Doula

Enlightened by seeing her nephew born in 2007 after two days of labor, West Palm Beach mom Chanice Ford began serving as a birth worker. Chanice herself labored for more than 48 hours before the arrival of her now one-year-old daughter. She says the experience was quite difficult and something that ultimately led to the launch of her own doula business, Taluli Maternity.

For You?

by shawn sherlock

“We offer mothers aid throughout their pregnancy, not just in the delivery room. So many moms already have one child and just loose energy towards the end of their pregnancy. We are here to help give support in any way we can. If you need concierge services before the delivery, we can help you. If you need help in decorating the baby’s room, we are there for you as well. The vast majority of our moms stay with us from pregnancy to post delivery,” says Chanice.

{

If you are pregnant and looking for a doula service, contact Taluli Maternity at 561-509-5011, info@talulimaternity. com. Find them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest @ TaluliMaternity and on Instagram @Taluli.

“Taluli" is Cherokee for "pregnant." My family's heritage traces back to Cherokee Indian from both my mother and father's lineage. I thought incorporating my history in a movement so dear to me was only appropriate. I wish I had a doula when I was delivering my now 1 year old daughter. I feel wonderful knowing I can be there today for moms during such a special time. I believe that every woman has the right to listen to her own body while birthing her baby. Taluli’s goal is to help create a safe and loving environment, and hold space—physically, emotionally and spiritually—for your child’s arrival,” says Chanice. Chanice began her doula studies with DONA International and is now actively pursuing certification with ProDoula. She has successfully completed LPN certification and is preparing herself for her ultimate goal of becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice for Nurse Midwifery. Chanice works with clients from Palm Beach to Martin County on a variety of doula needs.

Private Investigator by Day,

N

ew mom, Colleen Wilson, had a problem. Her beautiful newborn baby girl had reflux that caused her to spit up often, and her shiny new car seat was soon worn and stained. When Colleen heard about a store in the mall that was selling carseat covers that you could take off and wash, she knew that they were just what she needed. Upon arrival to the upscale LA boutique, sticker shock set in: they were charging $250 per cover. Defeated, Colleen left the store and decided to try to make her own.

With sewing skills passed down from her mother, Colleen went to work designing a pattern for carseat covers. After some trial and error, her cover looked better than the ones she had found in the mall. “When I put my carseat covers on, everyone was asking me where I got them. Finally, my husband told me that I needed to make business cards and start selling them,” she told us. She named her business Chubby Baby, and through wordof-mouth, her covers started selling around town.

by meg fielder

Colleen knew that she had an amazing product that people were in need of, but she wasn’t sure how to get them to the masses. Working as a private investigator, Colleen would sit in her car doing surveillance during the day, and she would listen to Martha Stuart’s radio show. One day in 2008, she decided to call-in and ask Martha for advice. Martha told Colleen about a new website called Etsy that was a marketplace for handmade items— she was sure that the site was going to be a big deal. Colleen was the first person to sell carseat covers on Etsy, and her shop has been a huge hit! Today, Colleen is still a private investigator during the day, and her husband helps her run Chubby Baby. Now a mother of three, Colleen has expanded her line to include baby girl clothes. She has a wide variety of fabrics to choose from, adorable add-ons, and she accepts custom orders. All of her products are machine washable on gentle and dryer safe on low for easy cleaning. Carseat covers start at $40, and are available at www.etsy.com/shop/ ChubbyBaby.

New beginnings can be fun, scary, or somewhere in between. We were inspired when we sat down and interviewed Palm Beach Photographer Luann Warner- Prokos, a passionate woman who took a leap of faith and changed her career path later in life.

SFM:

You have a wonderful eye for all types of photography, but you can tell newborns are your specialty.

LuAnn! We have to say, what an accomplishment. We love your work. Your newborn shots are simply gorgeous! Tell us a little bit about you. Where are you from?

LuAnn: Thank you. So much, I love everything Spotlight Families Magazine is doing. I hope that other woman listen to my story and feel inspired to jump into their passion as well. I am from Western New York.

SFM: Lovely area! I know the switch in careers for you wasn’t easy. Could you tell us a little about how you became a photographer?

