WHEN DOES YOUR DOG NEED A LAWYER? You might find this headline silly — after all, it’s only in the rare case your Peaches or Petey bites someone that you would have the need to seek legal advice for your furkid, right? “Actually, estate planning is the most important thing I can think of,” says Nicole Jergovic, 2015 Top Dog Award winner for Animal Law Attorney.

ATTORNEY / ANIMAL LAW TOP DOG

NICOLE JERGOVIC

MULTNOMAH COUNTY DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

1021 SW Fourth Avenue, Room 600, Portland 503-988-3162 • www.mcda.us | Est. 1853

Philosophy/Mission: The Multnomah County District Attorney is responsible for prosecuting offenders who violate state criminal law, including crimes against animals.

Claim to Fame: Nicole Jergovic has been a Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney for over 10 years, and among her duties is coordinating the prosecution of all offenses against animals in the county, including abuse and neglect. Nicole is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in this community, and personally handles the prosecution of all serious felony offenses against animals. No one knows better than Nicole how difficult animal cruelty cases can be — forensic evidence is hard to come by, and the victims can’t speak for themselves. Despite these barriers, Nicole has earned the reputation as one of the best Deputy District Attorneys in the state when it comes to advocating for animals.

Community Involvement: Nicole volunteers with the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) and with The Pixie Project. She’s also the captain of a top fundraising team called “Paws for Justice” for OHS’s annual Doggie Dash. Nicole won the OHS Diamond Collar award in 2012.

Not your pet’s estate, of course. Yours. “Because pets and animals can’t talk, they can’t call 9-1-1 when they need help. The thing people need to deal with is to make sure they have made some care plan for their pets in the event they die or become incapacitated,” she says. But it’s not just an end-of-life issue.

What if something is not happening at that moment but you have information about an animal in dire circumstances? Jergovic says in those situations you can call police non-emergency lines.

“When people are in a crash and they’re hospitalized . . . if they have pets at home and no one’s coming for a few days, that could be very bad [for the pet],” Jergovic says. “Put something in your phone or wallet that says ‘I live at this address and I have two cats that need to be fed.’ ” she advises.

“And you don’t have to be right,” she points out. “If you think something’s suspicious and you want to do the right thing, the right thing is probably notifying somebody who can figure it out.”

As for dog bites, Jergovic says it’s important to contact authorities to make an official report, not only in case charges are filed, but if you’re on the receiving end of an attack, there’s record of it (and the offending dog).

Oregon is reportedly among the best states in the nation for animal welfare law enforcement.

In either case, Jergovic says it might be a good idea to get legal advice. “I certainly wouldn’t want to be a non-lawyer going up against a lawyer in any type of case,” she says. Legal issues involving animals also deal with cruelty and neglect. “A lot of times, people are nervous about what they should do,” Jergovic says. “If they’re witnessing abuse or neglect that’s taking place right now, they should call 9-1-1, because it’s a crime in progress.”

D 6 Spot Magazine | spotmagazine.net

“We have separate dog fighting statutes, and our animal abuse felony statutes now have teeth to them — so if you have a prior violent felony conviction and you abuse an animal at the felony level, you’re going to be facing a potential prison sentence.” Who would’ve guessed . . . a Deputy District Attorney can also be called ‘dog’s best friend.’ — Michele Coppola

Activity is needed, not optional

You’ve heard the saying: A tired dog is a good dog. While that’s usually true of canines, it’s also true that a tired dog makes for a happy owner as well. Anyone who’s ever had a dog can tell you that bored dogs tend to make trouble — all that unused physical and mental energy needs an outlet, and a daily walk sometimes isn’t enough. Dog trainers JC Calvert and Kyoko Furukawa of Zoom Room — Top Dog Award winner for Agility/Sports — say that finding activities that use your dog’s brain and body can actually be much more beneficial and rewarding for you both. “Taking a pup for a walk is invaluable,” says Calvert. “But that only provides ‘pee and poop’ time as well as reading the Dogegonian Daily News, like ‘Who peed here, A squirrel was there,’ etcetera. But a walk has the absence of mental stimulation.” Calvert believes more is needed — exercises and games that strengthen confidence and offer opportunities for a dog to learn and be praised. “Dogs and humans are immensely more the same species in mind, if not body, than most people realize,” he says.

