as a senior. “She is one of the most, if not the most, talented athletes we’ve had come through our doors in a long time,” Kendig said. “She’s capable of a lot of things. We just have to keep

her challenged, keep her focused. She’s a perfectionist and she wants to do well.” Junior Janelle Giblin returns after spending much of last season as the only all-arounder on the team. The three-time All-American, including first-team honors on vault in 2011, claimed five event titles last season, including two on bars, one on beam and two in the all-around. Giblin will be counted on to do much of the same in 2012, where she will be a force in the lineup at all four events. After sitting out last season with an injury, Nebraska welcomes back junior Kassandra Nathe to the lineup. Nathe, a second-team All-American on the bars in 2010, will return to the Huskers’ lineup as an all-arounder and a three-event specialist. Nathe will bring a wealth of experience back for NU, along with being a role model off the competition floor. Nathe was one of Nebraska's Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award winners in 2011. Junior Brittany Skinner, who was labeled as the team’s “X-factor” before the season by Kendig, returns looking to do big things after earning second-team All-American honors during her sophomore campaign. Skinner brings power to the Nebraska lineup and will use that as she looks to make a mark

NEW CONFERENCE. SAME TRADITION. on all four events for NU. Last season, Skinner was a three-event specialist for the Huskers on vault, bars and beam. Skinner set two career-high marks during her sophomore season, including a 9.90 on vault and a 9.875 on the bars. The Los Altos, Calif., native was named to the All-Big 12 Championship team on the uneven bars in 2011 and was a first-team All-American on the vault in 2010. Sophomore Deanna Barmore has the ability to help the Huskers on the vault and provide depth on beam for NU. Barmore, who had ankle surgery in the offseason, posted a career high on the vault at the NCAA Corvallis Regional with a 9.725. Sophomore Jamie Schleppenbach is one of the most talented Huskers on vault and will help NU on the floor exercise. Schleppenbach became a first team All-American last season for NU, posting a 9.95 score on the vault two times including once at the Super Six finals. The Lincoln native will look to improve on her 12th-place showing in the vault event finals last season. Nebraska’s last returning letterwinner is Emily Wong, who has the ability to compete in all four events for the Huskers during her sophomore season. Wong earned first-team All-America honors as a freshman on the uneven bars. She posted career highs on the bars at the Super Six team finals last season with a 9.90 on two occasions. The Grand Forks, N.D., native notched four event titles, including three on bars and one on beam.

Huskers Welcome Talented Newcomers

The Huskers welcome five talented newcomers with a wealth of experience at every level of gymnastics. The group includes four Level 10 gymnasts from the high school ranks, along with Katelyn Busacker, who transferred from Ball State for her senior season. Busacker was a three-year letterwinner at Ball State before transferring after the 2010 season. The Papillion, Neb., native will provide the Huskers with depth on the bars and beam events, where she posted career highs of 9.85 and 9.825, respectively. Busacker did not compete in 2011, but will be looked upon for her maturity as the season progresses. One of the most talented newcomers is Rogers, Minn., native Jessie DeZiel, who respresented the United States at the 2011 Pan American Games. DeZiel, who was one of the top performers on a U.S. squad that won team gold, posted teamhigh scores on vault (15.125), beam (13.275), and floor exercise (13.150). DeZiel, a former two-time Junior Olympic Champion, is slated to compete on all four events for Nebraska this season. The Huskers also welcome a set of twin sisters to the team, as Amanda and Jennifer Lauer will join the squad after competing for Premiere Gymnastics in Omaha, Neb. Both Level 10 gymnasts, Amanda will use her freshman campaign to provide depth on the beam for NU, while Jennifer is on the cusp of cracking the lineup in all four events. Nebraska’s final newcomer is Desire’ Stephens, who will provide energy and depth on all four events for the Huskers. Stephens was the 2011 Nebraska state all-around champion and took fifth at the 2011 Region 4 meet in the all-around. Stephens is one of four Nebraska natives on this year’s team.

of the deepest events for the Huskers this season. Janelle Giblin and Jamie Schleppenbach earned first-team honors last season, while Lora Evenstad and Brittany Skinner were first teamers in 2010. Along with the four gymnasts listed above, the Huskers will also look to true freshman Jessie DeZiel and sophomore Emily Wong to round out the lineup, with Kassandra Nathe and Deanna Barmore competing for time in the lineup. True freshmen Jennifer Lauer and Desire’ Stephens will provide depth for the Huskers on the event. “Being new, I’m still trying to get a hold of what the girls are doing,” assistant coach Dan Miller said. “I’ve looked at last year’s videos and we’re looking to build off that. Obviously, the success was there last year. We want to continue what they did and try to improve in other places. Everybody’s working hard."

Event Preview: Uneven Bars

-3 All-Americans: Giblin, Nathe, Wong -All-Big 12: Giblin The Huskers lose first-team All-American Maria Scaffidi from last year’s squad, but return a solid nucleus of gymnasts that include three All-Americans. Sophomore Emily Wong will return after becoming a first-team All-American last season when she posted a 9.90 score twice, including once at the NCAA Super Six Team finals. Both Janelle Giblin and Kassandra Nathe were second-team honorees in 2010. Last season, Giblin tied her career high on bars with a 9.875 in the Super Six Finals, while Nathe returns after sitting out last season with an injury. Nathe scored a 9.85 on the bars at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Joining the three All-Americans in the lineup will be senior Lora Evenstad, who is one of the most consistent Huskers, while true freshman Jessie DeZiel is also a front-runner to crack the starting rotation. Junior Brittany Skinner is also in place to start in the rotation for the Huskers, while Ball State transfer Katelyn Busacker is a candidate to see time as well. “I feel like we just need to work on all the things that are important in bars,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It’s going to come down to the handstands, the form and execution and the landings. Those are the things we’ve been trying to work on. We’re getting close. I like what we have on bars.”