LWP: Certainly. I had a successful career for years as a history teacher. I love and still keep in touch with many wonderful families I have met over the years. I always had a passion for learning photography and what I thought could be a pretty good eye. I took it upon myself to head out west and work with a very well-known photographer

Helping Moms

One Face at a Time!

{ } It’s no secret that the vast majority of women wear makeup. It is a common problem that many of us struggle with makeup removal, and we often go to bed at night with dirt still lingering. Moms, listen up! Long Island native and now Boca Raton resident, Jill Stern, has just the thing get all of your makeup off without the use of a single chemical. It’s called Makeup Eraser, and it’s taking over the faces of South Floridians!

“I

constantly struggled with taking my makeup off at night. I always felt like my face still had residue on it. I probably spent thousands of dollars on products over the years that could give me clean feeling skin. Soap and water alone just wasn’t cutting it and neither was anything else. Finally, my step-mom gave me a Makeup Eraser to try. I could not believe the results! It was amazing and so easy. You just add water and swipe across your face, and your face is left makeup free. I immediately noticed a difference, and my friends did, too. ”

© 2015 dimitriy/Dollar Photo Club

Not shortly after Jill started to use the product, she realized her love of the product could be something other women would enjoy just as she had. She says since day one, the company has been amazing to work for. It’s started out of Arizona and by 3 generations of women in one family. She loved what she was learning and soon found this was life changing and soon developing into a nice new career as a M.E. Distributor. “It really has been wonderful. The company is amazing. They have a great product, great distributor opportunities and great packaging. Since I have started with the company, I have developed an amazing team around me who are all equally passionate about the product and starting up their own business as well. It’s been empowering to work on my own time, build the team I want to build and love what I am doing. This area needs a product like this. Now we have something! We live in South Florida where it’s hot outside and moms are very active with their kids. South Florida moms love taking good care of their skin, this is the perfect product to add to your beauty regime to help you achieve a healthy and clean glow. Join the team!” Jill says the company is looking to expand their product base in the coming year. To find out more information on Makeup Eraser, you can go to their website at: www.GetMakeupEraser. com or you can contact Jill at: jstern@getmakeuperaser.com.

RUGBY

dad The Nation’s Fastest-Growing Team Sport

R

ugby is the fastest growing team sport in the U.S. for boys and girls of all ages with the 2015 Florida State Champions right here in Palm Beach County. Mark Patterson, a former semi-professional rugby player now turned youth league coach heads up the Wellington Wizards, one of South Florida’s most talked about youth sports teams. He’s a true leader determined to change the mind set of parents, kids and coaches alike when it comes to the newest Olympic sport.

“It’s been an uphill battle, man, that’s for sure, but it’s a journey that’s been very rewarding. The biggest challenge is that most parents really don’t know what rugby is all about. When they are introduced to rugby, see the benefits to their kids and what the future of rugby holds in this community, they fall in love with the sport! Rugby is not a sport, it’s a way of life." Rugby is a sport that originated in 1823 in England at a boarding school named The Rugby school. Today over 100 countries play the sport (American football originated from Rugby). The game consists of carrying, passing and kicking an egg shaped ball towards the goal of the opponent. The team with the highest score wins the match. Mark’s love for the game came from a college roommate who introduced him to the sport. Mark soon excelled on the field at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. After graduation, he continued playing in local clubs here and there, most recently with the Boca Raton Rugby Football Club. He is married to the love of his life, Bethany, and has two adorable and very athletic sons: ten-year old Jaxson and six-year-old Cooper. Mark said he knew the moment he became a father, he would love nothing more than to show his boys all about the game. Today, both his boys play under Mark’s leadership and love the game. The Wellington Wizards Youth Rugby Club has both an under 12 team for the younger kids and an under 14 boys team. In their first season the teams have soared to amazing heights and just came off a huge win as the U14 State Champs! Next year, the Wizards will be adding a High School age team. The full rugby season has just wrapped up for the 2014-2015 year. Mark and his assistant coaches are using the summer months to recruit kids and promote the sport. His biggest mission he says is to work with local high school coaches and show them how by implementing rugby practice methods into their current football routines, they can see less injury and a different side of the sport than what many assume. His goal: to have all the high school football programs across the country intertwined with rugby training. “Make no mistakes about it there are injuries in most contact sports. Like football, rugby includes the ingredients America’s sports fans and highest performing athletes love: speed, athleticism and yes, controlled contact. Yet, unlike football, rugby is played without helmets so players are taught NOT to use their heads as a weapon, nor are head-to-head collisions common, thus limiting the potential for head injuries. Many don’t realize that the risk of serious head injuries is significantly less in rugby than football. Also unlike football, rugby historically has suffered from a lack of exposure among athletes in this country. Most of the people who play rugby came to it in college, or

