Growing Up!

Why is Hand Washing so Important? A delicious mud pie, a good-luck rock, a friendly frog — just some of the types of goodies kids love to bring home. But these adorable gifts also can bring millions of germs with them. Kids don't always listen when parents tell them to wash their hands before eating, after using the bathroom, or when they come inside from playing. But it's a message worth repeating — hand washing is by far the best way to Washing Hands Correctly prevent germs from spreading and Here's how to scrub those germs away. to keep kids from getting sick. Teach this routine to your kids — or better First Line of Defense Against Germs Germs can spread many ways, including: • Touching dirty hands • Changing dirty diapers • hrough contaminated water and food • Through droplets in the air released during a cough or sneeze • On contaminated surfaces • Through contact with a sick person's body fluids When kids come into contact with germs, they can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they're infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness. Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses — from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and most types of infectious diarrhea.

yet, wash your hands together often so they learn how important this good habit is:

• Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the water isn't too hot for little hands. • Use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds (antibacterial soap isn't necessary — any soap will do). Make sure you get in between the fingers and under the nails where germs like to hang out. And don't forget the wrists! • Rinse and dry well with a clean towel. To minimize the germs passed around your family, make regular hand washing a rule for everyone, especially: • Before eating and cooking • After using the bathroom • After cleaning around the house • After touching animals, including family pets • Before and after visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives • After blowing one's nose, coughing, or sneezing • After being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.) Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The few seconds you spend at the sink could save you trips to the doctor's office. www.kidshealth.org

A Breakthrough in Baby Monitoring Technology Angelcare Releases Wireless Movement Sensor Pad with Activity Analytics Angelcare, the worldwide leader in movement monitoring, continues to lead the baby monitoring segment in both technology and style with the launch of their new AC417 and AC517 (Baby Movement Monitors). These new movement, sound, and video monitoring systems include the only wireless movement sensor pad on the market, and feature Angelcare’s new Activity Analytics for tracking baby’s movement level.

Ultimate Peace of Mind “Our new wireless sensor pad is all about simplicity combined with safety. Parents are going to love it,” says Angelcare President Jordan Riggs, “but the real game-changer is the activity tracking and reporting built into our new monitors.” Current fans of Angelcare products know that their monitors are designed to sense baby’s slightest movements and sound an alarm if no movement is detected after 20 seconds. Angelcare’s new models, equipped with “Activity Analytics”, offer this core alarm feature plus the ability to track, record, and report on baby’s bigger movements (like restlessness, rollovers, and kicks). With this insight into baby’s activity level during sleep, parents are better able to adapt routines and respond to baby’s needs. The ultimate result is more peace of mind (and rest) for everyone.

Modern Design Angelcare’s new systems not only feature the latest advancements in monitoring technology, they also offer a sleek new design. The clean, modern design of the new Baby Movement Monitors will complement any decor. In the nursery, the wireless sensor pad is accompanied by a low profile wall-mountable video camera with wide-angle lens and color-changing room temperature display. The new parent unit features a large touchscreen display (5” on the AC517 or 4.3” on the AC417) which enables caregivers to check on baby in real time, and track baby’s activity level with up to two months of data. “Today’s parents use technology in all aspects of life,” Riggs says, “and at Angelcare, we provide moms and dads with easy-to-use monitors that help them care for baby, relax and enjoy the adventure of parenthood.”

Angelcare is committed to giving parents peace of mind while helping their children thrive. The new AC517 and AC417 Baby Movement Monitors will be available at North American retailers in January 2017. The AC417 (4.3” Movement, Video and Sound monitor with Touch Screen and Wireless Sensor Pad) will have a recommended retail of $229.99 and the AC517 (5.0” Movement, Video and Sound Monitor with Touch Screen Monitor and Wireless Sensor Pad), a recommended retail of $249.99.

3 Things

Women Should Know If They

Outlive Their Spouse

The importance of women taking an active role in a couple's financial planning represents more than just jockeying over who gets to control the checking account. "Women on average live longer than men, which means they are going to need more money in retirement or else risk outliving their savings," says Cristina Acosta, co-owner with Nancy Fromm of Money Wise (www. moneywiseaz.com), a financial planning firm. "That means they have a lot at stake. And women – men, too, for that matter – often don't realize just how long retirement might last. If you retire around age 65, it's possible your retirement is going to last 25 or 30 years." The death of a spouse can pose numerous financial difficulties. First, the survivor has to deal with the emotional issues associated with grieving, which means some financial decisions may be put on hold. "That's not necessarily a bad thing," Fromm says. "You don't want to rush into any decisions you don't have to make immediately." But it won't take long to start experiencing some of the financial consequences. If both spouses were drawing Social Security, one of those monthly checks is about to disappear. If the spouse had a pension, the amount of the check may be reduced for the survivor, or it could be eliminated. Acosta and Fromm have made improving the retirement outlook for women a significant part of their work. They just recently launched a division of their company called Woman’s Worth (www.womans-worth.com/scottsdale) designed to focus on not only a woman’s finances, but also her physical and mental health, and her total well being.

