It is a long season as we know but so much hinges on getting it right for the first game of the season for most clubs. We continually hear over the summer and in trial games that it is all about round one and being ready to perform at their best on the opening weekend. Results then seem to give fans false hope or despair after just one game. We can be a fickle bunch. Last week Geelong had already won the premiership, the Hawks were too old and had lost their hunger, and Demons’ fans were in high spirits of an improved season ahead. Round two is completed and normality resumes. Hawthorn is still flag favourite, Richmond and Melbourne remain the newspaper whipping boys and the Bulldogs continue to give us “sexy” football. The media though will delve deep to analyse each week’s rounds to find something to talk about and just for the sake of it

on most occasions and usually to over-exaggeration as well. It was drugs again that took over the airwaves and press last week, just when we thought we were over it all. The biggest story to date is probably Fremantle’s failings so far and how it seems to be chasing interstate players already to improve its stocks for future seasons. Have the Dockers already given up on this year? – It’s what we’re made to believe. Good wins to Gold Coast and GWS Giants will also have us taking notice but they still need to show some consistency before they are a real threat. Until then, both will continue to have highs and lows throughout the season. Locally, Port Adelaide’s struggles are taking up most of the talk and it will only get worse for Hinkley and his players if things remain as they are. The media likes to bring down individuals as well. At the moment, young Demons forward Jesse Hogan is facing the wrath of the so called football experts. He’s 19 years old and just had an explosive first season in the

THUMBS UP

Novak Djokovic’s quest to become the greatest men’s tennis player of all time has gained further momentum after the Serbian champion took down one of Roger Federer’s prized records last weekend. His 6-3 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori in Monday’s Miami Open final earned him a cool $US1,028,300 to take his overall earnings to $US98.2 million. At this rate, Djokovic will surpass $US100 million in career prizemoney by next month. He has won nine of the past 10 tournaments he has played and now has Federer’s record of 18 grand slam titles within his sights, currently on 11. “Of course it’s in the back of my mind somewhere,” Djokovic said after his Miami win. “But I don’t have it as a main motivation. Because then things can go a little bit out of control, maybe can present some kind of distraction that I don’t need.”

competition so of course opposition clubs are going to give him greater respect this year. There’s plenty of time for him to work his way through it and still be the star forward most expect him to be. The continual bashing, though, will affect his mental state and hinder that development which he must go through to become a dominant player in the AFL. They won’t stop either questioning his contract deliberations and other clubs’ interests in him before he has really proven himself as well. It’s just what we have come to expect and it can all change in a flicker. Again though, we are only two weeks in. However, it’s well known that every week there will be one side lauded and another lambasted. You just don’t want to be the one being condemned on a continual basis. The season is a marathon, as it is widely touted, so there are still many more weeks of this media fodder to come. Just don’t believe everything you hear – especially from round one results. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

Australia’s bid for a four-peat in the women’s World T20 Cup was thwarted in the final when their dreams were shattered by West Indies. Despite setting a target that would have sufficed against most opposition (149), the Caribbeans hammered the Aussie bowlers to record a convincing eight-wicket win. The Southern Stars had their chances but a botched run-out late and dropped catch from eventual match winner Stafani Taylor proved costly while only managing one run in their own final batting over also proved decisive when an even bigger total looked promising. It was a triple treat as the Calypso Kings beat England in the men’s competition after Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes in the final over, to celebrate alongside the U19s and their queens.

No alarm bells yet but ready to chime

A

larm bells should not be ringing just yet at Alberton but coach Ken Hinkley’s stress levels will have risen, particularly after last week’s performance against Adelaide.

The Bombers will come to Adelaide on Friday night buoyant after their success against Melbourne last week when many suggested they wouldn’t win a game at all this year.

His game plan tweak has left the Power’s defence a leaking sieve but all cannot be blamed on the back six, with the midfielders pushing up too high and leaving too much room for their opposition to run and kick into a sparse open forward line.

Port Adelaide won’t be napping like the Demons were last week but it is vulnerable.