Agility, one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the country, is a great option. Dogs sprint through an obstacle course, launch themselves over jumps, dive through tunnels, weave through poles, and more. The sport offers exercise for both dog and human, as well as requiring teamwork, quick reflexes, and best of all (for the dog) lots of opportunities to learn and be rewarded. What constitutes a reward? Calvert and Furukawa say it can be many things, and since Zoom Room’s methods are based on positive reinforcement, they’re expert at helping dog owners determine what is most rewarding for their dogs. It can be anything from treats to belly and jaw rubs to a favorite toy — whatever works is the name of the game, and the goal is for everyone to have fun. Along with agility, tricks training, obedience and a private gym are the most popular activities at Zoom Room, and those who go see a change for the better in their companions. “Their focus, their bond, and the rapport between a pup and its owner grows even stronger,” Calvert says. That, of course, is the best reward of all. — Kennedy Morgan

Melinda Miller, client outreach volunteer for Fences For Fido (FFF) approached the family in 2013 and offered them a free fence for their dog. That’s what FFF has done without judgment for six years, and later this year will unchain its 1000th canine. Unfortunately, the family said no to the fence. They didn’t feel their dog needed it. So the Lab stayed tethered — until Miller approached the family again the next year. This time, she had support for her cause in the form of Oregon House Bill 2783. Pushed by a coalition of animal welfare groups including FFF, the bill became law January 1, 2014, prohibiting the chaining of dogs for more than 10 hours at a time. It also restricts tethering, such as the yellow Lab endured, to no more than 15 hours. At first, the family didn’t believe Miller when she told them about the law. But she sent them a copy of the new statute as proof — and this past July, the yellow Lab got his fence. “While FFF will always be respectful and patient with our families, we must be reflective of the needs of our community,” says FFF founder Kelly Peterson. “To that end, we needed to elevate the standards of care, asking our families to search out ways to better meet the needs of their fourlegged family members yet not absolving our own responsibility as an organization to be there for them.” D 16 Spot Magazine | spotmagazine.net

FENCES FOR FIDO

Portland, Oregon • 503-621-9225 FencesForFido.org Est. 2009

Philosophy/Mission: Allvolunteer nonprofit Fences For Fido builds fences at no cost to free dogs from the frustration and loneliness of life at the end of the chain. They also provide every Fido with a custom-built, insulated dog house and warm bed. For some dogs, it’s the first time they’ve experienced freedom, real shelter, or even comfort. The group builds fences to allow families to form closer bonds with their dogs, extending love and care far beyond the broken chains.

Claim to Fame: Fences For Fido is six years old, and to date has already unchained and provided insulated dog houses for 1000 dogs.

Community Involvement, Special Notes: In 2013, Fences For Fido was instrumental in helping pass Oregon’s House Bill 2783, which clarifies the statewide requirements for humane care, shelter and bedding, and limits the number of hours that a dog can be tethered. This law effectively eliminates chaining as a primary means of confining a dog, and gives law enforcement a tool to better educate families about responsible pet ownership. Fences For Fido mentors individuals and organizations around the country as they unchain dogs in their own communities.

In truth, laws are a critical component to solving the overarching problem of chaining. Peterson feels that’s especially important as FFF expands to other areas.

“It has helped us reach out to more people who were perhaps simply unaware of the new law or uneasy about our offer of a free fence before the new law,” she says. “Fences For Fido is positioned to help families that are struggling to be in compliance and who want better for their four-legged family members. Bottom line, we are a resource for people and their pets.” It’s certainly a great resource as far as the dogs are concerned. On the day he was released into his newly fenced yard, the old yellow Lab in Yamhill County ran around like a puppy. “I didn’t think he’d be so happy,” admitted his once-reluctant owner. — Michele Coppola

Want A Healthier Heart? Get A Pet! Studies show that living with pets provides multiple health benefits. According to the National Institutes of Health, adults who own and walk a dog are in better shape and less likely to be obese. Pets also alleviate stress by providing an emotional support system, says the American Journal of Cardiology. The American Heart Association says that pet ownership may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Philosophy/Mission: At Home Veterinary Services’ focus is providing comfort and quality of life for pets and their people. They firmly believe in the power of the human-animal bond, and feel honored any time they are invited to witness it or be a small part of its development and care. Their mission is to help people enjoy long, fulfilling relationships with their animal companions, and to provide the highest and most personal level of veterinary care available, in the comfort of home.

Signature Service: Everyone on the team is passionate about inhome services and the benefits and convenience house calls provide. Sometimes, the stress a pet feels can influence physical exam results, and examining the pet at home can provide a better idea of his or her true condition, as seeing the pet’s environment is helpful as well. At Home Veterinary Services offers a personal, cooperative style of patient care, partnering with their clients to provide thorough and compassionate care from birth to the geriatric years. Of course, end-of-life concerns are almost always best dealt with at home, if possible, and they provide supportive and understanding assistance with hospice needs, in-home euthanasia and after care.