even later. That is changing. Rugby is the newest Olympic sport and will debut in Rio 2016. Also the Rugby World Cup will be played in San Francisco in 2018 and an American Professional Rugby league will be starting this year. I am determined to help aid in continuing the momentum and direction we are headed into.” To learn more about the Wellington Wizards Youth Rugby Team, visit their website at www.WellingtonRugby.net or contact them direct at: (561) 699-5941

BONE JOINT Health and Wellness D

espite the heat, summer can be the most fun season in South Florida. The kids are out of school, the snow birds have migrated north, and there are so many options to run, play, and have some fun. Many South Floridians spend their summer’s outdoors, hitting the beach, paddle boarding, surfing and other athletic activities. Unfortunately, sometimes these activities can lead to injury. This is where Dr. Dana R. Desser, D.O. comes in. Dr. Desser is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with five years in the Wellington area. His office is in the Center for Bone and Joint Surgery of the Palm Beaches at the corner of Southern Boulevard and State Road 7. If you are looking for an orthopaedic consultation regarding a musculoskeletal injury with a focus on non-surgical treatment options, this is what Dr. Desser specializes in. He is able to offer a second opinion to patients when faced with the difficult decision of surgery. He utilizes surgical procedures as a last resort after all other options have failed. Some treatments used to keep patients out of the operating room are: • Physical therapy • Anti-inflammatories • Injection therapies • Bracing • Ice/heat

by meg fielder

Every attempt is made to keep patients off of medications to avoid side effects. If a patient fails to heal using conservative therapies, surgical options are still available. “So many people are having operations that may be unnecessary. I want to help people get back to an active life without having to undergo surgery. I think that a lot of people don’t realize that they may have other options,” said Dr. Desser. For more information, contact Dr. Desser directly at the Center for Bone and Joint Surgery of the Palm Beaches at 561-221-1626 or go to his website www.boneandjoint.org.

At this time, Dr. Desser has started utilizing the injection of amniotic fluid, also known as stem cell therapy, to help alleviate pain and restore function to prevent the need for a surgical procedure. This is a viable option for many patients who want to stay active and stay out of the OR.

If you have an injury or are interested in injury prevention, Dr. Desser is available to work with you and discuss treatment options in depth offering non-operative alternative treatments while still providing surgical options when needed. His ideal patient is anyone who is typically 18 years or older, has a musculoskeletal injury and is interested in health, healthy activities, weight loss, and generalized wellness to prevent an injury from ever happening in the first place.

exercising, or even working in the yard, your body loses water through perspiration, and it can lead to dehydration.

Warm up and stretch prior to activity. Muscles that are warmed up before being put under a sudden stress are more likely to be able to handle the stress. Mild warm-up exercises before vigorous exertion is always recommended.

Dr. Desser has strong ties to the community. He enjoys volunteering for various organizations and nonprofit agencies in the county. He is passionate about mentoring less fortunate kids in the area. Dr. Desser also trains and mentors interns and residents in orthopaedics. When asked to share a fun fact with Spotlight readers, Dr. Desser told us that he loves James Bond movies. In his spare time, Dr. Desser enjoys running, reading, golf, and almost all other sports activities.

LOANS

(part two of a five part series) With summer upon us, it is peak home sales season. Why? With school out, families like to move during the summer. According to the website REALTOR.com, 50% of home sales occur in the summer! For many, this means taking out a loan to purchase that new home.

