Spring Lake Park Recreation is proud to be offering Defensive Driving Classes through the Minnesota Safety Council and taught by the retired Chief of the State Highway Patrol, Anne Beers. You will be very pleased with the quality and great learning experience of these classes. Classes are held at SLP City Hall, 1301 81st Avenue NE, Spring Lake Park. Please include your driver’s license number when registering. Limit 35. Pre-registration required. Classes fill quickly and pre-registration with payment is required. 8 hour Courses - $21.00/person - This course is required for all adults 55 and over who wish to receive a minimum discount of 10 percent on their automobile insurance. Once you have completed the eight hour course, you must take a 4 hour refresher course every 3 years to maintain your discount. Sessions: Mon. & Wed., Nov. 10 and 12; 6-10 PM

4 hour Refresher Courses - $19.00/person Every three years, you are required to take the 4 hour refresher course in order to maintain your discounted automobile insurance. Sessions: Mon., October 13; 6-10 PM Wed., December 10; 6-10 PM

Make and Take Christmas Cookie Classes Make 10 different types of Christmas cookies for a total of 120 cookies to take home! The cookie dough will be provided for each type of cookie with recipe and instructions for preparing and decorating the cookie. Participants work in pairs under staff supervision preparing one type cookie. Participants receive one dozen of each type. There will be the standard Christmas cookies and some new and different ones too! Please bring a container to hold cookies to bring home. Pre-register by 12/4 (Classes will fill prior to deadline). All the extended tours and outings offered by Spring Lake Park Recreation Department are solely planned and escorted by experienced SLP Recreation Dept. staff. We do not use an outside tour company when planning these activities. Pick up is at Spring Lake Park City Hall, 1301 81st Avenue NE only. CRANBERRY DISCOVERY CENTER TOUR With the leaves turning golden and the crispy, it’s the time of year for harvesting those beautiful red cranberries. Today, we’ll have the “Berry’ Best Tour and learn about Wisconsin’s Number 1 fruit crop, the cranberry. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry as we travel to the Cranberry Discover Center in Warrens, Wisconsin. Here you will have a guided tour of the Exhibit Hall and there will be plenty of time to visit the Taste Test Kitchens and gift shop featuring everything from cookbooks to cranberry baked goods and jams to wine! There’s also an ice cream shop. Directly across the street is “Berry Amish” a gift shop featuring cranberry collectibles and Amish-made heirlooms. After a delicious lunch at the 3 Bears Lodge with your choice of Turkey with Cranberry Dressing or Park Medallions with Cranberry for an entree, we head to Wetherby Cranberry Marsh for a guided tour and to watch them harvest cranberries, sort and package them. You’ll have lots of opportunities to buy cranberries and cranberries products throughout the trip. SWEDISH INSTITUTEA FESTIVE SWEDISH CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE Tuesday, December 9, 2014 Jul (Christmas) is the most important time of the year for many Swedes, filled with special smorgåsbord foods, Santa Lucia celebrations and a visit from tomte, Sweden’s version of Santa Claus. We’ll take you from Advent to the last plundering of the Christmas tree! The American Swedish Institute staff will discuss historic items that typical Swedish immigrants would have brought with them on their journey to the New World. Participants will get to handle all the vintage items, and will imagine walking in the shoes of Swedish immigrants with a program that’s part show-and-tell, part Antiques Roadshow, and part a walk down memory lane". Then enjoy a delicious Smörgåsbord lunch, a classic three-course Swedish buffet. You will enjoy a meal that features several traditional Swedish dishes including Swedish meatballs, gravlax (cured salmon), potatoes, rye bread with butter, beet salad, cucumber salad, dessert and a non alcoholic drink of choice. OMAHA “CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD” TOUR December 10-13, 2014 What does Omaha have to offer you say … a lot! We’ll spend three nights at the lovely Embassy Suites located in the heart of the historic Old Market district. Our visit to Omaha will include an Elegant Christmas Dinner at the Renaissance Mansion with musical entertainment by the Madrigal Christmas Singing Group, a breakfast presentation “Christmas in the Ukraine” by Olesia Reprichowskyj to include Ukrainian history, customs, traditions and humor. Get a complete detailed flyer available soon. SUNCOAST WINTER GETAWAY January 21-February 3, 2015 Remember last winter with 40 below windchills and endless snow piles? Escape! We have a great winter getaway tour planned that includes a wide range of activities! We begin by taking a non-stop flight to Orlando where our deluxe motorcoach will pick us up so we can begin our adventure right away. We’ll stay three nights at the Drury Inn and Suites Orlando taking side trips to Saint Augustine — the oldest town in America, Daytona Beach and Kennedy Space Center. As we make our way south to Weston Florida where we’ll spend three nights at the beautiful Comfort Suites, we’ll stop at John D. McArthur State Beach Park which boasts the most undeveloped stretch of ocean beach in Florida with its natural mangrove racks and estuary. From our central location in Weston, we’ll take a dinner cruise aboard the Jungle Queen Riverboat on the “New River”, visit Everglades National Park and more. We move on to the Fort Myers area stopping along “Alligator Alley” at Billie Swamp Safari for a swamp buggy and airboat ride — how many alligators can we see? We’ll spend five glorious days at the Homewood Suites (located next to the Bellflower Shops) where everyone will enjoy a two room suite with separate bedroom

and living area along with a full kitchen. Activities we’ll be doing in and around the Ft. Myers area includes: Key West Adventure (boat and Conch Train), Manatee Park, Sanabel Island touring, Flea Market and Sun Harvest Citrus Market, Broadway Palm Dinner Theater, free time with an opportunity to go deep sea fishing at an additional cost and more! We’ll go back to Orlando and Drury Inn and Suites for two more nights before flying home and unfortunately back to the cold on February 3. We’ll do additional touring for the two days prior to flying home. Transfers to and from the airport will be included in the tour along with group travel insurance and many meals. Please call Sharie for more information and to get your detailed flyer. “DESERT IN BLOOM” SOUTHWESTERN TOUR March 19-April 1, 2015 We’ll begin our tour of the southwestern U.S. with a flight into either Phoenix or Tucson where our deluxe Riley motorcoach will pick us up. We’ll spend time traveling throughout New Mexico and Arizona focusing on the desert and natural area of the states. Enjoy a visit to such places as the Desert Museum in Tucson, Pima Air and Space Museum, Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, White Sands National Monument, the “VLA” Very Large Array Radio Telescope Facility, and many more interesting and beautiful areas. We’re hoping to see the desert wildflowers in bloom but of course it’s unpredictable. This should be a great time to go to the southwest as temperatures shouldn’t be too hot. Keep in mind that this tour will feature lots of opportunities to walk through natural areas so in order to experience everything, you should plan on at least a moderate level of activity.
