ncredibly, the Solheim Cup was an even more uplifting weekend for European golf than the previous instalment in Ireland two years ago. That had been a classic underdogs’ victory, scraping home against the odds. In Colorado, though, we led from start to finish and eventually crushed the Americans 18-10 for a recordbreaking margin of victory. Where previously in the competition’s history our weakness has been strength in depth, here our rookies rose gloriously to the occasion, and none more so than English teenager Charley Hull. Her insouciance in dispatching the talismanic Paula Creamer in the singles was surely the highlight of the week – and possibly the year. It is remarkable to think that she was very nearly left out of the Curtis Cup team little more than a year ago. One key to victory was surely the Saturday afternoon fourballs. Liselotte Neumann, Europe’s captain, decided to stick to the plan and rest her three most experienced players. Her American counterpart Meg Mallon, by contrast, brought back all her big guns. In the circumstances, 1½ points out of the four would have a been a very good result for the session and would have meant the two sides were level going into the singles. The result was a whitewash – in Europe’s favour. It was a crushing message to the Americans that their best players were out of form and that the European rookies were no longer scared of them. It means that, for at least a few more weeks ahead of the Walker Cup, all four team matchplay trophies remain on this side of the Atlantic. It is an amazing achievement. Looking forward to 2015 already? You are not alone...

What we’ve been talking about this month Wie’s putting We kept being told that Michelle’s stats on the greens had improved significantly. Yet she holed virtually nothing at Colorado and her ‘table top’ posture just looks weird (and bad for her back). Credit to her for her general play but it’s still sad to see such a talented young player reduced to such desperation on the greens.

Kim’s blandness

Given she had not been beaten in her first three Solheims, it was strange to see Creamer so out of sorts. On day one she looked unhappy; by the time Hull had finished with her on Sunday, she seemed resigned to her fate.

They were inspired and unexpected. Perhaps her hand was forced in as much as she had six rookies – so she simply had to put trust in her players. Were we alone in fearing the worst at the beginning of each series?

Christina Kim as a pundit? Sounds great. Or so we thought. We expected her to be a fiery presence in the Sky box alongside our own Mickey Walker. But it seemed she was determined not to upset or offend anyone. A shame.

OASTING 27 holes of impressive quality, it is sometimes hard to believe that all three of the 9-hole loops at The Kendleshire are less than 20 years old. The championship layout is spread over 260 acres in Gloucestershire’s Frome Valley, conveniently close to both Bristol and Bath. The Hollows and Ruffet nines opened in 1997. Designed by Adrian Stiff, they feature several water hazards that are often wrapped around the greens. Accordingly it is often a prudent idea to take an extra shot to lay up and leave shortiron approaches. The Peter McEvoy-designed Badminton nine opened more recently, in 2001, and further builds upon the design of its sister courses. The extra difficulty on the Badminton layout comes from a series of devilishly deceptive undulating greens, which offer a stern examination of your touch and short game. The club has been a popular host for events on the EuroPro and Jamega Tours, and was also the venue for the Gloucestershire County Championships in 2008. The adjacent accommodation at Henfield Barn, which overlooks the 2nd green, makes The Kendleshire a terrific stay and play option. Bookable through market experts Rural Retreats, this converted barn offers luxury accommodation complete with a swimming pool and Jacuzzi to ensure you are never short of entertainment and can thoroughly relax after another testing day on the links. With all three sets of nine playing to the same high quality, it is certainly worth making the most of any visit to this outstanding venue that is very well set up to provide a modern and friendly welcome to guests. James Tompkinson catches up with the 2012 Curtis Cup star “The Curtis Cup was the highlight of my amateur career. I knew I was going to turn professional before the end of last year and to win that before I turned pro was brilliant. “The biggest difference between playing amateur and professional golf is the fact that you’re playing for yourself and you’re playing for a living

– it has actually become your job rather than something that you just do as a hobby.” “I hurt my arm about three months ago and didn’t really know what was going on, so I went to see my physio and was told that I had tennis elbow. I was treated for it and went back to competing but it still wasn’t right. I went to get a cortisone injection and was told that actually I didn’t have tennis elbow and that I needed surgery on my arm. “I finished fifth in the last event that I played, but my injury has limited things and I’ve only played in two tournaments since I turned professional. But it was good to get a feel for winning money on tour. “I inspire to be like Paula

Creamer. I think she brings a lot to the game and she’s very passionate, yet she’s got that girly edge and I think that women’s golf is lacking that at the moment. “I try to find a lot of time to do other things and have a social life, just to keep balance! Being injured means I’ve had to find other things to do so – I’ve got myself a little job on the side and I’ve been doing a few golf days as well. “I’d probably bring Seve Ballesteros and his best mate Ollie to an imaginary party, just for the banter!” n Kelly Tidy is in her first professional season following an outstanding amateur career which included wins in both the British and English Amateur Championships. She also played a huge part in GB&I’s victory in the 2012 Curtis Cup at Nairn. Kelly turned professional at the end of 2012 but this year has been hampered by injury.

Boulden holds nerve to win English Strokeplay title Wales’ Amy Boulden secured an impressive win in the English Women’s Open Strokeplay Championship at Mannings Heath, Sussex. Having already won the Welsh Strokeplay Championship this year, Curtis Cup star Boulden birdied the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to beat Singapore-based Charlotte Thomas to the title. The lead had switched throughout the final day between the two players before Boulden made birdie on the first play-off hole to secure the victory. “I knew it would take a birdie to win,” said Boulden. “I have been playing well for the last few weeks and I knew I was capable of winning. But Charlotte played great golf all day and she deserved to win as much as I did,” she added.

Six for England at Girls’ Home Internationals England are the Girls’ Home Internationals champions again after winning the Stroyan Cup for the sixth year in a row at St Annes Old Links, in Lancashire. Despite a final-day defeat by Ireland, wins against Wales and Scotland proved enough to secure the victory. Gabriella Cowley (Brocket Hall) and Olivia Winning (Rotherham) were both in last year’s winning team, with the successful side completed by Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth), Sammy Fuller (Roehampton), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted), Sophie Keech (Parkstone), Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe) and Sophie Madden (West Essex). “Only two of the girls had played Home Internationals before so it’s a very good result and they really did very well,” said England team captain Chris Pascall.

How long have you been playing golf and who introduced you to the game? I started playing golf aged 5 on holiday in Portugal with my family. How is your golf at the moment and what is your handicap? My handicap is +1. Where do you play? I am a member at Sunningdale, Queenwood and Huntercombe. You have had a busy summer commentating on tennis. Which tennis player is the best golfer? The best tennis player turned golfer is definitely Scott Draper. He got his card twice on the Australasian Tour and won an event shooting 64-64 on the weekend!! Which game do you prefer to play now, tennis or golf?! Given the choice of a game of tennis or a game of golf, now I would definitely choose golf!! What are the strengths to your game? My favourite club is my driver. I would like to improve my putting.

DI MEETS... TIM HENMAN

“GIVEN THE CHOICE, I WOULD DEFINITELY CHOOSE A GAME OF GOLF, OVER TENNIS THESE DAYS” TV presenter and Lynx ambassador Di Dougherty chats to the former tennis star Tim Henman who is almost as handy with a wood as he used to be with a racket

Do you prefer inland or seaside courses and which is your favourite course? My favourite courses would be Sunningdale Old course, Kingsbarns and Pine Valley.

Justin Rose.... Probably because I bet on him to win the US Open! Justin is a great guy so many congratulations to him.

What was your best round of golf? My best round is 66 at Sunningdale (below).

Who is the most well-dressed golfer in your opinion? Adam Scott is pretty well turned out on the course.

Who is your favourite player? My favourite player to watch is

Why is golf such a great game?