There are two basic categories of loans: secured and unsecured. Secured means the loan is protected by collateral, like a home loan where a lien is placed on the property called a mortgage in Florida. Unsecured means the loan is not protected by collateral, like credit cards.

ithin these two categories are many types and variations of loans beyond the scope of this article, but let’s look at the mortgage. A mortgage is an installment loan. This means the loan is repaid over time on a set schedule. For a primary residence, a thirty-year “fixed” loan is most common, meaning the interest rate cannot change. A mortgage can also be “adjustable”, meaning the interest rate can change. “Interest” is the price you pay to use the bank’s money. The higher the interest rate, the more money the

loan costs you. A typical home loan is going to include fees, which vary by lender, including origination fee, appraisal fee, credit fee, tax service fee, and similar costs of obtaining the loan. There are also late fees if you fail to pay the loan on time. Before a bank will give you a loan, they are going to look at your credit risk. This is where a good credit score will make or break you. As we discussed in Article I, to obtain and maintain an “Excellent” Credit Score (i.e., 750

or above), you must have a way to monitor and manage that Score. Due to recent advances in technology, there are DIY services that can help you monitor and manage your Credit Score; and “boost” it up. One example of such software is ScoreNavigator™. Visit www.thecreditprofessor.com to learn more. Maintaining a healthy Credit Score is a vital part of your family’s financial health. Take steps to get – and keep - your Score as high (and healthy) as possible.

Congrats! What do you think about all this? Thank you! This is amazing! I love the magazine and one day had an idea to start a magazine for kids as well. So this is super cool. I’m also super excited to go to Legoland with my family. It’s one of our favorite places to go!

Tell us a little about yourself. I go to Sunrise Park Elementary School and I am in the second grade. My family and I recently moved from Chicago here and we love it. We love the beaches, we love the parks. We have met so many new friends too. Boca is awesome!

Got any plans for this summer? What are you most looking forward to doing? Of course, I can’t wait to go to Legoland! I also can’t wait to do a lemonade stand with my sister Karly. We want to somehow also do a book sale and sell muffins as well. It’s all so we can help a local kid’s cancer charity.

We think you're something special, Karina! CONGRATS again on winning our Cover Kid Contest! Interested in your kid being on the cover of a future Spotlight Families Magazine issue? Keep checking our website at www. SpotlightFamilies.com in the coming months for the opportunity to have your child to grace the pages of our magazine!

That’s fantastic! Sounds like you’re going to be a real leader when you grow up. Tell us, what do you want to be when you get older? I want to be a marine biologist and work with dolphins. I love the ocean, sea life and working with water animals.

Well, you are in the perfect place to do just that! I understand your mom and dad are in the news business and you also love videography and reporting? Tell us about the video award you just received from the National PTA! Oh yes, it was so much fun to interview everyone. I got to do the camera work, the interviewing and wrote the script out. It was fantastic and I interviewed veterans and family members too. It was really special to me and to my family.

Inspiring indeed! And so is Mr. Hall’s resume. Tony has been training in the Martial Arts since age 9, receiving his 1st Degree Black Belt in 1997. He also served in the United Stated Marine Corps, where he earned the rank of Green Belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts System and an Honorable Discharge as a SGT. They have two budding karate lovers as well: 6 year old Mason and 3 year old Landon. Mason is now actively competing and winning awards across the state for his skills.

Call it, like father like son,” Jennifer says. “Oh we just love seeing how these two enjoy it just as much as we do. Mason reminds me so much of his dad. He is like a mini-me. It’s really special to see the two of them working together on the mat. You know though, everyone here is like family to us. You can sense that here. We all hang at the center and away. We are truly one big happy family.”

Mom Making a Difference in the

Housing Market No matter where you look these days, the real estate market is hot. However, if you’re a first time home buyer, you could be getting priced out of the market in Palm Beach. New York transplant and Illustrated Properties Realtor Salome Edgeworth has been selling luxury properties for several years here in Palm Beach County. Her new focus on more affordable options for home buyers is something she is deeply passionate about.

“T

here are so many families who make good money and want a decent home to live in. But things have changed, and it’s tough out there to find an affordable home, and one that is built with integrity. You have the serious fixer upper homes and the average family home costing well over what your first-time home buyers want to spend. A few years back, I worked with this sweet couple who had decent jobs, earned decent money, and we could not find a good match for their life. It took us over a year until we found them the perfect fit. It was what catapulted me to start this new venture,” says Salome.

Salome says her new focus is to find homes that are in disrepair, make the repairs using licensed contractors, then sell the homes. She focuses on first-time families looking to buy. She has listings spread across the area, averaging anywhere from the low $100.000’s to the high $200,000’s.

