These Alumni Can Take the Heat! New Faces for Prep’s Advancement Team

Alumni

When the Bayonne Fire Department welcomed 13 new members in June, Prep men accounted for nearly a quarter of the class! Pictured below, left to right, are newly minted firefighters Eoin Mara, ’04, Jon Kinery, ’02, Justin Hudacko, ’05, and Michael Visone, ’04.

This summer, Prep’s advancement office welcomed two new members: Kate Lillis-Magnus, director of annual giving, and Mike Murcia, ’08, director of alumni relations. Kate served as Director of Development at Saint Dominic Academy from 2008-15, overseeing all aspects of the Jersey City girls’ high school’s fundraising and outreach to alumnae, parents, and other constituents. She is also the sister of John Lillis, ’77 and Bill Lillis, ’80. Mike brings extensive experience in sales and customer service to his new role, having most recently served as a branch manager for Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Bayonne. Be sure to stop and chat with them at an upcoming Prep event. They look forward to meeting you! A few weeks later, and just a bit to the north, several Prep alumni in the Jersey City Fire Department received promotions:

Wanted: Alumni Achievers! Several times each year, Prep’s Ignatian and Sheehan Scholars meet with “Alumni Achievers,” who share their stories of life beyond Grand & Warren with some of Prep’s top students. If you’d like to join us as an Alumni Achiever, please contact Juan Arteaga, assistant dean of students, at 201-547-6442 or ArteagaJ@spprep.org

John Alston, ’78, Paul Drennan, ’84, and Steven McGill, ’83 were each promoted from Battalion Chief to Deputy Chief

Anthony Wolleon, ’02 was promoted from Firefighter to Captain.

While not an alumnus himself, Sean Verdi, P’18 is a Prep parent, not to mention the brother of Anthony Verdi, ’95 and Coach Rich Hansen. He was promoted from Captain to Battalion Chief.

We wish these (and many other) Prep men the very best as they work to keep our communities safe!

50 Years and Counting! Alan Bartolozzi, ’70 and Walter Kowal, ’70 met in 1966 as Prep freshmen, and have remained best friends for over 50 years! During their freshman year, they each purchased New York Rangers season tickets for $123 (that’s right, $3 a game!), and kept the tickets for 10 years. Although Walt traveled around the world as a U.S. Navy Officer during a 24-year career, and has lived in Virginia for many years, they continue to maintain their long-lasting friendship. Pictured at left, Alan, Walt, and Alan’s son Greg met up in Annapolis for a Navy football game. It has been an annual tradition for many years to attend one game a year. Walt’s grandsons (ages 3 and 1) were too young for this trip, but will be going to Navy games in a few years as the tradition continues. Walt and Alan are curious: how many other classmates have been friends for 50 years? Walt Kowal, ’70, Alan Bartolozzi, ’70, and Greg Bartolozzi