This shouldn’t take much to rectify with tighter constraints on opponents, especially through the middle, and less zoning around the ground. Their strong engine room of Travis Boak, Robbie Gray and Ollie Wines, even Aaron Young who showed he welcomed the release of the much-maligned vest last week and can be a regular contributor this season, must regain its confidence to move the ball quicker and put more pressure on their opposition around the contests which it is usually well known for. Issues were also always going to be raised when Port Adelaide began to suffer injuries, particularly to key players. Unfortunately, that has occurred in the opening weeks of the season. The club’s so called strengths in attack have now been depleted with the loss of Patrick Ryder at the beginning of the season and now Jay Schulz with a concerning back complaint. The problem was exacerbated further last week when hamstring tightness limited Chad Wingard’s mobility. He has now been ruled out this week against Essendon on Friday night at Adelaide Oval, a big blow to the Power. The dilemma for Hinkley is what was assumed to be good depth at the club in its reserves is not proving to be. Obviously it takes time for youngsters to develop but Hinkley would have been hoping to see the likes of Jesse Palmer, Darcy ByrneJones and Logan Austin show a little more to push for senior selection. West Adelaide draftee Riley Bonner looks ready to jump the lot of them but other than him, Hinkley will simply have to go to the well of tried and tested players such as Karl Amon, Sam Colquhoun and John Butcher along with Kane Mitchell from the Rookie list. Sadly Paul Stewart and Cam O’Shea continue to struggle even in the SANFL. So Hinkley’s stocks aren’t as great as previously envisaged. Unfortunately Hamish Hartlett is set to miss another this week which won’t help alleviate those concerns.

Joe Daniher could add further headaches for Hinkley as he tries to curtail the influence of a dominant forward target from last week. Consistency has been Daniher’s failing in the past and he will be looking to put two quality outings together. Much will rest on Jackson Trengove and Alipate Carlile to reduce Daniher’s impact but his strong aerial ability will be difficult to contain.

Footy footnotes We didn’t really see that result coming in the Showdown – well, the margin anyway. A lack of Victorian media’s acknowledgement of the Showdown is disappointing but we probably come to expect that. There were many surprises last weekend though. • Port will televise two of its home games live into China to build its relationship with the new supporter base starting with this week’s Essendon clash on Friday night and then Geelong in round five – good thing they didn’t show the Showdown or its rivals may have benefited more • The Bombers’ song after their win over Melbourne appeared to have more players inside the centre receiving the Gatorade shower than those in the outside • Oh and Channel Nine News Melbourne, I think you need to teach your Social Media people about the AFL landscape after referring to Melbourne as the Devils in a tweet about the Essendon’s victory • It’s a toss-up as to who has the worse kick for goal – Magpies Cloke or Essendon’s Daniher? • Stevie J might not have gained much satisfaction from beating his old teammates last week but we’re sure he enjoyed showing the Cats coaching staff where he probably should still be after having an influence on their downfall last week – no doubt a bit of backchat as well • Geelong’s Mitch Duncan came off the ground worse for wear after confronting the big (Shane) Mummy from the Giants – he did well to get back up but it got a humorous hashtag on Twitter, #greatwallofmummy

Who would have thought that a clash against Essendon would be so season decisive for the Power in just round three but that is what they face. Another loss and then the alarm bells will well and truly be chiming. The media attention Richmond encountered during the week will make the Crows trip to Melbourne tougher. The Tigers will want to respond again to the criticism of their mental strength in tight contests and Adelaide is sure to cop the brunt of it at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. These games, though, can set-up the Crows season, especially by winning away from home. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN • It was a case of almost winning a car last week when Bulldog Liam Picken and Crow Eddie Betts flew high but failed to hold their marks – Giant Will Hoskin-Elliott, on the other hand, showed them how it’s done and has one hand on the keys unless someone else can do better • Former Hawk, now Bulldog Matt Suckling knows he won’t receive as much sledging from his ex-teammates as he does when he’s on the golf course with them – a recent outing partnered Jack Gunston finished with a loss that he wasn’t happy with but also a broken driver to boot – “Golf is fun!” he tweeted • It doesn’t seem the most disastrous position to be in but the records show that only one side has actually come back and made the finals following a 0-2 start in the past five years – Carlton in 2013 doesn’t really count due to being elevated into the eight after Essendon’s finals ban – so it doesn’t bode well for Fremantle which finds itself in that position right now – there’s still time though and it shouldn’t be a loss cause yet for the Dockers – a Derby win this week could quickly turn their fortunes around • Former Saints tough guy Barry Hall has staggeringly revealed that he “didn’t give a sh*t” about losing the 1997 grand final to Adelaide saying his attitude at the time was apathetic but he was “shattered” about losing the 2006 grand final when at the Swans • Ex-Sun Joel Wilkinson has followed NRL convert Jarryd Hayne into the NFL, signing with the Arizona Cardinals where he hopes to make it as a cornerback – he has said after only six month’s training in the US that he has become “twice the athlete” he was in three years on the Gold Coast