It should be an exciting and hopeful process, not a discouraging one filled with filthy showings and questionable areas.” If you are in the market and are a first-time home buyer, check out Salome’s listings at www.DelrayBeachLuxuryHomeBuyer.com or contact Salome at: 700 E Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach, Florida, (561) 847-5020.

SPECTRUM! Indoor Gym Provides a Place for Special Needs Children to PLAY

F

inding safe, fun play activities outside the home for a special needs child can be daunting. Frustrated by the lack of options available to autistic children, Gail and John Fields, whose 5 year old son Jayson is on the autism spectrum, decided to do something about it. Just over a year ago, they opened We Rock the Spectrum gym in West Boca Raton; one of the only sensory friendly gyms in the Sunshine State. WRTS is a sensory friendly gym with state of the art equipment, compassionate staff members, and a multitude of fun activities for little ones with special needs. It is stocked with equipment like trampolines and an indoor zip line with a soft “crash pit” designed to help autistic children with sensory development therapy. The gym was a dream come true for Gail. “I went through so much when my 5 year old was younger. We searched high and low for play places that he would feel comfortable in and just had no luck. It was eye opening, I saw other parents just like us struggling to find a place in which they felt like they could “fit in”. I started to research what was out there and soon found a wonderful place out West. I knew from the moment I heard about the gym, it was the perfect fit. The Franchisor/Founder Dina Kimmel was amazing from the first email to today. She is a huge part of my life, my mentor and now…my family.”

We Rock the Spectrum is a franchise that began in the San Fernando Valley, California, by Kimmel. She too faced a similar plight like that of the Fields’ with her autistic child. She transformed a bedroom into an indoor gym in her house for her autistic son, which was the impetus for the first We Rock the Spectrum. There are now over ten gyms nationwide, West Boca being one of the busiest spots. “I never realized just how well received our location would be until we opened. Every week, we gain new members. But I want to also stress not every child has developmental issues. This is the perfect spot for kids of all ages, with and without special needs. We do a ton of birthday parties. We plan to expand in the future and hopefully bring to the gym a plethora of new classes like karate, yoga and Mommy and Me classes. I know families will absolutely love what’s in store here.” We Rock the Spectrum is located in the Boca Greens Shopping Plaza at 19635 State Road 7 (Suite 46). The gym is open Monday through Thursday from 9-6, Friday from 9-5 and Saturday and Sun from 10am-6pm. Gail says the mornings are a little quieter, but once 2 p.m. hits and school lets out the gym is jam-packed, with about half typical children and the other half on the spectrum. There are a variety of classes at WRTS, a vibrant party room, and open play. Sign your child up for a free class by calling: 561-218-0128. However, you may be surprised to learn that the pace of tuition growth has actually slowed to 2.9% in 2013-2014 from 4.5% the prior year and from 8.5% the year before, according to the College Board’s most recently published data. It is important to note that there is a very wide price gap as well as price increase change from one institution to another. The cost of a public school education was $16,789 (2011-2012) including tuition, fees, room and board, while private schools were $33,716, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. When you do the math and extrapolate the percentage expected rise, the tuitions may seem incredulous. A driving factor behind the slower pace of tuition growth is improved funding from the states to higher education. Thankfully, the great recession is behind us and it is helping the state coffers. Saving for college is a big business. There are more than $200 billion in assets in 529 Plans, according to Morningstar, in the U.S. The 529 Plan is not the only option to save for your children’s higher education and know that many utilize a few of these possibilities to maintain flexibility. First and foremost parents, PLEASE, do not sacrifice your retirement savings to save for your children’s education. There are options such as grants from the colleges or universities as well as foundations and federal programs. There is also financial aid and discounts that may be offered to children. These options are not available for retirement.

Below we describe several common options and terms in the college savings area but know that many financial institutions provide these products and services so please conduct your research and consult your tax advisor for the best plan for your family.