8 Lady Golfer

Golf is such a good game because it’s a stationary ball and just you and the course. One day you can hit the ball well and the next you have no idea where it’s going! Do you ever get nervous playing golf? I definitely am a bit nervous when I am on the 1st tee at the Dunhill Links in Scotland. It’s the best golfing week in my year. Finally, will Europe win the next Ryder Cup at Gleneagles? Europe have dominated the Ryder Cup in recent years and skipper Paul McGinley is definitely going to keep the trophy at Gleneagles.

DI TEAMS UP WITH LYNX “I became the ambassador for Lynx last year and the brand is growing from strength to strength. We all remember Ernie Els and Fred Couples winning Majors with Lynx equipment, the company are building on that heritage and are keen to remember their history in today’s market. The company also recognises the importance of the women’s Tour and is very keen to support female British golfers. Design, style and performance are key for Lynx and their innovative ideas are clear to see in their new ranges.” lynxgolf.co.uk

THE FORM HORSES

After nine months of renovations the all-new Evian Resort GC will be ready for the game’s greats. All the tees have been modified, the fairways reworked and all the greens remodelled. They are all now firmer and bigger, allowing for six flag positions and are often protected by large water hazards or deep bunkers. The signature hole of the new-look course is the 5th. This was a blind par 4 but is now an island par 3 with a 100-yard long water hazard to be negotiated. The renovations have seen a huge undertaking with 8,000m² of lawns grown, 75,000 m² of new turf, 180 trees planted and 90,000m³ of earth and vegetation moved. The Evian Puzzle is the name given to the new finish to the course – the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th where natural landscapes will provide the perfect viewing for spectators.

Every year part of the tournament’s charm is the charity football match which has seen France legends Zinedine Zidane, Laurent Blanc and Bixente Lizarazu (and Hugh Grant) play alongside the likes of Laura Davies and Mel Reid (pictured) and various caddies. This year the match will take place on the Friday evening of the tournament week.

The top 40 on the world rankings and all winners on the LPGA Tour this year will be eligible making it an exceptionally strong field. Only the top five on the LET Order of Merit will be eligible but the 2013 winners will also be guaranteed a place in the field as will all active Evian winners. The winners of the British and US Amateurs will also be worthy of a spot, as long as they are still amateurs, so Remedy Oak’s Georgia Hall will get to play in another Major having tied with Lydia Ko at St Andrews as the low amateur. There will also be six sponsor invitations with the balance of the field filled from the current LPGA Money List. The final field will be announced on Tuesday September 3. In total there will be 120 players in the field – in the early days there were 78 players with no halfway cut.

Despite this being a new course for all there is a familiar look to the defending champion. In July 2012 – the tournament has now been moved back in the calendar – Inbee Park beat Stacy Lewis, Karrie Webb and Shanshan Feng by two shots after finishing at 17 under. The Korean will again be the star attraction, with the possibility of becoming the first professional to win four Majors in a season, and the pressure will be slightly lessened having come up short at St Andrews in August. Ai Miyazato captured the 2009 and 2011 versions while Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis are both former winners. The best four-round total belongs to Juli Inkster who was 21 under par 10 years ago. No British or Irish player has lifted the trophy in its current guise though Laura Davies won back-to-back titles in the mid 90s when it was an LET event.

COMMENT

Madeleine Winnett Why I love pro-ams, and an inspirational meeting

I

wish there were more LET events in this country because I have just had a great day – and, being a greedy sort of person, I would like more of them! I love playing in pro-ams with the touring pros, and since the LET adopted the LPGA policy of playing nine holes with one pro, and nine with another, I got two for the price of one at the ISPS Handa Ladies’ European Masters at The Buckinghamshire. My front nine – which happened to start on the 10th, but was in fact the real 1st since they reversed the 9s for the tournament – took me at least five holes to get used to, since I told my rangefinder I was on the 10th and couldn’t understand why I had got upwards of 800 yards to that hole and even more distance to the next four after that! I also started spectacularly well by knocking it to 10 feet for what should have been a quick-fire birdie to set me on my way, before proceeding to four putt! The greens were a little slicker than I had anticipated! What was slightly more familiar was driving off alongside Melissa Reid and her caddy-cum-comedian, Olly. As I had only played with them a few weeks earlier at St Andrews, it felt more like a regular Sunday morning fourball. The wisecracks were never far away, or the easy smile, and as Mel is such a good ball striker, she is always a pleasure to watch. I would also like her ability to hole out from five feet with regular monotony. My experience of pro-ams is that they usually take around 12 Lady Golfer

Great fun The ISPS Handa event at the Bucks was a blast

five-and-a-half hours, but as we were first out, we virtually skipped round the front nine and all too soon we met up with our second pro, Becky Brewerton. This, to me, was particularly pleasing because I had been trying to wangle a game with Becky for the last three years, and had failed miserably. This time I didn’t put in any special requests for her, and magically it just happened. Several years ago I watched Becky playing at a tournament and was hugely impressed

with her swing, immediately understanding how she gained the moniker of ‘BMW’ (the ultimate driving machine’!) Although she is going through a few swing changes at the moment, Becky in full flow is still a joy to behold. She also reminded me that I never want to turn pro. With a start time of 7.10am for the first round of the tournament, her words of “I hate having to get up at any time starting with a 4 in it” were completely incomprehensible to someone who balks at the thought of a tee time with a 9 in it! After the tournament finished, she was then going to drive for seven-and-a-half hours to Scotland to tee it up the next morning at Kingsbarns for final qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open. I freely admit it. I’m a wimp. I couldn’t cope with one week like that, never mind a season. A life of self-professed laziness

suits me just fine. In fact, if reincarnation exists, I was probably a sloth in a former life. Being in awe of the pros wasn’t the only highlight of my round. Another member of my team was the truly inspirational Caroline Larsson. Two years ago, Caroline, a professional herself, was caddying for her sister, Louise, at the New Zealand Women’s Open when the earthquake hit Christchurch. The pair were lunching at a restaurant, which was one of only five buildings left standing as the earthquake flattened those around them and killed 182 people. After surviving that neardeath experience, a month later Caroline then had to have her leg amputated when it was discovered she had bone cancer. That would have devastated most people, but only a week after the operation, she was swinging a www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

LG pp 12-13 Columnist Mad Win 23/08/2013 12:27 Page 13

club inside the hospital, and after another week, she was back on the course, with her sister holding her hips, just in case she should fall. Having Googled Caroline before we met, I was already bowled over by what I had seen. Her videos are so inspirational. Her mother’s response was entirely understandable when she expressed a wish that it could have been her, rather than her daughter who had lost the leg. Caroline’s response summed her up perfectly: “But mum, you wouldn’t have coped. And I have, so it’s fine.” She genuinely believes that her life is better now and it has given her so many opportunities that she never had before. It is a complete misnomer to call her disabled. She is just differently abled. There is no ‘smulch’ when she says, “What has cancer taken from me? Nothing! I wanted to play golf again, and I am. I wanted to ride again, and I am.” She isn’t just playing golf again, by the way. She currently plays off 1.8, wants to get back playing on tour again, and can hit shots that quite frankly, left me standing! There was no pun intended when I wrote that, but it seems so perfectly apt now, I shall leave it! Although it was a hot day so we were all wearing shorts, and therefore Caroline’s amazingly engineered prosthetic leg was permanently and visibly on display, I can genuinely say that after the first few holes, I completely forgot that she www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

wasn’t just like the rest of us. But then as Becky and I sat eating and chatting with her afterwards, it became patently clear just how different she really is. She is far happier, far more grateful, far more positive and far more appreciative of her life than anyone else I have ever met!

Thanks to Thurlestone Rather than an amusing quip here, I am going to take this opportunity to thank Thurlestone GC for making my mother’s holiday. For the last 40 years, family Winnett have tripped down to South Devon for their annual vacation, and part of the joy is walking across the golf course to enjoy the stunning views. Unfortunately my little old cripply mother – who isn’t too little, old or cripply to give me a clip round the ear – couldn’t walk far enough to enjoy her favourite views over Bantham and across to Burgh island. Happily, though, the pro let me whisk my delighted mother up to the top of the course in a buggy!