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 3

BY DION HAYMAN

PORT ADELAIDE V ESSENDON Friday 7.20pm, Adelaide Oval

At one point, it loomed that Friday night football would be another sub-standard spectacle from a horror blowout when Port Adelaide hosts Essendon at Adelaide Oval this week. It still could be but the Power will need to lift on recent performances. The sides met just once last year in round 17 at Docklands and the Bombers kicked their second highest score of the season and one of only three centuries they scored all year. However Port still won by 13 points, 20.9 (129) to 17.14 (116). Paddy Ryder booted four goals against his old side including three in a decisive final term when Port added seven goals to five after scores were level at three quarter-time. Essendon had won its previous five clashes with the Power dating back to 2011. The Bombers only prior match at Adelaide Oval brought them a two-point win against Port in 2014, 8.14 (62) to 7.18 (60). The Bombers led at every change and hung on against a fast finishing Power.

The battle of the Bridge goes into its fifth season and GWS has just one win to show for itself after eight games against Sydney. That was a 32-point win at the Sydney Showgrounds in the opening round of the 2014 season. The Giants won 15.9 (99) to 9.13 (67) after piling on six unanswered goals in the final term. But since then, the Swans have recorded three comfortable victories, winning by 46 points at the SCG later that season, by 21 points at the same ground last year and by a whopping 89 points at the Showgrounds in round 21 last season. Kurt Tippett finished that game with five goals as the Swans won 20.13 (133) to 6.8 (44). Jeremy Cameron scored three of the Giants’ six majors. The Giants are yet to kick 100 points against the Swans.

GOLD COAST V CARLTON

Collingwood is unbeaten in its past nine games against St Kilda and has won the past seven in a row since the sides drew at the MCG in the 2010 grand final. Four of those seven wins have been by more than 50 points with only one close contest when the Pies hung on to win by six points at the MCG in 2012. The last two games between the sides have seen Collingwood kick the same score of 21.14 (140) in the last two seasons. The Pies won by 86 points at Docklands in 2014 with five goals from Travis Cloke and four apiece from Alex Fasolo and Jamie Elliott, and they won by 74 points last year in round three at the MCG when Cloke booted another five and Elliott another four. St Kilda hasn’t beaten Collingwood since round three, 2010 at Docklands when it won by 28 points.

Carlton has won four of its five games against Gold Coast. But its one defeat signalled the end of its finals hopes in 2012 and the descent into an abyss that has taken the Blues all the way to the AFL’s basement. Gold Coast won that home game in round 22, 2012 by 12 points, 15.8 (98) to 11.20 (86) with four goals from Tom Lynch. Carlton’s only other trip to meet the Suns on the Gold Coast was a year later when it left with a 43-point win, 16.24 (120) to 11.11 (77) with four goals from Lachie Henderson and three from Eddie Betts. So Carlton’s two away games to the Suns have returned an off-target 27.44. Of its top seven highest individual goal-kickers against Gold Coast, only Andrew Walker remains with the Blues. Jeff Garlett, Jarrad Waite, Tom Bell, Bret Thornton, Henderson and Betts are all gone.

Richmond has won four of its last six games against Adelaide but the Crows were last-start winners by 36 points at Adelaide Oval in round 19 last year. The Crows won 11.22 (88) to 8.4 (52) with Dustin Martin top scoring with three of the Tigers’ eight goals. It’s 10 years since these sides met at Docklands. The Tigers won by three points in round eight, 2006, 10.9 (69) to 9.12 (66) in a famous game where Tigers coach Terry Wallace denied Adelaide the ball. The Tigers went into the game in 11th place on the ladder while the Crows were top. However Joel Bowden finished with 28 kicks and 20 marks in the game of ‘keepies off’ which saw the Tigers take 181 marks to Adelaide’s 102. It was Richmond’s first and still only win in five games against the Crows at Docklands. Overall, Adelaide leads 21 wins to 12.

West Coast ended a run of six straight defeats in the western derby, beating Fremantle by 24 points in round 20 last season. The Eagles opened with 7.2 to 1.3 and never let the Dockers back into the game. Josh Hill finished with four goals while Michael Walters scored four for the losers. The Dockers had won in round three by 30 points after a first quarter blitz of 9.2 to 0.4. Mark LeCras top scored with five of West Coast’s 12 goals. Since 2007, Fremantle has bossed the derby with 13 wins to four. It would have tied the ledger with victory in their last meeting but instead, the Eagles now lead 22 wins to 20. Five of the 42 games between these sides have been decided by less than a kick. The Dockers have won three of them.