529 College-Savings Plans? Or Qualified Tuition Plans? Common 529 College Savings Plans are flexible, tax efficient accounts that are offered by individual states to assist families in saving for college. These plans received their name from the authorization under the IRS Code, Section 529. The investments grow tax-deferred and as long as the money taken out is used for higher education, the withdrawn funds are federal income tax free. There may also be state tax benefits, depending upon where you live. The account is traditionally controlled by the parent with the beneficiary as the child that will be attending college. There is a 10% penalty for non-qualified distributions. You do not need to invest in the state where you live, although some states have residential requirements. A 529 plan should be evaluated based on state tax benefits as well as performance, fees, investment manager and investment selections. Further, it is not true that if you invest in a state 529 plan, your child must attend a state school.

Pre-paid Tuition Plans? This is a type of 529 college savings plan. These plans allow the tuition to be locked in place. These plans are typically sponsored by the states and backed by the states, as well as have residency requirements. With the market drop in 2008, many pre-paid plans closed. Make sure to review the details thoroughly as some plans can be used only at specific schools. In this plan there are a variety of college or university options as well as 2-year and 4-year programs to consider. Further, there are multiple payment options to select to fit your budget. Should an out-of-state or private school

OTHER HELPFUL SITES In October 2014, Morningstar rated the country’s largest 529 Plans: www.news.morningstar.com A helpful 529 website for the US: www.savingforcollege.com

Consider visiting this site if you reside in the state of Florida:

www.myfloridaprepaid.com/ what-we-offer be selected, funds from this plan can be used. If you receive a scholarship, a refund will be made in the amount that would have been paid to the school.

Coverdell Education Savings Plan/Education IRA? The investments grow tax-deferred and as long as the money taken out is used for higher education, the withdrawn funds are federal income tax free. The account is traditionally controlled by the parent with the beneficiary as the child that will be attending college. Control would be converted to the child at 30 years of age along with any unused funds.

Custodial Accounts (UTMA/UGMA) Uniform Gifts/Transfers to Minors Acts? These accounts offer a lot of flexibility for all expenses related to the child. In general, these accounts are in the child’s name but do not grow tax-deferred. However, there is a broad range of investment options. Many families use this structure to leverage the annual gift tax which is $14,000 per parent per year per beneficiary in 2014. The flexibility of the withdrawals has also been an attractive feature.

GerberLife? These accounts cover all expenses. It is a life insurance product (Gerber Life Insurance Company) so if the individual passes away, the beneficiary would receive the full benefit. Essentially, periodic premiums are paid and it is determined when the benefits will be paid such as in 10 years or 20 years, etc. The plan will reach maturity and the payment will be received. There are other insurance based products available to consider as well. Keep in mind that once your child enrolls successfully in their university or college of choice, they will need to visit the book-store and sky high price increases have crept into these four walls, too!

dvent Lutheran School is a Christian school that dedicates itself to nurture the whole child – heart, mind, soul and strength in partnership with the parents and the church. We believe every child is special with unique gifts, talents and challenges. To that end we offer a variety of opportunities in and out of the classroom. We have full sports and fine arts programs that serve both the beginners and the more accomplished.

Academically we offer a challenging curriculum to all of our students and then provide both remedial services and advanced enrichment for those who can benefit from them. Next year our enrichment will take on a more formal approach with activities focusing on STEM and robotics concepts. Through small group enrichment sessions students involved with SEEK will be challenged to develop hypotheses, explore options, test theories, and pursue individual interests with a teacher acting as a facilitator. By challenging each of our students at appropriate levels we are able to nurture growth and instill confidence in every student.

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

community cop corner A quarterly feature from our partners the Boca Raton Police Department! When we think of residential security, we think of all the things we can do to our home to make it more secure; adding door locks, installing alarm systems, etc. We rarely think of how valuable some of the items outside our home can be. It is not uncommon to find metal shutters, generators, and recreational equipment just lying alongside the home. Aluminum hurricane panel shutters alone are more than $40 each. Add a generator at around $700 and a kayak for almost $800 or more and it is not unreasonable to see why these items are targeted by thieves. As a result, the following are some ideas that may help you prevent these items and others like them from being stolen.

