t’s one of my all-time favorite movies. In the original, Billy Crystal plays the part of Mitch Robbins, a husband, father, and radio advertiser who has lost his smile. For his 39th birthday, his two best friends take him on a 600-mile cattle drive for “city slickers.” On the drive, Mitch gets paired up with the Trail Boss. Curly is one of the last of the true cowboys—a surly old guy who doesn't like city folk much. While rounding up the herd, Curly turns to Mitch and says, “Do you know what the secret of life is?"

"No, what?" says Mitch. "THIS," says Curly, holding up a leather-gloved finger. "Your finger?" says Mitch. "One thing. Just one thing," says Curly. "You stick to that and everything else don't mean nothing." "That's great," says Mitch, "but what is the one thing?" Curly says, "That's what you've got to figure out."

Curly knew what all people who have the greatest impact and the most joy discover: the secret to life is focus. What is your “one thing”? Jesus was crystal clear on his. He talked about it all the time. In fact, he really only had one sermon and shared it over and over. Jesus’ one thing was the Kingdom of God. He started his ministry by saying, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near” (Matthew 4:17). Just hours before Jesus died, the thief on the cross asked Jesus to remember him when he came into his Kingdom. Following that first Easter, Luke writes in the book of Acts, After his suffering Jesus presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). It was Jesus’ favorite topic. He even taught his disciples to pray for God’s kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. In words and with actions, Jesus did everything he could to paint a picture of what the Kingdom of God looks like. We want to follow his lead in our new series, What on Earth? Our goal is to find practical ways to make Jesus’ one thing our one thing. Once we’ve got that, nothing else matters. By Grace,

Spring Cantata ~ My Father's World “This is my Father’s world, why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King! Let the heavens ring. God reigns! Let the earth be glad.” The New Life Adult Choir, OneVoice Youth Choir, K-6th grade children's choirs, and the Lincoln Land Community College Choir will present the Spring Cantata, My Father’s World, accompanied by a full orchestra on May 7 at the 9:00am traditional service. We will be singing beautiful and exciting music from various musical styles, including selections from choral classics such as Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” exciting southern gospel music in contemporary style, as well as favorite hymn arrangements in symphonic style. CHURCH LIFE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! Please welcome these newest members to the Springfield First community. Amanda Carbiener is currently a student with the goal of working in special needs ministry. She is mom to Cameron and Abigail who attend Glenwood HS and Kaitlin and Samuel who attend Glenwood Elementary; you will see them singing in the kids’ choir. She enjoys reading. Amanda is serving as an usher, Communion server, and in GroupLife as the teacher for the KidLife Parents Class. Ryan Reed is a boiler and pressure vessel inspector for HSB Insurance and Inspection Company. Ryan was also in the Navy as a submariner. His daughter Zara attends Glenwood Elementary and sings in the choir here. Ryan enjoys video games and anything outdoors. He serves as an usher. Carolyn Fleischli is the Director of Finance at Midwest Office Supply. Her son Avery attends Columbia University in Chicago. She enjoys theater, singing, dancing, and baking cupcakes.

Mary Murphy is a certified financial planner. She has a son, Adam, who lives in Kansas City, and a daughter, Anne, who lives in Chicago. She is awaiting the arrival of her first grandchild. Mary enjoys travel, water exercising, walking, reading, and time with family and friends. Mark Nelson & Megan Hutcheson are engaged to be married in June of 2018. Mark is a program manager at Allscripts, and Megan is a sourcing manager at Memorial Medical Center. Mark and Megan met in Wisconsin where she is from but moved to Springfield where Mark is from. Mark enjoys video gaming, tennis, golf, soccer, skiing, and martial arts. Megan enjoys running, yoga, reading, serving on the board of the Springfield Junior League, and volunteering in the community and KidLife.

Katherine “Kathy” Priester is an administrative assistant at US Bank in farm management. She enjoys travel, shopping, and meeting new people. She was encouraged to attend Spa Night by her brother Herb Preister, and then took the Alpha class he taught. Kathy is serving as a greeter, Communion server, and Caring Friend. Nanette “Nan” & Robert “Bob” Reep – Nan is an accountant at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, and Bob is retired from the Illinois Department of Revenue. They have one son, Greg, and two granddaughters. Nan enjoys reading, travel, puzzles, and bridge. Bob enjoys travel and camping in their motorhome.

MISSIONS & SERVING Looking for a way to give back? Join in on on May 6-7 for a church-wide weekend of service!

We are encouraging everyone to serve somewhere in the community for a few hours. We have some options available for you to sign up to serve a local non-profit, or you can figure out your own unique way to serve others (take a meal to a sick neighbor, offer to mow someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lawn, pick up trash in your neighborhood or at a local park, etc!). MISSION GARDEN

We are looking for people who are willing to give 1-2 hours of time each week to keep the garden in repair. These volunteers will help with weeding and harvesting. If you have a couple of hours a week, we would love to have your help! Produce Deliverers We are in need of volunteers willing to take harvested produce from our Mission Garden and deliver it to Kumler Outreach. If you would be willing to take a trip every other week, please contact Chris Baughman.