Hawthorn has won seven games straight against the Western Bulldogs including a 70-point win in Launceston in round three last year. Jarryd Roughead booted seven goals as the Hawks won 19.13 (127) to 8.9 (57). Roughead also booted six goals in Hawthorn’s previous clash with the Bulldogs, which it won by 62 points in 2014, also in Launceston. The last three meetings between the sides have in fact been at that ground. This match though returns to Docklands where they will meet for the first time since 2012. North Melbourne has won its last 14 games in a row against Melbourne since the Demons’ last victory by 50 points at the MCG in 2006. Nathan Jones, who was playing his fourth game that day, is the only survivor at Melbourne from that match. The Roos won their next match against Melbourne in 2007 by one point but since then, their closest call has been a 10-point victory in 2010. Ten of their wins have been by five goals or more and one was by 122 points in 2013. SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 3

BY CHRIS KENDALL

PORT V NORTH

SOUTH V WEST

Two vastly contrasting formlines from last week, with the Magpies unable to overcome the Adelaide Reserves at Mannum, while North Adelaide brought about the upset of the season in recording their first win in nearly 12 months in knocking over Norwood. The Roosters were one of the biggest outsiders in SANFL betting history, but were never seriously threatened and responded in sensational style to reward many long suffering fans. Port have appeared a little predictable in ball movement in their opening two games and coach Chad Cornes will be aiming to bring some x-factor to mix things up against a North outfit that will be desperate to prove last week was not a flash in the pan. The way it took the game on, used its pace and moved the ball quickly into a multi-dimensional attack – long an Achilles Heel at Prospect – will be very hard to beat here if it can sustain the effort. I’ll back North to keep its tails up again.

While it may seem early to dub it a premiership hangover, the concern at West Adelaide continues to grow following another thumping, this time at the hands of Glenelg. Despite the return of experience such as Jason Porplyzia, it was never in the hunt against a hungry Tigers outfit, while South withstood a blistering opening from the Eagles to record an impressive 43 point win led by Nick Liddle and Nathan Daniel. The speed and precision of South’s ball movement to a multi pronged forward 50 last week was very impressive and will throw down a challenge to the Bloods this week if they allow the Panthers the same latitude. West seems to be still tinkering with its defensive structures but coach Mark Mickan would be more frustrated by the number of turnovers when working the ball through the midfield. At a venue where West has not won for over three years, this spells danger for the reigning premier.

Both fresh from the round-two bye, but the Bulldogs bring the form of a 107 point round one victory over North in, while Sturt seemed to be laboring at times in a 39-point loss to Woodville/West Torrens. The loss of some key position players over the summer is going to take time for Double Blues coach Martin Mattner to replace but the club has shown over the years it can rebuild quickly by keeping faith in the youngsters. It would be unwise to simply follow the round one formlines by looking at the respective opponents, given the vastly differing turnarounds in round two by their opponents, but the Bulldogs were very impressive a fortnight back. Roy Laird’s charges are also reworking their style somewhat, but the plethora of scoring options and key position options look set to stretch the SANFL’s youngest senior list. The Double Blues will give a good account, but Central should take the points.

The Eagles seemed to really struggle with South last week, going down by more than seven goals, when the opening 12 minutes suggested a big win was on the cards. Their discipline in keeping to structures and working to clamp down the Panthers at the stoppages appeared wayward and was punished accordingly. Adelaide built an undefeated start to 2016 by withstanding a spirited Magpie challenge at Mannum in recording a 30-point win. Eagles coach Michael Godden will study last week’s tape carefully, in particular some late South goals to observe how many of his onball brigade zoned off quickly at ballups to allow their opponents an unimpeded passage to goal. Such latitude cannot be afford to a rampant Adelaide lineup that has proven its ability to score quickly and heavily when challenged, although it is worth noting that the Eagles have won the past two encounters between the sides. Overall, it is difficult to tip against Adelaide.

Top-two finish imperative for Reds

A

delaide United enters the final weekend of the A-League minor round with a chance to claim the Premiers Plate, awarded to the top side on the ladder. However, it is just as imperative that the Reds defeat Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Friday night to ensure they at least stay in second position. No side in the competition has won the A-League title from outside the top two so gaining points from their trip to Melbourne is crucial. A win could also hand United top spot and the Premiers Plate if Brisbane loses or draws against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Saturday night. A draw against Melbourne City would require the Roar to lose and Western Sydney lose or draw while it would remain second if it drew and Brisbane won, as long as the Wanderers still lost or drew. A loss on Friday night would invariably see the Reds drop to anywhere as low as fifth, which would truly dent their title hopes. Therefore, focus must be on claiming a victory to maintain a top-two finish. Ex-Melbourne City player Stefan Mauk will be hoping to give his old side some grief, mindful

of suffering a 1-0 loss to his former outfit at Coopers Stadium just four weeks ago. He is keen to turn the table this week knowing a toptwo finish will be massive in Adelaide’s pursuit of its first ever A-League championship.