Event Preview: Beam

-1 All-American: Skinner After finishing the year on a strong note last season on beam, the Huskers look to build off what they started. Nebraska loses two second-team All-Americans in Brittnee Habbib and Maddie Steinauer, but return second-team All-American Brittany Skinner, who will lead the Husker beam attack. The Huskers also welcome back Nathe, who was named to the All-Big 12 championship team for the beam in 2010. Other gymnasts who will be contributors on beam include Giblin, Schleppenbach, Wong and DeZiel. Wong was named to the All-Big 12 championship team in 2011 for her efforts on the balance beam. Assistant coach Heather Brink said she wants the Huskers to pick up where they left off last season, while being more consistent. “I feel like last year they had a little bit of inconsistency at the beginning of the year,” Brink said. “I felt like they finished pretty well toward the end of the year. I’m just looking for them to start off where they left off last year and we're really working on our consistency.”

Event Preview: Floor

-1 All-American: Evenstad -All-Big 12: Evenstad (2010) One event the Huskers are most excited about is the floor exercise. Assistant coach Dan Miller noted that every gymnast on the squad has a floor routine, while several Huskers will feature new routines this season. Leading the way is senior Lora Evenstad, who earned first-team All-America honors last year after posting a 9.925 score four times during the year. Evenstad collected nine individual titles on floor last season. Emily Wong, Jessie DeZiel, Kassandra Nathe, Brittany Skinner and Janelle Giblin will be the top candidates to round out the floor routine rotation. Miller hopes to increase the difficulty levels of last year’s floor exercises with more difficult passes and high-energy choreography. “Probably the most exciting thing is there is going to be quite a few new floor routines, which is exciting for the girls, too,” Miller said. “They get new music, new choreography, that’s kind of a boost for them. Right now I feel like everybody has a floor routine, we’re just trying to up the difficulty.”

GUIDE TO WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS General

Six gymnasts from each team compete on each of the four events. The team score is obtained by adding the five highest scores on each event. Common deductions are landing deductions. One tenth is taken away for each step that the gymnast takes, while half a tenth is taken for a small hop, and two tenths are deducted for a large hop, step or jump. Other deductions include bent arms, legs, toes or leg separation. Falls that occur are deducted five tenths each time. Finally, a gymnast can receive a neutral deduction on balance beam and floor exercise. Neutral deductions are one tenth; and are received for being over time on beam and floor, and for stepping out of bounds on the floor exercise. They occur each time a gymnast violates these rules. Each event, with the exception of vault, has a series of four (bars), five (beam) and four (floor) special requirements (SRs), and omission of any of these requirements results in a two tenths deduction from the start value.

Start Values Start value for college 9.5, extra .5 earned through bonus • All judges determine start value • It is not mandatory that the start values agree

Bonus

Special Connections • Achieved through unique and difficult combinations • Special connections have a value of 0.10 or 0.20. • Bonus points for special connections will be awarded only for good technical presentation Additional "D/E" • A maximum of 0.40 may be awarded as bonus points for additional "D/E" • Additional "D" elements will receive 0.10 bonus points • Additional "E" elements will receive 0.20 bonus points

Vault

Vault requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Unlike the other events, each vault has its own start value. Deductions are taken from the start value for technical errors in the pre-flight (approach), the block (the rise from the horse), the post-flight (height and distance from the horse) and the landing. Each gymnast will perform only one vault, but has a maximum of three attempts to go over the vault table one time. Special Requirements • Must touch the vault table with both hands • Must land on feet first

Uneven Bars

A bars routine must contain at least two bar changes for the first two SRs. A bar change is when the gymnast moves from the high bar to the low bar or vice versa. It must also contain two release moves. A release move is defined as when the gymnast lets go of the bar with both hands and flips or twists and regrasps either bar. Uneven bar routines must contain change of direction that is at least 180 degrees or more for the fourth SR. The final SR is a dismount. A bar routine must contain at least 10 skills. Special Requirements • At least two bar changes • Two flight elements (minimum of two different "C" elements or a "D" and "B") • One element with LA (longitudinal axis) turn, minimum of "C" • A “C” dismount

Balance Beam

The Huskers work to move on the beam like they would when performing on the floor. Their goal is to have routines that set them apart from other teams in the country. The beam is 16 feet long, four feet high and four inches wide. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration. A beam routine cannot be more than 90 seconds. The first SR a beam routine must contain is a tumbling series. It must also contain a dance series of two leaps and/or jumps, one of which must have a value of “C” or higher. The gymnast must complete a turn of at least 360 degrees for the third SR. The fourth SR is a leap with large amplitude, which may be part of the dance series or on its own. Finally, the gymnast must dismount the beam as the final SR. Special Requirements • One acro series with a minimum of two flight elements (both must start and finish on the beam; one element must be a "C" with or without hand support) • One dance series of two or more elements (one element at least "C" or higher) • Minimum of 360 degree turn – no hand support permitted • One leap, jump or hop requiring a 180 degree split (front or side) • “C” dismount or “B” dismount preceded by and directly connected to any “C” element (acro/dance)

Floor Exercise

Floor exercise is a combination of dance and tumbling to music on a 12 meter by 12 meter space. The duration of a floor routine should be between 70 and 90 seconds. A floor routine must contain at least two tumbling passes (first SR), one of which contains two saltos (second SR). It must also contain three different saltos within the two tumbling passes (third SR). The final SR is that the routine contains a dismount commensurate with the rest of the routine. Special Requirements • One tumbling series with two saltos, same or different • Three different saltos within the exercise • Dance series with a minimum of two elements (one "C" element or higher) • Minimum of "C" salto as the last salto or in the last connection of saltos