SOLHEIM CUP REVIEW

History

The reasons behind Europe’s magnificent record-breaking victory by Mark Townsend

1

3

The

Girls

EUROPE SUPERIOR THROUGHOUT

It is tough to win away; even the Americans have only done it twice. Having never done it before Europe then recorded the biggest winning margin in the history of the competition. You don’t do that by merely ‘holing more putts’, you win by a margin of eight points by having the strongest and deepest team, by outplaying your opponents from tee to green and by getting your pairings (and wildcards) absolutely spot on. Everybody contributed at least half a point, only one player was required to play in every session – and there was no way that Caroline Hedwall was going to be left out. And yes, we did putt better. People will point to an overflattering scoreline in the months to come, in truth it really wasn’t.

2

THE EMPHASIS WAS ON FUN

When we spoke to Lotta Neumann at the start of this year the word that kept being repeated was ‘fun’. Generally players play their best when they are most relaxed and huge efforts were put in behind the scenes to ensure this happened. In February the captain was putting together a play list for the team bus. Six months later that play list was the backdrop for the Spaniards to put on a display of their native dancing in the aisles of the bus on the way back to the hotel after a successful opening day. We’ll never know the half of what goes on behind the scenes but, judging by what happened out on the course, the captain and all her helpers got it spot on. Let’s hope that captain Neumann agrees to another term in office.

WE ROLLED WITH THE PUNCHES

Every Solheim Cup there will be a spark of controversy and it came on the first afternoon when Carlota Ciganda was given an incorrect drop after an insufferable 27-minute wait at the 15th. The key is how to react to such annoyances. What should be remembered is the brilliant pitch and putt by the Spaniard while the Americans didn’t win another hole all day. Their noses were again put out of joint when Jodi EwartShadoff’s caddy conceded a putt just as Paula Creamer was about to hit. It was wrong, untimely and equally as uncomfortable for the Europeans but they were immediately back among the birdies. This time the European focus was perfect and the will to win too much.

4

THE ROOKIES WERE OUTSTANDING

This was the fifth time in Solheim Cup history that the team with more rookies has won the cup, it also happened in 1994, 2000, 2007 and 2011. Alison Nicholas used three of her four picks to include newcomers, as did Neumann despite already having two in the side. The six European rookies posted a combined 12-5-2 record this week compared to a 2-7-4 record from the four US rookies. There seems to be some perceived wisdom that if you haven’t been there before then there is a good chance that you will disintegrate. True, the first match is tremendously stressful, Jessica Korda was sick halfway down her 1st fairway, but the second time around is far more pleasant. Ask Hull, EwartShadoff or Ciganda.

LG pp 14-15 Solheim Review 23/08/2013 14:40 Page 15

5

CLINICAL AT THE BUSINESS END

Of the matches that went to the last three holes Europe won 17 of them, the United States just 10. Anna Nordqvist closed out the Saturday morning foursomes with the first ever ace and the others followed in almost as clinical fashion. While the Swede’s shot was the closest at the penultimate hole, Hull’s follow up inside Thompson’s tee shot to six feet was maybe the shot of the three days. Thompson then missed, Charley holed. At the closing hole all the birdies came from the Europeans: Matthew and Masson in the foursomes, Ciganda and then Icher in the fourballs and both Sergas and Hedwall in the singles. When it really mattered the most adjacent approaches and nerveless putts came from the visitors.

6

THE AMERICANS ARE NOT THAT GOOD

To take nothing away from the European effort this was not the best American team, either on paper or out on the course. In the past we have had to deal with multiple Major champions and LPGA winners, this year only Stacy Lewis and Cristie Kerr have won. Salas, Piller, Lang, Pressel, Wie, Korda and Thompson have just seven LPGA wins between them and Lincicome and Creamer haven’t been in the winner’s circle for two and three years respectively. Thanks to the Asian dominance and events at Killeen Castle there is less of the stargazing and inferiority complexes that might have existed in years gone by. Only Lewis is inside the world’s top 10 and the average ranking is 32 for the Americans and 40 for the Europeans – and that includes Hull’s lowly position of 147th.

7

HEDWALL IS SOMETHING ELSE

When the two teams were introduced at St Andrews the Americans, generally speaking, were the louder and the Europeans more understated and slightly embarrassed. One player entered the room with a look that wasn’t embarrassed or sheepish – even two weeks before the start of the matches Caroline Hedwall had the look of meaning business. The Swede is made for this arena. At Killeen Castle her first two matches were done by the 14th, on the Sunday she snatched a crucial half winning the last two holes. With the heat in Denver, a vast walking course and the cut and thrust of the biggest week of the year nobody else was trusted with five matches. The 24-year-old did, her final hole was a birdie and she won the lot, something that has never been done before.

CHARLEY WAS A LAW UNTO HERSELF

Where to start? Charley Hull is still eligible to play in the Junior Solheim Cup, last year she was part of the winning Curtis Cup side in Scotland. This year she became the youngest player ever to play in a Soheim Cup and she very quickly integrated herself into the team, both with her play and her unaffected charms. On the 1st tee of her first Solheim match, in the key second singles match out, she shook hands with her opponent Creamer and said: “You look nice today.” Then, having dished out a 5&4 battering, she asked the American to autograph her ball for a friend. The competition has thrown up all sorts over the years, this was something else altogether. The Americans can expect to see a lot more of Hull over the coming years and this was the perfect introduction.

SOLHEIM CUP REVIEW

How they

rated

Mark Townsend runs the rule over all 24 players in the historic 2013 Solheim Cup

EUROPE CARLOTA CIGANDA

A-

(W3-H0-L0) She owes Pettersen a drink after getting her through the first day when she only contributed twice but, by the finish, was flying. Took down Pressel in some style and finished with five straight birdies.

JODI EWART-SHADOFF

B+

(2-0-1) Like Ciganda started in understandably nervy fashion but her win with Hull against Creamer and Thompson began the fourball whitewash. Added a singles win and a genuine star of the future.

CAROLINE HEDWALL

A+

(5-0-0) What can you say about the only player ever to win five matches? She loves a battle, four of her wins came at the 17th or 18th, and she now has 7.5 points from just nine outings. Quite brilliant.

16 Lady Golfer

CHARLEY HULL

A

(2-0-1) Six birdies on Saturday and six more in just 14 holes to crush Creamer in the singles. Supposedly she doesn’t get nervous and, given the evidence, you would have to believe her. Incredible debut.

KARINE ICHER

B+

(2-1-1) Her debut came in 2002, her second outing was worth the wait. Her putting stroke is a thing of beauty and never more so than when she holed from 45 feet to see off Kerr and Pressel on Staurday night.

CATRIONA MATTHEW

B-

(0-2-2) Unthinkable that Beany would add one point to a total of 18. Shouldn’t be underestimated how she always willingly pairs up with rookies and fitting that she was the player to hole THAT winning putt.

CAROLINE MASSON

B+

(2-1-1) Expect to see her back with Hedwall in the foursomes in Germany after their two wins. Her approach to the 18th (and half with Matthew) on Saturday was crucial in keeping Europe in the lead.

AZAHARA MUNOZ

B

(2-0-2) Just her second Solheim but already part of the furniture. Eyebrows were raised when she was paired with Icher in the opening foursomes, by lunch they had beaten the potent Kerr and Creamer.

BEATRIZ RECARI

A

(3-0-1) Seemed to roll in more putts than anyone and seemed made for the cup with her rock-solid efforts. Her singles with Stanford might not have mattered too much but you wouldn’t have known it.