12

Acosta and Fromm say there are plenty of things worth knowing about finances before and after a spouse dies, from long-term care planning to tax minimization planning. Here are just three that women should keep in mind:

• Seek professional advice. This is especially important

for women who left finances up to their husbands. A financial professional can help you get a better handle on the options for making retirement more secure. "Find someone you're comfortable with," Acosta says. "You'll want someone who can help you plan strategically and will take the time to understand you, your situation and your needs."

• Understand the importance of life planning. For

women, it's more than the money. It's about understanding the emotional and even physical health issues that woman face when dealing with finances. Having an integrated approach to the planning process empowers women to address the connection between their health and wealth.

• Protect your assets. If you're nearing retirement or already in retirement, it's critical to protect the assets you already have. Review how much risk you have in your investments and decide whether you need reduce that risk, and more importantly, validate whether your assets are laying the foundation towards a clear journey to achieving your dream-retirement lifestyle. "It's vital that women appropriately manage what they have," Fromm says. "It needs to last and provide the retirement lifestyle they're after." About Cristina Acosta and Nancy Fromm Cristina Acosta and Nancy Fromm are co-owners of Money Wise (www. moneywiseaz.com), a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based financial-planning firm that helps create retirement-income strategies for people nearing or in retirement. Acosta has been in the retirement-planning industry for 22 years and Fromm has 30 years of retirement-planning experience. Both are Series 65 licensed and are fiduciaries.

DELIVERING THE TRUTH FOR MORE THAN 35 YEARS: E.P.T™ SURVEY EXPLORES EMOTIONAL SIDE OF HOME PREGNANCY TESTING New survey highlights women’s experiences as they wait to find out if they are pregnant and how attitudes have changed over the years In celebration of its upcoming 40th anniversary, e.p.t®, the makers of the original home pregnancy test, is exploring the emotional journey that women experience as they wait to find out if they are pregnant – and how it has changed over the years. Ept conducted a survey asking more than 600 women within two age groups, ages 22 – 34 and 60+, their thoughts about finding out whether they were pregnant and what the experience was like at the time. “As the brand that invented the at-home pregnancy test and changed the way women find out they’re pregnant, e.p.t® has been delivering that life changing moment of truth, with accuracy, since 1977,” said Antoniette Vessa, Women’s Health Brand Manager at Prestige Brands. “Now, we’re sharing insight about the emotions that women experience during home pregnancy testing and showing how attitudes have changed over the past 40 years.”

• Though many respondents aged 60 or older (38 percent) were skeptical about the efficacy of at-home pregnancy tests when they first hit shelves nearly 40 years ago, most women (81 percent) now consider them the first step in confirming a pregnancy.

The survey uncovered a range of emotions and experiences related to finding out about pregnancy, with the majority of women (75 percent) agreeing that home testing has significantly improved the process. The top findings include:

Moment of Truth: The Suspense is Over • When you’re waiting for some of the biggest news of your life, time is of the essence. Approximately 8 out of 10 women first learned they were pregnant from an athome pregnancy test, and nearly half said they took the test immediately after buying it.

The Truth Can Be Surprising • Good things can happen when you least expect them – 45 percent of women surveyed said their pregnancy was unplanned.

• While home pregnancy testing is commonplace among women today, only 16 percent of respondents aged 60 or older have ever taken one.

The Truth Can Be Scary • When it came to confirming their pregnancy with a home pregnancy test, 55 percent of women were relieved to find out they weren’t pregnant. • Nearly 4 in 10 women (37 percent) taking a home pregnancy admitted to feeling more scared than excited (28 percent) about finding out whether they were pregnant. Truth at Home (Goodbye Waiting Room) • In the days before home pregnancy testing, most women (82 percent) would make appointments with their doctors to confirm the pregnancy – many (twothirds) waiting up to eight weeks after suspecting they might be pregnant. 14

• Today, nearly half of women (47 percent) learn that they are pregnant within the first 4 weeks of their pregnancy. Only a small number (two percent) find out in their second trimester.

