ALL WRAPPED UP

SPRING ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES

It’s time to say farewell to the 459 graduates in the Class of 2022. They’ve been an invaluable part of our Panther community and we’re cheering them on as they pursue further education, a career or trade, take a role with the military or do something else altogether.

They gathered to put on their gowns for commencement. There was laughter, a giddiness and a collective sigh of relief.

A few whispered, “We did it.” Many hugged.

Others shared a high five. These weren’t the graduates. No, these were the staff who shepherded them to this day. After another unusual school year, the feeling of accomplishment and closure was amplified.

With four spring girls’ sports, five spring boys’ sports and 46 student-based interest clubs and co-curricular activities at Spring Lake Park High School, our students found opportunities to connect and compete.

Exploring common interests and passions outside the classroom helps students discover themselves and prepare for their next steps.

These students started their K-12 journey in 2009. This Panther class includes our first graduating class of Spanish Immersion students. 14 are moving on to participate in band or choir in college, and 26 are playing their sport at the collegiate level next year. They’ve made us proud in so many ways and we know they will go on to do great things.

These last few months have been filled with end of year events and senior celebrations. Each milestone led the way to the biggest celebration of all at 3M Mariucci Arena as they threw their caps in the air and officially became graduates of the Class of 2022.

“Let’s be honest – it was another wild year,” says Jeff Ronneberg, superintendent.

“We aren’t back to ‘normal’ and likely never will be, but there is a sense in our schools that we are recovering into something new. We’ve learned a lot, tried so many new things and we’re seeing encouraging outcomes.”

Despite years of pandemic living, SLP Schools have continued to advance work aligned to the district’s vision and strategic plan. This year’s district operational plan included intentional work to engage and support learners emerging from the pandemic, strengthen connections in our community and capitalize on the creativity of staff. Every Class of 2022 senior was given the gift of a yard/window sign thanks to the support of the Panther Foundation. Always a special day and these students are always #SLPPantherProud!

This spring, multiple sports were section champions and several clubs had students compete at the state level. Girls and Boys Track & Field had an amazing season with nine students competing and each earning all-state at the state meet. The high school’s rocket league placed 1st at the state championship out of 16 teams.

From adapted sports to Robotics Club to golf and theater, we shared our excellence and Panther pride wherever we went. It was a spring for the books.

Fourth graders from all four of our elementary schools came together at the high school’s Panther Stadium to partake in a fun-filled Track & Field Day.

Spring Lake Park High School seniors were awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships thanks to the support of many individuals and organizations in our community. Financially assisting our graduates makes it possible for them to pursue further education at 4-year colleges, 2-year colleges, technical colleges and trade schools. CLASSIC MOVIE TUESDAYS SPRINGLAKEPARKSCHOOLS.ORG/CE-REGISTER Join us at the Spring Lake Park High School Fine Arts Center on the second Tuesday of each month this summer for a free matinee movie experience. Each month will feature a different Hollywood classic film from the 40s and 50s, an era filled with some of the greatest films ever made! Doors open at 10:45 a.m., movie starts at 11:00 a.m.

• June 14: Casablanca (1943) • July 12: Rear Window (1954) • August 9: Singin’ in the Rain (1952) This program is intended for an adult audience and is free for people ages 55+. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Each year builds and grows – just like our students – toward graduation day. It is ALWAYS an honor to stand before that sea of blue robes. Each graduate has their own unique story and plan. Our deepest hope for them is that they’ve learned who they are as learners, discovered a passion and purpose, and are prepared for their next step beyond Spring Lake Park High School.

This year’s graduates represent a variety of life experiences, interests and future paths. I invite you to get to know a few of them a little better in our feature on the Class of 2022 in this issue. They are an exceptional class, and we share our congratulations with each of them and cheer them on as they write their next chapter.

Despite circumstances of the last few years, like our graduates, we’ve written the next chapters in the life of our schools. This year, we made significant progress toward our vision and strategic plan through projects undertaken in our annual District Operational Plan. Thank you for helping us write the story of this and each school year at Spring Lake Park Schools. We’ll begin another chapter when a new school year begins September 6. I am SLP Panther Proud because this school has given me amazing opportunities. At SLPHS, I’ve been able to start my own club (Women for Change) and create a community around me, as well as help others by sharing my personal experiences. I am able to set an example, be a role model and connect with people!

As for my future, I’ve taken AP computer science to prepare me to go to a 4-year university, hopefully studying computer science.
