GETTING READY FOR FIRST DAYS IN K

READY FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

The hallways hummed with the sounds of happy reunions, fist and elbow bumps and a bit of nervous energy as Spring Lake Park Schools welcomed students to a new school year in September. To students and teachers alike, it felt good to be here, at school...together.

Some came skipping. Some even ran. Some were more reluctant, a little scared or shy.

This was all brand new. It was their first time at school. It was Kinder Camp.

When seniors Will Privratsky and Emma Helgerson graduate in the spring, they will have a pretty good idea of their next steps after high school. Will has already racked up college credits – with his sights on engineering and applied math. Emma, certified in CPR and studying to become a registered nursing assistant, is well on her way to a career in healthcare.

While this school year may continue to be impacted by COVID-19, the energy at the beginning of this new year of learning is focused on transitioning out of pandemic.

The range of experiences students have had – both positive and challenging – over the last year and half means educators are taking time to understand and meet each student where they are to support next steps.

We’re off to a strong start as we accelerate learning, provide enrichment, support social and emotional well-being, and build (and re-build) community in our schools.

FALL 2021 EDITION

They came with their puppy backpacks and Velcro shoes. They sat in a circle, ate a snack and got busy playing with Play-Doh, coloring and interacting with one another. They learned where to hang their coats and how to raise their hands to ask for help. They were learning how to be kindergarteners.

In August, incoming kindergarten students attended the free, three-day Kinder Camp event where our newest students had a chance to “practice” coming to school before the first day. We started to get to know them and who they are as learners, and they got to engage in experiences designed to help them get comfortable with school. The goal was to set them up for K-12 success starting day one.

Rachel Keenan, a junior at SLPHS, won first place for her acrylic painting titled “Letting Go” in the MN-05 Congressional Art Competition.

Rachel’s artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol from October 2021 to March 2022.

We asked several staff to have a convo about what they’ve learned from the last year... what they’re proud of, how their creativity has been driven by the challenges, and more.

These students exemplify our goals for each graduate from Spring Lake Park Schools to leave their K-12 experience having mastered essential life skills, experienced college-level rigor, and gained a sense of career paths that may bring them joy and success.

Each student has the opportunity for hands-on experience as they explore potential paths through our Career and College Pathways courses. There is also an opportunity for each student to earn 12 or more college credits by the end of the 12th grade without leaving the support of their high school experience. Through these experiences and more, our seniors are getting set to soar.

At the first home football game on September 17, “unsung heroes” such as custodians, nutrition services and nursing staff were honored for their work to keep us safe, healthy and ready to learn and play.

We’ve returned to learn, and we’ve also returned to the fields, courts and theater. Seeing our Panther community reunited to cheer on our students in all their efforts – within and beyond our classrooms – fills us all with energy and optimism for the year. I hope you can make it to a school event soon.

While the last year and half have challenged us as we’ve never been challenged before, it has also inspired us to keep improving and innovating. We’ve found new ways to connect and keep learning thanks to the creativity, determination and resilience of our staff, students and families.

F or my future, I’m thinking about being a part of the medical field.

It is something I’ve always wanted to be a part of for almost my entire life and I was so thrilled to know Spring Lake Park High School offers many programs that fit my interests and that I could start my journey early on.

The OEC (Opportunities in Emergency Care) pathway not only helps me prepare for my journey in the medical field, it also teaches me so many other basic life skills as well. From communication to perseverance, kindness, bravery and so much more. The program doesn’t just teach you how to save a life, but also to be a better you.

We’ve welcomed the Class of 2034 through our doors and into their kindergarten experience. We met them at Kinder Camp in August and they came on the first day confident and ready to learn. One day, they will be like this year’s seniors kicking off the last year of their K-12 experience looking forward to the career, college and life that awaits them.

We could not do what we do each day without the support of the community that surrounds our schools. As we prepare the next generation for the world that awaits them, we are grateful for this community and all the ways we rally together to support our children.

To our community: The halls of our schools have come alive with the sweet sounds of another school year. Students are learning in-person, at school, five days a week. Despite a lingering pandemic, we are committed to safe, in-person learning this year – without disruption.

STRONG START

PANTHER PRIDE

Spring Lake Park Schools students in preschool through 12th grade have started the new school year strong. Students returned to learning 5 daysa-week, in-person at school starting September 7. The newly expanded SLP Schools Online is offering students in grades K-12 a full-time online learning option.

The Panthers have returned to competition on the field and on the courts with fall athletics in full swing. Athletes are competing in football, soccer, cross country, girl’s tennis and swimming, volleyball, and dance. Activities, interest-based groups and award-winning theater also return this fall. Spectators are welcome.