The survey was conducted by online research and survey technology provider Toluna, from April 4 to April 12, 2016. To learn more about the pregnancy tests offered by e.p.t, visit www. eptfamily.com and www.youtube.com/eptfamilyplanning. About Prestige Brands Holdings, Inc. Your Baby's Hearing, Vision and Other Senses at 1 Month

Every minute that they're awake awake, babies take in the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of the world around them. Although it may take a while to understand what all this information means, your baby can still find joy and comfort in the familiar faces, voices, and sensations of everyday life. What Can My Baby See? Babies this age can focus on shapes that are close by, but see distant objects as blurry because they are nearsighted. As babies grow, eyesight improves. By the end of 3 months, they can follow a moving object, are more interested in shapes and patterns, and can spot familiar faces, even at a distance. Human faces are one of their favorite things to look at, especially their own or a parent’s face. Install a baby-safe crib mirror at your baby’s eye level and see how your baby watches himself or herself. Your baby’s color vision is also developing, so brightly colored wall hangings or toys will help develop your little one’s ability to distinguish color. Soft pastel colors, though, are hard for a baby to appreciate — something to keep in mind when buying toys and books. What Can My Baby Hear? Your baby has been hearing sounds since way back in the womb. Mother’s heartbeat, the gurgles of her digestive system, and even the sounds of her voice and the voices of other family members are part of a baby’s world before birth. Once your baby is born, the sounds of the outside world come in loud and clear. Your baby may startle at the unexpected bark of a dog nearby or seem soothed by the gentle whirring of the clothes dryer or the hum of the vacuum cleaner. 16

sprinklesmagazine.com

Your baby loves to hear your voice, so talk, babble, sing, and coo away. Take special advantage of your baby’s own “talking” to have a “conversation.” If you hear your baby make a sound, repeat it and wait for him or her to make another. You are teaching your baby valuable lessons about tone, pacing, and taking turns when talking to someone else. Babies this age seem to respond best to a higher-pitched voice, which is why most people naturally raise the pitch of their voices and exaggerate their speech when talking to a baby. This is fine — studies have shown that "baby talk" doesn't delay speech development. In fact, responding to your baby encourages speech. Feel free to mix in some regular adult words and tone with the baby talk. It may seem early, but you're setting the stage for your baby's first words. Besides voices, your baby will probably enjoy listening to music (play a variety of styles) and may be fascinated by the routine sounds of life as well. Keep your baby nearby as you rattle pans while making dinner, and let him or her sit in a baby seat within earshot of older siblings laughing and playing. Baby rattles and musical mobiles and toys are other good ways to stimulate your baby's hearing. Your newborn probably had a hearing screening before being released from the hospital (most states require this). If not, or if your baby was born at home or a birthing center, it's important to have a hearing screening as soon as possible. Most children who are born with a hearing loss can be diagnosed through a hearing screening. What Can My Baby Taste and Smell? Your baby can taste and smell and will favor sweet tastes over bitter ones. For example, a baby will choose to suck on a bottle of sweetened water, but will turn away or cry if given something bitter or sour to taste. Likewise, babies will turn toward smells they favor and turn away from bad odors.

Though sweetness is preferred, taste preferences will continue to develop during the first year. In fact, studies show that a mother’s diet can affect the way her breast milk tastes. These first flavors can help shape flavor preferences later on. For example, a mother who ate spicy foods while nursing is likely to have a child who grows up to favor spicy foods. For now, breast milk or formula will fully satisfy your baby. Why Is Touch Important? It won’t be long before your baby will be reaching out and touching everything. But now,

your baby depends on you to provide touch. Babies know they’re loved and cared for when they’re held, hugged, and kissed. Make it fun, too. Your baby will respond joyfully to a game of "This Little Piggy" as you touch your baby's toes or fingers. Introduce different textures and temperatures: the softness of a feather, the hardness of a wooden block, the cool feel of a window in winter. When babies feel the world around them, they learn about life. If You're Worried If you want a little reassurance that your baby's senses are working well, you can do some unscientific testing for yourself. For example, if you're worried about your baby's ability to see, notice if your baby watches your face closely. Does your baby watch moving objects? Your baby may appear cross-eyed when trying to look at something that is close. This is usually normal in the first few months. Let your doctor know if your child's eyes turn in or out. If you're worried about your baby's ability to hear, ask yourself these questions: Does the baby startle at an unexpected sound? Does the baby respond to the sound of your voice, even if he or she cannot see you? (Your baby's response might be to turn toward your voice, stop crying, smile, or get excited and move his or her arms and legs.) Does the baby respond to music and other sounds in your environment? If you're still worried about your little one's hearing or vision, talk to your doctor. The earlier problems with seeing and hearing are found, the better they can be treated. Date Night/Afternoon: Couples Connect with Fun By Ashley Talmadge