The Benefits of Massage It’s no secret how great a massage can make you feel. What many aren’t aware of is how great a massage can make your dog feel.

Beth Whitehouse

Therapeutic massage has actually been used on animals as a physical therapy tool for decades, but according to Top Dog winner Rubi Sullivan of Heal Northwest, there are very few conditions that can’t be helped — and in some cases healed — with regular massage.

In addition to chronic joint and musculoskeletal issues, like arthritis, massage can help reduce post-surgery inflammation, boost the immune system, and calm allergies. “Anytime you can bring a system into balance it’s a good thing,” Sullivan says. “It’s like a positive response to the pain cycle.” Your canine friend having digestive issues? A little handson care might help with that, too. “Massage helps in particular with the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the rest and relaxation part of the nervous system,” Sullivan explains. “That happy satiated feeling you get after you eat — massage can create that.” Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system

through massage has also been effective in addressing behavioral problems. “Beth and I have been working with a couple of dogs that are very reactive. It’s a scared response,” says Sullivan. “But if you can show them that they’re not going to get hurt … baby steps … increasing that relaxation response, it can be very helpful.”

Rubi Sullivan

What’s even better about massage is that it’s something pet owners can learn to do themselves at home —making it a bonding experience that benefits both pet and pet parent. But don’t expect your dog to just lie there in bliss. “Dogs are kinesthetic learners,” says Sullivan. “They learn through the process of touch. So your dog might need to get up, walk around, maybe take a water break and come back before you’re done.” Want to have the magic touch when it comes to your dog? Heal NW holds basic Massage for Dog Owners classes, teaching pet parents how to massage their own dogs at home, at various metro area locations. Details appear page D24, and at healnw.com. If you go, be sure Sullivan shows you some good chest and neck rubs, as well as how to go about “tapping the sacrum.” She says many dogs seem to especially like those techniques. Even if your dog doesn’t have physical conditions that need to be addressed through massage, the practice can still benefit your relationship with your canine. “The more hands-on you are with a dog, the more comfortable they’re going to be with you,” Sullivan says. — Michele Coppola

Salmon poisoning is a potentially fatal condition that occurs when dogs eat certain types of raw fish, including salmon, trout, lamprey, sturgeon, and others. The problem is a parasite, Neorickettsia helmonthoeca, which when ingested can spread quickly to a dog’s vital organs. If not treated, salmon poisoning is usually fatal within 2 weeks after exposure.

Here’s why Bad teeth can make your dog really sick

If you start slowly, it’s easier than you think

According to Top Dog winner Dr. Courtney Anders of Pearl Animal Hospital, poor dental hygiene can put your pet in danger of not only tooth loss, but systemic illness. “Bacteria begins turning into calcified tartar within 48 hours and you can’t brush that off,” advises the doctor. “Bacteria can also get into the bloodstream and localize anywhere. We’re talking adverse effects on the heart, the liver, and the kidneys.”

“Initially what I get is ‘Are you serious? You want me to brush my dog’s teeth every day?’” laughs Anders. “It is awkward, but if you start slowly, with just your finger and a little dog toothpaste, you can work up to it.”

If you go too long, your dog can lose teeth “If you’re just reactive to dental disease, we’re gonna end up extracting teeth,” Anders says. Those extractions are going to turn a routine cleaning into major dental surgery that will require your pet to be under anesthesia longer, which is always a risk. That’s not to mention how tooth loss affects your pet’s quality of life.

It’s WAY more expensive in the long run if you don’t Anders says that with proper daily dental care, you’ll still have to take your dog in for cleanings, but probably not as often. That can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the course of your pet’s life. “The idea is to act proactively so you’re not just responding to horrible [gum] disease,” says Anders.

Important note! Never use human toothpaste for your dog — foaming agents and other chemicals might make your mouth feel minty fresh, but not so much for animals.

Bad breath is a downer for your dog, too! “By the time you’re smelling bad breath, you’ve got something happening in there,” Anders warns. “That’s bacteria, that’s the beginnings of periodontal disease.” Once bacteria gets below the gum line, it can start to eat away at the bone — just like in humans — and left untreated can result in tooth loss. Dr. Anders says that can be especially true for older dogs. “A lot of people think it’s just their pet aging when they aren’t interested in playing anymore or become withdrawn, or they don’t want to eat or chew as much,” she says. “But actually their mouth hurts. It’s amazing how much of a difference healthy teeth can make.” — Michele Coppola