ANNA NORDQVIST

A-

(2-1-1) Will always be remembered as the first player to hole in one in the competition and likely the last player to close out the match in such a style. Led Europe off three times, all with perfect tee shots.

SUZANN PETTERSEN

A

(2-1-1) For all the talk of others ‘Tutta’ remains the star of the Euro show. Dragged Ciganda over the line on day one and would likely have won her singles if her match was still important. Now has 17 Solheim points.

GIULIA SERGAS

B-

(0-1-1) There wasn’t a more popular half point than the Italian’s after having to sit out Saturday. Came out fighting in the singles and her closing birdie against Korda meant all 12 players had contributed.

USA PAULA CREAMER

C

(W1-H0-L3) The golden girl of the Solheim Cup was repeatedly upstaged and signed off with a second straight singles thrashing, this time against Hull. Holed putts but not when it mattered most.

CRISTIE KERR

C+

(1-1-2) Seemed a waste to have her at No 12 in the singles but that maybe said more about her form (and disposition). Lost on the first morning which set the tone for another forgettable experience.

B-

JESSICA KORDA

(1-1-2) Not many players can claim to have been sick on the 1st hole of their debut and then go on to win. Two 17th hole defeats on Saturday and then undone by Sergas’ late birdie but plenty of positives.

BRITTANY LANG

A-

(3-0-1) Only just sneaked into the team but was America’s star player and disappointed to not play in all five sessions. Very nearly holed in one, hit a variety of approaches close and gave little away.

STACY LEWIS

C+

(1-1-2) A lot was expected of the game’s most recent Major champion and she lost her first two games. To her credit she rallied alongside Creamer and then held Nordqvist to a half despite not being at her best.

BRITTANY LINCICOME

B-

(1-1-1) Won comfortably with Lang in the first fourballs but then just featured in the following day’s foursomes? Could have opened with two wins but missed a shortish par putt at the penultimate hole.

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

GERINA PILLER

C+

(0-1-2) Not helped by being partnered by Stanford where she was the better player. She then led for 14 holes and was never behind against Matthew and will, in time, look back on her half as something to be proud of.

MORGAN PRESSEL

C

(1-0-3) Her record was 7-2-2 coming in, she departed with one win from four. It began well with Korda but then went into reverse and finished looking down the barrel of Ciganda’s gun where her steady pars were brushed aside.

LIZETTE SALAS

C+

(0-2-1) Sent out in the opening match and did little wrong beside a struggling Lewis. Matthew’s closing birdie prevented a first win on Saturday and kept Pettersen at bay, holing putt after putt from inside 10 feet.

E

(0-0-4) Has now lost her last seven matches and bizarre that she played in four this time. Paired with fellow Texan Piller who she once mentored, this week she was unable to provide much help.

LEXI THOMPSON

B-

(1-0-2) The new Bubba, teeing off in among all the noise. Paired with Lewis and Thompson she was the stronger force in both defeats and got her reward with her singles point – only one of two Sunday Ws.

MICHELLE WIE

B

(2-0-2) Some questioned her inclusion, only Lang scored more. Two opening wins before two losses to Hedwall. Still doubts over her new and unique putting style.

SOLHEIM CUP REVIEW

Mickey Walker The Solheim Cup was a week I will never forget

W

ow! Everyone who was at the Solheim Cup will feel that they were part of something very special. We saw Europe’s firstever win on American soil, by the record margin of 18 points to 10, Caroline Hedwall’s maximum five points, and witnessed the youngest ever Solheim Cup competitor, England’s Charley Hull, who absolutely blew everyone away with the standard of her play and refreshing attitude. Before the matches began, I thought that we had our bestever chance to win in America, but never in my wildest dreams did I envisage the manner and margin of our victory. With six rookies and three of our other players only having played on one previous occasion, no-one could predict how the majority of the team would play, especially when in America and playing in front of very partisan and extremely noisy crowds. Well, it didn’t take us long to find out! After a good start taking a lead in Friday morning’s foursomes 3-1, the top match in the fourballs was filled with controversy when it took the match officials 27 minutes to give Carlota Ciganda a ruling on where to drop from a lateral water hazard on the 15th. This caused the next two fourballs to be backed up and play to come to a standstill. What was even more baffling was that the ruling subsequently turned out to be incorrect. This prompted much heated discussion after the finish of the match with the officials making a public apology for having given a wrong ruling. 18 Lady Golfer

Spanish passion Ciganda never gave up

Carlota played a wonderful shot from hard, sandy, desertlike rough onto the edge of the green and then proceeded to hole the putt for one of the best pars I’ve ever seen! Carlota and Suzann Pettersen’s opponents, Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis, who had previously given themselves two birdie putts, inevitably missed them for the match to remain all square. Europe then won the 16th and hung on to give Europe an overall lead of 5-3. On Saturday morning Europe battled valiantly to win 1 ½ points, the highlight being the first-ever Solheim Cup hole-inone by Anna Nordqvist on the 17th to secure a point for Europe against Michelle Wie and Jessica Korda so we took a slender one-point lead into the afternoon fourballs. With Colorado being extremely hilly and a difficult walking course, at 6,000 feet above sea level and the

temperatures a searing 90˚plus, Lotta Neumann took the brave decision to rest her three top players – Pettersen, Catriona Matthew and Nordqvist. This meant that the final fourball matches had a total of five European rookies playing. The European fans were worried, and Meg Mallon and the American fans sensed that this was their chance to put points on the board. Well, what followed was an historic whitewash, spearheaded by Hull and Jodi Ewart Shadoff, who between them had 10 birdies against the shellshocked pairing of Paula Creamer and Jessica Korda, who themselves had eight birdies! Match after match swung Europe’s way, culminating with Karine Icher’s magnificent downhill 30-foot put on the 18th. During that final match another water hazard ruling, this time on the 16th, took

even longer than Carlota Ciganda’s the day before. During this the fans started singing “while we are young” the catchphrase from a USGA campaign aimed at speeding up play! Too many people got involved with both rulings and the officials weren’t strong enough dealing with the situations. On the final day Meg Mallon drew on everything to inspire her players, including prayers on Sunday morning and an inspirational speech from Ben Crenshaw, one of the codesigners of the magnificent Colorado Golf Club. He was also of course captain of the American Ryder Cup team who defeated Europe at Brookline in 1999 when the Americans went into the singles four points behind. The wonderful thing was that she never stopped trying and never let her head go down. However, nothing was going to stop the inevitable European www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

victory with an underperforming American team. In contrast, the European team was full of stars about who I could write reams about. It seems a little unfair in the circumstances, but I have to mention Hedwall’s magnificent performance in becoming the first ever player in Solheim Cup history to win all five of her matches. Caroline’s play was inspirational and reminded me of Seve at his best,

making the putts that mattered and being a true inspiration to the Europeans. Carlota Ciganda was also unbeaten in the three matches that she played. On the first day Carlota visited parts of the course that not even the spectators behind the ropes had visited! After that, Carlota’s play got better culminating in her best performance in the singles when she convincingly beat Morgan Pressel in the singles.

A PROPER CHARLEY I must mention Charley Hull, who everyone fell in love with during the week. Charley was like a breath of fresh air, and not just because of how she plays the game. Having said that, she doesn’t appear to have a weakness in her game: she hits it a long way, can be pinpoint accurate with her irons and putts brilliantly. What I love about her game though is the creativity and the ability that she has to shape the ball both ways and see shots that others don’t. She has an innocence about her that is charming – www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

thanking her caddy, Mark Wallington, for his help on every shot. While some players spent an age working out a line on the greens or what shot to hit, Charley just went up and hit her ball or putt with the minimum amount of fuss. One of my friends watching everything at home on TV summed it up beautifully when he said that Charley is everyone’s darling.