SERVING OPPORTUNITIES Want to start serving but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much time? Here are 30-minute-or-less serving opportunities you can take part in before, during, or after service. We only ask that you make the commitment for 1 time a month! Greet: before or after service at one of the many doors around the building. Guest Central: greet, hand out a gift, and get to know our new guests (before or after service). Usher: pass out programs at the door before service and help with the offering during service. Connection Point: help people find the information they are looking for (before or after service). Refreshments: help make coffee or set out treats before service, or clean up after. KidLife Check-in: use our simple system to get children checked in (20 minutes prior to service and 10 minutes into service).

UP ‘N’ COMERS CLASS Featured this month is the Up ’n’ Comers Class, taught by Mary Jackson. They meet in Room 2 at 10:30am. Their study is from the United Methodist adult Bible studies. The lessons for May are God’s Preserving Love, His Sustaining Love, and His Pervasive Love. You are invited to come for a casual, comfortable atmosphere of study and fellowship.

BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP

Want to know about what Paul taught the Romans? Beginning this fall, take the opportunity to study the book of Romans through the structured format of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). BSF is a worldwide interdenominational organization of over 1,100 classes with the mission of producing a passionate commitment to Christ, His Word, and His Church. Springfield First hosts a women's class on Thursday mornings at 9:10-11:00am. A structured program for infants through kindergarteners is also available. Registration for the women's class will be on Thursday, May 4, at 9:10-11:00am, in the Community Life Center at Springfield First. Women also have the opportunity to attend a satellite group on Monday evenings at 6:30-8:00pm. A men's class is hosted by Abundant Faith Christian Center, 2525 Taylor Avenue, on Monday evenings at 6:45-8:35pm. ADVENTURE BIBLE CAMP

June 19-23 * 9:00am – 12:00pm Ages 3 through 5th grade Welcome to Maker Fun Factory! This is where kids learn they were created by God and built for a specific purpose. Through personal stories told by children living out their faith, creative snacks, fascinating science inventions, dynamic music, and interactive Bible lessons, children will discover God’s love and purpose for each of them. Are you ready for a wildly creative, inventive, interactive adventure with God? We know you are!

SERVING OPPORTUNITIES So that we can make this an awesome experience for our kids and the kids throughout our community, we need lots of volunteers! The following areas are ways you can share your time and talents: Crew Leader/Crew Assistant Lead a small group of children through each daily station. Registration/Check-in team Pass out wristbands and name tags to children as they arrive. Site Assistants Help the site leader with daily activities. Decorations Help create decorations for rooms, sanctuary, hallways, and atrium. The final ABC Work Day will be May 13 at 9:00am-3:00pm. Lunch will be provided. It’s never too late to show off your creative side! Donations Pick up a card with a specific item listed at the donation tables. We also need lots of coffee cans and lids, soup cans, paper towel tubes, and old hand tools you don’t mind being painted. Gift cards for Sam’s Club and Walmart will also be a big help.

(Birth – 5 Years) May brings the feeling of the start of summer. Warm weather, no coats, sounds of bugs and birds coming back from a cold winter, more sun, less clouds, and outdoor activities to keep us active, like camping! All ages will be going on a camping adventure throughout the month of May as we strive to learn “S’more of Jesus!”

MAY BIBLE POINTS Nursery: God made grass, flowers, trees, frogs, and bees. Toddlers: Jesus wants us to share, to tell others, to welcome others, and to work with others. Preschool: The Holy Spirit Comes, Helping Others in Need, God’s People Share, Serving the Church.

At Camp Out! kids will have a blast trekking through an outdoor adventure―minus the bug spray and lack of sleep! They’ll kindle new friendships and continue discovering that Jesus is the light of the world. Kids will experience the Bible in active, hands-on ways, and then circle up with their Cabin Crews for thought-provoking discussions to help bring them closer to understanding Jesus. Kids will run, jump, and even splash through games that connect with the weekly/monthly Bible verse. Dramatic and interactive activities will help every child remember and apply each weekly Bible Point. Kids will love ending each service with singing a fun mix of classic worship songs and brand-new praise songs. So grab your pack and let the adventure begin!

Have you ever had a moment where you knew you needed to step up? Maybe you always sat on the bench during the basketball game, and your coach finally called you in to play. Or maybe you got selected to take a really advanced course in school or an important and high-paying summer job. No matter the situation, you knew that you had two choices: either step up to the opportunity or step back and miss it altogether. While these challenges aren’t just limited to high school, we do have the chance to start becoming a step-up kind of person right now. This was exactly where a man named Joshua found himself in the Old Testament. Joshua was just a normal guy facing some really challenging circumstances. Through his story, we can learn to step up and reach the potential God has for us.