“As a team, you can build yourself on a good defence,” the 20 year-old continued. “We don’t go out there to not concede (only), but it proves that we’re a team and we work for each other.

City must also win to claim a top-two possie themselves so this is going to be an extremely tough contest. Some believe this clash could be title deciding.

“We’ve always had a good spread of players (contributing with goal scoring).

“If we can stop City as a team and just focus on our game, then we should be fine with getting the result,” Mauk said. “We know if we go out there and win, we’re guaranteed a top-two finish, which is very important going into the finals because you have the first week off and then a home semi-final.” Adelaide’s 2-0 win over the Sky Blues saw Guillermo Amor’s team become the first in the A-League’s history to register four consecutive clean sheets away from home, a feat Mauk lauded. However, the creative midfielder also praised the scoring exploits of his teammates, claiming it will be difficult to nullify the Reds’ attacking presence with a number of quality goal scorers in their ranks.

“It’s good to have that because (opposition) teams can’t hone in on anyone specifically because we have players in every position that can score goals.” The Reds will need to be more productive than they were in their last encounter against Melbourne City which was a feisty contest that saw few goal-scoring opportunities from either side but City was clearly better on the day. The local side struggled to gain any impetus on that occasion, which was made worse when playmaker Marcelo Carrusca was forced from the pitch at half-time and City scored after the break. Carrusca returned from the groin injury sustained that day in Adelaide’s win over Sydney FC last week and hopefully he has a major impact on Friday night. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Scott believes he’s man to beat at Masters

T

here’s nothing like a bit of self confidence, with world No.6 and former Masters champion Adam Scott believing he is the man to beat at Augusta this week. Scott, with two US PGA Tour wins already this season, showed no sign of fear of the likes of in-form countryman and world number one Jason Day, Rory McIlroy or defending champion Jordan Spieth. “I have to believe I am going to win this week and that no one else has a chance,” said Scott, seeking to recapture the magic of 2013 when he famously became the first Australian to win a green jacket. “I honestly believe you have to see it happening for it to happen and that was probably the difference in my career before I

won a major. “It doesn’t mean it just happens but with some good shots and putts going in at the right time it can unfold that way.”

Despite his recent victories, there are still questions as to whether Scott can handle the slick Augusta greens with the short putter.

Since taking down Angel Cabrera in a playoff in 2013, Scott was T14 in 2014 and at T38 last year.

But the man himself, who has lifted his strokes gained putting stat from 157th on tour in 2015 to 48th on tour this season, feels it will be to his advantage.

But his optimism has risen thanks to recent back-to-back wins at the Honda Classic and WGC Cadillac Championship. “It’s huge coming in with confidence to any major, certainly here because you need your game to be on point here,” he said. “The confidence is a lot higher than last year. “There was a lot of tinkering going on in the lead up last year but things look much more in place coming here this year and it’s been a calmer preparation.”

“I’ve said all along as soon as I get on this type of green, the faster quicker greens, I am going to putt better than slower greens,” he said. “The fast quick greens like back home at Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath – they are my favourite greens to putt on as well as here at Augusta. I think the rhythm of my stroke certainly favours this pace of green.” BEN EVERILL – AAP

Chics look to step up again K

ilburn will be aiming to test itself against tougher opposition in Division 3 when it kicks off its season against Flinders Park at home on Saturday. The Chics won the Division 4 grand final last season and under coach Matthew Whelan will be looking to leave their mark on this competition. Flinders Park also will be aiming for a better season after toiling just above the relegation zone in this grade last season. Dave Kennewell takes the reins again this season. Pembroke Old Scholars hosts Gepps Cross in an intriguing start to the year for both sides. Pembroke recorded a solid year in Division 3 last season, falling short in the first semi final to Old Ignatians. Michael O’Leary has the reins and will be looking for a good opening to the season. Gepps Cross endured a tough year in Division 2 and was relegated. Paul James will be looking to make sure the Rams hit the year hard. Athelstone and Golden Grove meet at Max Amber Sportsfield with both sides having made the Division 3 finals last season. Jade Sheedy calls the shots again as coach of the Raggies, while Ben Armstrong will be looking to guide the Kookaburras to another stint in the finals. A tough match to line up but Athelstone gets the nod at home. Seaton Ramblers and Plympton meet at Seaton with both sides coming off disappointing 2015 seasons in this grade.