OBODY could ever say that Stacy Lewis didn’t earn her second Major. The 28-year-old’s opening round on Thursday began with a 4.30am alarm call, something that was repeated on the Sunday when 36 holes had to be completed after Saturday’s high winds. On the course the American also did it the hard way – the conventional wisdom is to prosper on the Old Course’s front nine and then try and hold your score together. On day one Lewis came home in 31 for a 67, on Sunday she birdied her last two holes for a two-shot win.

20 Lady Golfer

She also became the first non-Asian winner of a Major since the Kraft Nabisco in 2011, the scene of her first victory. The shot that will be repeated in the years to come will be her approach to the Road Hole 17th, the hardest hole on the course and somewhere where par will see you gain half a shot on the field. Lewis didn’t know the distance to the pin, only the one to the front (160 yards) of the green and the flight of the shot required. Her low, chasing, drawn 5-iron was a thing of beauty – and the three-feet birdie putt a mere formality. To finish the World No 2

PARK COMES UP SHORT FOR ONCE All the talk at the start of the week was over whether Inbee Park could become the first player to win four professional Majors in one season. The Korean began in spectacular fashion with six birdies in the first 10 holes before the unlikely bid finally came up shy. “I never thought I would experience where I go for four Majors in a row and everybody is watching me. It has all felt a little bit weird. I get to do interview even if I shot a 6over. Just everything about this tournament is new for me.”

recalled a similar putt from the 2008 Curtis Cup, a week in which she became the first player ever to win all five matches and a week in which she played the course no less than 11 times. Most leave the putt short thinking it is downhill, Lewis produced a perfect pace and rolled the 20-footer in. With six holes to play Na Yeon Choi held a three-shot lead and looked set for a second Major. But back-to-back bogeys, while Lewis was making a birdie at the Road Hole, left the World No 4 needing a birdie. Instead she made bogey at 17. Suzann Pettersen will have left

Scotland with mixed emotions. On the upside the World No 3 finally looked comfortable on the links (Pettersen’s best finish had previously been a tie for 14th in 11 WBOs), on the downside the putts again failed to drop when it mattered. It is now over six years since the Norwegian claimed her sole Major success, in which

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

time she has collected 11 top10 finishes. The other notable European assault came from, predictably, Catriona Matthew. The Scot looked to be out of things at level par before amassing four birdies and a pitch-in eagle at the 18th in her delayed third round. But the home hopes were as quickly dashed as they were raised when the 2009 champion quadrupled the 5th en route to a 78. Third-round leader Morgan Pressel was another to finally unlock the two ingredients to links golf – shotmaking and patience – but her bid to add a second Major came unstuck

HALL SHARES AMATEUR HONOURS Remedy Oak’s Georgia (above) Hall and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko shared the Smyth Salver Medal for the leading amateur though Hall missed out on the prizegiving. The 17-year-old was told that she had missed out on a countback so left for the airport only to receive a phone call asking her to return, by which time it was too late. Hall, who won the British Amateur this year, had actually threatened the lead on Friday, reaching six under before slipping back to eventually finish at plus six. Ko also won the low amateur last year.

in the final round where the birdies finally dried up. And the bogeys, of which there had only been one in the first 50 holes, began to appear on a too regular basis. It took a certain type of character to win here and Lewis fitted the bill perfectly. Diagnosed with scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, at just 11 the Texan had to wear a back brace for 18 hours a day for over seven years, only taking it off to play golf. Then, just 18, she was told she would need surgery to place a titanium rod and five screws into her back. It would take more than an early alarm call to throw Lewis off her stride.

TRAVEL

GUIDE Now is the time to book your winter golf break – and we have 20 pages of ideas to help you decide where to go…

North America For the experience of a lifetime, head to the States on your next golfing trip

A

MERICA is home to over half the world’s golf courses, and many of its finest. Beyond this, the attractions for UK golfers are manifold: English is spoken, direct flights are common, there’s warm weather year round and even with the pound languishing against the dollar, it still offers good value for money. The Department of Homeland Security is addressing its reputation for, let’s say, sternness at border controls, but once through customs nowhere on earth will give you a warmer welcome. The sheer scale of America makes fly/drive holidays a particularly good option, especially if you are hoping to

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

visit a few courses. Roads are excellent – wide and well signed – car rental is easy and good value, plus petrol costs 75 per cent less than in the UK. You must be over 25 to rent a car and will need both parts of your driving license. Note that Sat Nav doesn’t come as standard and might be worth the extra investment if you’re planning a road trip. With such diversity and a glut of good courses, it’s difficult to narrow recommendations, but we have chosen four distinct destinations of note.

CALIFORNIA The state of California is almost 800 miles long, ranging from the cool, forested north bordering Oregon, to the hot,

south where San Diego meets Mexico. Highlights include Passatiempo Golf Club, designed by the great Dr Alister MacKenzie, Cypress Point, another MacKenzie masterpiece, Pebble Beach, Jack Nicklaus’ favourite course, and Spyglass Hill, arguably the toughest course on the Monterrey Peninsula. Flight Time: 11 hours

ARIZONA The area around Scottsdale to the north east of Phoenix is synonymous with desert golf, dramatic landscapes and mild winter climates. It is possible to combine a trip to Arizona with Palm Springs and Las Vegas for a multi-centre holiday. Flight Time: 11 hours

FLORIDA The home of resort golf. Fly direct to Orlando and you can be teeing off the same day. Florida has world-class courses in Sawgrass, Doral and Pine Barrens at World Woods. Flight Time: 9 hours

THE CAROLINAS The Carolinas share the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains and a meandering, unspoilt coastline. North Carolina’s Pinehurst No. 2, next June's US Open venue, takes top billing followed by the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, an amazing links. If you want a HQ, you could stay in Myrtle Beach for two months and not play the same course twice. Flight Time: 9 hours

ou certainly can’t improve on the description given to Mauritius by Mark Twain. “You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven was copied after Mauritius,” wrote the fabled American author. Clear the grounds of the airport – a gloriously hassle-free experience in itself, despite it having echoes of a bygone age with a feeling or goodnatured chaos – and you are immediately surrounded by breathtaking scenes. These can be either classic beach views or panoramas inland to lush green forests. Dotted on this idyllic landscape are a collection of luxury hotels which, square mile for square mile, must rival anywhere else in the world. Grouped in little pockets at various points on the island’s coast, at times you cannot travel for more than a minute without driving past an entrance to a chic resort. British holidaymakers make up a good proportion of visitors to Mauritius, returning year after year (estimated at 100,000 annually) to enjoy more hot sun, crystal-clear sea, gorgeous white sand and first-class service. The latter is an under-rated aspect of the island’s attractions. Its population’s multicultural mix combine to give Mauritians the perfect temperament for hotel staff; easy-going, friendly and achingly keen to help. The British have been on Mauritius for centuries in fact and remnants of the colonial era remain in the tea plantations. The link extends to golf. In 1902 Royal Navy officers formed the Gymkhana Golf Club. It remains today and their course not surprisingly offers the best value on the island. You also get to lap up the atmosphere of their clubhouse, which is eerily reminiscent of a British pub. It’s certainly worth a tour inland to play (it’s near Vacoas) and break up the regular fun you will be having on your resort’s course. www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

N a word: convenience. That's why British golfers started flocking to Turkey a few years ago and have been returning ever since. Winter Sun, for many of us golfers, needs to revolve around simplicity. We've only got a few days to get our fix and we want to spend as much time as possible on the course and be able to enjoy ourselves afterwards. The stretch of land extending west from Antalya, which is on Turkey's south coast, stretches for miles and includes little that is not either a luxury resort or a golf course. All these resorts offer transfers to the other courses and it means you can be on the 1st tee within minutes of leaving your hotel reception. Once you're finished, simply wander into the clubhouse or sit outside and enjoy a relaxing drink – you won't need a designated driver as a minibus will whisk you back to your resort once you're ready. Golf is a very new sport in Turkey and they have several factors in their favour. One is certainly the economic factor of not being in the Euro. Iberian resorts simply can’t or

won’t compete on price. Another is the wonderful climate that the south-coast region of Belek enjoys. More than anything else, though, the golf is excellent. Many of the 14 courses in the Belek golfing hotspot (in fact, there are only 20 courses in the whole of Turkey) are quite literally built on sand – and that’s one reason why they play so well. Quick draining and firm, the conditioning is generally excellent so you can anticipate some crisp iron striking and putting on some quick and true surfaces. In my experience, the conditioning of the courses in Turkey is outstanding – and that is something that cannot always be said in the Algarve, for example.

