FIRST WEEKS FOCUS

STRENGTHENING STUDENT SUPPORTS

BUILDING THE FUTURE

The first day challenge was set. Make a name tag that can hold a pencil, stand on its own, and, of course, has your name. The first and second graders were more than up for it. The creativity, and teamwork, flowed. Names were written with each letter a different color. One name tag boldly declared, “I LIKE SHARKS.” Pencils were tucked in with chenille stems. Requirements met.

After two years of pandemic, addressing academic gaps and supporting students’ development and well-being are top of mind. The Spring Lake Park Schools Learning and Innovation team has worked to strengthen and clarify a full continuum of supports for academic and social, emotional, and behavioral growth and development. To create a more integrated approach, the team has brought curriculum and instruction together with special education and student services.

A house is rising in the parking lot of Spring Lake Park High School. More than 40 students in the new Construction Trades course are spending a few hours a day on the real-world, hands-on learning experience. Next spring, a completed one-level, two-bedroom home will be moved into our community.

The “knowing each student by name” part of Spring Lake Park Schools’ vision was on full display across schools, grade levels and classrooms. Fifth graders were making iMovies about the “top 5 things to know about me” and “I” poems to display in the hall. High school classes were playing name games. These first moments, days and weeks of school set the tone for the year to come. After two years of disrupted, pandemic learning, even more intentional efforts to build relationships and create community have been a top priority as a new year of learning begins. Read more about the first days and weeks of school and browse the photo album online.

“Unfortunately, academics and social, emotional and behavioral development and support have traditionally been separate focus areas in education,” says Hope Rahn, executive director of Learning and Innovation. “These aspects aren’t separate in kids. Each child has a unique combination of needs and strengths that we want and need to better support.” On both the academic side of the continuum and the social, emotional and behavioral side, there is a core set of instructional practices that all students experience. For students who show a need, there are also targeted, small group services as well as individual supports. Learn more about the core, targeted and individual supports online.

Thanks to those in the community who came by to “Start Your Engines” with the Panther Foundation and Community Education on September 10. Attendees enjoyed a parking lot display of big trucks, food trucks and automobiles!

High school teacher Scott Wicklund is leading the year-long project. He will be helped by many experts in the field through on-site work, tours and learning at local businesses.

The staff makes it all possible! An abundance of planning kicks off in August before school starts, and then that collective teamwork continues all year long. Some are even hitting major milestones of 20, 30 and even 40 years of service to our schools.

The goal is to expose students to different options in the trades and have some fun while also helping them find a potential career path after graduation. The Construction Trades course is part of the Technology, Engineering and Design Pathway. It will also include elements from our other two pathways at Spring Lake Park High School.

Fans packed Panther Stadium for the homecoming game on Friday, September 30 to show their Panther Pride! The high school held a pep rally to kick off the weekend of fun:

This project is sponsored by local business owner Jeremy LaBeau and the Installed Building Products Foundation. The Foundation provides young people with the skills and tools needed to get involved in the trades. Read more about the project and view progress photos online.

8.5 MILES IS THE LENGTH OF OUR DISTRICT FROM NORTH TO SOUTH

In this issue of SLP Experience, you can learn more about the first days and weeks of school. Our staff have turned our vision to action as they have purposefully taken steps to get to know each student by name, strength, interest and need. No matter the age of the student, the investment our teachers make now in knowing each student and creating a sense of community and belonging in our classrooms, sets the foundations for the learning to come. Coming into the year, we share a community focus on pandemic recovery. Academic gaps, social development and mental health concerns have been ever present in media reports and are top of mind. Our district staff, principals, and teachers are focused on meeting the needs of each child, further strengthening a full continuum of academic and social, emotional and behavior supports. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to learn more about what we are doing to support student learning and well-being. Finally, in the spirit of beginnings, you may notice a structure starting to rise from the Spring Lake Park High School parking lot off 81st Ave. This is where students in our new construction trades course are building a single-family home that will move into our community next summer. It’s the latest example of community partnership and how our career and college pathways are preparing students for their futures. New beginnings don’t just happen. They are often the result of a tremendous amount of work and support. Thank you for your support of our schools and helping make new beginnings, like this school year, possible. I look forward to cheering on our Panthers throughout the year with you! Thank you,

Jeff Ronneberg, Ed.D Superintendent, Spring Lake Park Schools

SCHOOL BOARD

I am SLP Panther Proud because I get to choose how I want to learn – I select which classes to take and which clubs to join in order to maximize my opportunities here. As I’ve gone through my own journey at Spring Lake Park High School, I’ve become more sure of myself and more in control of my own education. The staff and administrators have become my mentors and I feel that they really believe in me.
