International Underwater Film & Photo Festival Walking beneath the Sea has found in year 2018 its tenth edition. While ten years ago, this festival started as a small part of wide scientific content at International symposium “Diving AST” in the broad field of free, sport and technical diving, today it represents an event where stories of exceptional people can be heard and seen in one place. As such it deservedly bears the name “Walking beneath the Sea”. The festival has over the years developed a theme, which today represents a combination of underwater photography and film, music and children’s artworks. It is a window into our world that helps us show what we can do and spread our knowledge with everyone interested. We are still the only festival that each year includes at least one topic from the field of diving for people with disabilities. The festival has found a form that is not related to the consumer society, therefore it is not supported by any advertising. With such approach, it has become unique, not only in Europe but also in world. In ten years we hosted a number of internationally recognized underwater photographers, scientists, film makers, divers, musicians and young artists from around the world. We would like to present a bit of our history in a special edition of this electronic bulletin issued on the occasion of the 10th anniversary. With the bulletin we would like to remember all the friendships that have been established and deepened as part of the festival and thank everyone who helped in keeping “Walking beneath the Sea” alive.

13. 2. 2009 – 14. 2. 2009 House of Culture Slovenske Konjice Accompanying event of the 7th International Symposium Diving AST At the opening of the 1st International Festival “Walking beneath the Sea”, Marjan Richter, elder of underwater film and cameraman of the first underwater colour film in Adriatic region, took us for a walk into the history of the underwater film with a projection of photographs, which was inspiration for the name of the festival – Walking beneath the Sea. We have adapted the name with the permission of prof. Dušan Kuščer and Marjan Richter from the group called Račani, a group of people that in 1938 recorded the first underwater photos and who by that became pioneers of the European underwater photography. Prof. dr. Ivan Kuščer, prof. dr. Dušan Kuščer and Marjan Richter wanted to record the first underwater educational movie on 16mm called “Walking beneath the Sea” in 1952, however the camera was flooded by water and recorded footages were later on published in the book under the same name in year 1963. The first festival “Walking beneath the Sea” was initially called Belgrade after Belgrade, as the festival presented retrospective of the best films shown at the 12th Belgrade International Underwater Film Festival.

The festival “Walking beneath the Sea” was at that point still called Belgrade after Belgrade, as the second festival presented retrospective of the best films shown at the 13th Belgrade International Underwater Film Festival.