PERFECT PACKAGE Alternative Turkey provide high quality golf breaks to resorts across Turkey and North Cyprus. The company are currently offering an outstanding deal between January 2 Feburary 23 at the brand new Rui Kaya resort in Belek. The deal: Guests can enjoy a seven night allinclusive break from as little as £415pp when booking as part of a group, or £475pp in a non-group booking. The price includes golf at the Kaya Eagles course. www.alternativeturkey.com 020 7923 3230

Thailand

Head East for delicious food, bags of culture and top-class courses

E

VEN IF there was no golf on offer Thailand would still be a sensational country to visit. Here you find stunning cities, years of culture, terrific communications, delicious food and one of the friendliest races on earth. Factor in some terrific courses and it becomes one of the very best long-haul destinations anywhere. The only downside is that the country can be either blisteringly hot or else soaking wet, so the best time to go is during the cool season from November to February, where sunny days, like the very best of a British June are the norm. We shall start, as so many visitors do, in Bangkok, the country’s capital straddling the www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

great Chao Phraya River. Take time out to enjoy the sights before heading off to golf as this vast sprawling city has some of the world’s most fascinating landmarks. The best golf is between 20 minutes to an hour away. Courses in Thailand tend to be of the stadium variety with big, raised greens and lots of sand and water. Navatanee is typical of the best and only 20 minutes outside Bangkok. A mature Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that does not get too crowded, do try to get a round in here as well as the beautiful Thai Country Club, host to four Volvo Masters events, The noise and the heat of the capital persuade many wealthy Thais to move north to

Chiang Mai and we should do likewise. Chiang Mai is a mini Bangkok, but without the pollution. Stay and play at Chiangmai Highlands golf and spa resort. Set amid cool and peaceful wooded hillsides this Schmidt-Curley design is a joy to play, especially in the still of the morning. Moving south, the resort town of Pattaya could not be more different to Chiang Mai. Raucous, bawdy and unsophisticated it nonetheless boasts some of Thailand’s best courses with the Siam Country Club probably the pick of the bunch with immaculate greens, perilous creeks and lakes, plus 101 bunkers. And if the vulgarity of downtown Pattaya get all too much we

can always stay here instead. Continuing south from Pattaya we reach Phuket, Thailand’s largest island. This is real beach resort territory with palm trees, golden sands and some great courses. Play and stay at the exclusive Banyan Tree resort if you are feeling rich but also try and get to the Red Mountain, possibly Thailand’s most dramatic course with soaring elevations in the heart of Phuket’s wooded highlands created from an old quarry. Like so much of Thailand it is totally different. And remember, don’t shout angrily if you hit a bad shot. To the Thais, nearly all Buddhists, to raise one’s voice in anger is the height of ignorance. Lady Golfer 29

OU wouldn't think the pictured course was in the heart of the Arabian desert, would you? And 50 years ago you would've been right. Back then, the UAE was home to less than 100,000 people and was essentially a desolate block of blistering sand. The discovery of oil in 1962 changed all that. The bustling metropolis that exists now is characterised by its dredged islands, man-made waterways, opulent hotels, and an array of top class golf courses, like this one on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, designed by Gary Player. Saadiyat Beach is one of three Abu Dhabi courses in Golf Digest's Middle East topfour, so it makes sense to start your Emirati journey here. The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi has slowly become the cultural heart of the country. For a while, it seemed nothing could halt the steaming locomotive that was Dubai, but the global financial meltdown put pay to countless property projects. Abu Dhabi, with its larger oil reserves, escaped relatively unscathed. The city is now leading the way in tourism and is at the centre of most of the new architecture and investment. Indeed, two new galleries - the Louvre and Guggenheim - are set to open in the next few years. Saadiyat Beach is the first course in the Middle East to be located on the sea front. Visually stunning, it is a serious examination paper. Abu Dhabi GC is the eponymous host of the city's annual Tour event. It is slightly resort in style but very difficult and interesting. The greens are lightning and the fairways and tees like carpets. If Saadiyat is the fast-paced thrill ride, and Abu Dhabi GC is the technically-sound resort layout, Yas Links is a perfect middle ground. Renowned architect Kyle Phillips (mastermind behind Kingsbarns and the Grove) has sculpted what can only be described as the best example of links golf in a hot climate I’ve seen. www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

ention the Highland towns of Dornoch, Brora or Golspie to a golfer and you’ll lose them to a misty-eyed reverie of the game in its purest form; man versus the land, the elements and himself. If you drive the long journey north, it becomes something of a pilgrimage, travelling from Glasgow on the A9 and onwards up the spine of Scotland, past Stirling, Perth, skirting Gleneagles through the Cairngorms towards Inverness (on a stretch of road dubbed “The Killer” due to accidents caused by continual switching from single to dual carriageway). As you cross the Black Isle with Inverness behind you, you move beyond the UK’s most northerly city and the skies widen over a place that feels simpler, ancient, where land and sea meet to create a unique patchwork of coastal dunes, salt water marshes, tidal lochs and heather-clad mountains. Glance to the left as you cross the Dornoch Firth and you’ll notice a solitary white cottage on the northern shore. Rather than a crofter’s lonely

outpost, the cottage marks the boundary of the Skibo Estate, 7500 acres of lochs and lakes, woodland, ornamental gardens and Giant Sequoia, home to Skibo Castle, the Carnegie Club and a golf course to rival any other on this fabled, far-flung coast.

“You are warmly welcomed with a dram of whisky; there is no official reception desk at Skibo Castle” The entrance to Skibo is unprepossessing; a gateway off a narrow country lane and an intercom to announce your arrival before tracing a wooded driveway down to the house itself. And then all bets are off. When J. K. Rowling wrote of Hogwarts’ Room of Requirements, in which whatever you were most in need of would magically appear, she may have got the idea at Skibo. On

arrival car keys are handed over to a liveried staff member and it is whisked away to who knows where, but you won’t need it; transport is provided by a fleet of spotless golf buggies or specc’d up, chauffeured Range Rovers that you can summon seemingly by the power of thought. The Carnegie Club is named in honour of Andrew Carnegie, Scots born steel magnate and philanthropist who bought Skibo in 1872 and whose family retained the estate until 1982 when it was bought by a private investor and transformed into an exclusive members’ club, whose number total around 400 gilded individuals. The house itself is less a castle, more a crenellated Edwardian manor with 20 huge, ludicrously comfortable suites and the magnificent wood panelled Great Hall, where you are warmly welcomed with a dram of whisky (in keeping with members being considered honoured house guests, there is no official reception desk). There are also 12 Estate Lodges scattered through the grounds, perfect for families or anyone u