Securing Items Around Your Home • Obviously, the best method for protecting items around your home is to bring them inside. Most of us already have our garage filled to the max, but if you really check, you may be able to find just enough room. The trick is to maximize the way you use space. Bicycles can be hung from rafters simply by installing J-hooks into the beams. Be sure you hit the beam with the hook as drywall will not support the weight. Tools, sporting equipment, etc. can be hung from hooks installed along the walls. Pegboard is a great option for creating custom locations for hanging items and can be installed along the entire length of a wall. Just moving a few items from the floor should create enough room for shutters and/or a generator. • Even with great organization, some of us have reached the storage capacity in our homes. In light of this, it might be time to consider a shed. Sheds come in all sizes and shapes, from small plastic boxes to large metal structures with foundations. Whichever you think is right for you, check your local building codes and your community rules before you buy. Depending on the size of the shed and your community rules, a permit may be required or a shed may

not be allowed at all. Should you end up with a large shed with a traditional door, ensure it is equipped with a deadbolt lock with at least a 1 inch throw and equipped with a latch guard. If the shed is a smaller style that relies on a padlock, ensure the lock is a cut resistant security padlock. • If moving your items inside your home or a shed is not for you, at a minimum, you should secure your property so it cannot be easily removed. The simplest method would be to chain or cable the item to a large fixed object such as a tree or column. The object must be large enough that it cannot be easily cut and tall enough that the chain or cable cannot be lifted off of it. The chain or cable should be constructed from a large diameter hardened steel and utilize a cut resistant lock. Should you not have a tree or column to attach the chain or cable to, an eyebolt should be installed. This can be done by drilling it into a building or structure or installing one in the ground. Numerous options and methods for installing security eyebolts can be found on the Internet, depending on your situation and budget. At a minimum, the eyebolt should be completely closed, large enough in diameter that it cannot be easily cut, and permanently fixed in place. Once the eyebolt is in place used the chain/cable and lock mention above to secure the item. Items such as patio furniture can be bolted to the deck or secured with a cable, eyebolt, and lock when not in use.

• Finally, ensure that you record the serial number and a detailed description of each item of value being stored outside on your property. Photographing or videotaping the item and its serial number is a great option. If the item does not have a unique manufacturer’s serial number, you should engrave it with you driver’s license number. Never use your social security number. All documentation should be kept in a secure location, such as a safe that is bolted to the wall or floor or in a bank safety deposit box.

Moving This Summer? TIP CORNER

© 2015 tab@2 (house)/Dollar Photo Club

I

s your family looking to make a big move this summer? House hunting for your family is a fun and exciting process. Who doesn’t love visiting potential homes and envisioning where you and your family will enjoy your holiday dinners, where you will sip your morning coffee, which rooms will be best for your kids, how many can fit in the pool for future birthday parties and how those closets will accommodate your shoe collection? Before you jump online to begin your search, (as 42% of future buyers do) or gear up for a Sunday open house extravaganza, slow down, understand the process and develop a clear-cut, step-by-step plan. Ready to go? Here are your first steps:

1

Have your financial ducks in a row and know how much home you are able to purchase. Many buyers believe that they know how much they can afford to spend on their mortgage; however, until you have met with and been pre-qualified by a mortgage professional you may over or underestimate your budget. The mortgage world is different these days and while rates are still quite low, qualifications are high. A mortgage professional will take into account your current debts vs. income and determine how much

your monthly spend can be. You want to ensure that you clearly understand your home-buying budget and know with absolute certainty that you will be able to secure a mortgage before you begin your home search. In today’s competitive market, there is nothing more disappointing then finding the home of your dreams and losing it to another buyer because you are not able to support your offer with ability to close.

2

Find a Realtor with expert local knowledge. Some buyers believe that they might get a better deal on a home if they are not working with a Realtor but this is not true. Sellers typically contract a set commission percentage with the listing agent which will be paid with or without a second Realtors’ involvement. Simply put, as a buyer, it costs you nothing to have a Realtor advocating for you and whether this is your first or 15th time buying real estate you will want to have someone in your corner when it comes to not only finding the best, most fitting properties for you but also when the time comes to put in an offer, negotiate, and ensure that what you are paying will be comparably appropriate with the market. Real estate is a VERY local commodity so look for an agent who lives, works and is deeply involved in the area which you may be considering. What’s the best way to find a great Realtor to help you? Ask people who you know and trust for a personal referral or, if you are relocating to a new area, use the internet real estate sites but be sure to speak to potential agents via phone and ensure that you feel absolutely comfortable with them; know if you “click” and if they know the area inside and out. This is an important relationship, and likely one which will continue for many, many years!