Experts say strong relationships depend on partners regularly finding time to connect, share dreams, be intimate, and have fun as a twosome. Yet the dates seen as essential for a new couple often become fewer and farther between as a relationship endures. A recent survey by Glamour magazine found that only 12 percent of women in long-term relationships have regular dates with their significant other. It turns out that doing new things together sparks the attraction that fired the relationship early on. In “The Date Night Opportunity,” a publication of the National Marriage Project, sociologist Brad Wilcox notes, “Couples who engage in novel activities that are fun, active, or otherwise arousing—from hiking to dancing to travel to card games—enjoy higher levels of relationship quality.”

20

Playing hooky for an afternoon date just makes it all the more exciting— and saves bucks on the babysitter while keeping kids’ evening schedules intact. So do your relationship a solid. Use some of that flex time and schedule a date—and get out of the dinner-and-a-movie rut! Here are some ideas to rev up your couple time. Get into the race. Whether you’re a spectator or a racer, there’s a course to suit your fancy. The thunder of hooves will get your heart pounding during an afternoon at the horse races. Most tracks provide info on how to wager, so increase the excitement by placing a couple of $2 bets. Or rent go-karts at the local raceway, and have your own dual of speed. Have a meeting of the minds. Attend a talk by a favorite writer, or visit a natural history exhibit. Science museums often sponsor adultoriented events, and many pubs hold regular trivia contests. Taking a class in art or literature as a couple can provide new fodder for discussion. Or develop a new skill you can practice together, such as ballroom dancing or archery. Community colleges and recreation centers have low-cost offerings for adults—everything from basketry to rock climbing to woodworking. Hunt for treasure. Whose heart doesn’t quicken at the prospect of unearthing a hidden prize? Geocaching is a way to let your inner explorer shine, and some caches are specifically designated “romantic.” Get started with a GPS-enabled phone (or other personal GPS device). Online geocaching sites provide info for beginners, as well as descriptions and GPS coordinates for “treasure” caches. Try www.opencaching.com or www.geocaching.com. Focus on friendly competition. Some all-in-good-fun rivalry can be a great diversion from the daily grind. Sweat it out on the racquetball court. Shoot a game of pool at the local pub, knock down some pins at the bowling alley, or pick your tiles for an afternoon-long Scrabble death match. Just choose something you won’t take too seriously. Need something to strive for? Let the winner choose a lunch venue. Whether BBQ or bistro, it’ll taste like a blue ribbon meal. Cook up your creativity. Novel food can be an adventure unto itself. The

Importance

of Naps

Nap. It's a small word, but for most parents a hugely important one. Why? Sleep is a major requirement for good health, and for young kids to get enough of it, some daytime sleep is usually needed. Crucial physical and mental development occurs in early childhood, and naps provide much-needed downtime for growth and rejuvenation. Naps also help keep kids from becoming overtired, which not only takes a toll on their moods but may also make it harder for them to fall asleep at night. And naptime gives parents a brief oasis during the day and time to tackle household chores or just unwind. Sleep Needs by Age There's no one-size-fits-all answer regarding how much daytime sleep kids need. It all depends on the age, the child, and the sleep total during a 24-hour period. For example, one toddler may sleep 13 hours at night with only some daytime catnapping, while another gets 9 hours at night but takes a solid 2-hour nap each afternoon. Though sleep needs are highly individual, these age-by-age guidelines give an idea of average daily sleep requirements: Birth to 6 months: Infants require about 14 to 18 total hours of sleep per day. Younger infants tend to sleep on and off around the clock, waking every 1 to 3 hours to eat. As they approach 4 months of age, sleep rhythms become more established. Most babies sleep 9 to 12 hours at night, usually with an interruption for feeding, and have 2 to 3 daytime naps lasting about 30 minutes to 2 hours each. 6 to 12 months: Babies this age usually sleep about 14 hours total for the day. This usually includes two naps a day, which may last 20 minutes for some babies, for others a few hours. At this age, infants may not need to wake at night to feed, but may begin to experience separation anxiety, which can contribute to sleep disturbances. Toddlers (1 to 3 years): Toddlers generally require 12 to 14 hours of sleep, including an afternoon nap of 1 to 3 hours. Young toddlers might still be taking two naps, but naps should not occur too close to bedtime, as they may make it harder for toddlers to fall asleep at night. Preschoolers (3 to 5 years): Preschoolers average about 11 to 12 hours at night, plus an afternoon nap. Most give up this nap by 5 years of age. School-age (5 to 12 years): School-age kids need about 10 to 11 hours at night. Some 5-year-olds might still need a nap, and if a regular nap isn't possible, they might need an earlier bedtime. 28