The last two years in Division 3 has seen Plympton finish seventh so it will be looking to achieve a finals berth in 2016. Photo: Jayson Vowles The Rams have stayed up at this level despite their bottom position in 2015 and will be aiming for a better year under coach Matt Webber. Plympton will be hoping for better form under coach Damian Minervini, aiming to better last season’s seventh place. Mitcham and Walkerville lock horns at Thomas Farms Oval (Mitcham). The Hawks will be coached by Adam West again, while former SANFL star Frank Leonard has the reins with the Cats which will aim to hit back after a poor

Nine News Division 4 Demons aim to keep Magpies grounded

E

astern Park faces a test to kick off its season on a high when it meets first-round winner North Haven at home this Saturday.

The Demons had a first-round bye when Para Hills withdrew from the competition and will look for a bright start under coach Scott McGee. North Haven was outstanding in its 101-point home win against Kenilworth last week. The Magpies kicked 18 goals with the wind and nine goals against. Brenton Wanganeen, Brett Pederson (six goals), Aaron Hinsley and Cohen Mattner (seven goals) were among the best. Hard to gauge the depth of the sides but the Magpies can win again by 13-24. Westminster Old Scholars hosts Pooraka, both losing their respective games last week by less than a goal. The Dragons fell to Salisbury last week by a point with Rhys French (three goals), Ben Fisher and Josh Charles playing

well. Pooraka led for most of the day against Hope Valley, falling by three points at home. Chris Adams, Brayden Coombs and Joshua Pelentsov led the way for the Bulls. Back on home deck the Dragons should hit back by 37-48 points. Hope Valley hosts Colonel Light Gardens in what should be an intriguing battle. The Demons kept at it to get over Pooraka by three points away with Devin Payne, Jayke Hellmanns and Matthew Glen playing well. Brett Slater kicked three goals. Colonel Light Gardens beat Edwardstown by nine points at Mortlock Park after leading 4.2 to no score mid way in the first quarter. The Lions steadied under pressure with Josh Bennett (four goals), Jarred Graetz, Emmett Wood, Jakob Napier and Alistair Fleming (three goals) all playing strongly. Another tough game but the Lions to roar by 10-22 points.

Kenilworth faces a tough home battle against Salisbury. The Kookaburras found North Haven too strong, crashing by 101 points away with Shaun Clarke, Blake Moser (six goals) and Henry Moss among the best. Salisbury nearly threw the game away against Westminster Old Scholars, kicking 8.16 to 10.3 to win by a point. Matthew Goodes, Ryan Wood and Brad Horjus (three goals) played strongly. Dolphins have some new tricks

C

BCOC revealed some new tricks first up to show that it was ready to rise up the Division 5 ladder this season.

The Dolphins looked imposing in notching their round one win over Elizabeth by 42 points. Shaun Turner and Sam Madigan got the ball rolling and highlighted a bright future ahead for the Old Collegiate outfit.

On Saturday, Smithfield will host Pulteney which had a similar tough battle on its hands last week, but failed to prevent a Lockleys’ triumph. The Demons Daniel Voyzey and Callan Buchecker stayed resolute throughout to see their side get up by 17 points.

A visit to Rosewater is always daunting and after a loss last week, the Bulldogs will not want to drop their opening two matches.

A home encounter now awaits them with first-round loser Glenunga hoping it can bounce back quickly from a disappointing loss to Hectorville.

Smithfield was made to fight for its victory at the Doghouse, but claimed the points in a tight contest.

It was close all day at Webb Oval but the Hounds prevailed in the finish by just eight points after scores were level at the final break.

Corey Clark and Rob Marshall had their opponent’s measure to ensure success for the Panthers by 11 points.

The Rams already look better than last year despite their first-round defeat and will test Lockleys this week.

Hectorville will need Josh Ingall and Jake Mazzone to be their best again among others to push their fellow Hounds on Saturday. Blackfriars OS began its title quest with a serviceable 27-point win over Greenacres in which Luke Bortolotti and Matthew Rivett stood out. Coach Aleks Bojanic will be hoping for further improvement to come from the premiership favourites, though. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

rahma Lodge and Mawson Lakes look set for a tight tussle when they meet at Brahma Lodge this week in the second round of competition. The Tigers fell to West Croydon by 53 points last week with Darren Huitema, Braiden Tippett and Daniel Grgurovic among the best. Mawson Lakes kicked off its season with a solid 17-point win at home against Mitchell Park with Brayden Bennett, Ivan Novosel (seven goals) and Nathan McCammon among the key players. The Tigers will be keen to hit back at home but the Saints just might have the edge by 10-22 points. Fitzroy and Trinity Old Scholars clash at Fitzroy Sports Club in the clash of the Lions. Fitzroy was no match at home against Ingle Farm, falling by 55 points with Dane Avery, Shaun Smith and Lee Makris among the best. The Lions from Trinity had a tough game against