SWIMMING SAFETY

It’s important anywhere you live, but I believe in Florida, it’s vital to teach your child how to swim. As a former TV reporter, I covered so many drownings. One week, I did three separate ones. It’s no surprise drowning is the number one cause of preventable deaths in young children.

F A C T

Here are some statistics from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention: About one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. Among children ages 1 to 4, most drownings occur in home swimming pools. Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies (birth defects).

F A C T

Common sense tells us watching your kids around water and teaching them how to swim is important, but so many are not fully understanding the message. Drowning is preventable. Besides supervision, let’s talk about teaching our children how to swim. Even infants can learn survival skills in the water. I know swimming lessons can be expensive. I pay $20 a class which doesn’t sound bad, but after months and even years – it adds up, so here are some ways to keep your kids safe affordably: • Look for coupons and special seasonal deals when looking for a pool to take swimming lessons. • If you have a pool, watch some youtube videos on the most effective ways to teach your child how to swim and become the teacher yourself.

• Check with your city, county or local organizations like the Drowning Prevention Coalition for free class vouchers. You can also take some other precautions outside of swimming lessons on your own. If you have a pool or live in a community with a pool, make sure the gate is secure. The latch should be high enough that a child can’t reach it without an adults help. An alarm can also be installed on the gate, so if it is opened or closed without your knowledge… you will hear it. Keep the pool clear of toys and floats. Just seeing these fun things may entice a child to enter the pool unsupervised. Parents, this one is for you - learn CPR. This is your insurance. It’s something you never want to use, but if you have to, you will be glad you have the knowledge.

Looking to rejuvenate

your skin?

A Spotlight Families Medical Segment with Dr. Anthony Dardano

L

ooking to rejuvenate your skin and not sure if injections or fillers are the right choice for you? We sat down with Spotlight Contributor and Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Dardano to hear about a revolutionary new device that is literally taking this South Florida mom community by storm. Spotlight Moms: Welcome Dr. Dardano. This pen—the SkinPen—It's all the rage right now with my mommy groups. Can you give our followers the scoop on why this is so hot right now? Dr. Dardano: “It really is remarkable. It’s perfect for those moms looking to feel better about their appearance and not sure of which route to go. The SkinPen is a micro skin treatment designed to stimulate your skin’s natural ability to repair itself. The pen creates a series of hundreds of vertical microscopic channels into the dermis (the top layer of your skin). The SkinPen uses adjustable length, disposable straight needles to penetrate at a 90-degree angle. This adjustability allows for differences in skin thickness and skin types. The vertical technology allows for extra precision and enables the device to be used anywhere on the body, even close to the eyes. It then stimulates the natural production of new collagen and elastin – producing excellent skin rejuvenation!” Spotlight: That’s fantastic! I know many options out there have some side effects. What can moms expect if they go this route?

© 2015 yeko photo studio (head); stasique (face)/Dollar Photo Club

Dr. Dardano: “Actually, there is virtually little or no downtime. Your skin will look and feel healthier. You could come in today and be back at work later in the day. It’s perfect for the mom on the go! It’s also substantially cheaper than most people would think.” Spotlight Moms: I have super sensitive skin. Will it work on me? Dr. Dardano: “Even if you have sensitive skin, you can use the SkinPen on all skin types. It treats a variety of things women- especially moms- want a little help with like: fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks and many other skin texture conditions. A great thing to add is that it can be used on all parts of the body including face, neck, décolletage, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back. This versatility makes SkinPen especially helpful when addressing acne scars on the back and stretch marks on the body.”

Spotlight Moms: Is the SkinPen safe? Dr. Dardano: “The SkinPen is the safest, most effective, vertical microneedling device on the anti aging treatment market today! Similar to mild sunburn, redness, swelling and tenderness may follow the procedure, but patients can expect no significant downtime with SkinPen. After just one day, patients may return to normal activities and are able to conceal most of the signs of treatment with makeup. Within days, there will be no evidence that any treatment was performed at all. I have heard it can be a mom’s new best friend.” Spotlight Moms: I think it will be my new best friend. So moms- here’s your quick review:

The SkinPen Advantage! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