wanting a little more seclusion, although with a maximum of 90 guests on any given night, privacy isn’t an issue, peace and tranquility hang lazily in the air. The pace of life here is slow, time is irrelevant and you can do as little or as much as you like, whenever you like; nothing and nowhere is off limits. Wander, aimless, through Scots Pines and historic parkland, swim in the jawdropping, steel-clad, glass-roofed pool (which you will have to yourself) or arrange a treatment in the excellent spa next door. Ask Colin to work miracles with your clay shooting, try quad biking, horse riding, fishing........or golf. The Carnegie Links course is world class, re-vamped and re-built under the supervision of director of golf, David Thompson. Surrounded on one side by a salt water inlet and on the other by a fresh water haven for trout, it is a pristine homage to seaside golf, there are no tee times and holes can be played in any order. And it is unlikely you will see another soul. The clubhouse is one of Scotland’s most scenic, overlooking tidal Loch Evelix where wild geese perform formation fly pasts. Non members can now play the course with two fourballs available every day midweek in summer. At £300 per person (including lunch), it isn’t cheap, but then this is once in a lifetime stuff. For all the space and serenity, Skibo is a social place. Families are welcomed and facilities are excellent. The Club offers a rare opportunity to spend quality time together in as safe

an environment as possible, full of magic and discovery for kids. And if overwrought parents need some time for themselves, the Children’s Barn is fully supervised and packed to the rafters with toys, games, fancy dress, Nintendo Wiis, a petting zoo, sunken trampoline and craft or baking classes. All things to all people. Members meet and greet every Saturday evening over dinner, hosted by local bard and eighth-generation Dornocher Alan Grant, complete with haggis address and witty banter, where formal dress and formal surroundings belie a fun and friendly occasion. Any lingering reserve goes out the window in the ensuing ceilidh – bravely attempted but riotous and anarchic under the tutelage of the ever-patient Mary, for whom herding cats might be an easier endeavour. Skibo and the Carnegie Club is unlike anywhere else, at once rarefied and relaxed, where, for a price, you can

experience what is priceless; the beauty of nature, time and space to breathe, a place where life is made easy and uncomplicated. My memory of Skibo feels hazy, as though it were a dream, something borne out in its Norse translation – Fairyland of Peace. Indeed. n Membership is currently available at The Carnegie Club, although be warned, it is not cheap. Members pay a one-off joining fee, an annual fee and a daily rate during their stay, including all food, drink and most activities, including unlimited golf at the Carnegie Links, the Children’s Barn and 4 hours of babysitting per day. For more information see www.carnegieclub.co.uk or call 01862 894900. For tee time enquiries at the Carnegie Links e-mail teetimes@carnegieclub.co.uk or call the pro shop on 01862 894 660

ARLIER this year, a study claimed that, statistically, women suffer more stress-related, mental-health problems than men, with the juggling of our many, many different roles cited as one of the main causes of the problem. For anyone familiar with the inner workings of the female mind, this is unlikely to come as a surprise. Marvellous although we are at multitasking (although having walked into a lamp post once while checking my phone I am afraid that I myself am a poor example of the age-old belief that the sisterhood has so masterfully protected), the increasing feeling among many that one has to simultaneously pull off the roles of homemaker, career girl, socialite, and a catalogue of things in between, all while looking as though we were born with manicured nails and a blow dry to rival Kate Middleton’s, is, frankly, a little bit overwhelming.

36 Lady Golfer

Worst of all, that’s just the pressure to fit each of those moulds, before you actually start trying to put it all into action! As a bit of a stereotype, but one that seems to be pretty widely justified based on that tried-and-tested ritual of simply chatting to friends and other women (tea and cake optional, but I find that they help), it isn’t just the external pressures that are a problem, but those little voices inside our heads are constantly rattling on and telling us that we could or should be doing better. From that extra pound we think we should lose to the plethora of other criticisms our internal monologue hurls at us in a never-ending stream of abuse – “you should be thinner, faster, nicer, a better mother, sister, wife, girlfriend, employee. It’s 9am, why haven’t you conquered the world yet? You’ve had time!” – it yells in a shrill and ever so slightly snotty voice, that is both ongoing

and self-destructive. So the girls at Spabreaks.com had a bit of a think, because this simply seems like an unworkable message to keep sending to ourselves, and in among all the things we feel pressure about, there are some really wonderful things we all can do. To be honest, women in the 21st century… well, we kind of rock (she says, feeling guilty at the overt, if collective, selfcongratulating assertion), and that is something to be celebrated and enjoyed. How then, can we get rid of some of that negative energy and bolster ourselves to achieve our best and be happy that we have done what we can? Our conclusion is very simple, we all need to devote a little time every now and again to simply doing something to be a little kinder to ourselves. Now this doesn’t have to be a big thing, or cost a lot of money, and it is important that it doesn’t just become another thing you

are adding to your to-do list. This is about setting time aside, whether it’s half an hour or a whole day, to regroup and give yourself a break – go for a walk (or round of golf) in the fresh air; cut the umbilical cord to your iPhone and turn it off; have a bubble bath and read a good book – perhaps add a glass of wine for good measure; or simply tell yourself that whatever you did today, you did just fine. These are the things that can make a huge difference, and have given rise to the formation of the first #bekindtoyou Women’s Wellness Week from September 16 to 20, which will explore a number of aspects that affect women’s well-being, from menopause to body confidence, as well as fundraising for cancer support charity, Look Good Feel Better. The ultimate purpose of the week, however, is to assert this importance of giving yourself a break, and importantly for a lot of us, pointing out that that time

out can actually prove to be more productive to our goals of world domination than constantly banging away at the tasks at hand without respite. Of course, it will come as no surprise to you that I would be lying if I didn’t think that spas themselves have a fundamental role to play in the #bekindtoyou idea, not just because they are unequivocally relaxing, but because what is often so difficult for many of us is finding a physical space that allows us the psychological legroom to relax. The spa environment being separate from the worlds we are in day in day out, is one that we can associate with being a little calmer. Not only that, but it is a place where you can feel safe to let your guard down; the image of cuddling up in a fluffy white robe is about more than feeling cosy, it’s about everybody in the same environment being just as vulnerable as everyone else – no make-up, no armour

and not caring – simply coming to terms with themselves and enjoying it without interruption. So that’s the idea, and I hope you join our wonderful group of women during #bekindtoyou Women’s Wellness Week to share what you’re doing, and encourage other women to take a little time as well, but mostly, I just hope that you do something that makes you happy. After all, if you’re going to take over the world, or at the very least dominate the golf course, you’re going to need to feel good to give it your best shot! TOUR TIPS: What you can learn from Beatriz Recari 1) The ‘iron woman’ made every cut in her 27 starts on the LET in 2012. The stand-out area has to be her long game. The most impressive area to watch is the excellent posture at address and the terrific body pivot back and through the ball. She has a relatively steep shoulder plane, meaning that the shoulders turn back and through on slightly more of a tilt towards the ground than some other players.

2) This helps breed a great plane and also encourages solid ball striking. Take up your own golf posture and tilt over slightly more than usual from the hip area. Then place a club across the front of your shoulders, folding your arms and placing each hand on a shoulder with the club shaft trapped underneath. Now simply turn back and through, feeling as if the shoulders tilt more down in the general direction of where your ball would be at address on the back and through swing. This is a great drill for use at home.

INSTRUCTION

SWING SEQUENCE With the coach of Solheim Cup sensation Charley Hull

LEE Scarbrow has been coaching Charley Hull since she was nine. The pair have worked full-time since February 2011. In that time the 17-year-old has moved seamlessly from the Curtis Cup to the Solheim Cup, something that has never been done before. “Most of Charley’s swing is pretty much how we want it.

48 Lady Golfer

Her balance at address is fantastic and her posture is so athletic. We have worked on lifting up her spine by raising her hands and shoulders at address and we have got her hips lined up more on top of her feet with a better knee flex. She is in a perfectly balanced position but also very dynamic and able to cope with the motion of the swing very well.

Her arms are slightly ahead of her spine to get the left arm rotating across the spine and helping the body turn in the backswing which is why she has such great lines in the takeaway. She sets the club on plane brilliantly well. Physically she is only just 17 so this year she has started working on her core and her

left leg. Her left leg gives a little bit too much in the backswing and works across too close to the right leg but one of the things I love about Charley’s backswing is how she keeps her left knee very high. A lot of players get their left knee very forward and they lose their posture and balance, Charley keeps her left knee nicely up.

