Students at Northpoint spread the love with a service project for local animal shelters. They assembled treat and toy bags, fleece blankets and other essentials for furry friends. Giving back to the community is a wonderful deed!

12 COLLEGE CREDITS BY 12TH GRADE

WINTER ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES

What does Maya know about herself at age six? She likes to eat tacos. She wants to be a ballerina. Her favorite color is blue. By the end of kindergarten as she’s turning seven? She might know that she doesn’t like working in groups.

She prefers a wobble chair (to help with concentration). She’s interested in animals and (it’s likely) she still likes tacos.

By the time Senior Dian Castro graduates from Spring Lake Park High School, she will have earned 43 college credits.

She’s on track to go to college to study engineering. Junior Hunter Mlinarcik is also earning college credits with his sights set on pursuing a career in the trades.

With six winter girls’ sports, six winter boys’ sports and 44 student-based interest clubs and co-curricular activities at Spring Lake Park High School, there were abundant opportunities this winter for students to find connection, belonging and purpose beyond the classroom. These opportunities allow students to participate and pursue excellence in their areas of interest.

A learner profile documents this kind of information – a student’s strengths, interests and needs as a learner as well as who they are as a person. It grows as they do during their time at Spring Lake Park Schools and supports them to become powerful, independent and curious learners.

In kindergarten, the profile primarily helps teachers to know a student and design engaging experiences for them.

As they grow, students take more ownership. By graduation, the goal is for each student to know their strengths, interests and needs so well they can navigate anything.

Dian and Hunter plan to take two different paths after graduation. Both are realizing an important goal at Spring Lake Park Schools by earning 12 (or more) college credits by the end of 12th grade.

It’s a goal known to Panthers as 12 by 12.

Over the past seven years, Spring Lake Park Schools has made it a priority to provide high school students with various opportunities and paths to earn college credits while in high school. Students will need at least some college level work for whatever comes next, whether they choose a 2-year or 4-year college degree or technical training and career.

Go for the gold! All Centerview students lined a path to give an official send-off with signs and waves to the USA Women’s Hockey Team as they left for the Winter Olympics from the National Sports Center in Blaine. https://flic.kr/s/ aHBqjzzPuQ After 30 incredible seasons, head Panther Boys’ Basketball Coach Guzy is set to retire after this season.

Guzy was honored at a home game where community members gathered to celebrate his coaching career.

This winter, athletes in several sports were state-bound. Boys swimming had one of their best seasons ever – placing 9th at the state meet. The math team finished the regular season second in the section and 14th overall in the state.

From the figure skating rink to the basketball court to knowledge bowl and one act play competitions, we shared our excellence and panther pride wherever we went. It was a world-class winter.

Industry leaders joined at SLPHS to discuss how school and community can partner together.

Spring Lake Park High School students will participate in a career fair, Wednesday, April 6, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the high school. Oklahoma! is making its way to the SLPHS Fine Arts Center.

With its singing cowboys and rom-com storyline, you won’t want to miss this Western musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.

PANTHERS FOR A PURPOSE SPRINGLAKEPARKSCHOOLS.ORG/GIVEBACK The Panther Foundation’s annual fundraising event returned this year with a Week of Giving and Panther Party that raised more than $128,000 to support activities and programs benefiting the students of Spring Lake Park Schools. This year, nearly all of our kindergarteners started school with a learner profile. The profile provides information about a student’s strengths, interests and needs as a learner. Teachers, students and families all have input on this profile, which will evolve as students grow. After several years of this work, we can see how profiles can be powerful tools for the learner, their families, and our teachers.

These days, chances are, some postsecondary education will be required for students regardless of the path they choose after high school. Our goal is to provide a head start with opportunities to earn 12 college credits by the end of the 12th grade. There are many paths to 12 by 12 with new options being added each year.

Beyond the classroom, athletics and activities continue to provide opportunities for students to find a spark while building relationships with others who have similar interests. This winter, we saw individuals and teams experience success and represent the Spring Lake Park Schools community with pride. Most importantly, we’ve seen dedication and a focus on excellence – whatever the outcome.

Whether you cheer from the stands, sit side by side with your child at the kitchen table, or simply support from a distance, thank you. We’re grateful for your support of our schools and the work we do together to prepare students for their futures.

By taking rigorous classes, I am learning what it takes to be successful in college and also how to manage my time properly, which will not only help me in college, but in the real world, too. In my principles of engineering class, the final project involved using the knowledge gathered from the unit to build a solar powered car using hydrogen fuel cells.

Daanish currently has sights set on applying to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to study computer or data science.

One of the most powerful takeaways we can provide as students leave Spring Lake Park Schools is knowledge gained over their K-12 experience about who they are as a learner. Given the pace of change in our world, their ability to keep learning throughout their lives will be critical to their success.

Ideally, high school students have learned a lot about themselves as learners and are applying what they know as they explore future paths. Whatever their plans may be, our intent has been to help them explore their interests through a variety of course options, pathways, and even internships and apprenticeships.

To our community: The second trimester is wrapped up, and I continue to be so proud of the work our staff have done to develop relationships and support the needs and interests of each of our students.

This doesn’t happen in isolation though. The support of parents and families is critical, and we also are continually working with people across our community to prepare students for the future.