Houghton Districts, going down by eight points after trailing by nine, 15 and 15 points at the changes. Brad Cameron, Jace O’Hara and Daniel O’Rielly led the way for Trinity which can win again this week by 13-26 points. Mitchell Park and Houghton Districts, last season’s Division 7 grand finalists, meet again in this higher grade. Mitchell Park lost last week by 17 points to Mawson Lakes with Chris Farrell, Paul Rutter and Brandon Walczak leading the way. The Raiders showed plenty of grit to beat Trinity Old Scholars by nine points with Joshua Davis, Wade Vandermoer and Alex Bray (four goals) among the best. The Lions can win by 12-21 points. The western derby between Woodville South and West Croydon at Ledger Reserve looks a beauty on paper. Both sides won last week with Dhenon Economou and Bronan

linders University failed to win a game in 2015, but is looking a far different outfit this year, recording a rousing round-one victory first up to suggest the club is finally on the up.

The Tigers declared their drive for success this season in accounting for the risen Payneham Norwood Union by a telling 82 points with Jace Ryles and Joseph Timpano dictating terms.

The Crabs had to make probably one of their longest trips in history to achieve it though, meeting elevated North Pines on Andrew Smith Reserve at Parafield Gardens.

Eight goals from Chris Hannemann ensured the Reds cruised to a commanding 97-point triumph over 2015 finalists St Pauls OS while Hahns Sullivan and Jack Tidswell instigated play.

Flinders University’s improvement will be tested this week when facing another newcomer to Division 7 in Unley Mercedes Jets at home. The Jets got their season off on the right note too, defeating former Division 6 side Central United by 11 points in a tight contest. Albert Rasheed and Mingma Sherpa were instrumental in getting their side over the line. It was big victories to Salisbury West and Prince Alfred OC in the other matches over the opening weekend.

Ingle Farm and Adelaide Lutheran clash in another tough game to line up. The Bulldogs (Ingle) won easily against Fitzroy with Bradley Sanderson and Nathan Coleman starring, while the best for the Lutheran bulldogs in their 22-point loss to Woodville South were Ben Noll and Mark McFarlane. No Winx opens Queen Elizabeth Stakes up

O

pposing trainers would have breathed a sigh of relief when Winx did not accept for Saturday’s rich Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick. Trainer Chris Waller made the decision not to persist with the Queen Elizabeth for his champion mare after she had a tough run in winning the Doncaster Mile last week. He declared that it was a joint agreement between owners and himself to send Winx to the paddock and come back for the defence of her Cox Plate won last year. Waller will still be a major player in the $4m race on Saturday with his Australian Cup and BMW winner Preferment. Surprisingly, the Zabeel four year-old is not favourite but sharing second line of betting with Godolphin’s Hauraki and Lloyd Williams-owned The United States holding top honours. It has been more than a year since Hauraki last won a race but the wait will be worthwhile if he can break through in the Queen Elizabeth. He will be one of two John O’Shea runners

along with It’s Somewhat who has won his last two starts in the Sellwood Stakes and Ajax Stakes. Hauraki has placed in all three runs this autumn including two at Group 1 level, a third to Winx in the Chipping Norton Stakes and a second in the Ranvet Stakes to The United States. “He’s going as well as we’ve seen him go,” O’Shea said. “I thought he was marginally unlucky last start. Had he stayed on the fence he would have got the run the winner got. “Another good thing about him is that he handles all ground and it looks like it could be on the soft side. “Everything he’s done since he ran at Rosehill has been positive and we’re looking for him to run up to his best.” The United States’ co-owner Nick Williams said the horse had done well since the Ranvet last month. “He is in top form. He is by Galileo so a wet track won’t bother him and we’re really

looking forward to it,” Williams said. David Hayes and Tom Dabernig will have three good prospects running with last year’s winner Criterion, Dibayani and Rising Romance. “Dibayani and Criterion both like the wet and Rising Romance had no luck last start,” Hayes said. “But last year’s winner is hard to go past.” Rising star Happy Clapper could be one to watch here though, backing up from a courageous second placing in the Doncaster. The Pat Webster-trained five year-old managed to beat the handicapper last week, only to be outdone by a champion performance in the finish. However, Webster was so pleased by Happy Clapper’s run and the way he has pulled up that it was no question to persevere with a Queen Elizabeth entry. “His two runs at weight-for-age have been good and he could go to the Queen Elizabeth and not be out of place,” he said.