LG pp 48-49 Charley Hull Instruction 23/08/2013 10:36 Page 49

“She starts her downswing with her right knee working across and her spine unwinds into the ball. Her right leg is across the ball at impact which allows her to extend right down the line. One of the crucial factors in this part of the swing is that she unwinds from the floor up as opposed to the other way round.

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

Her right knee really helps her to clear her hips very well and She finishes with her legs quite close together. Her right foot is absolutely perfectly straight up and in balance. It is a classic finish. She hasn’t got too many faults, it is just a case of keeping things in check and making sure that she doesn’t get too fast in the transition.

If she stays in balance not too much can go wrong, she hits it as straight as anyone I have ever seen. Charley is a dream to work with, she can’t hit enough balls or do enough work. She is so willing to learn and she is always asking questions. I’m biased but I have never seen anyone, male or female, like it.“

Charley became the youngest player to represent either Europe or the USA at the Solheim Cup. The 17-year-old was second in her first five starts on tour. Lee Scarbrow is a renowned teacher and was coach to Ian Poulter for seven years as well as giving him just his second job as an assistant.

INSTRUCTION

PACKING A PUNCH How best to deliver a low blow

Above is how I would set up for a standard 7 iron shot. To hit a punch shot your posture is key – angle your spine to a more neutral position (tilting it towards the target) and this automatically helps lower the ball flight. Around 55 per cent of your weight should be on your left side and the ball should be two balls backward of standard. From there you can drive and deliver the ball through the wind. If it’s breezy, swing it easy.

LG pp 50-51 Ellis Instruction 23/08/2013 12:34 Page 51

Firstly grip down an inch or two to gain more control. Keeping your hands ahead of the ball and clubhead through impact is important. Here is a good drill with an alignment stick to help with that. This will also encourage you to finish low and curtail that followthrough. If you don't get it right, you'll soon know about it!

POODLE LAUNCH AUTUMN PULLOVER COLLECTION Technology, style and chic combine perfectly in this new seasonal line Poodle have launched a new collection of pullovers that are perfect for the course this autumn. The collection features two lines – the Moondoggie and Mashie rashie collections. Both lines incorporate the latest CapiDry fabric technology – a polyester/elastane stretch knit with fibres contoured to channel moisture to the surface, allowing

the material to dry quickly. The fibre structure also facilitates moisture management, meaning that effectiveness is not diminished with laundering. Moondoggies are made from a solid body color and contrast print at the front collar, zippered neck panel and oversized Poodle logo on the back. The Mashie Rashie takes its name from a combination of the old spade mashie club and the rashguard material which is used to protect surfers from water and sand. The black with tree-of-life magenta ‘Chill’ shirt (pictured) is one of the Mashie Rashies in the collection. www.poodle.eu

ONTEST PING SERENE DRIVER SRP: £239

TITLEIST Players Flex Glove The best compliment I can give this glove is that I completely forgot I was wearing it! Made from Cabretta leather, it is beautifully soft and comfortable, and it fits so perfectly, I just loved it. I haven’t tried it in the rain yet, but it claims to resist rain and perspiration and dry soft again while retaining its gripping properties. It certainly grips well in the dry, and I’ll be wearing it for a long time! SRP: £15

DAILY SPORTS Sleeveless Polo Shirt Also available with short sleeves, this sleeveless design is very striking with its bold three coloured front and logo design on the back. Made from 95 per cent cotton, 5 per cent spandex, it is both cool and stretchy enough to give complete freedom of movement throughout the swing, and joyfully doesn’t ride up. The arm holes are generously sized, so there is no chance of chafing. SRP: £48

SURPRIZESHOP Golf Bag Wine Bottle Holder This is such a fun wine bottle holder. It looks great in the centre of the table for an informal dinner with fellow golfers. It is available in black or more striking pink, and the attention to detail is excellent with all the zippers and straps shown. It holds the wine very securely, thanks to the overly large pitching wedge and sand wedge, and won’t mark any table top thanks to the velvety covered base. A definite talking point! SRP: £17.99 www.surprizeshop.co.uk

MADELEINE Handicap: 4 I have now got used to the purple colouring of the Serene range. The large head sits invitingly behind the ball, but 12° is a little too much loft for low handicappers, although I can see why it would appeal to higher handicappers. It is light, flexible and easy to hit. It feels very forgiving, and yet it gives a solid feel and strike, so it should be a confidence booster driver for those struggling off the tee. MANDY AMBERT Handicap: 13 This driver has a very flexible shaft and was very light in weight. Personally, I didn’t feel comfortable with the weight distribution from grip to clubhead and on contact didn’t gain any distance or improved trajectory on my own driver but I'm that's mainly because I use a men's Ping G20 driver normally. On examination of the clubface, I rarely hit the sweet spot and so personally found the club unforgiving. Not quite my cup of tea!

BRENDA CHATTERJEE Handicap: 35 Serene is an aptly named driver! I tried it on a number of occasions and would be very happy indeed if a kindly soul would leave one on the back seat of my car! It was so comfortable to use and I had no problem hitting the ball off each and every tee. I felt that it helped to keep my drive on a straight line. Could just be luck, but it felt most comfortable. A splendid club.

COMMENT

Claire Kane Keep cool and carry on...with a brolly

H

AVING spent many a month battling gale-force winds and standing over the ball like a big drip, we have now moved on to chasing balls under a scorching sun. Not that I’m complaining, it’s just a question of how best to handle anything Mother Nature throws at us. For example hacking around for four hours on a surface with similar properties to reinforced concrete requires seriously comfy shoes, preferably with added shock absorbers to avoid hobbling off with aching legs and sore feet. There are advantages in the hot weather, such as not having to constantly nip off to the loo for those with a weak bladder but the real bonus is the balls fly much further than usual. Although a bad bounce on the crusty fairways is likely to spin off in all directions so you’ll either need bionic eyes to track the flight path in the bright sunlight or accept that you’ll be playing ‘find the ball’ on at least nine holes rather than actually playing golf.

Eyes down Try not to look down at the ankles

66 Lady Golfer

Rare case Not often the brolly comes out in sunshine

Take care searching for balls in the undergrowth with exposed legs in shorts or cutoffs as you could be offering up a tasty morsel for the local midget population, never mind the potential danger of stumbling on a sleepy serpent sunning itself. With the recent months being some of the hottest on record for many a year, we can look forward to developing a wellbronzed appearance, sadly with the usual golfers’ tan of one white hand, a red ‘V’ neck and the area between the ankles and knees looking like it hasn’t seen a bathroom for months and in desperate need a good scrub. Thank goodness for fake tan to fill in the gaps and a decent hairdresser to sort out the sunbleached hair. When the high temperatures

‘MY POOR OPPONENT NEARLY FAINTED IN THE CAR PARK FROM THE HEAT’ recently appeared, I decided wearing a hat would be far too sweaty so instead I dug out my brolly - ironically, I haven’t been able to use it for months and months due to gusting winds. I admit, I probably looked quite eccentric parading around with an umbrella in 30+ degrees but as our game heated up (literally) I had quite an advantage as I remained cool, winning on the 16th. Why do I say the unusual shading helped? Because if I’m honest my golf wasn’t very good and my poor opponent nearly fainted in the car park

from the extreme heat. Golf’s not the only sport that has to cope with weather extremes and even tennis at Wimbledon has its fair share of rain and scorching sun – one of the reasons they employ a vast team to pull over rain covers and switch on airconditioning for top games. What luxury compared to our golfing Open Championships where play continues regardless of the elements. One thing golf could adopt from the world of tennis is the second serve instead of incurring three off the tee. Now, wouldn’t that be a popular change!