Signs of Insufficient Sleep Most parents underestimate the amount of sleep kids need, so be sure to watch your child's behavior for signs of sleep deprivation, which can range from the obvious — like fatigue — to more subtle problems with behavior and schoolwork. Ask yourself: Does my child act sleepy during the day? Does my child get cranky and irritable in the late afternoon? Is it a battle to get my child out of bed in the morning? Is my child inattentive, impatient, hyperactive, or aggressive? Does my child have trouble focusing on schoolwork and other tasks? If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider adjusting your child's sleep or nap schedule. It may take several weeks to find a routine that works. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your child's sleep. Naptime Routines and Other Concerns The key to good napping can be as simple as setting up a good nap routine early on and sticking to it. With infants, watch for cues like fussing and rubbing eyes, then put your baby to bed while sleepy but not yet asleep. This teaches kids how to fall asleep themselves — a skill that only becomes more important as they get older. Soft music, dim lights, or a quiet story or rhyme at bedtime can help ease the transition to sleep and become a source of comfort for your child. For toddlers and preschoolers, sticking to a naptime schedule can be more challenging. Though many do still love their nap, others don't want to miss out on a minute of the action and will fight sleep even as their eyes are closing. In this case, don't let naptime become a battle — you can't force your child to sleep, but you can insist on some quiet time. Let your child read books or play quietly in his or her room. Parents are often surprised by how quickly quiet time can lead to sleep time — but even if it doesn't, at least your child is getting some much-needed rest. If your child has given up daytime naps, consider adjusting to an earlier bedtime. Many parents worry that naptime will interfere with kids' bedtime, especially on days when a child takes a late-afternoon nap. But before you end naps entirely in an effort to wear out your child by bedtime, consider this: Wellrested kids are quicker to settle down at night than overtired ones. Overtired kids are often "wired" and restless, unable to self-soothe at bedtime, and more likely to wake through the night. If you feel your child's late naptime is the cause of bedtime problems, try making the nap a little bit earlier, which may mean waking your child a little earlier in the morning so the nap can begin sooner. You might also try waking your child from a nap earlier than usual so he or she has a longer active period before bedtime. In other words, try to make some adjustments before abandoning the nap — both you and your child will feel much better if there is one! www.kidshealth.org

You’ll

cooking a gourmet dinner

It sounds so dreamy, doesn't it – going out for a romantic dinner on Valentine's Day? Except it doesn't always turn out that way. All too often the restaurant is crowded, the servers cranky and the "exclusive" prix fixe menu is limited and expensive. Not to mention that should you decide to get affectionate – you're in a public place.

"There are so many advantages to dining in on that special night," says Chef Blakely Trettenero, who writes about her culinary adventures on her blog, Everyday Gourmet with Blakely (www.gourmetwithblakely.com). "It's more comfortable, less expensive and super exclusive, because you can have whatever you want – from the cocktails to the entrée to dessert. "And what better way to show you care than to cook a fantastic meal for – or with – that someone special?"

at Home on Valentine's Day

If the idea of pulling together a fancy dinner on a weeknight (Valentine's Day is on a Tuesday this year), fear not. Trettenero says there are plenty of delicious recipes that will tickle your true love's taste buds without taking hours to make. (Just in case you want to save your energy for later.) Here are a few of Trettenero's favorite romantic dishes: Vanilla Bean & Bourbon Champagne Cocktail The best of both worlds: Champagne for the ladies and bourbon for the men!

Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup

Herbed Savory Palmiers

1. 1/2 cup sugar 2. 1/2 cup water 3. 1/2 vanilla bean, cut in half

Perfect for Valentine's Day – this pastry is heart-shaped! Ingredients 1. 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 2. 1/2 cup sundried tomatoes, minced 3. 4 cloves garlic, minced 4. 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped 5. 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped 6. 1 tablespoon olive oil 7. salt 8. pepper 9. 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 10. 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese Instructions 1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees 2. In a bowl, add the finely chopped sundried tomatoes, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, chopped thyme, salt, pepper and olive oil. Mix until combined and set aside 3. On a lightly floured surface, slightly roll out your thawed puff pastry sheet and transfer to a cutting board 4. To the rolled out puff pastry add the sundried tomato and herb mixture evenly 5. Evenly sprinkle the top with the grated Parmesan and Gruyere cheese 6. Starting on one side, roll the puff pastry tightly, stopping at the middle 7. Roll the other side of the puff pastry tightly until you reach the middle 8. Cut into 1-inch pieces and place on a parchment-lined sheet tray. Put them into the oven and let them bake for 15-17 minutes until golden brown 9. Once they're baked, serve them warm.

Cocktail 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

1 tablespoon vanilla bean simple syrup 1 dash bitters Squeeze of lemon juice 1/2 ounce bourbon of choice Champagne

Instructions 1. First, make the simple syrup. In a small pan over medium-high heat add the sugar, water and split vanilla bean. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved and it has come to a slight simmer. 2. Turn it off and set it aside to steep and come to room temperature. 3. When the simple syrup is cooled it's time to make the cocktail. In your champagne glass add the simple syrup, a dash of bitters, a squeeze of lemon juice and the bourbon. Give it a stir to combine. 4. Top it off with cold champagne, add a lemon twist and serve!

Baked Chicken Thighs with Tomatoes, Artichokes & Capers Ingredients 1. 2 pounds chicken thighs (about 4 thighs) 2. salt 3. pepper 4. drizzle of olive oil 5. 1 medium onion, diced small 6. 3 cloves garlic, minced 7. 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 8. 1 teaspoon brown sugar 9. 1 28-ounce can peeled plum tomatoes 10. 1 14-ounce can quartered artichoke hearts, drained 11. 2 teaspoons drained capers 12. 2 sprigs fresh rosemary Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees, then preheat a heavy-bottomed pan with a drizzle of olive oil over medium-high heat 2. Use paper towel to soak up any extra moisture on the chicken. This prevents the chicken from getting golden brown when you sear it. Season both sides with salt and pepper and put the chicken in the preheated oil, skin side down 3. Cook the chicken until golden brown on one side, then flip to cook on the other side. You're not trying to cook the chicken through, only brown it! 4. Once the chicken is brown on both sides, take it out of the pan and put it on a plate and set it aside 5. If there is a lot of fat in the pan, drain most of it, leaving only about a teaspoon or so in the bottom 6. Add the diced onions with a pinch of salt and pepper to the pan and cook for a few minutes until opaque 7. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute 8. Add the balsamic vinegar to the pan, scraping the bottom to get up any bits at the bottom. Add the brown sugar to the balsamic vinegar, stir to combine, and let it cook until slightly reduced, about 7-8 minutes 9. Add the can of tomatoes into the pan and turn off the heat. Use a knife to roughly cut up the tomatoes in the pan and then add the drained artichokes and capers. Give it a stir to mix everything together 10. Add the chicken thighs back into the pan, nestling them into the tomato mixture. Add the rosemary sprigs to the top and put the pan into the preheated oven uncovered 11. Let it cook for about 25 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through 12. Serve with a simple side and you have a gourmet dinner ready in no time.

Cherry Clafoutis Ingredients 1. 2 cups pitted cherries, cut in half 2. 2 tablespoons slivered almonds 3. 3 eggs 4. 3/4 granulated sugar 5. 1 tablespoon brown sugar 6. 1/4 teaspoon salt 7. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 8. 1 cup whole milk 9. 3/4 teaspoon almond extract 10. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 11. Powdered sugar (optional) Instructions 1. The hardest part of this recipe is removing the pits from the cherries. I don't have a cherry pitter, so I just get the pits out the old-fashioned way. I cut the cherries in half, twist the two halves to expose the pit, and take my knife and cut it out 2. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees 3. In a 9-inch buttered and floured pie pan, add the fresh cherry halves and slivered almonds 4. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugars, salt, flour, milk, almond extract and vanilla extract until completely smooth. Pour the batter over the cherries and almonds and put in the oven 5. Let the clafoutis cook for 35-45 minutes depending on your oven. 6. Take the clafoutis out of the oven and let it cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and serve. sprinklesmagazine.com