Waller with stranglehold on Sydney Cup

C

hris Waller looks to have a mortgage on the Group One Sydney Cup with the three clear top picks for the two mile race. Libran, who is shooting for a fourth-straight win, heads the betting but will be closely challenged by stablemates Who Shot Thebarman ($4) and Grand Marshal ($4.20) who quinellaed last year’s Cup with the latter getting up. Libran has been a revelation for the stable this campaign, with the import having only had the one start in Australia back in November prior to his autumn preparation. The five year-old has stepped through the grades impressively and will back-up from a narrow win over Alegria in the Group Two Chairman’s Handicap over 2600m on day one of The Championships. The English import has been carrying big

weights at his last two outings and will drop from 58kg last start to 53kg in the Sydney Cup. Who Shot Thebarman only had 54.5kg on his back in the same race 12 months ago so goes up notably in weights, carrying 57kg this time around. If successful Who Shot Thebarman will join Mourayan (58kg in 2013) as the only other Sydney Cup winner to carry more than 56kg to victory in the race since Tie The Knot (57kg) for his second in 1999. Grand Marshal had just 52kg last year goes up three kilos on Saturday and will be shooting for back-to-back wins for the first time since Tie The Knot (1998-99). Almoonqith for David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and Cafe Society for Gai Waterhouse are considered the top chances outside of the Waller trio, with the two

runners opening at $9. Waterhouse has kept faith with Dee I Cee despite his disappointing performance in the Chairman’s Handicap, finishing 10 lengths sixth behind Libran. She believes the slow tempo early in the race played against Dee I Cee and the plan was always to run him in the Cup. Waterhouse will also saddle up Café Society who set the pace in the Chairman’s Handicap and battled on well to finish third. Meanwhile, trainer Paul Snowden is confident Happy Hannah can continue a family tradition and win Saturday’s Group One Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick. She produced a flying finish at her last start to finish third behind Single Gaze in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill two weeks ago.

seconds as the lead swimmer in the 4x100m freestyle club relay for his club Ravenswood at the NSW titles.

Sure, Magnussen was almost three seconds outside his personal best 100m freestyle time.

It may be an eternity away from his world beating PB 47.10 but Verhaeren reckoned Magnussen was on the right track after witnessing his reaction to finally eclipsing the 49 second mark following months of trying.

But Verhaeren reckoned Magnussen’s expression after finally breaking the 49-second barrier in his 4x100m freestyle relay final effort at last month’s NSW titles showed the dual world champion was on track for Rio. Verhaeren admitted critics would be forgiven for thinking the jury was out on what Magnussen would produce at this week’s Rio Olympic trials starting in Adelaide on Thursday. Upon his return from a shoulder reconstruction Magnussen appears on paper in danger of missing out on an individual Rio Olympic 100m freestyle berth in a field boasting world No.1-ranked Cameron McEvoy and in-form young gun Kyle Chalmers. Magnussen is yet to show if he has recaptured his form since major shoulder surgery robbed him of a chance to have a crack at a record third straight 100m freestyle title at last year’s world titles in Russia. However, Verhaeren admitted he had few concerns after watching Magnussen’s reaction to overcoming the mental hurdle of posting a season best 48.85

“I saw his relief and rightfully so,” Verhaeren said. “It showed that he is back on track. “If you compare where he was three or four months before than he has made a massive improvement.” Australia’s McEvoy – a 2015 world titles silver medallist – is the red hot Rio favourite with a worldleading time of 47.56 seconds. But Verhaeren was confident that London silver medallist Magnussen, who swam almost half a second faster four years ago, is primed to rediscover his best form at the Adelaide trials after his injury woes. “Tracking his whole trajectory to where he is now he would be very happy,” Verhaeren said of Magnussen. “We all know what sort of swimmer he is. “He is on track. “But on track for what?” LAINE CLARK – AAP

IT’s a joke A POLICEMAN RADIOED into headquarters, “Hello. Is that you Sarge?” “Yes? Go ahead,” came the reply. “We have a case here. A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped clean.” “Have you arrested the woman?” “No sir. The floor is still wet.” “SON, YOU’RE ADOPTED” my father told me. “Are you kidding? Really?” I queried, stunned. “Yup, so get ready,” my father said. “They’ll be picking you up in about an hour.”
